Poll: Is Obama now a fiscal conservative? Update: Even the AP scoffs

posted at 4:45 pm on April 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Today’s AOL Hot Seat poll measures the credibility Barack Obama gains with his massive budget cuts of $100 million, or 0.0029% of the total budget. Is he now the next Ronald Reagan, or the next Ronald McDonald? You decide!

Update: The AP channels Greg Mankiw in scoffing at Obama’s effort (via Instapundit):

Cut a latte or two out of your annual budget and you’ve just done as much belt-tightening as President Barack Obama asked of his Cabinet on Monday.

The thrifty measures Obama ordered for federal agencies are the equivalent of asking a family that spends $60,000 in a year to save $6.

Obama made his push for frugality the subject of his first Cabinet meeting, ensuring it would command the capital’s attention. It also set off outbursts of mental math and scribbled calculations as political friend and foe tried to figure out its impact.

The bottom line: Not much.

Third Base Politics says that Obama must have watched the movie Dave recently. At least Dave tried saving $650 million, and without spending more than four trillion dollars first.

Update II: The poll question is mine — I participate in the AOL Hot Seat program. I wanted to see how many HopeyChangeyUnicorny types were still left. Apparently, at 4:51 CT, about 24%. Hilarious!

h/t ace

An analogy to drive home how weak this silly stuff is:

To put those numbers in perspective, imagine that the head of a household with annual spending of $100,000 called everyone in the family together to deal with a $34,000 budget shortfall. How much would he or she announce that spending had be cut? By $3 over the course of the year–approximately the cost of one latte at Starbucks. The other $33,997? We can put that on the family credit card and worry about it next year.

Numbers people.

He’s cutting 100,000,000 from the budget.

We have a budget that is 1,800,000,000,000 in the red.

We’re still 1,799,900,000,000 in the red.

Doesn’t include the 1,000,000,000,000 the Feds printed, largely devaluing the currency.

Only Partially includes the 4,000,000,000,000 we’ve spent ALREADY on this ‘Crisis’.

And doesn’t even begin to talk about the next 8,000,000,000,000 we’ve already committed to spending.

If this is Fiscal responsibility I’m King Kong.

Of course, I’m doubly saddened that the Republicans “reply” by putting up someone to drone on in the most boring voice possible and in the vaguest possible terms about how tax cuts are good and healthcare is important. It’s so frustrating, you know. I read so many good, intelligent discussions of the real issues on sites like these. Is there some way we can fire every Republican Congressman and replace them with bloggers? It would be an improvement, you know. I really believe the intellectual arguments are on our side, but rarely does anyone on the national scene put them forth.

When I heard this morning about Obama declaring to trim the budget with his cabinet, I thought the figure $100 million was a mis-speak or mis-read by the newsreader.

$100 million (at this point in time) is such a drop in the bucket – it’s offensive that he’s getting ink on just making that statement!!!

I sincerely think that life has outraced our government. I suppose that’s the case for everyone on the globe, not just us.

I don’t think this is going to be solved by any single party or personality, people.

I’m emerging after a confusing 2 years to decide that the solutions are in focus. Govt. focus on what it really does well and steers clear of what it doesn’t. Address its own obvious problems.

It SHOULD do intelligence gathering better. There’s an obvious lack of talent here.

It SHOULD provide basic emergency services. We all know that Bush is considered a racist now because that was such a show of ineptitude.

It SHOULD have a tax system that is actually workable. We don’t. Our own cabinet doesn’t meet the tests.

Simple. Keep it simple and do what you do competently.

Obama is not even fiscally responsible in his own life. The media reported how “normal” and “quaint” it was that the Obama’s were only able to pay off their student loans in 2006 after Barack had gotten a load of money from his book deals, but they were not exactly making pennies before that.

Barack worked three jobs before becoming Jr. Senator of Illinois in 2004. From 1992-2004 he taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago, where professors make an average of $148,000/year (which is the regular professor salary. I have no evidence of it, but I’m sure law professors make more). From 1993-2004 he also worked for a civil rights firm, where I’m not sure what salary he made. From 1997-2004 he was a member of the Illinois state senate, where in 2005, the annual salary was $57,600.

His household was pulling in at least $200,000 per year, not counting whatever his salary was from the firm, and not counting whatever Michelle Obama was making (starting in 2002, she was making $116,000/year, which ballooned to $317,000/year in 05). Add in the fact that he was also making money for public speaking appearances, and I don’t find it quaint that he took so long to pay off his loans. I wonder what the hell he was doing with all his money.

One of Hot Air’s liberal trolls writes in brief, robotic, Zen-like aphorisms that are repeated over and over and over again.

Some of us who disagree with this troll, like carbon_footprint, have read these posts so many times, we can repeat them in our sleep. They can be infuriating or hilarious, depending on your mood and the situation, but they are almost always predictable.

And so, there are moments when many non-liberal posters anticipate this troll’s response, go into mind-numbed robot mode, and spew forth one or more of these robotic sayings. It’s a form of sarcastic humor and release. I confess I’ve done it myself, although I have somehow developed more self control recently, but just barely.

I’m trying to take the pledge and never mention or respond to this troll, hoping to starve it of all attention, so that it will either disappear, or at least not be so persistent.
