Video: GOP rep who voted for TARP booed mercilessly at tea party

posted at 2:07 pm on April 18, 2009 by Allahpundit

Emphasis on mercilessly, especially when he says, “I have devoted my life to the conservative cause.” The Palmetto Scoop caught it all, and no wonder: Barrett’s been eating crap from South Carolinians for his TARP vote for months so everyone knew what was coming here, right down to the guy screaming “Go home!” for the full six-minute duration. Believe it or not, according to CNN, Barrett’s planning to run for governor next year. Don’t get your hopes up, Gresh.

Normally the sight of a Republican being booed off a stage would be instant “Daily Show” material, but Stewart’s naturally got his own narrative for the tea parties. They’re about Obama, Obama, and nothing but Obama. Just ask Cody Willard.

Are you missing a “T” in that headline? Like, “booted mercilessly”?

No?

Dang.

The reaction he’s getting reminds me of the reaction getalife gets when he/she/it shows up on a thread.

kingsjester on April 18, 2009 at 2:14 PM

So he will never turn his back on us?
Only when he votes.
It’s all the fault of the “liberal Democrats”?
How about the liberal Republicans like him that voted for this POS?

I think he’s just making a speech so he can use the clips in his next campaign, with the sound edited out.

PattyJ on April 18, 2009 at 2:16 PM

I bet the media had a real tough time trying to figure out what to do with this story. On one hand, a Republican is being browbeaten. On the other hand, it’s by mostly conservatives, and we can’t have them looking like they actually have principles and aren’t partisan hacks.

Sir Corky on April 18, 2009 at 2:16 PM

That was brutal. I loved it!

epluribusunum on April 18, 2009 at 2:16 PM

Pandering ass.

Socmodfiscon on April 18, 2009 at 2:17 PM

We had our congresscritter Kevin Brady show up to our tea party. He got a few boo’s and jeers but we were for the most part respectful. He voted for Bush’s TARP 1 and some folks have been giving him hell. He showed up at one of our meetups too and took questions. Same bunch of folks but they really hammered him in that venue.

Anyway, we have put him on notice.

conservnut on April 18, 2009 at 2:19 PM

That was pitiful.

But, GOOD. Let all of congress see this…and let US stand together in ALL states, south, east, west, north. No MORE RINOS.

Sir Corky on April 18, 2009 at 2:16 PM

Yeah, it’s got to be driving them crazy, they love seeing a republican get hammered. But can’t figure out how to twist it.

It’s probably driving some of our resident trolls nuts too.

conservnut on April 18, 2009 at 2:21 PM

And, speaking from here in Virginia, Cantor is next, the spineless coward. He even voted with the mob in favor of the 90% tax on bonuses, and then a couple weeks ago went to Hollywood and promised more taxpayer subsidies for their oh-so-wonderful movies. And this guy is still being talked about as a future GOP leader. Maybe so, if the Republicans want to guarantee a third party. Argh.

AdrianG on April 18, 2009 at 2:22 PM

Go Home! Too Late! Just more Republican rhetoric. They send these solicitation letters telling us about liberal dems and how bad they are, and then they vote Democrat lite. Just think of how different it would have been if, in 2001-2006, Republicans had made the tax cuts permanent. If Republicans had voted for school vouchers allowing private schools to flourish and get us out from under teacher’s unions and propaganda. If Republicans had voted for balancing the budget. If they had addressed the social issues. But no! They let us down big time and now they expect to come as the heroes. I think not! We need to enact term limits in Congress to eliminate all the career politicians and bring in people of principle.

Christian Conservative on April 18, 2009 at 2:22 PM

Barrett: Why didn’t the pandering work? I had all kinds of Republican red meat in there. Why were they booing me?

Chief of Staff: They figured out that you’re a hypocrite and they are pissed!

Barrett: Uh oh, I’m in trouble…

TheBigOldDog on April 18, 2009 at 2:22 PM

He got what he deserved. Perhaps he should have considered his constituents before he voted?

Or how about if they had just closed the border!!!

Christian Conservative on April 18, 2009 at 2:23 PM

“You may turn your back…” Yeah, way to flip it around. Typical politician. The boos are because, Congressman, they feel you turned your back to fiscal responsibility when it mattered most.

Mommypundit on April 18, 2009 at 2:19 PM

Somebody needs to put it on a DVD and mail it to every single Republican elected official in the country. Then people need to show up at the primaries and vote against the hypocrites.

TheBigOldDog on April 18, 2009 at 2:26 PM

Warm and fuzzies. More please.

canditaylor68 on April 18, 2009 at 2:26 PM

One of the local Congressman was suppose to show up at ours according to many in the crowd. He wasn’t on the program and I never saw him. A good move on his part considering the “Kick Them Out” attitude of the crowd. I don’t know how he voted on TARP because he’s not my rep.

Cindy Munford on April 18, 2009 at 2:28 PM

TheBigOldDog on April 18, 2009 at 2:26 PM

Cindy Munford on April 18, 2009 at 2:28 PM

I love the gentleman yelling, “Go Home!” throughout his speech and about new “Tea” legislation, “Too late!”

Then the MC said, “Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought I suspected a bit of resistance in the crowd.”

The gentleman: “Ya think?”

Priceless.

conservative pilgrim on April 18, 2009 at 2:28 PM

He got what he deserved. Perhaps he should have considered his constituents before he voted?

Kronos on April 18, 2009 at 2:23 PM

Yep, we cornered Brady on that subject and asked him “why did you vote for TARP 1 after we flooded your office with instructions not to?” He admitted that it was a mistake, and thought that we did not understand the gravity of the situation. He also admitted that we did know what we were telling him after all and vowed to give our wishes more consideration in the future. He better!

conservnut on April 18, 2009 at 2:29 PM

This politician really thought he had a winner of a speech throwing out red meat to the crowd, but everything he said contradicts his voting record. Thankfully the crowd is an informed one and didn’t buy one bit of it.

The camera was right in front of the speaker; I believe the booing was much worse than what we hear.

conservative pilgrim on April 18, 2009 at 2:29 PM

What did this guy expect?

That’s what I’m wondering.

Did he expect to get some cheering? Some drinks bought for him? Get to autograph some breasts? Shake lots of hands? Slap some high-fives? Have people yell “F*CK YEA” during his talk?

Psh.

blatantblue on April 18, 2009 at 2:30 PM

Like I said in the Green Room if any body who voted for any of these bills to go to the tea parties, they will not be embraced or fall for this crap. They wont be able to piggyback off of this movement.

We need to stop listening to ANYONE giving a speech near bunting. It seems to be the sign that the speaker is an ass.

Laura in Maryland on April 18, 2009 at 2:36 PM

If, as he said, he’s really devoted his life to conservatism, & he messed up on one vote, then the crowd is overreacting to the point of stupidity. If what he said is far from true, I’d boo, too, a little bit when he first walked up there. Then I’d evaluate what he had to say.

jgapinoy on April 18, 2009 at 2:36 PM

Hopefully, Congress is paying attention. I have my doubts.

Conservative_SAHM on April 18, 2009 at 2:36 PM

If we vote out everyone who voted for TARP and the Stimulus, Dem and the 3 Republicans, we can really start to make an impact…maybe it’s not too late…

At my rally there was a lot of yelling “Vote them all out!”

conservnut on April 18, 2009 at 2:29 PM

So he said that he was inexcusably wrong, AND that you don’t know what you’re talking about?

He’s talking out of both sides of his mouth, and putting both feet in at the same time.

logis on April 18, 2009 at 2:42 PM

SCREW THEM ALL. This situation is too serious for partisanship.

Dr. Manhattan on April 18, 2009 at 2:44 PM

then the crowd is overreacting to the point of stupidity.

I do not agree. If a politician chooses to speak at an event like these, especially someone with political ambitions as this man has, it functions to co-op the crowd. The man failed at the most important moment; it’s easy to be pro-life if you never have to make the choice as Palin eloquently said, it’s easy to be fiscally conservative until you have to make a hard choice. He failed his constituents’ wishes, and he earned their rebuke.

Spirit of 1776 on April 18, 2009 at 2:44 PM

Hum… CNN covered it huh…

CCRWM on April 18, 2009 at 2:44 PM

We are MAD and we’re not going to take it anymore!

We need to do this daily to each and every representative that is not listening to us. We need to flood their emails, voicemail, fax machines until they get the message. Obama still doesn’t know that there were tea parties…..I hear he can get a surgery for that.
Rahm: “It’s just stuck up there, president. If you push and we pull, you can pull it out….btw, sir, you may want to wait a week so that the whole hubbub about you shaking the hand of a socialist tyrant blows over and our friends in the MSM can spin it so that we can make those damn peasants look like it was their fault….yeah.”

HornetSting on April 18, 2009 at 2:45 PM

Uncontrolled deficit spending is the quick road to ruin.

tarpon on April 18, 2009 at 2:47 PM

Watch him desperately try and get some positive feedback… military? abortion? Congressional pay raises?….

This rally was about a tyrannical and bloated federal government and his vote is part of the problem…

“You inspired me…” apparently not enough.

While not giving anyone who voted for TARP as pass, I have to admit that the fear mongering attached to that legislation was intense. The whole time I was emailing and calling my reps to vote against it, my stomach was churning.

Cindy Munford on April 18, 2009 at 2:50 PM

That was awesome! Harsh and to the point. I’m sick of my state senators who talk conservative and then vote the opposite! I wish Sen. Hatch had shown up to our rally, I would have loved to boo that guy! We need to clean the Republican house in each of our states.

What bothers me is in 2010 we won’t have anyone but the same old same old to vote for. People are mad but if we can’t get some new really consertives to run against these people we are in the same boat. Money talks and dodd is seeing this. I would support and give money to any new person who would keep their word. I hope the the r’s give us some new choices that ‘might’ save our country. Just be honest with us and do what you say you will do. Pleaseeee!

It’s great to see conservatives uniting for a common cause finally.
It’s been disgusting to watch us roll over on everything constantly, while the left is all about unity and action.
I want to see more booing and conservatives standing up for what their core principles are.
Smaller government, personal liberty, strong defense, or hit the road.
