“Thomas Paine”: It’s time for a million-person march on Washington
posted at 4:50 pm on April 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
Glenn Beck was pushing this idea weeks ago but it’s more plausible now given the success of the tea parties, about which “Paine” is properly excited. A friend who was at an event where he spoke e-mailed me this week to scold me for sniping at him, promising that I’d like him if I just gave him a chance. I do like the idea of fiscal cons flexing their voting muscle with protests; that’s why I support the parties. What I don’t like is this guy’s habit of lapsing into rhetoric about a second revolution, legislators ignoring the people “at your peril,” and, per the letter from a Marine that he reads near the end here, the idea that “our country is under attack from an enemy within” — which isn’t the first time he’s used language about enemies and attacks to describe policy disagreements. I get that the character he’s playing obliges him to use a certain amount of revolutionary parlance, just like I get that I’ll take plenty of heat in the comments for being a squish who’s afraid to fight nutroots fire with fire, etc, but what can I tell you. That sort of rhetoric leaves me cold, and I can’t be the only one. And yes, yes, I know, I’m a RINO whom the party’s better off without anyway. No need to remind me.
One interesting detail: Note his salute to protesters past who marched in the name of green power and ending wars to save lives. He really is aiming this message at both sides of the aisle.

I, for one, admit I don’t really care what this guy has to say. I just wanted to read your intro to it :)
That’s cool. I thought you were questioning the whole point of them in the first place.

Imagine a million people on the mall yelling “Boo” at Congress and a million in Lafayette Park yelling “Boo” at the Chavez Culture Center, oh, ah, I mean the
White House.

Oh yeah, the guy who said “they” attacked Pearl Harbor, “they” brought down the twin towers, and “they” created big deficits. I noticed few bothered when AP highlighted that absurd jump before.
okonkolo on April 18, 2009 at 4:59 PM
You’re not the only one. It’s what gives the lefties an excuse (as if they needed one) to portray anyone with a conservative lean as a whacko.
The “revolution” can take place at the voting booths, thank you very much.
flipflop on April 18, 2009 at 4:59 PM
I disagree. If you want to win over moderate voters who voted for Obama, call him “the enemy within” and stuff. That’s the way to go to convince them to vote for the GOP in 2012.
Also, dressing up like an old-tymey person and pretending you’re Thomas Paine is pretty good.
Right now, I’m wearing a full Pistons uniform and people are like, “Hey Rasheed! Shouldn’t you be gettin beat by the Cavs right now?” And I’m like, “No no. I’m Proud RINO, I’m just here hanging out with David Frum and George Will, not wearing jeans.” But I mean, people take me seriously because I’m dressed up like somebody else.
Proud Rino on April 18, 2009 at 5:02 PM
That was a bad string of connections to use, no doubt.

One of the Red State guys is not pumped about the tea parties.
I would definitely drag my family to DC for protest march.
Dan’s Bake Sale was loads of fun too. In the absence of leadership, it is going to take the grassroots to raise awareness and throw the bums out.

Even if this guy’s stuff goes viral, it is still a large number of people who don’t haven’t a clue who he is. I don’t think I would worry about his impact, especially since he appears to be promoting free speech.

Print this graph, laminate it, and carry it in your wallet. Whenever some lefty nutjob says the Tea Parties were all about partisanship, whip it out (heh) and say, “No, this is what it’s all about. How can you be in favor of these deficits?”

All the rest of it aside–we could use a million person march in DC just to scare the pants off the demogogues on the Hill. And it would—Nancy and Harry would have to run for cover, though Nancy may not be able to figure that out.

These tea parties concern me. They seem to bring out the wackos….These politicians don’t give a damn about tea party protesters…The best way to bring change is to vote..not walk around with silly hats and signs.
therightwinger on April 18, 2009 at 5:14 PM
Hmmmmm my two cents:
I think the Bill of Rights was designed as a foil to the natural impulse of central government(s) to become large and eventually tyrannical. The 2nd Amendment is more than the right to bear arms for self defense from criminals or to hunt game it is also there to keep Government honest.
If all the constitutional and electoral safety valves fail due to corruption, fraud, or the government begins to dictate or becomes unresponsive thereby disenfranchising the majority of the electorate then its no longer democracy is it? The 2nd amendment is the final safety valve.
Some may quail at the thought of violence but it is and remains the final safety valve and the founders thought it important enough to enshrine second only to the right of free speech which is supposedly the true guarantor of democracy.
I think the focus of the argument should be have we become so disenfranchised by the government, the media, and the system that democracy has failed and if so what do we do about it?
elduende on April 18, 2009 at 5:15 PM
You’re still assuming the voting booths are a functioning part of our democracy … they aren’t any longer.
Obama has turned off … enforcement of immigration laws – they’re trying to get as many illegals over the border to vote for Obama as they possibly can. That’s why he’s pushing (and will get) amnesty for these 30 million plus illegal aliens. And even if he doesn’t – he has ACORN out there with their voter fraud. And there are the ACORN satellites and splinter groups that can get illegals into voting booths in places where there’s no ID check … all these groups need is some money to fund their work – hopefully Obama won’t give them any. Oh wait … he already gave them millions in the porkulous.
Additionally – who is it that is always against picture ID at voting booths? Why – that would be the Democrats and Obama!
And … hmm … who’s just announced that they’ll take personal charge of the upcoming Census? Hmmm … well that would be the White House! Silly me … all these coincidences … can’t possibly mean that the voting booth isn’t contaminated now can they?

Acorn showed in the last election that the votes of honest citizens don’t count. If it means we need a real revolution to effect the changes we need, then so be it.
Voting won’t effect anything when the game is rigged.

Cindy Munford on April 18, 2009 at 5:19 PM
As a lifelong Reagan-voting Christian conservative, they concern me too!
This belief is disproved by their appearances.
The best way to encourage others to vote is to demonstrate an interest in the national goings-on. More of the same (just voting) leads to more of the same.
Spirit of 1776 on April 18, 2009 at 5:19 PM
So why did the polls accurately reflect the vote tally? Did ACORN fix all the polls too?
Proud Rino on April 18, 2009 at 5:19 PM
He’s almost acting like the tea parties were his idea…people just took him up on the challenge. I really don’t think he’s much of a factor one way or the other.
Be interesting to know a little more about him and his background though…I detect something about him that makes uncomfortable.
AUINSC on April 18, 2009 at 5:20 PM
And what is the magic number ACORN must achieve to make our votes irrelevant?
Cindy Munford on April 18, 2009 at 5:20 PM
I’m not going to say there aren’t problems and that elections aren’t being tilted. And all the things you mentioned about immigration and voter ID issues are correct. I’ve posted a few times on my own puny blog about the voter ID thing…it’s one of my pet peeves.
So…what’s the alternative to keeping things like the Tea Parties and other public demonstrations of discontent going to reverse the trend in the next election? Are we really talking armed insurrection here? Good grief…

Leftists don’t need an excuse to disagree with the Right; so who give two sh!ts what they think. Do your thing, follow your beliefs regardless of how the Left will perceive you.
As for the “revolution” at the voting booth, get real. The elections will always be won in the middle, that huge group of voters that are neither diehard right or left. And the past few years, the Left has done a much better job at putting its agenda out into the spotlight where the Middle can see it. You have to fight fire with fire, stop being a squish.
LastRick on April 18, 2009 at 5:24 PM
It is our duty to use whatever means necessary to restore the Constitution … or our rights when they are usurped.
Now for those who think this is “nutroots” talk – I ask the following questions …
1. Do you agree that when a Federal Government becomes repressive and violates the Constitution that citizens have an obligation to fight it?
2. How much farther do we need to go here with Obama before that point is reached.
My answer is YES to number 1.
For number 2 – I don’t think we’ve hit the tipping point just yet … or maybe we have. I just don’t know. I’d like to see some Supreme Court rulings on the government takeovers of the auto industry and the banks. I’d like to see some rulings from them on whether or not the government has the right to refuse repayment of tarp – as they are doing. I’d like to see some rulings on the EPA declaring C02 a toxin … wtf? I’d like to see some rulings about the Feds forcing unfunded mandates on to the states via the Porkulous.
In short – I’d like to see the THIRD BRANCH get engaged here before I personally give up on the Union here. What is taking them so long?
HondaV65 on April 18, 2009 at 5:24 PM
Time to choose. I sure didn’t see any silly hats at the one I attended. There were no crazies. I tell you what I did see.
I saw men and women who work hard and play by the rules. I saw men and women who know that ACORN created god knows how many votes of the dead and illegal. I saw men and women who are well educated to the fact that when you increase spending by more that 25% and increase the debt load by 3X, this is not a winning strategy for individuals, communities, or a nation. If this was a good strategy, I suggest each of you try it on an individual basis. By all means, lead the way!
I know that there is a massive misunderstanding of what the people at the Tea Parties are upset about. You can see that in this thread. Keep laughing and mocking and denying. Like I stated, it’s time for choosing.

The tea parties were not just about fiscal conservativism. They were about far, far more. They were more about Constitutionalism than about fiscal conservativism.

I think “Mr. Payne’s” comment about representatives ignoring the people at their peril is as harmless as saying pay attention or get voted out.
I would make an effort to march on Washington as part of the million. I keep hearing how the TEA parties were civil affairs. (I had to work) I think tailgating with a million like-minded American’s and some brats, while asking, no demanding, that Washington pay attention is a great recipe for fun activism!

If you want to prevent ARMED revolution – the best way is to put some kind of “check” on the Democrats now. And right now – the best … PEACEFUL … method of doing that is to join this dude’s million man march on Washington. A march might prevent you from having to dust off the fire pole in the closet.
And after that – we need to get to the ballot boxes next election …
And along with that … we need to OPPOSE amnesty for illegals and DOCUMENT AND PROSECUTE EVERY INSTANCE OF VOTING FRAUD.

This nails it. We don’t change anything by just “going to the polls”. That doesn’t change the mind of the voter beside you who mindlessly pulls R or D every year without thinking why. It takes an extra step (or three). The TEA Party movement is a nice start.

Marching for “green power”? What does he think we are…liberal gay-boy democrats??
The Wall on April 18, 2009 at 5:37 PM
Every political gathering will have a few nuts; what I like about the Tea Parties is that people are beginning to realize that they don’t have to accept the status quo — i.e. a biennial choice between two brands of tax-and-spend pols.
The problem, especially at the Federal Gov’t. level, is that once these people get into office, it’s all about their own incumbency. Their main focus is buying off one constituency group or another with taxpayer dollars to retain power. The Dems are absolutely shameless about it (especially the current crop), but the Republicans are only marginally better.
Many people have come to see the charade for what it is. The Tea Parties let them know they’re not alone in their disgust, and that they do have the power to remind politicians who they work for.
If a guy in a silly costume helps that realization along, that’s fine with me.
cruadin on April 18, 2009 at 5:38 PM
I had no idea the tea parties were for green power like windmills and stuff. I know the original Thomas Paine was all over the idea of windmills and tapping the power of the ocean tide for power. Well, now we know what 1776 was about after all….solar panels.

The silent majority no more? I don’t think we are yet the majority. However, a large portion of our population has not yet felt the effects of the administrations policies. In the next 4 years the economic pain is going to become extreme. People of all demographics are going to feel it. Two months ago my spouse was saying how he kept hearing all this bad news on the economy but all around him he saw buisness as usual. Where is the economic downturn? He thought it was just Obama hyping it for political advantage, and of course there was that too. Well last month he started to see. He lost his job. We are hurting. Whereas two months ago our lives were humming along as usual. Oh, and that $400 credit, we don’t qualify, not that we wanted it. Just saying. When life turns gray for the average citizen they will turn back to the basics. Faith, family, and traditional values. When that happens it will be a game changer. It happened in the 70′s which led to Reagan and it will happen again. Socialism doesn’t work. But from time to time Americans get too comfortable and complacent and forget what it is like to struggle and must be reminded what Reagan said. Freedom is not passed through the bloodstream from one generation to the next. It must be fought for a protected or in our sunset years we will be telling stories of the America that used to be where men were once free.

Cindy Munford on April 18, 2009 at 5:42 PM
To be more specific, it is not so much the idiotic spending they are doing that is killing us, but the fact that they have refused to address the financial crisis, holding it hostage, in order to force their social engineering programs through. That is far more than just the spending, but the way they are threatening the rest of our economy, and our monetary system, in order to force their spending (and future obligations) down our throats.
In the end it won’t matter, because this system will not be able to withstand the strain.
progressoverpeace on April 18, 2009 at 5:43 PM
It may be typical liberalism to instigate a 10-12 trillion deficit, I don’t know would Hillary done that? Maybe, but I don’t agree with that.
We can’t allow Congress to just pass a bill of a TRILLION dollars without even taking time to read it! They didn’t even allow Republicans to read it–let alone challange it. The first TARP was bad but at least it did get some debate and some convincing was done– you know the way democracy is suposed to work?
Creating a crisis with the intention of slipping this by the American people–a Trillion dollars–and no one complains? Please.
We need to do something and we don’t have enough representation in government to make a dent. We need to march.
Although personally–that would mean quite a long trip and my 90 year old mother who was just put in a nursing home is also a long drive… so I don’t’ know how my family can go to Washington DC instead of Washington State.
Are there enough conservatives in surrounding states to get to 1,000,000?

These so-called righties posting(I question if they are genuine, one, at least, we know to be a fake))seem to have lost sight of the fact that to get people to vote your way you need publicity–of all persuasions and sorts. The tea party I attended was orderly, the signs relevant and the people quite ‘normal’. I would certainly attend a million person march–I’d even attend a 500,000 person march. LOL As for the other mechanics involved in getting out the vote, I intend to put my stimulus money to good use getting GOPers ‘hired’ via the ballot box and any other means I might deem useful.

Excellent. Somehow this whole thing got painted as purely anti-tax or anti-spend, when the inspiration for it was incorrect spending and unfair taxation. It was anti-bailout, for its starting point.
We had a guy (in Philly) who went on a bit about the Fed. That was fine with me, since Philly has a Fed it seemed especially relevant. The guy was pretty decent in his speech.

Now though, I see all my hard work go to support the non-productive and unlawful scum like ACORN. That is not ok. The deficit at the end of Bush’s term was around 450 Billion Dollars. An insane sum, no? Washingtons own assessment for the end of 2009 is 1.85 Trillion. We can NEVER pay that debt off. I mean EVER. Exactly – as long as the Tea Parties accomplish something (and I think they are) … then there is no need to resort to secession and other forceful means to assert our Constitutional rights.
What I absolutely don’t understand – is people like Allah – who sneer at the Tea Parties, laugh at the secessionists, and poo-poo the revolutionaries.
Not trying to slam Allah here – I know he’s a great guy – but what exactly does he stand for? What’s his solution to getting this nation back on track? Or does he believe it’s on track?
In short – what do the “Allahs” want?

At this point, the MSM is trying to ignore the rumblings of discontent, not unlike the early days of the civil rights movement. Would not a million or two protesters make this jut a tad more difficult to ignore?
At some point, we will need to get off our collective a$$es and let the DC elites from both parties know their narcisistic ways will no longer be tolerated.
Elections do have consequences but our reps in Washington need to be sent a very clear message. “We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it any more!” Change your ways or you will be voted out of office.

and to think how these past few years it’s been, “you “fiscal cons”…” and the like.
glad to see that the grassroots’ first instinct has been to focus on property rights and free enterprise.
watching my back, though.

I think it changes from day to day.

You are missing the point if you watched the rest of the world protest.
They screwed up huge, gambled huge and lost huge. Trillions lost worldwide.
Yet, the ones that screwed up are not paying the price and going back to business as usual thanks to your money bailing them out.
The ones paying the price are the ones that lost their jobs, their savings, their houses, thanks to the greedy ones that gambled huge and lost.

I have to say the old geezer is making sense. Too bad we haven’t got a non-costumed leader saying this stuff.

That’s an easy one. Site traffic!

Yup. Coming from someone who has sat and watched manual recounts, you have no idea who is voting dead, early and often. This last election clearly showed that the basically good system has been compromised by fraud.
Not that it will stop me from voting, but I also know voting will not necessarily ‘cut it’ in this war.

Tax cuts of any kind effect everyone, my darling.
If you don’t think any additional taxes on businesses don’t trickle down to consumers, you’re deluding yourself.
If you don’t think additional taxes on the rich don’t affect their investment habits, or if you don’t think it causes high earners to shelter their income (resulting in even less revenue to the fed), you’re lying to yourself.
If you don’t think accelerated government spending has no effect on inflation (the hidden tax that everyone pays), you’re blind.
No one’s ever gotten a job from a poor person. Enough with the class warfare nonsense.

It feels like that is what is happening.

ALLAH, when did you become a RINO? Differences is what make us strong … Politicians always say they are fighting for you. Wasn’t it just the hopey changey revolution?
tarpon on April 18, 2009 at 5:58 PM
This administration told us that his stimulus would help the average American. The the trolls own admission, you can’t point to one needy American being stiulated. What you got is politcal friends of TOTUS and big biz scumbags being enriched. How is that change?
It is just like the $4oo.oo dollar tax bs. He didn’t change the tax bracket, only the witholding. You have to show that as income and do what?,,, That’s right, you will have to pay taxes on it. It is just another shell game to pacify morons.
I wish that CNN reporter had asked me about the 400 dollars, I would have asked her; so you would whore out your honor for only 400. Nice.

I agree with you. But I think you misunderstood. I am not whining, merely giving an example of how circumstances can change and possibly wake people up to the problems that are being created by this administration. We are hurting, but not asking for anything, to us it is unthinkable to ask for government help or any other help. We will fix our own problems. We always have and always will. My point was simply sometimes our society starts to take for granted the things we have and some begin to believe the continuation of their lifestyle is owed to them. Well it isn’t. If you fall down you pick yourself back up. No one owes you anything. If people just applied the formula this administration is using to their own households they would see the sand this whole scheme of Obama’s is being built on. As for the tea parties, I am all in favor and should their be a million person march on Washington I would be proud to attend funny hat and all.

That is the mindset of a failed ideology.
Wake up and look what happened to the economy stupid.

“rumblings of discontent” Yes, these need to become an avalanche, something that cannot be ignored by the spenders on the Hill. If it takes little grandstanding, purposeful organizing and determination–so be it. Let’s get ‘er done.

Yep, sorry I tied my rant to my initial comment about your situation. I know you were not asking for anyting. I’m sorry if it came across like that. I understood where you were coming from and in my clumsy way I was trying to empathize. You know how us right wing nutjobs struggle with that!

Revolution would be ruinous; it would almost certainly destroy prematurely much of the good that remains in the United States. It would be as if one were to dismember a sick man in order to put him back together right. Revolution and every action short of it seems so futile, I keep returning to an opinion that the best course may be to write autopsies even while the host is still alive. For who will have leisure to think and write after the host is dead? And one must think of ways to ensure the autopsies survive the death of the host. For one’s successors must have a new host.
