“Thomas Paine”: It’s time for a million-person march on Washington

posted at 4:50 pm on April 18, 2009 by Allahpundit

Glenn Beck was pushing this idea weeks ago but it’s more plausible now given the success of the tea parties, about which “Paine” is properly excited. A friend who was at an event where he spoke e-mailed me this week to scold me for sniping at him, promising that I’d like him if I just gave him a chance. I do like the idea of fiscal cons flexing their voting muscle with protests; that’s why I support the parties. What I don’t like is this guy’s habit of lapsing into rhetoric about a second revolution, legislators ignoring the people “at your peril,” and, per the letter from a Marine that he reads near the end here, the idea that “our country is under attack from an enemy within” — which isn’t the first time he’s used language about enemies and attacks to describe policy disagreements. I get that the character he’s playing obliges him to use a certain amount of revolutionary parlance, just like I get that I’ll take plenty of heat in the comments for being a squish who’s afraid to fight nutroots fire with fire, etc, but what can I tell you. That sort of rhetoric leaves me cold, and I can’t be the only one. And yes, yes, I know, I’m a RINO whom the party’s better off without anyway. No need to remind me.

One interesting detail: Note his salute to protesters past who marched in the name of green power and ending wars to save lives. He really is aiming this message at both sides of the aisle.

At least.

Spirit of 1776 on April 18, 2009 at 7:11 PM

getalife:

The economy collapsed.

Did you miss it?

I must have. Because while I saw a STOCK MARKET COLLAPSE that sent shock waves through business, the world, and the currency, the ECONOMY ITSELF DID NOT COLLAPSE.

Do you even know the difference between a STOCK MARKET collapse and an ECONOMICAL collapse?

The former occurred in 1929, with the New York Stock Exchange going under and leading to the Great Depression, and with 9/11 giving the stock market a hiccup.

Businesses folded, the economy buckled, and the government struggled to maintain order.

But (and this is major) the ECONOMY DID NOT COLLAPSE AND ENTER FREEFALL. While both Hoover and FDR can be greatly faulted for their often idiotic responses to it, they were competent enough to stabilize the currency and keep America running up until the outbreak of WWII strangled the Depression.

The collapse of AN ECONOMY, on the other hand, is far different from 1929 or 9/11

It happened in post-WWI Germany, Post-WWII Hungary, Mugabe’s Zimbabwe, and in Mexico during the Civil War/Revolution.

Do you know the difference?

In a STOCK MARKET collapse, businesses fold, a recession or a depression starts, and people struggle to put food on the table.

In the collapse of AN ECONOMY, businesses fold utterly, the national currency literally checks out (see the Reichmark, the Pengo, the Zimbabwean dollar, etc), most LOOSE the ability to put ANY food on the table, and society as a whole either cracks or even goes into freefall because the pre-existing structures of business and government pretty much collapse.

Yes, we’ve taken a hit. But not an unusual one. Our infrastructure works and the economy is weakened but still very much alive.

Big difference, isn’t it?

Or ignore it and give the greedy a free pass.

Since when have I ever advocated giving the Ken Lays and the Madoffs of the world a free pass? PERSECUTE them and any tied to it.

However, unfortunately for you, that would also involve probes and persecutions into ACORN, into Frannie May and Freddie Mac, and into some of the “adults” you so love who chaired the oversight commission and allowed naked graft to go unpunished and unreported.

Dosn’t sound so appealing to you now, does it?

And as for giving the “greedy” a free pass, may I point out that Greed is not a crime. And those who ethically and lawfully pursue their greed should not be punished because of some Orwellian Thoughtcrime.

As for the greedy who DON’T do so, well, give them a fair trial and toss ‘em in the slammer.

Now, are you actually going to answer my questions or respond to my points?

unfortunaty for us some of the decisions by obama and congress will never be challenged.

more importantly don’t rely too much on the SCOTUS they’ve been politicized too. In fact we have no clear majority there…we are at the whims of one twitchy swing vote in Justice Kennedy…do you want some of these obama policies being ratified by that one swing vote?

There are other pitfalls…when FDR’s New Deal was found unconstitutional a few times FDR expanded and packed the court so he could get his majorities…

Aside from that danger the supposedly “conservative” court has had a mixed record already just look at the assault on private property in the Kelo v New London case where they interpreted the “takings clause” in the Constitution to mean that imminent domain could be used by the government to take your property away and give it to someone they felt could pay more taxes…

Scotus is a double edged sword at best. they could end up ratifying and further legitimizing despicable policies.

elduende on April 18, 2009 at 6:57 PM

As I understood Honda’s original point, it was that the time for panic isn’t yet because a lot of this crap could get overturned. You’re correct that the SCOTUS might let it fly. Heck, the left could even take out a couple of Justices “by accident” to give Obama a chance to replace them (if you think I put that past them, well I don’t). Point being that while two branches of the Federal government seem hopelessly compromised, the third might be able to stem the tide long enough to give people a chance, now that they’ve had a sneak preview of Obamaism is action, to divide the government and slow things down.

They were “compelled” by the bank regulators to accept TARP money so that the great unwashed could not tell the good banks from the troubled banks. Because of the evolving rules the government keeps coming up with B B & T want to return the money asap. As you might expect it is easier said then done and they are having to go through a “process”. The tea party was an exercise. Personally I’m looking forward to July 4. That will be the turning point one way or the other.

Unlike the Obamanites, most Conservatives have jobs. April 15 is not a holiday so most could only attend in spirit. Obama is able to assemble his hordes on demand because they are mostly sitting around doing nothing besides waiting on their welfare checks. They have time and public transportation provided so they can fawn at the feet of their entitlement messiah.

However July 4 is a holiday. If there is going to be a demonstration to end all demonstrations, that will be the best chance to take it to the Hill.

A lot of people saw the AIG bonus fiasco and decided the government couldn’t be trusted as a business partner.

Well one of my favorite patriots was Patrick Henry. Here is a bit of wisdom from him on the eve of our Revolution:

We shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable — and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come.

I’m not suggesting war… but I would certainly like to avoid the slavery of debt for my children and your children.

Wanting to get their filthy, greedy hands on programs that help people you call ponzi schemes.

Oh yes, here’s the details I was asking for. Not spewing out talking points at all.

This is the getalife I like to see, frothing at the mouth and railing against the eeeeeevil Republicans.

The GOP hasn’t managed to deregulate much of anything, nor have they managed to steal anyone’s Social Security checks. They’re almost as much to blame for government interference causing this mess.

All Social Security has managed to do is take money from taxpayers that they may have well used to fund their own retirements.

Or not…it doesn’t matter because unlike you, we individualists are okay with people wasting their own money as long as they don’t insist on others footing the bill when they crash and burn.

All the Democrat-dominated Congresses of the last seventy years have managed is to hijack the surpluses we were collecting from Social Security to pour into the general fund, leaving it a black hole of IOUs. We’re now moving into the territory of paying out more than we’re taking in, with no surplus to draw from.

Helping people, indeed. The real theft has taken place by a federal government trying to “help people” and making things infinitely worse, if there was a real problem to solve at all.

If you’re counting that 300,000 out of the 300 million Americans – which makes sense since a lot of people brought their kids – it’s actually .1%.

In any case, the point is that it’s not that many people. Of course, many people might not have shown up who wanted to show up because of work, or they lived in a town where it might not have been easy to go or something…but yeah. I think it’s an impressive turnout but it’s certainly not a majority of anything. If you want to find that, you have to look at polls, and a majority of Americans by just about any measure like Democrats and like Obama.

Proud Rino on April 18, 2009 at 6:19 PM

Dear Proud Rino,

Historians the world over have estimated that during the Revolutionary War about a third of our populace wanted overthrow of the King’s tyranny, and about a third were very opposed to same, with the middle third doing what they do best, sitting like today’s RINOs on the sidelines.

But the leaders of the first third, and they were in fact leaders, convinced the middle third and even some of the opposition third that the time had come to end the tyranny. And, sir, these leaders of freedom pledged all to that cause — their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.

And many of these leaders died for their pledge, but through their deaths whiffed life into the greatest cause of all time — individual freedom.

Then, less than a century later, in 1836, about 200 freedom loving men stood against 6,000 soldiers who, on behalf of their tyrannical leader, certainly would kill them. And they did. It was a place you may have heard of, a simple Spanish Mission, called the Alamo.

And as to the stand at the Alamo and Texas independence… historians also agree that only about a third of the Texas populace supported the stand, a third wanted to just get along with Mexico, and again there was that spineless third in the middle.

We, sir, are not at the point yet where lives need to be put at risk for freedom. No, this is but the start of the negotiations, when those who would take our freedom from us should listen. Our country’s forefathers tried that over and over, as did the Texans. In the end, when ears were shut, when arrogance prevailed over judgment, that was when things had to get rough.

Freedom… is never free.

Yakko77 on April 18, 2009 at 7:03 PM

Oh please. The Founding Fathers sacrificed a helluva lot of “family time” to remove the yoke of tyranny… and you can’t sacrifice a day?

atheling on April 18, 2009 at 7:46 PM

No, I am not AP.

getalife on April 18, 2009 at 7:47 PM

We, sir, are not at the point yet where lives need to be put at risk for freedom. No, this is but the start of the negotiations, when those who would take our freedom from us should listen. Our country’s forefathers tried that over and over, as did the Texans. In the end, when ears were shut, when arrogance prevailed over judgment, that was when things had to get rough.

Freedom… is never free.

TXUS on April 18, 2009 at 7:37 PM

+1…yet!

jwp1964 on April 18, 2009 at 7:47 PM

So I take it you’ve heard a FH describe herself, proudly as a FG… This is MegMac to a T.

Upstater85 on April 18, 2009 at 7:42 PM

No. What is an FG?

csdeven on April 18, 2009 at 7:48 PM

This needs to happen sooner than later…on the internet there are two dates popping out–July 4th and September 12, 2009…I share doubts with others about the 4th because it’s a major holiday, too many people will be traveling, reveling, and most importantly–the congress critters will be out of town as well as most of Washington…it should be done on a regular business day with Congress in full session for maximum effect…there also appears to be a large-scale pro-legalizing marijuana march to be held on the 4th as well–they say they’ve secured permits….

RepubChica on April 18, 2009 at 7:48 PM

I am not sure it was a mistake. The bonuses themselves got a heck of a lot more media then the assurance of those bonuses being paid was written into the bill at the behest of the White House. They probably consider it another score for them thanks to the help of the very compliant media.

Cindy Munford on April 18, 2009 at 7:37 PM

It was definitely a situation that lends itself to thoughts of “backroom conspiracies”. The WH could have allowed the bonuses to be put in, only to alert the House Dems that they were going to get an issue to demagogue on.

If that was the plan, though, the WH sorta ended up shooting themselves in the foot because after that, some big hedge fund managers came out and said they wouldn’t participate in the TALF program, which is crucial to getting lending up and running again (not that I think lending should be up and running, people need to pay down their debts). Again, creating a crisis of confidence where there is already a financial crisis is just insane.

venividivici on April 18, 2009 at 7:51 PM

What is it with liberals that whenever they want to compare and contrast the number of any group of citizens that they disagree with, they use the entire population of the country as theirside.

Cindy Munford on April 18, 2009 at 7:46 PM

Eh, I wouldn’t say liberals are alone in this tactic.

Upstater85 on April 18, 2009 at 7:51 PM

I think 9/11 would be a good day. Patriots day! Plus the 12th is a Saturday. We might get a better turnout but a lot of the congress critters will be home.

conservnut on April 18, 2009 at 7:52 PM

I still think getaclue is AP in liberal drag.

conservnut on April 18, 2009 at 7:31 PM

I floated a similar (albeit less drag) theory a while ago: the only reason this troll was still around was that AP is really getaclue, stirring up debate to increase page views. There’s no other reason they should still be here.

Hey getalife, I was wondering where you were.

Do you have your responses finished?

Turtler on April 18, 2009 at 7:54 PM

If you’re counting that 300,000 out of the 300 million Americans – which makes sense since a lot of people brought their kids – it’s actually .1%.

….

PJTV has it well over 600,000.

And yes, you have to consider it was a work day and weather was bad in many places.

artist on April 18, 2009 at 7:40 PM

And hopefully that wasn’t the end of the movement but only the beginning!

csdeven on April 18, 2009 at 7:48 PM

Sorry, missed a key stroke (one to the right). I meant FH = faghag… Here are the common symptoms:

1) May not be “HOT”. In particular, she doesn’t believe she is very attractive.

2) Doesn’t have the confidence to approach her dream guy

3) Therefore, she devotes her time and energy to Gay Beta Males that will do nothing but keep her confidence low – all the while telling her how much they love her (while using her)

4) She becomes an activist for Teh Gays that love Teh Gay lifestyle…

5) Very emotional…

Yeah, it’s starting to match up with MegMac…

It’s a great day but too late. We can stop the budget if we act fast and furious enough. But September too many deals will be struck! The Congress needs to fear reelection before they make the deals selling our futures down the river.

So what? They’re going to do something like that, no matter what. The left are nothing but despicable, lying scum. We cannot worry that they are going to be telling despicable lies. That’s all they do.

Hard to believe that Wall Street, especially the ones who’s financial problems are strictly based on the downturn and not corruption, would stand by silently.

I agree with the sentiment regarding the scum, but still feel it would be a tactical mistake in that it would be too late to stop the FY10 appropriations bill.

I fully agree.

I just wouldn’t worry about the left using any symbolism against us. They’re going to try to do that no matter what we do.

progressoverpeace on April 18, 2009 at 8:08 PM

July 4th sounds like a good day but there will already be tons of tourists and no Congress. It will also probably be miserably hot. I can’t think of a better day but logistically it will be problematic.

We could take it to Martha’s Vineyard…

And as I’ve said before, if you want coverage, just go down to Crawford

Upstater85 on April 18, 2009 at 8:17 PM

Wanting to get their filthy, greedy hands on programs that help people you call ponzi schemes.

How many Social Security recipients, had they been allowed to keep the thousands upon thousands of dollars involuntarily taken from them, would have built up enough of a nest egg to not NEED Social Security?

It’s a program designed by politicians to buy off votes (as are most government entitlements), and to keep them so dependent on it that the “beneficiaries” have no choice but to keep those who send the checks in power.

TheMightyMonarch on April 18, 2009 at 8:19 PM

Thought I’d share this one:

I’m about as cynical and jaded as AP, but I thought this was pretty rousing stuff :)

If you think DC is hot in July, Crawford would be a furnace.

I was an infant when Reagan was around, so I’d love to experience my first great president…

Upstater85 on April 18, 2009 at 7:31 PM

I wish you luck with that but I wouldn’t hold my breath. I was an infant when Truman was around and I have seen exactly one I’d consider great. Reagan. I will consider myself lucky if I can only see one more that I can consider good before I depart this world. Sadly, other than Reagan, they all range from adequate to our present dangerous buffoon.

Oldnuke on April 18, 2009 at 8:30 PM

Allah,

This is not a simple policy disagreement. Have you been paying attention?

What is taking place is a fundamental restructuring of this country, including a movement away from our Constitution. For all the whining and crying the left did about Bush, he was child’s play compared to what is going on now.

Open your eyes and ears.

eaglesdontflock on April 18, 2009 at 8:33 PM

dangerous buffoon.

Do the math people, there were 20,000 people in Atlanta or more? 15,000 in San Antonio? There were 2000 to 3000 people here in Ventura CA, probably an average attendance. Most reports I have seen state there were over 800 tea parties, if there was an AVERAGE of 2000 people per tea party that would make total attendance 1.6 MILLION.

Oldnuke on April 18, 2009 at 8:39 PM

I wasn’t born to walk on water
I wasn’t born to sack and slaughter
But on my soul, I wasn’t born
To stoop and knuckle under
A man can learn to steal some thunder
A man can learn to work some wonder
And when the gauntlet’s down,
It’s time to rise and climb the sky
And soon the moon will smolder
And the winds will drive
Yes, a man grows older but his soul remains alive
All those tremulous stars still glitter
And I will survive!
Let my heart grow colder and as bitter as a falcon in the dive

There was a dream, a dying ember
There was a dream, I don’t remember
But I will resurrect that dream
Though rivers stream and hills grow steeper
For here in hell where life gets cheaper
Oh, here in hell the blood runs deeper
And when the final duel is near
I’ll lift my spear and fly
Piercing into the sky and higher
And the strong will thrive
Yes, the weak will cower while the fittest will survive
If we wait for the darkest hour
Till we spring alive
Then with claws of fire, we devour like a falcon in the dive
