Napolitano: Returning vets too stupid to avoid extremists
posted at 9:26 am on April 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Janet Napolitano continues to thrash around for any rationalization she can find for the DHS report that painted political organizing on abortion, federalism, and immigration as potential national-security threats and called returining military vets a danger to the country they served. Yesterday on CNN, Napolitano tried explaining that the DHS doesn’t see these vets as threats. The DHS sees them as saps who don’t know any better than to fall into extremist traps:
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Sunday portrayed veterans as victims – not perpetrators – of right-wing extremism as she sought to combat the political controversy arising out of an April 14 Homeland Security memo warning that returning soldiers could be ripe for domestic terrorism participation.
“The report is not saying that veterans are extremists. Far from it,” Napolitano said on CNN’s State of the Union. “What it is saying is returning veterans are targets of right-wing extremist groups that are trying to recruit those to commit violent acts within the country. We want to do all we can to prevent that.”
Yes, the poor dears are victims that obviously can’t decide themselves not to join violent groups … none of which the report bothers to name, by the way. Unlike the report on left-wing extremism, which names several known groups with track records of violence, the DHS report that Napolitano continues to defend never bothers to name an actual threat. Instead, it repeatedly states that DHS has no data on actual threats:
The DHS/Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) has no specific information that domestic rightwing* terrorists are currently planning acts of violence, but rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues.
And how does the DHS identify “domestic rightwing* terrorists”?
Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.
So the Federalist Society has gone from being a group that follows the Constitutional tradition to being a potentially dangerous extremist group! And what did the report actually say about veterans? Page 2, the first mention of veterans in the report, makes veterans sound more like perps than victims:
The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.
That doesn’t say that terrorist groups will exploit senseless veterans and trick them into becoming violent terrorists. It presumes that veterans have a predisposition to become violent extremists because of the difficulties that they have “reintegrating into their communities.” It’s the latest corollary to the every-Vietnam-vet-is-a-powderkeg belief. It’s not until two pages later that the report mentions the issue of recruitment and radicalization. And on page 8, we get this rather large section header:
(U) Disgruntled Military Veterans
Napolitano is not only condescending towards veterans in her latest rationalization, she’s being completely dishonest about the way the DHS assessment treats returning combat vets. The report identifies them as a potential national-security threat to the country which they defended on the front lines.
DHS needs to stick to watching the groups themselves, and not people exercising their First Amendment rights and returning military veterans. In fact, the first thing Napolitano should do is to actually get threat data, instead of making up a bunch of scare stories about political dissent while not bothering to identify actual known racist and white-supremacist groups with track records of violence who should be watched.

Ed,
Nowhere in Napolitano’s statements does she say that vets are “stupid” or “dupes” or “saps”. You wrote those words. Isn’t that at the very least, stretching the truth, or at worst, an outright fabrication on your part? This issue is contentious enough without throwing more gasoline on the fire by putting words in Napolitano’s mouth.

hawkman,
It’s not to our left-ward government that loath our military and do not see them as our protecters of freedom and liberty. They see these “professional killers” as potential threats to our society.
Nice “frame-job” Tom, and quite disingenuous. Did you purposely forget the “?” after the bold???? By presuming that only military vets are targets for hate groups, can we also say that domestic environmental terrorist now also include all vegetarians, tree-huggers, and those who recycle their beverage containers? Certainly not! Could it also be possible that military vets are sought out by businesses that are searching for folks that are reliable, disciplined, and love their country enough to die for it?
The specifics of this report are biasly grouping one sector, (our vets), without supplying facts or examples that back up such implications other than isolated events. Seems to be SOP for the left to attack a sector of our nation that tends to be conservative by nature.

Napolitano is definitely a fool and it is hard to understand how she was elected as Governor of Arizona and that someone actually appointed her to a Cabinet position. However the headline is trash and only brings shame to whoever wrote it. Think what you want about implying something but that does not compare to absolute falsehood. HotAir loses an enormous chunk of credibility and respect when false headline as misleading as this one appears on the site. Want to be a rightwing dingbat then continue to post outrageous statements like the headline. What the were you thinking that your readers too stupid to know the difference? Huge explanation is in order!

No, I did not forget a question mark. He is OK with the FBI saying that based on this post:
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/04/17/dhs-ignored-civil-liberties-lawyers-warnings-on-report/
And the FBI and DHS are concerned about groups that pose a danger of violence, that’s why you don’t see them talking about legitimate businesses recruiting military members.
The FBI’s report and the DHS reports are about hate groups. And both find (and I’m guessing the DHS report relies heavily on the FBI report) that right-wing hate groups are targeting military vets because of their combat and weapons training.
No one is saying vets are extremists. Or that they’re dumb. They are saying they are attractive targets of these groups.

Being a Vietnam vet, I confess to a certain sensitivity about vets being smeared. After reading as much of this report as I could stand, it seems to be more of a political document, badly written, and definitely not deserving of publication status.
Having said that, you betcha that shit riles me.Veterans went through enough demonization during the Vietnam War’s aftermath, and this has the appearance of laying the groundwork for another round.
Call me paranoid, but it well could be part of an overall strategy to paint the entire right with the same brush. I’d be pleased to see that debunked over time, but given the behavior of the admin,it’s a compelling thought.

Napolitano’s depiction of vets as victim fits in well with the liberal mindset, though. They can’t understand why anyone would fight for an evil country like ours, and assume that only the desperate and stupid would end up getting tricked into serving in the military.
To be fair, in there party, they do have a couple brilliant examples to support their theory: John Kerry and Jack Murtha.

This “report” makes a lot of broad generalizations. Where are the facts? I could sit here and write a report about what the students at this college town I live in may or may not be capable of, that doesn’t mean anything I theorize will turn out to be true. Quite the contrary. They’re having a protest this week, wearing empty holsters to class to demonstrate their support of the right to carry concealed weapons on campus. Does that make them capable of carrying out a Columbine attack? Of course not.
There are extremists in both parties who are capable of pulling off acts of violence, there’s no doubt about that. It’s certainly not a characteristic the majority of veterans possess, and the statement about them being vulnerable and targeted by these no name groups is, well, poppycock. They’re no more susceptible to fall into that situation than I am, and labeling them so it not only stupid, but irresponsible.

Actualy, all things considered…
/puts on flack jacket…
As Vets swore to defend the Constitution of the US… and there IS NO time limit contained in that oath…
Whereas this Administration is destroying the very fabric of the Constitution on a daily basis… by taking powers unto the Congress, and the Administration not given to them by the Constitution…
Whereas we could very well have an Unconstituional President, one who by the very fact of being a Dual citizen at birth does not meet the “Natural Born Citizen Clause” of the Constitution… but courts will not, for some reason, rule on the MERITS of the case….
Whereas the Department of Homelans Security has, in this doucment, said that anyone who like the OLD Pre Barry Constitution with limited Fed Powers….
Vets, by their very OATHS, by defending the Consitution, could be a threat to this administration.
Romeo13 on April 20, 2009 at 11:02 AM
Napolitano is a drone. A product of years of brain washing, on how to hate those who disagree with her ideology, and hatred for her country.
To lable anyone in this country, a terrorist , with nothing to back it up, and go soft on those who truly mean us harm….is completely stupid. She is way out of her league on this job.
One has to wonder if this insult to Vets is a blunder, or a deliberate stunt, to demean them.

It is a meme of the Left that white men join the military either because they are stoopid enough to be ready to die for their country or they like blowing up civilians and killing brown people (meanwhile, minorities and women join because it’s their only way out of poverty).
In that light, this report makes perfect sense.

I don’t think the wording is questionable. And I’ll give you a very simple example as to why I must explain it:
People like Ed are blatently twisting the words of the report and Napolitano. And in this case, not even twisting, just putting words into her mouth.
When people act in a dishonest way, it needs to be called out.

Someone last week on Hannity I believe, made the statement that he and several of his friends were going to “turn themselves in” so that DHS and local law enforcement wouldn’t have to work so hard to track them. I think that this is a great idea!
I am an Iraqi Freedom veteran, and am returning within 2 months for a second tour, and am a Police Detective. Moreover, I believe in state’s rights and I am a Christian! I think that clearly I am who this memo was written about. I will be making arrangements with my Chief today about turning myself in. I think that if all of the veterans and all of the conservatives would show up at their nearest DHS office to surrender themselves, we could make this much easier on our government!

They may be attractive targets, but they are a moving target 10 miles off in the distance. You should remember that extremist groups will welcome anyone into their clan who has a deep-seeded hatred for the government. These fine young men obviously do not hate their government, since they volunteered to serve their country.
How do you square the two?
Timothy McVeigh is not a barometer for judging the conduct or potential danger of a soldier transitioning back to a civilian. The guy was a nutcase. Period. There have been millions of soldiers who have easily and successfully made the transition, but only a handful of bad eggs.

The only thing our current government fears more than its electorate/people is a military that has sworn allegience first and foremost to the Constitution and the rights guarenteed by this document. Historically, when any government oversteps these boundrys or becomes oppressive to its people, a military will side with the people. Our current crop of paranoid “leadership”, (including Napolitano) is attempting deliberately intimidate this allegience by spreading these ridiculous and unsupported accusations by using some of the same fear tactics this administration has used to pass their agenda of bigger government/control. Demonizing our military is just one aspect of the power struggle between our government and its people on who we should trust. Make your own decision on who’s looking out for your best interest. I’ll put my faith and trust in our Veterans.

Could it be that extremist left wingers like Napolitano, Peelousy, Reid, Obama, and their ilk, are the primary cause of the alleged difficulty of veterans reintegrating in the community? And if that’s the case, what should the Government be doing to combat those leftwingers causing such difficulties, in order to mitigate the possibility (infinitesimal as it might be) of such alleged veteran (singular intended because this is a bogus ‘problem’) joining an extremist right wing group?
Maybe supporting the veterans and their missions and pressing their leftwing followers to do the same?

He also said the pennsylvania police shooter was a “vet.” A$$clown! The Penn. Shooter was dishonorably discharged after less than 30 days in the Marines. I think all service members would take offense at elevating him to “vet status.”

Then AG are just as apt for terrorism, and animal right groups, actually most liberal activists on campuses are more apt to commit acts of violence, many “fringe” groups of liberal causes such a LaRaza, Black Panthers, and others are much more likely to commit, and have committed vandalism and terrorism.
They first need to look at who is creating the choas, who is stopping the first amendment, who is stopping the second, those are the ones that are on the brink of causing havoc. And those are the ones that have already started their campaign of terror…and they don’t target the “military”, they target… who (whom)? The University students…they are the ones that need to be watched.
I would argue, and place any bets, that college students cause more disruptions, more damage, more instances of hate then any group of military men or women. They are more prone for violence, the the trained men and women of the armed services.

Hell no, her thought process is impeccable and she is infallible as are all “good” leftists. She’s seen how a story can be fabricated and the whole cloth sold whole sale on the public market. Janet believes in herself as a true handmaiden of our Potus. Sheesh, Obama has never been known to unload an ally under the wheels of politically expedient buses on route.
But today, the first time ever that Obama convenes his Cabinet, Napolitano remains. And Janet WILL remain for Obama’s duration. The MSM will experience the wrath of Obama’s cold shoulder war and capitulate in silence, sweeping any news under The One rug.

Rick Santelli and Cramer were the ones to do that on CNBC and they’re currently being silenced.

Napolitano:
Napolitano’s statement is a good thing. It only serves to bolster the case against the administrations policy. It is a clueless administration.
The teas parties happened for a reason.
AnthonyK on April 20, 2009 at 12:10 PM
Napolitano’s response indicates that she either didn’t read the report, or she is an unabashed liar. One cannot be a “victim” of extremist right-wing recruitment efforts, and a “lone-wolf.” The two are mutually exclusive.

Carbonfootprint, you probably escaped banning if you didn’t disagree with CJ on creationism or how he is running the place. Do either of those two and you are pretty well assured a “this account has been blocked” message.

Your link was for the wrong month. They were confirmed in January http://democrats.senate.gov/calendar/2009-01.html So the Democrats agreed to unanimous consent but the Republicans didn’t? It is on the Democrat calendar!!!
But somehow in the Congressional Record, they neglected to mention the unanimous consent item. Interesting.
Unanimous Consent – The ultimate lack of accountability or courage.
Dasher on April 20, 2009 at 12:12 PM
Dasher, noticed that after I posted. But at the bottom of the page you can click on the month you wish to see. Heard tell, no link, that Mitch McConnell was instrumental in allowing the voice vote instead of the normal attach one’s name to the vote.

For years we’ve heard that Islamist terrorism is caused by US government policy, and if only the US government would change, the terrorism would end. If the US were not to change, then terrorism would be our own fault, and the terrorists themselves would be blameless.
So, why isn’t the same rationale applied to supposed “right-wing” terrorists? Shouldn’t they be called “freedom fighters?”

And Charles has been opening registration almost everyday lately. He must be getting desperate.

One of these days I may go over to Little Green Manballs to see what the hoopla is all about re this Charles character……nah, on second thought, maybe I won’t.

They won’t live with shit. They are more than happy to report whatever makes the vets look bad. I recently had an argument with an idiot (my parents, who were in their early thirties during tet) who though Cronkite was a god. I mentioned that Tet was an abysmal failure, but Cronkite would have none of that. To me Cronkite should have been tried for treason. Of course, my dad also was pissed during the 68 Chicago riots when he said that the cops ran amok. He really got mad at me since I was a veteran cop and thought that the cops didn’t do ENOUGH beating. We still get along, but I have always enjoyed showing them for the Liberal idiots they are.

John Kerry slipped and gave us the perfect proof of how the libtards view us. You all remember the statement. They constantly make faux pas (thats french) that show EXACTLY how they view us.
I’m a Viet Vet too and the crap I went through when I came home is “seared in my head” (lol couldnt resist that)
Napalitano is giving the moonbats cover for repeating that on the current generation of soldiers including younger members of my family.
She needs to be FIRED.

Beck is not to be blamed for stirring outrage by drawing comparisons between recent actions -the cultish behavior of 0bamatrons, the socialist takeover of the banking and auto industries, the fascist report from DHS- and the regimes of Hitler and Stalin.
The facts are observable. A rational human not clouded by political prejudice will see similarites in what’s happening today with what has happened in the past.
So in fact, the one’s stirring outrage are the government and the citizens that placed it in power who are engaging in outrageous behavior, similar to that of past regimes like Hitler and Stalin. They are to blame, not Glenn Beck for simply seeing what is in front of his face and calling it like it is.

One must be Politically Incorrect in order to be politically accurate.
McVeigh had a screw loose, and the covert feds knew it and targeted him for their button to push over the edge in order to prove their power mongering point and strike fear in the hearts and minds of the public.
McVeigh’s crime against our nation was the murder of citizens employed by the Federal government. McVeigh was absolutely guilty of his crime.
Those citizen federal government employees, by the way, were not deemed as valuable by the federal government as were the citizens employed within the World Trade Center whose families already privately insured with handsome settlements yet were granted GWB payment subsidies from tax funds never provided the Oklahoma victims.
But money and valued life aside, the perpetuation by the Feds to apply the McVeigh portrait improperly today upon any political opponent of socialism in order to smear the opponent also negates McVeigh’s protest.
McVeigh protested the murder by incineration of Americans at Mt. Carmel, TX. The murder of Branch Davidians was conducted by feds who lost patience and grabbed their guns and tanks and explosives initiating the attack and fire. The nine survivors gave that witness under oath.
McVeigh played the tool in the Feds hands, where his memory continues to provide a tool in the Feds hands, NOT to protect the US Constitution and Bill of Rights, but to negate those very documents via the Federal McVeigh paint brush that strokes too broadly, the very point McVeigh made in his most hypocritically grotesque protest.
McVeigh, the criminal exploiter of vigilante vengeance, deserves the ruin of his name and memory and whatever irony applies.
But fools dismiss the history and are blind to the results at play today, not at McVeigh’s expense but at his cause’s expense.
McVeigh never released a statement. He realized what a fool and murderer he’d allowed himself to become. He also realized that whatever he said would not simply be used against him in a court of law, but would be used to dismiss the relevance of lives taken by Clinton’s Feds under Reno. Instead of helping the victims from Mt. Carmel, TX, McVeigh realized that he’d erased their shred of legitimacy remaining after the MSM rewrote the history of that day.
Napolitano sends a cold shiver down any American’s back. We are all her target, and she has an itchy trigger finger and isn’t shy about her grip. Where Reno left off, Napolitano will progress against Civil Rights exponentially.

Here is an off the wall thought. or maybe not. the DHS warning is leaked. gitmo terrorists are let go on our streets.
So sort of attack happens. Ex military or right wing terrorists to blame, marital law declared. round up for fema camps. full lefty commy rule.. Just a weird thought.
