Obama on Chavez’s book: “I think it was a nice gesture”

posted at 7:37 pm on April 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

No, it wasn’t a “nice gesture,” as The One very well knows. It was a cheap stunt designed to put him on the spot so that Chavez can crow when he gets home about having confronted los Yanquis with evidence of their imperialist crimes. Obama can’t call him out, though, lest our precious nascent “dialogue” with Venezuela be jeopardized, so he’s forced to swallow hard and play the stooge. Good work, Barry. Note too the vague, politic rhetoric to describe Chavez’s long history of evil clownishness. If you’re not sure what he means by “interference” that’s a “source of concern,” let me spell it out: He’s talking about funding Marxist terrorists who’ve held Americans hostage for years on end. Mentioning that might spoil the dialogue, too.

As for his point that talking to Venezuela doesn’t hurt American strategic interests, that might be true or it might not — John Ensign, for one, seems to disagree, and we’ll have to see how the detente plays in South America — but Bush holding hands with the Wahhabi king wasn’t exactly a clear and present danger to the U.S. either and that fact didn’t seem to console the left (or right). It’s not a question of jeopardizing national security, it’s a question of conferring legitimacy upon a cretin who, in a just world, would be radioactively illegitimate. If Obama’s going to do that, the least he can do is not play dumb about it.

Blowback

Allow me to give you the answer, as I see it.

The GOP is so divided it couldn’t win a pissing contest right now with a bunch of kindergartners in a sandbox on the play ground, hell they would steal your lunch money. All you have to do is read the comments here and on other blogs. One group wants this, another group wants that, and then still some other group wants something else and everyone is calling everyone else names and talking sh*t about them instead of working together. Hell, I could run against the GOP and win with Marlboro in one hand and a Bud in the other.

It’s time to work together and put this silly, I don’t like you so I’m going to take my toys and not play, sh*t away, if not we will get people worse than Bullwinkle Obama in the WH for many years to come.

I’m unwilling to get my panties in a twist because Obama shook the cretin’s hand and took the book handed to him. Heck, I still hold out my hand when my g-kids put their candy wrappers in it. It’s a reflex. At least Obama didn’t bow and scrape like he did to the Saudi king.

Hugo is an insufferable socialist thug, but, once diplomatically committed to the meeting, there was no good reason for Obama to rudely brush Chavez off or ignore him. Simple courtesy is just simple courtesy.

It’s what Obama does in the follow up that seems pivotal to me.

Here we have millions of people in Latin America who are pro-West and pro-US seeing the President of the United States extend legitimacy to thugs and cretins that wish to slaughter them.

That has got to be devastating.

It’s one thing to talk with a Chavez or Castro. Fine.

But at the very least promote US interests and US values when doing so.

Conversations are not one-way communications where one party gets to talk and the other just listens. The President needs to point out where we are right and they are wrong.

He doesn’t seem to understand that this is a battle of ideas and that his words and actions aren’t just being watched by Chavez or Castro. They’re being watched by others.

Get in the game Mr. President.

And attacking everything Bush did, did not hurt the Democrats. Even when Bush had high ratings the Democrats still accused the man of anything and everything they could invent, lie about or concoct…and it paid off for them in the end in away.

So, I would say that attacking Obama is fair game. After all, there is no need to lie about the man. He really does look as ridiculous as a lot of conservatives say he is. No need to lie or concoct anything.

If I were convinced that the President was going to use all of this international capital he’s accruing to promote US interests and freedom and democracy, I’d be willing to give him the benefit here.

But he seems to think that “nice talk” by itself will somehow alter the worldviews of the Chavezs and Castros and other anti-American radicals.

These are people driven by self-interest and power and nice words and gestures will not assuage them.

I hope the President understands this. I think he does.

But man, I’d like to see a little more backbone.

SteveMG on April 19, 2009 at 8:53 PM

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – Defending his brand of world politics, President Barack Obama said Sunday that he “strengthens our hand” by reaching out to enemies of the United States and making sure that the nation is a leader, not a lecturer, of democracy.

Obama’s foreign doctrine emerged across his four-day trip to Latin America, his first extended venture to a region of the world where resentment of U.S. power still lingers. He got a smile, handshakes and even a gift from incendiary leftist leader Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, and embraced overtures of new relations from isolated Cuban President Raul Castro.

“The whole notion was that if we showed courtesy or opened up dialogue with governments that had previously been hostile to us, that that somehow would be a sign of weakness,” Obama said, recalling his race for the White House and challenging his critics today.

“The American people didn’t buy it,” Obama said. “And there’s a good reason the American people didn’t buy it — because it doesn’t make sense.”

Still, Obama made sure to inject some go-it-slow caution and clear expectations for U.S. foes as he capped his trip to twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago with a steamy outdoor news conference.

On Cuba, he said Castro should release political prisoners, embrace democratic freedoms and cut fees on the money that Cuban-Americans send back to their families. Obama has lifted some restrictions on Cuba, and Castro responded with a broad, conciliatory overture.

“The fact that you had Raul Castro say he’s willing to have his government discuss with ours not just issues of lifting the embargo, but issues of human rights, political prisoners, that’s a sign of progress,” Obama said. “And so we’re going to explore and see if we can make some further steps.”

Our President has changed the game moving forward in the 21st century. Cons are stuck in the last century.

Well done sir.

The thing that annoys me the most about Obama and all this grinning and handshaking going on in Latin America, is that you know those people do not give a damn about their people. They are corrupt, they live in a feudalistic culture and they do not care about real reform…they just want to keep doing what they have always done and blame the gringo.

There were established settlements in South and Central America centuries before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. There were European style capitols in Latin America when the US won its independence..and yet somehow nothing is their fault or their responsibility.

Well one thing is for sure, Ortega and Chavez do not have to worry about Americans sneaking across their borders to get jobs washing dishes and picking fruit.

Allahpundit, thanks for posting this and expressing your anger. The president’s behavior on this visit has been outrageous, his explanation is infuriating, and he posed a challenge to his MSM followers present that apparently none of them could field. I bet Hot Air posters can.

How could Obama’s interaction with Hugo Chavez damage US interests?

My first thought: Obama’s demure response to Chavez could embolden Hugo and other enemies of the US to take even harsher measures against the US, hoping that the US will demure again.

Loxodonta on April 19, 2009 at 9:14 PM

No. Has Russia decided to help us with Iran? No. Has Iran decided to stop pursuing nukes? No. Has Pakistan stabilized and brought Islamic extremism under control? No. Has piracy stopped? No. Has the economy begun to recover? No. Have we devised a way to pay back the crippling debt this moron wants to dump on us? No. Has the UN stopped pandering to dictators and taking our money? No.

You have 10 years for Cuba to be free or I’m declaring Obama a miserable failure.

And I’ll give Obama the chance you never gave bush.

Now to the rest of the boards:

Stop feeding the trolls plz!

Chaz706 on April 19, 2009 at 9:22 PM

Sorry, but the hate is coming from the cons.

Let it go and move forward with the rest of the world cons.

Adults are in charge.

It will be okay.

More bumper sticker BS, no actual arguments or reaction to anything anyone has said. You’re pathetic.

I want to thank you. I like what you do here. You give people fire in their bellies. You get them worked up. You get them mad! You are EXACTLY what the conservatives need! We need to start showing the kind of hot bellied emotion and anger that you are able to stir in us.

So, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! Keep doing what you do, and hopefully conservatives will act on the emotion you stir up in them, whether it be at tea parties, or political rallies, or anywhere else that people gather. You get us pissed off, and we will spread the word to all that will listen!

Obama: …”The American people did not buy it.”

I am an American “people” and I think receiving Chavez the way you did has embarrassed you and the USA.

Obama: “They own CITGO.”

And how did “They” come to own CITGO and what does that have to do with anything? Is Obama saying that we have to kiss their ass because they have oil?

I have news for you.
WE have oil too. we just won’t drill for it!!!!

Too frigging lame…

You know, trolls are always annoying, but at least they usually attempt to debate at least on some level. This getalife character just throws these ridiculous bumper sticker/cheer leading lines.

Yeah, my favorite so far is her assertion that the economy has already been saved/fixed. Obama’s policies? They worked! It’s already happened!

Kensington on April 19, 2009 at 9:37 PM

I can’t think of much of anything Obama has done but play the celebrity president who smiles for the cameras while anti Americans either laugh at him or treat him like he won a beauty contest.

He is a joke.

Terrye on April 19, 2009 at 9:15 PM

If there weren’t so much at stake, Obama would be funny. Unfortunately, he has done a lot. How is our country going to afford to defend itself while paying back a mountain of Obama’s debt?

Mr. Pantywaist has no idea of the “Machismo” culture that Latinos …………

……… when he goes down there on ‘bended knee’, and ‘apologizes’ for the United States being ‘Macho’ in the past, the United States is now seen as ‘feminine’.

This fool has either a very good idea what he is doing to empower the socialist dictators of these Latin American countries………..

……… or his incompetence, inexperience, and lack of basic understanding of what is going on in the real world is going to cause harm to this country for decades to come.

Seven Percent Solution on April 19, 2009 at 8:27 PM

You get back to my quandary. Is Obama dangerously naive, inexperienced and incompetent? Or, is he dangerously anti-American and left-wing?

I don’t know yet. I just know he is dangerous.

And once again it will be a nice gesture. I bet Obama is really regretting giving Gordon all seasons of the Golden Girls when he could have given him some valuable literature…

getalife on April 19, 2009 at 9:29 PM

I’ll admit, it’s difficult to support a president… a president who doesn’t support our country and its values, and is actively, and deliberately, trying to destroy it.

RightWinged on April 19, 2009 at 9:49 PM

I understand Obama wants to win an award for World’s Nicest Guy. Fine. Lofty ambition. But to call this book a “nice gesture” dilutes the meaning of the word nice. If the book is a nice gesture, then a weird kind of relativism has just been thrown down on foreign policy. Obama doesn’t know what to say to it or how to react, because he’s inexperienced. But in the effort to disguise the inexperience something worse is happening. We’re being asked to suspend all interpretation about what Chavez has done. And that’s not right.

Is Obama dangerously naive, inexperienced and incompetent? Or, is he dangerously anti-American and left-wing?

I don’t know yet. I just know he is dangerous.

Loxodonta on April 19, 2009 at 9:42 PM

Obama is trying to peddle the false notion that American influence in world affairs is a bad thing. Our government should be in the business of ensuring America’s success and America’s future along with the security and opportunity of her people, not in the business of trying to make friends and garner popularity overseas for its own sake.

It seems that everything he has done to date, and every item on his agenda, is calculated to leave America broke, weakened , vulnerable economically and militarily, and less influential in the wider world.

Loxodonta on April 19, 2009 at 10:07 PM

Is Obama dangerously naive, inexperienced and incompetent? Or, is he dangerously anti-American and left-wing?

I’m hoping – against hope perhaps – that there’s a larger goal behind this nice face and friendly approach. That is, the President believes that by removing the image (unfair to be sure) of the US as the “bad guy” that the pressure will be shifted away from us and onto these regimes to change their behavior. That the Chavezs and Castros can’t blame the “evil America” anymore for their repressive policies.

But that assumes that world opinion – if it can be changed – will have an affect on these regimes.

If these rulers don’t care about the opinions of their own people, why would they be concerned about outsiders?

It also assumes that world opinion gives a hoot about these regimes either.

He’s taking quite a gamble.

All politics aside. Do you have a life? I have visited this site 3 times over the weekend for an average of 20 minutes each time and you have been here each time. A review of posts indicates you have nothing else going on. You should really get out in the sun light and develop some relationships with real people. No wonder you sound so ignorant when your whole existence is visiting left wing websites and cutting and pasting the talking points. Talk to some actual living and breathing people face to face who may be able to broaden your horizons. I feel so bad for you.

It does seem that way, doesn’t it?

I just don’t know yet whether this is because Obama is dangerously naive, inexperienced, incompetent, anti-American, left-wing or a mixture of all of them.

Whatever he is, whatever his intentions, the consequences do not seem good for our country.
