Axelrod: The tea-party movement could be “unhealthy”

posted at 2:44 pm on April 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

No surprise that the master of astroturfing would find a true grassroots movement distasteful. To be scrupulously fair, it’s not the parties themselves that he’s calling “unhealthy” but rather the potential of populist anger in an age of economic panic to boil over into more extreme forms. Even so, his intent is clear — to delegitimize the parties by framing them as a shot across the bow from some sort of inchoate militia. The same could have been said years ago, of course, about anti-war protests amid a climate of grotesque hatred on the left for George Bush. Imagine the screeching from the world’s Garofalos had Karl Rove sensed something “unhealthy” about those on a Sunday morning chat show.

Naturally, this is all punctuated with the moronic talking point about tax cuts this year for 95 percent of America without mentioning the inevitable tax hikes to come to pay off Obama’s leviathan deficits. After you watch, head over to CNN to see Carville pronounce the parties not only “harmless” but actually beneficial to Democrats because the only people who showed up were 72 years old or something.

Axelrod thinks it’s better for The Precedent, himself, to foment violence against corporate officers who step off of the administration’s line, or for The Precedent, himself, to demonize and denigrate talk show hosts and TV personalities.

The despicable, lying scumbags occupying the White House are really ‘occupying’ the White House.

the potential of populist anger in an age of economic panic to boil over into more extreme forms.

And who has been continuing the Chicken Little meme since Jan. 20? The [inherited] economy was in such terrible shape? Why did we need Porkulus? And so fast with no time to read it? Who egged on the busses to the AIG execs’ houses?

What community organizers and group named after a nut used confrontation and demonstration in front of banks or bankers houses to get subprime mortgages?

Populist anger is fine when it can be directed to Axelrod/Obama’s political goals. Otherwise, it’s “unhealthy.” Once the genie is out of the bottle, it might not be your genie any longer.

Wethal on April 19, 2009 at 2:51 PM

I voted in the democratic primary for joe biden.
I voted in the general for Obama/Biden.

Im 22 years old and of Puerto Rican descent.

I showed up at the tea party. As far as im concerned I don’t care why anyone voted for him he wasn’t supposed to double down on the deficit. There’s no real policy justification for that. Axlerod and Carville don’t seem to care but at the end of the day what they say doesn’t change why anyone showed up at the tea parties.

If people actually use the parties as a precursor to firing the liars and idiots in congress, then these were successful. Analyzing the makeup of those who showed up doesn’t really even matter.

ernesto on April 19, 2009 at 2:53 PM

That tax cut for 95% of Americans has already been eliminated. The budget resolutions recently passed by the House and the Senate don’t make room for it. If nothing changes the tax credit will be gone after 2010.

Mark1971 on April 19, 2009 at 2:53 PM

Axelrod is the teleprompter. Just watching him, you can see that he fears the tea parties. He knows that it was only a “cult following” and ACORN tricks that got his empty suit elected. People love this Country and they are not going to sit back and watch a bunch of Chicago thugs change the fabric of it. Yes, Mr. Alexrod, you must fear us, there is danger in numbers and our numbers are exploding. People have said “enough is enough” and you guys just don’t get it. It’s going to be so much fun to see Pelosi taken out of the Speakers chair in 2010.

suzyk on April 19, 2009 at 2:53 PM

Imagine the screeching from the world’s Garofalos had Karl Rove sensed something “unhealthy” about those on a Sunday morning chat show.

In reality, all of the 2003 anti-war demonstrations were organized by card-carrying Socialists. So Rove would have been telling the truth.

Goodale on April 19, 2009 at 2:57 PM

I don’t know about that AP. I think the tea parties probably are an indication of something unhealthy, but they are more like the antibodies collecting to fight the infection that Axelrod is part of. I expect he has a right to be a little afraid of what this all might mean to him and his fellow microbes; but this is not what he thinks it is. The more the DC pols treats this like an aberration the wider the divide between them and the people becomes. And THAT is what is unhealthy.

MikeA on April 19, 2009 at 2:58 PM

And by “terrifying”, I mean politically dangerous to those in power, not that the partiers would actually be violent. These folks should be frightening to Axelrod precisely because they are so unscary and normal.

To the people who are watching regular Sunday television (non-Interent users for news and opinion) Axelrod assumes (rightly I think) they don’t know HE is the one doing this kind of astroturfing. We just got through a campaign where the general public in no way knows that Axelrod is who he is condemning here. Ironic but I don’t see how he would be afraid to pull this. The general public doesn’t know the hypocrisy. They know what he has told them (from his POV) now and before Nov 4th to be true. Why shouldn’t he be confident he can spread his opinion about the tea parties?

While it’s easy — and totally called for — to shake our heads at all the craziness that has consumed the Republican Party as of late, I think Democrats need to be careful not to turn their backs on what could become a dangerous conflagration: a grassroots populist backlash fueled by the perception — one based on a lot of reality — that the Obama economic team is treating Wall Street with kid gloves, and acting as if the interests of the big banks are aligned with the public interest, even though again and again we are presented with evidence of how much they diverge.

From the owner of the Huffington Post saying it much better than I.

Axelrod: The tea-party movement could be “unhealthy”

David “Goebbels” Axelrod, you “”sir” are a fascist ass.

Not nearly as unhealthy as the Obama administration’s ever larger steps toward more and more fascism with now going so far as to put out blanket “Enemies of the State” reports that actually cover a majority of the country’s citizens. I don’t think even Hitler and Mussolini went that far.

Oklahoma tells Homeland Security where they can stuff the fascist Obama administration’s ‘Enemies of the State’ report.

Oklahoma’s two U.S. senators say a federal report on right-wing extremism is offensive for suggesting military veterans and Americans with certain widely held beliefs are potential terrorists.

‘Under DHS’s bizarre guidelines, many of our founders, were they alive today, would be classified as potential terrorist threats,” Coburn said Friday. “This carelessly written and poorly reasoned report is offensive to not only our veterans, but to every American who is passionately committed to the ideals of limited government, life and liberty that made our country great.’

The audacity of hope was for his campaign
Fear and demonetization will be for his reign
His candidacy was rather like that of a Henry Houdini
His presidency is shaping up to be much more like that of a Benito Mussolini

So “Tea Party” attendees, and Veterans, Pro-life, Anti Illegal “Immigration” and pro Constitution folks are to Obama and his henchmen what the Jews were to Hitler? Yes, I guess so.

If Barack Obama keeps this up much longer I will have to change Mussolini to Hitler and change Houdini to something that rhymes with it.

Americans exercising their Constitutional rights Obama through his henchmen likes to bait
But if he had any wisdom to go down that road he would hesitate
Even those in his own party who don’t tow his line
Will get hung out on the vine
As Obama’s snake oil starts to be seen through
He will add to his bag of tricks some more fascist venom too
With creepy Harry and royalist Nancy he likes to whore
Wont be forever till more and more know the score
Neville Chamberlain he would never emulate
As he thinks that he thought too small and gave too little too late
If scarin’ folks dont do the trick
His Kevorkian health care system will make you all die or at least get very sick
When it comes to crushing dissent and preaching hate
The fascist Obama team just can’t wait

After all, they are taking more money home in each pay check. There is going to be a rude awakening next April 15 when the duped masses find out that they could owe that money back depending on their tax situation. Either that or they will get a lower refund.

The MSM let Obama, Gibbs and Pelosi off the hook this week claiming 95% of Americans got a tax cut and only the 5% who didn’t were at the protests. They would make some powerful ads come midterms. They are lying about the tax cuts.

Same here. The one I was at, I saw very few people who could be classified as elderly (let’s say 65 or over). If I had to guess a median age for the crowd, I would say 35-40. Decent amount of young people, 25 and under; I was surprised. One was wearing a hoodie with a Misfits tee-shirt underneath. He was pretty enthusiastic too.

Dreadnought on April 19, 2009 at 3:30 PM

If anything unhealthy were to happen, I hope its the tarring and feathering of this goon.

bluelightbrigade on April 19, 2009 at 3:30 PM

Herr Axelrod needs to send over a better batch of trollbots than getaclue and strangeone, as that pair of turkeys just aint cuttin’ it.

MB4 on April 19, 2009 at 3:31 PM

A singularly ugly man with a face I wouldn’t trust to tell me the time of day.

How do such creeps make it so big?

Harry Schell on April 19, 2009 at 3:14 PM

Because he looks like Rudolf Hess, and plays the role of Joseph Goebbels???

phreshone on April 19, 2009 at 3:31 PM

I agree with Axelrod. The teaparty movement is just a head fake for what is really wrong with the republican party.
Evolve or die.

strangelet on April 19, 2009 at 3:24 PM

If we continue down this path we will “die”. You’re pretty ignorant of our past, our Constitution and how it’s been ignored. There’s no need for “evolution”. What there is a great need for is reverting to the original intent of the framers. Federal power must be scaled back … it has only grown and will continue to grow until it controls you. It already weilds enormous control over individuals … and states.

The enumerated powers in the Constitution are actually very few … intentionally so. Everything else was left up to the states and the people themselves.

If you agree with Axelrod, you’re either uniformed, stupid, or disagree with our Constituion and prefer to be a subject under tyranny than a free citizen.

I think you’re all three.

I have argued her point to get many to join you in protest.

Like the rest of the world but your failed ideology forbid it.

getalife on April 19, 2009 at 3:33 PM

So let’s get this straight. Protesting government expansion is unhealthy, but BDS was healthy?

Connie on April 19, 2009 at 3:34 PM

As for the attendees being old people, that does not jive with what I have seen. However, I would not doubt that younger people are more willing to support Obama and are also more willing to support socialist changes in the economy. They feel that way until they become property owners and tax payers. I would imagine the same was true 40 years ago as well.

Terrye on April 19, 2009 at 3:34 PM

In Axelrod’s world any challenge to the messiah is unhealthy. Plan for a much bigger and more focused one in July. My goodness, if anyone should understand true activism it should be “One” and his hoard of left wing loons.

Why don’t you show us how informed you are and describe this “failed ideolgy” for us. Go on … tell us precisely what this ideology is and why it “failed”. Please provide links if you cite examples.

darwin on April 19, 2009 at 3:36 PM

This chatter from above is probably meant to scare those who are on the fence about joining the next wave of TEA Parties. “Mutate into something that is unhealthy”, aka not something anyone of reasonable mind should want to be involved with.

“F” him… The message is that taxes and spending are out of control. It’s not made up, it’s getting worse, and now is the time to put a million Americans in DC to let this ass and his buddies know we will not be silenced.

From the owner of the Huffington Post saying it much better than I.

getalife on April 19, 2009 at 3:09 PM

She also adores a penthouse view. And gets allergic smelling hay.

BTW it wasn’t a “grassroots community” organizing the 2003 anti-war rallies, it was a rigid Socialist organization. You need Begala to get you some better talking points.

Del Dolemonte on April 19, 2009 at 3:36 PM

The tea party message needs to be more focused, the shotgun effect (taxes, spending, tarp, stimulas, etc)is confusing when talking about the movement. If we are not carful it could lead to someone running as a third party and that will split the vote and insure a dem win. Don’t forget Ross Parot brougt us Clinton

KBird on April 19, 2009 at 3:30 PM

I get what you are saying but the fact of the matter is this. If the GOP is not going to listen to us, then this is exactly what will happen. Maybe they are all on the same team trying to make it happen, who knows? But when Newt starts running his mouth and supporting RINOs, that is not going to work for 95% of the people at these tea parties.

They are trying their best to recast old hacks in a new light but no one is falling for that nonsense anymore. Did you hear all the RINOs that got booed off the stage at these tea parties? That SC dude tried his best to align himself with the crowd but it wasn’t cutting the mustard as well it should not!

We are a people of principle, not party. RINOs need not apply. Hey politicians, either walk your talk or shut up and go home!

PrincipledPilgrim on April 19, 2009 at 3:36 PM

A grassroot movement led by lobbyists and Fox News?

I don’t think so AP.

getalife on April 19, 2009 at 2:59 PM

Proof please.

ladyingray on April 19, 2009 at 3:37 PM

PrincipledPilgrim:

I think there is a better chance of getting the GOP to listen to you than there is of launching a successful third party. In truth folks like getalife here would like nothing better than a third party. Democrats would vote for any idiot the party puts on the ticket, if you split the opposition they will win with 40% to 45% of the vote. KBird is right.

Terrye on April 19, 2009 at 3:40 PM

when The Revolution comes, Axel-dick will be first in line for the guillotine.

Carville, being only an ugly old re-cycled Clinton Hump, might get to live–as long as he’s nice to Mary and the kids.

Janos Hunyadi on April 19, 2009 at 3:40 PM

Quoting Arianna Huffington is like quoting comic strip characters. The woman was a Republican all the way up until she saw a business opportunity in riling up the left.

msmveritas on April 19, 2009 at 3:40 PM

When the Bush tax cuts are left to expire by Obama, the first massive tax increase begins.

The current covert TAX increases are upon “sins”.

Tobacco, gambling, alcohol, transfats, etc., etc., etc.

Axelrod is a dissembling tool.

Obama is a duplicitous CHILD.

The country is being dismantled and screwed by these fantasy-bound liars.

Tea Parties are Resistance to this glib government rape of the Constitution.

Bag the bums!

And dump them in 2010.

profitsbeard on April 19, 2009 at 3:41 PM

The Dems and Obama are in a slow boil, below-the-surface, panic. The debt Obomba is about ready to sink the US.

Indeed. I kind of know what it was trying to say, though I can’t figure out what “the world” has to do with American TEA parties. They just don’t train the people in the Pakistani boiler-rooms as well as they used to. Frankly, I’m offended that would send such pathetic trolls to us.
