Video: GOP rep who voted for TARP booed mercilessly at tea party
posted at 2:07 pm on April 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
Emphasis on mercilessly, especially when he says, “I have devoted my life to the conservative cause.” The Palmetto Scoop caught it all, and no wonder: Barrett’s been eating crap from South Carolinians for his TARP vote for months so everyone knew what was coming here, right down to the guy screaming “Go home!” for the full six-minute duration. Believe it or not, according to CNN, Barrett’s planning to run for governor next year. Don’t get your hopes up, Gresh.
Normally the sight of a Republican being booed off a stage would be instant “Daily Show” material, but Stewart’s naturally got his own narrative for the tea parties. They’re about Obama, Obama, and nothing but Obama. Just ask Cody Willard.

I doubt half of these people were even Republicans….I still think the guy is a strong contender for Governor….He’s no Sanford, but he’s pretty solid usually..
therightwinger on April 18, 2009 at 3:46 PM
Even if he were one of our own this demonstrates that we hold our won to a much higher standard than do the Dems. They’ll let any fool, criminal, thief, loser stay in office as long as they faithfully vote along the party line.
DerKrieger on April 18, 2009 at 3:47 PM
Come now, are you saying that one vote can’t possibly reveal a conservative pretender? So then, if a conservative votes to repeal the 2nd amendment he can still make a legitimate claim to conservatism? 1st amendment? Nationalizing banks?
FloatingRock on April 18, 2009 at 3:47 PM
Yeah. Well that’s the big question isn’t it? I’ve read this past week that Tarp didn’t unfreeze markets after all. Which the whole argument at the time after it was past, was basically – well wait a few more days and it will.
Spirit of 1776 on April 18, 2009 at 3:48 PM
Glad you’re here today because I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of Liberal opposition to Conservatism and can’t seem to get a coherent answer. Got one?
DerKrieger on April 18, 2009 at 3:49 PM
Can someone name some “perfect” Republicans out there right now that are 100% conservative, never waver and never buckle and would please everyone 24/7/365?
Just a couple would suffice…
StevefromMKE on April 18, 2009 at 3:49 PM
Based on the percentages, I’d say those were requirements.

Barrett was not a rino??? Just listen to him try and pander.. that sounds like Rino speak to me..
AND NOBODY IS BUYING IT.
“uh… blame obama.. and liberals.. and.. uh.. yeah..”
Seriously.. wake up. This is exactly why people are pissed. I don’t care if his voting record shows him flying around like superman shooting lazerbeams at abortionists and jumping over commies in a single bound,

Flush em out and let’s get some people with a spine.

Capitalism is an integral part of conservatism, IMO. You don’t have to be a conservative to be a capitalist, but a conservative is necessarily a capitalist. Any disagreement?

I’m thinking more and more Consevative Party. The GOP has abandoned conservative principles and even gave us a nominee for POTUS that delighted in reaching across the isle to poke conservatives in the eye and pass liberal unconstitutional legislation. RINO’s have taken over the party.
I know Rush disagrees but I don’t see how we purge the party of pandering RINO’s without TERM LIMITS which the electoids will nevr agree to. Conservative Party and as a major plank TERM LIMITS.
Eights enough for POTUS its enough for congress and Senate scum . Do away with their prok and lifetime pensions. Each bill must be its own and voted on as one bill not added to a comprehensive rippoff.
dhunter on April 18, 2009 at 4:01 PM
Barrett: “I respect you, I honestly do.” Sounds like the kind of respect Bubba Clinton exhibited when he told Juanita Broderick, “You might want to put some ice on that.”
Western_Civ on April 18, 2009 at 4:06 PM
Has he disagreed with term limits? Maybe just the fact that they’re so many indentured libs and rino’s who refuse to give up the pay and pension to want to limit their power and prestige by only being able to serve a handful of terms.
StevefromMKE on April 18, 2009 at 4:06 PM
I don’t subscribe to either party or ideology.
Again, I am a proud Independent that will support our President and want more change.
getalife on April 18, 2009 at 4:07 PM
While I agree a Conservative party would be ideal I don’t think it would do anything but split the GOP vote and give win after win to the Dems who will laugh all the way to the WH. And they will double their efforts to paint Conservatives with the broad DHS brush and even get unwitting assistance from the GOP, “see the Conservatives are even to extreme for the GOP”
DerKrieger on April 18, 2009 at 4:09 PM
Term limits will increase corruption and most certainly won’t decrease dependency on party machine politics.
If you are term limited, and you are using politics as a career move, you will be encourage to exchange politics for job/etc with no accountability at all if not answering to a vote.
Term limits is a can of worms that increases the problems, imho.

Respectfully disagree. Capitalism is just the relatively unrestricted use of paper* currency to indicate wealth.
The few restrictions on accumulation is certainly a conservative stance, but the existance of paper currency isn’t.
* or any marker with essentially no intrinsic value, like the old platic mil coins
fronclynne on April 18, 2009 at 4:11 PM
What is with all the people trying to start a new party? The Republican Party is fine. We just need to get people in there who stick to fiscal conservatism, a strong defense, and yes..be accepting of people who disagree on social issues…
therightwinger on April 18, 2009 at 4:11 PM
Ok, just what change has he brought that you support and what other change would you like to see. And again, what disagreements do you have with the conservative point of view? You say you don’t subscribe to ideology, evasion, but surely you have well formed opinions on the range of issues that you have a disagreement with the established Conservative position.
DerKrieger on April 18, 2009 at 4:12 PM
South Carolina is not the place to be a RINO.
1. They are jaded, they screwed up when they voted for McCain and they know it. The people that did not vote for McCain get a big fat “I told you so” to their credit. Lesson learned wishy washy Republicans shall not be tolerated.
2. They have Sanford for goodness sake, his reputation puts a huge spotlight on any RINOs.
3. McCain’s toady Lindsey Graham has defintely made the road tough to hoe for any other RINO. He and Sanford just polarize the state. The RINO camp is small indeed composed of the GOP machine not the people that are going to knock on doors.
San Diegans another protest is scheduled for May 16th

Sorry I don’t know that he disagrees with term limits . It was third party I was refering to. Rush thinks it will guarantee Dem victory. I don’t agree. I believe there will be enough of a revolution if Presidente Pinnochio and the Dems destroy this country ,as much as I believe they will, that both parties will be ripe for the purging and it might be just the time in history to rid the USA of all the scumbag, traitorous carreer politicians and give the government back to the people. Witting or unwitting assistance is just what the Dems have been getting from the GOP with cross islers like Mccain and Dem lite policy postions like McCain.
Panderers, going along to get along, ridin the liberal train where they see gain, and pissin all over consevatives and consevative principles. The GOP is not the solution they are part of the problem and I am getting pissed that they are the only game in town for real conservatives. I think we can create a better alternative and if they are bannished to the dust heap of history then so be it they have asked for it. It may not happen in 2012 but by 2016 we will look like Cuba or Venezuela and Americans might just be ready to take their country back from the two party ruling elites.
dhunter on April 18, 2009 at 4:23 PM
The change is happening fast and it is hard to keep up. The list is too long but the “established Conservative positions” makes it harder for real change and it will take time.
The last eight years have really moved us back and that is being changed first but we are finally moving forward.
getalife on April 18, 2009 at 4:23 PM
You may correct me if I am wrong here, but I see little but a left leaning perspective to your posts. I really doubt you have voted very far off the Democrat ticket unless you decided to vote for Nader or a socialist.
Hawthorne on April 18, 2009 at 4:23 PM
Yep, you better move fast, because the left needs to get what it can while it can. The only real change that is happening right now is people getting fed up with the government.
Hawthorne on April 18, 2009 at 4:27 PM
Hmmm, I didn’t look up the definition of capitalism—and I’m not sure you’re definition is correct either—but by “capitalism”, I meant to refer to the free exchange of goods and services among free men and women, prices being set by simple supply and demand. Currency is merely an extension of the classical bartering system from which it evolved that increases flexibility. The quality of any given system of currency is a separate matter, I think.

I am well aware of McCain and his fellow RINO travelers. But tell me, in the event of three way races for any office how many will go to the GOP, the Conservative party, or the Dems? Especially given the very narrow margins of victory in many races? All we will do is split the opposition vote.
DerKrieger on April 18, 2009 at 4:33 PM
I win.
DerKrieger on April 18, 2009 at 4:37 PM
You may be right, but it isn’t necessarily that simple. There are more people that don’t vote than do, and for many of them the reason is that neither party suits their interests and there is no alternative. If the mood of the country changes and an alternative is presented, it’s possible that all the loyal D voters and all the loyal R voters will continue voting for their respective letters but a new party that actually stands for something could win regardless.
I don’t think we’re there yet but it could happen.
FloatingRock on April 18, 2009 at 4:37 PM
This guy was insulting our intelligence. Voting one way – and then showing up to say another.
Typical politician and a great example of a man who should not only be OUT OF OFFICE – this bum should be thrown out of the country.

The perfect is the enemy of the good. Opposing the lesser of two evils is supporting the greater evil.
JohnJ on April 18, 2009 at 4:41 PM
There are two fairly conservative parties already inexistence. Did you know?
The America First Party
The Constitution Party
Neither gets many votes. Most people are completely unaware of them. If you’re serious about a 3rd party, look ‘em up. They’re already established so no need to start up another one. Just work to build one of these.
DerKrieger on April 18, 2009 at 4:41 PM
Ross Perot proved that this is possible. Before he melted down, he had created a very strong following in a very short time. A new party that developed some financing and was capable of getting out their message could very well succeed in capturing the conservative vote.
Currently neither party represents conservatives. The Democrats may actually have as many conservatives in office right now as the Republicans do because of the conservative backlash against the Republicans last election.
If a true Conservative Party were to emerge and provide a cogent and viable alternative to the Republicans, the Republican party will die. The Democrats will not lose many voters at all. The Republicans on the other hand will lose the majority of their party. What remains of the Republicans would be a farcical parody of the Democrats and will not be different enough to gain much power.
Hawthorne on April 18, 2009 at 4:49 PM
That’s a statement at war with itself. You can’t, simultaneously, be independent and declare fealty in advance. Certainly not “proudly” anyway. Don’t insult the independents who appear here.

DerKrieger on April 18, 2009 at 4:33 PM
Sorry DerKrieger didn’t mean to attack you personally. I just think that we are all being ignored by the party elites, inside the belt way politicians, and media caball.
I am betting in 2, 4 or 8 more years there will be enough people pissed at both parties to throw the bums out. I certainly saw a cross section of America at my tea party that I have never seen and virtually all have never done anything like this before. I don’t think it’s a party thing although the Republican Party hijacked the one here. Thats OK we’re one of the last real strongholds in the country I fear.
The policies and spending being put in place now, coupled with the incompetence and corruption becoming evident by Presidente Pinnochio’s appointments may just set the scene for a real Reformer that can cross party lines and give the country back to the people!
I don’t see other way to purge the parties of the politics of old cronism and porkulation. Automatic raises should be gone and real, constitutional finance laws put in place . The idea that unions can confiscate dues and portion off to politicians and ACORN can get Gov’t assistance must end. The GOP has allowed it by voting with the Dems how are we to trust them?

Being mocked in the public square, as this congressman has now learned, is the first step in getting the Congress to change their voting patterns.
It’s a powerful tool that Collins, Snow and Specter will hopefully be learning soon before they do further damage. Afterwards they should be thrown out of the party.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn spoke at the tea party rally in Nashville as well as a few of the smaller ones. She earned it. She’s consistently conservative. As my husband said when he introduced her, “The only time we have to call Marsha’s office is to thank her for always doing the right thing!” She was heartily welcomed at tea parties in TN. Unfortunately, we have two RINO Senators. I told my husband that if Corker is the Republican nominee for Senate next time, I swear I will write in “Lizard People” rather than vote for him again.

This is a great analogy of what is really happening.
5 minutes straight, and despite being boo’d, the guy continues and thinks that the crowd is supporting him. He’s too busy speaking for what he thinks his constitutes want rather than listening to what they need.
Once again, “Let them eat cake.”
And, sorry, despite being a conservative, I disagree with term limits. There are term limits. They’re called elections. Imposing artificial limits per representative doesn’t solve the problem at all. Get rid of one clown, another will just take his place.
CatsGodot on April 18, 2009 at 7:00 PM
The message here is that he did NOT represent his constituents on the TARP vote and he is paying the price. That is what elections are for. There is never going to be a “Perfect” republican but when the chips are down to the last negotiations and he/she gives in on a major issue to get something else, its over for them. Then its up to us to make the decision to re-elect or not.

2 points:
-Term limits are needed to dissuade career politicians from building little empires – think Ted Kennedy or John Kerry. It works for POTUS it can work for congress. We need to head back to the age of ‘citizen statesmen’. Step up, do your best for your country, and hand over to someone else. If you can’t get it done in 8 years, let someone else have a go. Remember, these people work for us, not the other way round. Being a senator or congressman should be hard work, not be a cushy life full of perks.
-To those up-thread who were disparaging independents, read some history of American politics. There was a time before politics had coalesced around 2 main political parties where ‘independents’ were more numerous and held more sway. Be honest, the 2 candidates offered up by the DNC and GOP sucked. And it looks like the GOP is going to need a good house cleaning before we get a decent ‘small govt’ representation choice.

I would say that free markets are what’s integral to conservatism. Capitalism can be used as a means to control populations as much as government. Take the current banking cartel that now owns much of the government. Debt is being used to control the destiny of this nation, if there a truly free market there would by no Federal Reserve. The Fed is simply a monopoly and represents the worst face of capitalism.
True_King on April 18, 2009 at 8:25 PM
What the heck did anybody get out of TARP that they don’t deserve to be imprisoned for?
These RINOs (including Gresham Barrett) are trying to act like there’s no big deal here – like this is just one random vote out of how ever many hundred the Senate takes every year.
It’s not like we’re talking about deciding whether to cave in to peer pressure and vote to pay for Ted Kennedy’s memorial service in the hopes that it might butter up somebody on the other side of the aisle.
We’re talking about seven hundred billion dollars – stolen from the treasury and untraceably handed out to bribe-payers in one fell swoop.
I’m afraid saying “oops” just won’t cut it.

To a point. Some in the crowd were from his district, as he reps the 3rd district. But he was speaking in the 4th district, which is represented by Bob Inglis. Inglis was smart enough not to have been there. If he had showed up to speak, he would have probably been forcibly been removed from the stage, carried about 3 blocks south, and tossed off the bridge in the middle of I-385 rush hour traffic. Barrett got off light.

OK, for folks here who believe that TARP was essentially a bad idea, please suggest an alternatives to stabilize the Libor spreads during that span of time. And if you think complete standstill of all business activity is a good idea, I would beg to disagree.
Thanks…

Every politician that voted for TARP or the stimulus needs to be kicked out of office. Their ignorance and poor judgment have left this nation horribly vulnerable to the ravages of hyper inflation. When the savings of millions of hard working Americans vanishes, we’ll see the consequences of the actions of Congress.

Is this what the Koskids did way back with Joe Lieberman? This ideological purity test gets way out of hand when you’re committing political eugenics against certain Republicans that don’t fit the bill. It’s almost as if we’re saying: Conservative A never votes to raises your taxes, he supports the troops, listens and help his constituents, but dammit, he voted for TARP and now he should be punished! Get him out now!
I asked earlier how many Republicans are 100% staunch 24/7/365 conservatives people could get behind and I saw only two. That’s not exactly a large coalition people.
I’m not saying we should have no standards or rules that we live by, since the left seems to have none other than getting as much power over people as they can, but when I see people like Michelle Malkin throwing Paul Ryan and others basically under the bus (forgetting the work they’ve done so far), I get the feeling nobody will ever fit the bill and they probably never can.

If you voted for TARP or scam-u-lus you’re o-u-t in my book.
Let’s roll.
