Good news from Axelrod: Anti-Americanism “isn’t cool anymore”
posted at 6:43 pm on April 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
Never has the essential fatuity of The One’s foreign-policy vision been expressed so succinctly. This really is the core of their strategy to get people back on America’s team. Obama’s “coolness.”
“What’s happened is anti-Americanism isn’t cool anymore,” Mr. Axelrod said, speaking to an audience of a few hundred at a conference in Washington sponsored by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism.
“This president has not only engaged the leaders of the world, he’s engaged the people of the world,” Mr. Axelrod said, arguing that Mr. Obama’s approach to foreign policy has restored “a sense of humility” that “was missing” in the past.
It won’t get us combat troops from Europe for Afghanistan, and it won’t stop Iran’s nuclear processing, and it won’t change Zawahiri’s jihadi boilerplate even a little bit, but other than that it’s a whole new world. Interesting admission by Axe hidden in this formulation, incidentally — that the anti-Americanism of the Bush years was, to some greater or lesser extent, a pose, based not just on policy disagreement but on being thought fashionable or bien pensant. If Bush-hatred was that superficial, how superficial is Obama-worship?
Semi-related, here’s Spanish-language video of The One appearing to scold his new pal, presumably for not finding him sufficiently cool as to prevent that cheap stunt with the book on Saturday.

If O is indeed “showing a pair” in that video, I would certainly be a tad less humiliated as an American. Maybe he doesn’t need to go around pointing fingers in every dictator’s chest in front of a room full of cameras, but if he was as ticked off as this video presumes him to be, he could’ve have shown a little more backbone in public. Of course, he could just be suffering from a damaged ego. Hard to know with this guy.

Dude, I was 100% with you in the elections when you often stated how intelligent Obama is.. But when I listen to him now, and watch the policies rolling out of the usa day after day, and I watch him behave like a royal buffoon on the international stage – I’m not so sure anymore. He seems like a real dumba** so far. Guy reminds me of Alfred E Neuman more & more.

KKK rallies? Is that what you thought last week was all about? Funny, I didn’t see any white sheets or cross burning. In fact the only member of of the KKK is a Democrat Senator from West Virginia.

Whatever Obama told Chavez, Chavez shrugged it off.
On the title, how could a cold-hearted person be anything but cool? Just keep on the look out. What Obama giveth with one hand, he taketh away with the other in spades. Whatever the “Anti-American” definition is at any given moment, don’t blink or you’ll miss its revision.
Axelrod turns on a dime. You could bank on Axelrod personifying a boogie man if you had any money and your bank weren’t shut down.
Don’t bother translating “Anti-American” since only Obama has the PC cult’s permission to promote it, though under the newly stoked guise of a “cool” analytical approach.

So when their guy is POTUS dissent is NOT COOL but when a repub is POTUS dissent is VERY COOL I get it!
It’s not their hypocrisy that amazes me, it’s the fact they think no one will notice their obvious hypocrisy…what f-ing morons!

Allah-
Axelrod’s right, unless I’m missing some context here.
It sounds like he was saying that it wasn’t an easy, popular pose to take in Europe and the rest of the world to be reflexively anti-American, and then when the United States asks for help you say, “I’d love to help but I myself have an election to win, and you’re just not popular over here, so you see…sorry.”
Anyway, that argument is gone. I have no idea what it will mean in terms of policy – it might be totally meaningless. But you can’t just say, “Well if we’re too pro-American,we’ll lose, so sorry about your foreign policy goals.”
This was, in a tangential sense, one of the reasons why I voted for Obama. Not that the extremists care – they don’t. But it’s awfully difficult for a Zawahiri to recruit new members to fight “the Great Satan” when the Great Satan is Obama as opposed to Bush.
Proud Rino on April 20, 2009 at 6:59 PM

I am sure that some foreigners like Obama, because they think he is more like them. Bush was too American for them. However, that does not mean they like Americans and when and if the day comes that Obama stops kissing their collective a**es I wonder if they will like him.
BTW, Africans always liked Bush, he had a very high approval rating there. Not all the world hated the US then, nor does all the world hate us now.
But the people who are rabidly anti American are not going to change their minds because of Obama.

Supplanting ridicule for “hatred” suffices, allowing that motivation AND manner of delivery affect the tone. Given that the Bush-ridicule was so superficial, it is that much worse for Obama because the ridicule at Obama’s expense is absolutely internationally genuine. NO ONE called Bush a pantywaist president; everyone in Europe snickers that Obama is.
In Latin America, Obama has taken the measure without a microphone to establish the sense that he can converse without a teleprompter. Good for him.

uh huh this here is more evidence of the lack of knowledge regarding history. The KKK is an extreme left wing of the Democrat Party. It always has been and its foundation is in the Democrat party. In fact the FBI when from its early days of monitoring it had it pegged for what it was when it was founded and extension of the radicals in the Democrat Party.
Racism is a leftist ideal much like all things that are evil in this world to include fascism (National socialism key word being socialism), Socialism, Communism, Statism etc and so on.
Lefties need to project their evil onto their enemies in order to feel good about themselves but in the end it does not change the fact that evil continues to exist in the world due to leftist ideology and leftist apathy to do the right thing.

I always find it interesting that we’re told how “Everyone hates Americans”, but whenever I happen to be at any tourist attraction, Nat’l park, oceon, etc., all I see are people from other countries anxious to experience what we are and have. Not to mention the millions who have decided we have so much going for us that they chose to live here illegally. Maybe Obama is wrong…maybe we aren’t so bad.
anniekc on April 20, 2009 at 7:16 PM
Well played, AP.
I would add only that anti-Americanism has never been cool, except with Euro-statists, totalitarians, tyrants and the New Left. This might be lost on Axelrod, as guru to the POTUS who marinated for a lifetime in the views of people like Frank Marshall Davis, Bill Ayers and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright
The Obama Doctrine seems to have been formulated by his wife: There has not been much to be proud of America for in the period Before Obama… but now The One is here, and the world needs to get on board. Good luck with that.

First off, I can’t tell you how offended I am, by that statement. I’m sure this wasn’t in your thought processes when the office was being trashed daily by the left, when Mr. Bush was the President.
Secondly….were you this protective of the office, when the left, was so harsh, and trashing Palin, and her children on a daily basis? A trashing that still continues today? Were you this worried about the respect for the office, while Obama essentially trashes the constitution? Are you this protective of the office, while this President, is schmoozing with dictators, and tyrants?
Seems funny. I’ve seen vitriol from both parties, but this election, was by far the worst, and the trophy definitely goes to the liberal left darlin.

Heh. I’m sure Axelrod meant Zawahiri and Ahmadinejad. He could not have meant “Europe, Turkey and Latin America” seeing as how this is where Obama went. Wait. This is exactly what he meant. To which your response is:
Nevermind the grandiose achievement of his predecessor who spent 8 years to build a “OMFG, you forgot Poland!!1″ coalition. Obama couldn’t even get us European troops in the middle of a global recession after his first major trip overseas. A failure, indeed.
This change of hear isn’t entire superficial. Obama isn’t tied to any foreign policy decisions by Bush, which last time I checked, is what the GOP was running on in 2008. So we have a guy who comes across as nice, and who was against all the stuff that many Europeans were against.
How he proceeds from here is indeed a big question. And it is indeed true that while the previous moron did more than his fair share to screw things up, many problems in the world including those mentioned by AP exist regardless of Bush: Iran, North Korea, Venezuela. Still this kind of whining would be laughed out of this site if a Republican were in office.
Give him more time. And I don’t mean sit silently. We can argue about the measures he’s taking, but expecting any result at this point is silly.
Also, beware what you wish for. If he manages to stop the Iranian nuclear program, the GOP is out of power for millenia.

this is where you and the other idiots are wrong. The president has to earn respect from the Americian people. He is not a king, nor is he a “special person”. He is simply a human being who was able to raise alot of money and say what he needed to to win an election. The office is what deserves respect not the man/woman in the office. And that respect for that office has been earned over 230 years by man making the tough decsions and placing the country first.
Obama has not earned a large majority of the countries respect. In fact he is losing respect on a daily basis by putting himself above the country. when he goes abroad he is no longer Obama he is the personification of america its past, present and future. his words say he is apart from the country. I never saw the Europeans treat Bush like a movie star and then dis him.
No, Bush was not the one who called people who disagreed with him unpatriotic.
But I have heard people in the Obama administration say something very much like that about Tea Party protestors, veterans, and Republicans.

no that post deserves more of a response. first of all Obama is tied to alot of the policies that Bush was. it’s called allainces, treaties, friendships. These things like eastern europe’s (poland) friendship were decades in the making. It cost american lives and treasure to secure that friendship. America lived under the threat of MAD for decades to secure the release and freedom of eastern Europe. We activily engaged the Soviets economically, politically and in proxy wars for generations to secure that friendship. Obama is not king. He has certain responsibilites as President one being to understand the goals of the country for the last oh i don’t know 230 years to bring freedom into the world. Not to pissoff our friends and embrace the enemies of that freedom. If Obama wants to dissovle our treaties and alliances there is ways to do that.
As far as Iran what is going to make them stop now? Obama going to ask them pretty please with sugar on top? the Jews will bomb them and then Obama will have to choose between the Jewish homeland or Muslims. I already know who he wants to support. Will the country let him. will we forget our history and allow another 6 million jews to die so that the rest of the middle east “will like us”?
And what of the millions south of our border who dream of freedom? What did Obama’s embrace of Chevez and ortaga and Castro do to them? Do you thing the freedom loving people will still love us? with every move Obama is making as many enemies as he is friends…and if he moves totally away from Americian’s forgein policy of the last 70 years will our allies stick with us. will they be able to trust the word of the americian’s again. Of will they understand that our policies and views will and can change from one day to the next? Who will invest in us as a military allie if they can not count on us being there when we the next president comes into office.
Idiots like you have no understanding of world affairs. you use feelings to dictate your world view instead of reasoning and logic. If it feels good it must be good right?

I don’t know, the Somalian pirates have no problem hating Obama and recruiting new pirates. The Pakistanis are not feeling all warm and cuddly toward him, what with the drones still dropping bombs. So I guess that the whole thing of getting rid of Bush did not take care of hating Americans when it comes to Zawhiri and his friends.
Democrats forget that Osama declared war on the United States when Bill Clinton was president.

So, do we now have confirmation that it was “cool” when O was hangin’ with Ayers, Wright, et al?!

That is true. After all if Obama runs out on the eastern Europeans that is just like putting them out on a limb and sawing it off. Why would anyone else want to be in that position?

Part time patriots- only when your party is in charge.
Hypocrites.

WRONG!!!! I’ll always be a Patriot, no matter who’s in charge. I will always defend my country, from enemies abroad, or within.
Find another argument.

The junta occupying the White House is as anti-American as they come.
As to the rest of the world. Screw them.

I guess cons not read this post:
New video shows less friendly encounter between Obama and Chavez.
Thanks AP.

Well, I know that more than anything else I want my president to be doing what all the “cool” kids are doing. So if anti-Americanism is out, I want my Prez to be out front of the newest trend.
That’s how we judge a great leader — by how well they don the trappings of the current fads.
Cripes, the stupidity of this Administration is astonishing.

They also forget that iran declared war on us when carter was president and are still at war with us in deed as well as word. And Obama is going to allow our avowed enemy, the one that says it will destroy us get the bomb. Insanity does not begin to describe this policy.

Unfortunately for Axelrod, Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright didnt get the memo about anti Americanism… scratch that, they are “patriotic” dissenters right ? Yeah, that’s right.
“not cool” are two very revealing words to have been used by Axelrod. Is any one even surprised that he would say something like this? Not me.

that’s the problem with the left that think you love the country because of who is in charge. Most conservatives love the country because of the consitution not who is in charge on any given year. Our military and politicians take an oath to defend the consitution not the Presidenacy, or the Congress but the piece of paper that is our founding. If those in charge decide to rule in a way that is outside of that consituion than not only our military but our population is duty bound to resist that effort. that is what being a patriot is. For ideas and ideals not for a person. The majority of people in the armed services did not sign up because they wanted to fight for GW Bush. They signed up to protect this country, to expanded our ideas to other people that have never known freedom. Americians do not fight for any man nor for any party. We fight for our ideas.

Not that your argument has any legs anyway, but according to the Obama lexicon we are not at war, so what are you talking about?

According the DHS secretary, we are not at war. We are at “man made disasters”. So there.
