Obama demands 0.0029% budget cut after running up spending

How can Barack Obama demonstrate his fiscal-responsibility creds after pushing through Porkulus, a pork-filled omnibus spending plan, and a $3.5 trillion budget that far outstrips even the last spending plan from the Democratic-controlled Congress?   Demand a big reduction in spending through budget cuts at federal agencies.  Obama has done just that — with cuts that amount to a whopping 0.0029% of the budget Obama just pushed Congress to provide him:

President Obama plans to convene his Cabinet for the first time today, where he will order members to identify a combined $100 million in budget cuts over the next 90 days, according to a senior administration official.

The budget cuts, while they would account to a minuscule portion of federal spending, are intended to signal the president’s determination to cut spending and reform government, the official said.

Obama’s order comes as he is under increasing pressure to show momentum toward his goal of eventually reducing the federal deficit, even as he goes about increasing spending in the short run to prop up the economy and support his priorities.

Earlier this month, both chambers of Congress passed Obama’s $3.5 trillion budget outline for 2010, which includes unprecedented new investments in health care, education and energy. But the huge budget, which contemplates a $1.2 trillion deficit, has drawn the ire of small-government conservatives who say that the deficits jeopardize the nation’s economic future.

Obama apparently wants to answer the Tea Parties by showing that he’s capable of limiting the growth of government, but $100 million barely registers in Washington these days — and certainly does nothing to slow down the Obama spending juggernaut.  Compare this pittance to some of the other numbers that Obama has produced:

  • $100 million from a $3.5 trillion budget for FY2010: 0.0029%
  • $100 million from the $1.2 trillion White House deficit projection for their FY2010 budget: 0.008%
  • $100 million from the $700 billion Porkulus stimulus bill Obama demanded: 0.013%
  • $100 million from the $634 billion “down payment” on nationalized health care: 0.016%
  • $100 million from the $555 billion omnibus spending plan completing the 2009 budget: 0.018%
  • $100 million from the $13 billion in pork from the omnibus spending plan: 0.77%

The cuts that Obama proposes don’t even amount to 1% of the pork Obama signed into law last month in the omnibus spending bill.  It’s the equivalent of having Mr. Creosote from Monty Python’s Meaning of Life ask for a Diet Coke instead of the wafer-thin mint at the end of his meal (definitely Not Safe for Work):

This is an insult to the intelligence of fiscal conservatives.  If Obama wanted to demonstrate some fiscal responsibility, he could enforce the George Bush executive order instructing federal agencies to ignore pork line items in their budgets.  Better yet, he could have honored his campaign promise by vetoing the pork-filled omnibus spending bill, let alone refrained from leaping into the discredited statist spending policies that have been the hallmark of his administration thus far.

Update: Greg Mankiw has an even better perspective on the ludicrous nature of this effort, via AllahPundit’s Twitter feed.  Pass me the soy-milk latté and I’ll forget about the Cadillac-sized budget hole …

Update II: Francis Cianfrocca (via Ben Domenech) answers the really pressing question: How much is this in A-Rods?

I hate the media.

Funny you should say that. He’s cutting the money from other areas so he doesn’t have to cut $100M from his Palestinian comrades’ terrorism slush fund. This is an important time in the two-front war peace process, and he’s not going to let it go to waste by undercutting the freedom fighters.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 20, 2009 at 10:21 AM

Maybe, just maybe, our President did actually “know” about the tea parties, and this is his typically weak response to them. As in, “Hey, teabaggers, see, I’m cutting spending, just like you claim to have wanted…” and will allow the MFM narrative of how ‘in touch’ and ‘responsive’ this administration is to the whole nation, indeed, whole world…

Kid from Brooklyn on April 20, 2009 at 10:23 AM

If you need to put it in terms the average family making $35,000 can understand, it’s the equivalent of asking for $1 less to be spent.

Even that overstates things; it’s a change in the rate of growth, not a bottom-line decrease.

steveegg on April 20, 2009 at 10:23 AM

So he will look to save what would be a single earmark, these days… such fiscal acumen!

“All right, now the sun sets in the East, right?”

“No! The sun sets in the West.”

“That’s if your *in* the East, but we are way out West now, so we are past where the sun sets…”

Typical East Coast Liberal logic.

We are in debt. So, getting out of debt means we have to get in more debt? Really big debt. Really really big debt.

And to make sure we get out of debt, we don’t spend 0.0029% of what we planned on spending?

Guess we are already past where the sun sets…

Change we can believe in. Everywhere I go in my city…parks, in front of ‘grocery stores’ and ‘quick marts’, heck…just walking down the street, there are “people of color” panhandling for money or asking for a cigarette. Hussein could have spent that 900 million taking care of his ‘own’? At our local “Tea Party” on the 15th….there were NO “people of color” protesting….but more than a few ‘begging’.

JoeySlippers on April 20, 2009 at 10:33 AM

Boy if the Prime Minister and Queen of England thought the gifts were cheap before…..

You know $99 million of this $100 million will probably come from defense and I am willing to bet it targets southern states and those that did not catch Obama fever last year. That is the way Chicago politics is played and he only knows one way to deal with domestic threats.

He hasn’t a clue how to deal with foreign threats.

Better yet, he could have honored his campaign promise by vetoing the pork-filled omnibus spending bill,

No kidding. It was Obama’s baby, regardless of the name tacked on as “sponsor”. The only way for Obama to have the right to co-opt big tax bucks necessary to convert our constitutional government into a socialist state was to shoo Pelosi’s juggernaut through Congress. He had no political objections to the juggernaut.

The federal government has long precedence requiring regulations and stipulations upon local governments without providing any financial measures to execute the federal requirements.

Obama disregards rule of law and holds in contempt any legality regarding contractual law. He “writes” covertly without a written word. Given any fissure, Obama blasts through safeguards as non-existent, not to waste any opportunity to exploit catastrophies. The spending is “constitutionally” legislated (he will disregard FOR WHAT it was specifically legislated) via a vote that disregarded public voice and written outcry from constituent citizens. Through the logistics of legal wrangling via the new top-heavy federal bureaucracy bequeathed by GWB, Obama will designate what gets done and establish his own socialist precedence to dissolve the Constitutional integrity distinguishing between branches of government. Obama will interpret whatever legislation passes as Obama will; the Constitution be damned by him.

Diplomatic envoys be damned. Obama will be his own agent. No one can speak for the President’s teleprompter but The One, who evidently can not effectively communicate by private telephone conversation, teleconference or by ambassador or by Secretary of State.

Unbelievable, for the first time, Obama convened his Cabinet today.

You’d think they all were sitting around with their thumbs up their rears waiting for orders. Except the flow of federally sponsored FBI and NSA reports from espionage intelligence gathering (breaking our Bill of Rights) surmises public backlash to Obama’s socialist measures. DUH. Public outcry is unsuitable to report and identify as meaningful substance; deny that Tea Parties occur (oops) or that peaceful protest has any credibility. For Obama’s presidency, the information MUST come from illegal intelligence gathering methods that destroy our nation’s Constitutional essence.

Meanwhile, globe trotting and partying, the costs mount as the POTUS is bored in the White House. Obama’s extravagance knows no bounds. He must have his foreign language tutorials from heads of state, nothing less, leaving us ashamed at what sticks and what gets sloughed by Obama’s audacity.

Lessee….

$100,000,000 is to
$3,500,000,000,000 as

$10,000,000 is to
$350,000,000,000 as

$1,000,000 is to
$35,000,000,000 as

$100,000 is to
$3,500,000,000 as

$10,000 is to
$350,000,000 as

$1,000 is to
$35,000,000 as

$100 is to
$3,500,000 as

$10 is to
$350,000 as

$1 is to

So if my family has an annual budget of $70,000, this is like cutting out one gallon of milk a year.
