The apology tour continues in Latin America
posted at 8:55 am on April 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The following passage from Barack Obama’s speech to Latin American leaders will be one of those Rorshach tests for political perspective. Those who hated the Bush administration enough will applaud it; those who think America is usually wrong will cheer; and the rest of us will shake our heads:
I know that promises of partnership have gone unfulfilled in the past, and that trust has to be earned over time.
While the United States has done much to promote peace and prosperity in the hemisphere, we have at times been disengaged, and at times we sought to dictate our terms. But I pledge to you that we seek an equal partnership. (Applause.)
There is no senior partner and junior partner in our relations; there is simply engagement based on mutual respect and common interests and shared values. So I’m here to launch a new chapter of engagement that will be sustained throughout my administration.
Obama’s apologizing for being dictatorial … to Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales, and the Castros. As for “dictat[ing] our terms,” we used to call that defending American interests. When negotiating, people try to get the best terms for themselves. We didn’t send gunboats to Venezuela or Bolivia during the Bush administration, and the only people seizing assets over the last eight years have been the Venezuelans under Chavez.
Once again, we have the new President embarking on the “We Suck ’09″ tour, kicked off in Europe, where he felt the need to apologize for the last administration’s efforts to defend America’s interests on the international stage. Obama likes to call this “smart power” and tells us we’ll get more by appearing humble than by pursuing our interests in the normal fashion. So far, the rest of the world has applauded Obama’s performance — and gone on to reject our requests for economic cooperation, combat troops for Afghanistan, partnership with Russia against Iran, and North Korean continuation of the six-party nuclear disarmament talks without launching long-range missiles over Japan.
Buy the T-shirt for the tour, folks, but don’t be too unhappy if they run out. It looks like we’ll have a “We Suck” tour in 2010, 2011, and 2012, too.

there is simply engagement based on mutual respect and common interests and shared values.
Name them Barry. Post up Hugo’s mutual respect quotes. Post up where Hugo’s interest is our interest. Post up a single shared value the American people have with Chavez.
You, Barry, are quickly becoming Jimmy Carter’s weaker brother and the world is paying close attention.

While Barack Obama has spent the better part of his “Presidency” apologizing for America’s arrogance and making new communist and socialist friends daily, he now has told Israel they are on their own. One has to wonder how the U.S. Jewish community now feels about voting for a man who has turned his back on Israel’s sovereignty. All this while Obama and his far-left liberal democrats continue to put this nation in permanent financial debt. Who would have thought a peanut farmer could be out-done by a community organizer when it comes to destroying a once proud and powerful nation under the guise of hope and change.

This guy has been president for eighty eight days now. How many of those days has he actually spent in Washington DC? During these troubling economic times that he talks about, shouldn’t he be setting an example of frugality? I wonder how he compares to other presidents in the amount of time spent away from the White House. Of course as long as he’s away, he can’t prove what an ineffectual leader he is.
Tommy_G on April 18, 2009 at 9:10 AM
Has a dictatorial foreign leader ever apologized for their country’s actions? I don’t think so. Putting the US in a position of weakness by its own leader will almost certainly lead to disaster.
sherry on April 18, 2009 at 9:10 AM
Another O-pology?! At what point in this man’s presidency will he stop O-pologizing for the USA? Mr. Obama’s disdain for this country will preclude him from running for re-election. My guess is that rather than seek four more years as President, he will assume a role as a “World Statesman” in 2013 where he can bash America but assume no responsibility for running it or protecting it while basking in the glory of anti-American world acclaim.

Well guess what, Mr. President…I’m not ashamed of my country at all and I’m proud of all the steps we’ve taken to make the world a safer place and if you truly believed in our greatness you’d be telling everyone you see instead of leaving droppings of negativity everywhere you go. Bush never did that, ever, that I recall. If you want to go become friends with lowlife dictators and violators of human rights, go do it on your own and leave us Americans out of your dirty deals. Fool.
scalleywag on April 18, 2009 at 10:14 AM
Are you kidding me????
I’ve argued here many times for a change in the way we approach bilateral relations with my nations. I’ve advocated softening up to regimes like Cuba who at the end of the day amount to exactly squat in the modern global order.
But Obama’s lost it here. These ‘non-aligned’ nations were always understood to be the pawns with which great powers played great games. The idea of a ‘senior partner’ and ‘junior partner’ is integral to the way we view relations with countries that aren’t great powers. We always understood that at the end of the day with a country like Peru or Venezuela we need nothing from them. Now its all about leveling the playing field?!?!
What is this guy doing?!?!?

Dear Ed, what you consider an apology tour, is Obama telling the truth, something that the previous president had a hard time with.I guess being a conservative today means always bragging up the USA, even when we make bonehead mistakes. I guess being a patriot means never admitting our country makes mistakes. Funny how the founding fathers said dissent is the greatest form of patriotism. So you “conservatives” can wrap yourselves up in the American flag, stick your heads in the sand, and then let people who live in the real world run the country. Something the American people figured out in the last 2 election cycles.

As an old hippie friend of my dad said, “Obama is our last great hope to see the country have a communist utopia in my lifetime and if he doesn’t get elected the dream will never become a reality.” It was inevitable that BO would get in because we have had 40 years of brain washing of our kids to make it a reality. I never really understood why companies started to demand degrees even for lower end jobs but now I understand. The best short term way for companies here to make lots of money is with nationalization. The best way to nationalize is to go the communist/socialist route and the best way to get there is though the brainwashing of the younger voters is via collage. The CEOs and investors are laughing all the way to their off shore banks because the feds are dumping far more money into the failed companies then they are worth or would ever make.

JeffinOrlando on April 18, 2009 at 11:02 AM
I’m starting to doubt that is ever will be. The more he denigrates America, the higher his popularity seems to be. For his supporters to admit they were wrong about him would say more about themselves than it would him. I don’t think they are willing to be that honest with themselves.
No one should be surprised by his behavior, all the signs were there before the election. The Kool-aid drinkers simply refused to see it and those who did were called racists. They are deep in denial. He’s done a few things lately that should enrage the leftys, such as refusing to prosectue CIA waterboarders, however over on Democratic Underground they aren’t even mentioning it. They are still talking about how terrible Bush is, how cute the puppy is, and what a glamazon Michelle is. Deeeeep denial.
ExcessivelyDiverted on April 18, 2009 at 11:02 AM
That is common and stunning when you think about it.
In the history of human civilization, when has there ever been a untopia?
The brainwashed hinge it on a particular leader to bring about the… right …kind of social scruture.
It’s been done many times and proved fatal in every way but everytime it’s blamed on the the fact that it wasn’t implimented in just the right way. Or that it wasn’t extreme enought to make it successful.
The arrogance of believeing that man can create heaven on earth is the true definition of insanity.
doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
When God is removed from humanity. Humanity tries to recreate him in some form or another. Why else would they want to create something heaven like… if there was no God.
It’s denial in the highest and most dangerous form. It’s insanity.

I knew Obama would be bad, but it’s way worse than I thought it would be. This is infuriating.
JohnInCA on April 18, 2009 at 11:10 AM
What Obama and his team will find out about two years from now is that saying the U.S. sucks to people like Hugo Chavez or Daniel Ortega in 2009 isn’t going to be enough — they’re going to have to still be saying it in 2011 and 2012 to make those people happy.
Whether they learn from that — or at the very least, get pissed off because Hugo and Daniel refuse to cut The Messiah any slack — is open to question. Jimmy Carter finally figured out Christmas Week of 1979 that he was never going to be BFF with Leonid Breznhev and the Soviets, but his response to the Afghanistan invasion of pulling out of the 1980 Olympics came across more as a petulant temper tantrum by a bamboozled fool than anything of substance, like the later Reagan military build-up.

President Obama wrote an op-ed for the Miami Herald that was also published in Latin America countries along these same lines. Ed, I e-mailed you a copy. This man’s love for “his” country is based on his perceived vision on what he can accomplish. By going on these “apology” tours, he is trying to bring America down to the level of other countries. It is the like his “Share the Wealth” philosophy. In his mind, America is not and does not deserve to be the greatest country on Earth. In this President’s mind, capitalism is evil and national pride is bad.

And for all of Obama’s “We suck” statements, what has he ACCOMPLISHED? Besides kissing everyone else’s ass? He accomplished ZERO on his Euro tour, looks like the same result in the South American tour. Must be all that ‘vast executive experience’ coming to the fore.
