Quote of the day
posted at 9:30 pm on April 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
“There are those who think we can win the White House and Congress back by being ‘more’ conservative. Worse, there are those who think we can win by changing nothing at all about what our party has become. They just want to wait for the other side to be perceived as worse than us. I think we’re seeing a war brewing in the Republican party, but it is not between us and Democrats. It is not between us and liberals. It is between the future and the past. I believe most people are ready to move on to that future…
I am concerned about the environment. I love to wear black. I think government is best when it stays out of people’s lives and business as much as possible. I love punk rock. I believe in a strong national defense. I have a tattoo. I believe government should always be efficient and accountable. I have lots of gay friends. And yes, I am a Republican.”

Much the same could be said about John McCain. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
She’s simply to young and void of life experience to be leading an already wounded party into any kind of success.

You don’t know my relatives.
From aged 10 upwards I actively engaged in political discussions (and arguments) with my group of precocious friends and worked on political campaigns. I learned to not label people just because I disagreed with their politics.
This gal thinks she’s special because she likes black clothes and punk rock. Are you seriously saying that a 24 year old who has been exposed to politics her entire life shouldn’t be well past that stage?

See, that’s the disconnect. I don’t see “idealism” in her. In fact, the push in the Republican party is away from ideals. Now, if what your saying is that a 20 something is “ideal” in the same way as a Red head is “feisty”, in other words a convenient cultural assumption (almost like a mental colloquialism), then yes I’d agree with you, she’s idealistic. But if I were to push her harder and ask her, what is your ideal behind the tattoo and the punk rock? Why is it that you feel as though those are manifestations of what you see wrong with the GOP? And what sustains your belief that having gay friends is the appropriate response in order to “cast off” the image you dislike? In other words I wouldn’t call her ideal, I’d call her politically practical in her vision of the Republican party, while overlaying her beliefs upon that image. That’s not uncommon, mind you, I do the same. But that’s the point. I refuse to approach her worldview as something “fresh” or “different”, and certainly not “correct” and “ideal”.

I’m sincerely sorry that your parents never gave you the idea to think of yourself as special and unique. Must have been a lonely journey. And I don’t buy the 10 year old William F Buckley prodigy either. Good that you were engaged, doesn’t mean your arguments were at some higher level than what a ten year old would make.
Bradky on April 18, 2009 at 10:23 PM
I am okay with her not being a social conservative but I would like her to do something to convince me that she is at least a fiscal conservative. And if she really wanted the party to expand then she would discuss ways that the the factions could come together. On a viral email I got this week was a list of things people would like to say, she reminds me of one of them. “I like you, you remind me of me when I was young and stupid”.
Cindy Munford on April 18, 2009 at 10:23 PM
Further, although all of the “women” that I mentioned are quite different in many ways, the point is still the same. We encourage them to be frivolous and bratty (yes, this includes the first kids)… What should we expect of them?
Upstater85 on April 18, 2009 at 10:23 PM
I can deal with that. We only have to vote as Republicans, we still retain the right to choose the best suited for the job.
This girl can say she is Republican but I look for conservative values first. I really don’t see her heart embracing conservative values – in fact, I dislike black immensely.

Yeah, I agree with you. There’s nothing idealistic about making blanket assumptions about people based on their taste in clothes, music, friends, etc.
She’s throwing a temper tantrum, rebelling against the moneyed, establishment political hangers on that she met through her parents’ circle of friends and supporters. Pretty effin immature for a 24 year old.
Y-not on April 18, 2009 at 10:25 PM
Many people were idealistic in college after reading Ayn Rand… then they grew up and realized life was a bit more complicated than the solutions Rand offered. The nature of being 20 something means there is a certain amount of experimentation in thought and beleifs as they find their true principles.

carbon_footprint on April 18, 2009 at 10:29 PM
In other words, Bradky, her view of the direction the Republican party should take is not inherently more “inclusive” because of the assumption that there is a disconnect between punk rock and Pro Life; and Ms. McCain’s ability to “synthesize” that disconnect isn’t “proof” enough for me to join her worldview, nor does it suggest that it would redound to electoral victories. I’m sorry, others might be impressed, but the whole “rage against the machine” just for the sake of it, has always been lost on me, whether it manifests itself on MTV or in the GOP.

Sarah Palin, I’m sure, is “concerned” about the environment, government is best when stays out of people’s lives, believes in a strong national defense, and government should be efficient and accountable.
But this week, for two full days of co-hosting with Joy Behar, I’m sure when Palin is mentioned little Meghan is going to wriggle her little nose like she smells onions burning. She’s a douche.

Now see, that supports my point. If one were to sit down and read Ayn Rand, then he/she would literally be idealistic, because there are a lot of real ideals in that work. There would be real idealism about the make up of Man. What is Justice. What is Good. But again, I don’t see an overarching “ideal” at work behind her propositions. Nor do I see many loosely joined “ideals” behind her views (disclaimer: I only know of her views from what AP posts for our consumption). Rather, I see slap shot after slap shot of as many seemingly “inconsistent” worldviews as a way to somehow communicate, “look at me. I’m not like those other Republicans”

At the bottom is common sense, hard knocks, understanding versus conception and earned character and confidence through achievement.

Dear Ms. McCain,
The two best professors I had in college were lesbians. Unbelievably smart, intelligent music professors and I am honored to have studied under both of them and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to other students. I never once saw them as gay but as self-made, hard-working human beings.
One of the most honorable men in the country is a black man; a man worthy of being looked up to by all men and women, young and old. And I did just that growing up in my house, listening to Rush Limbaugh and reading the Bible. That man is none other than Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
I too believe that government needs to be smaller, more efficient, less bloated and held to a much higher degree of accountability. I also believe government is best when it is only an existential necessary evil and stays the hell out of peoples’ lives for the most part.
And I am an intellectual conservative. I am not a brainless Republican sell-out like you and your father.
Sincerely,
Jockolantern
Jockolantern on April 18, 2009 at 10:38 PM
She may be sweet to some, but terribly naive.
Core values does not mean bringing your sexual orientation to the table as an value to be considered. It doesn’t matter what your sexual preference is. That’s between you and your partner.
Limited Govmint, less taxes, less regulation, that’s your core values. What you do in your bedroom is your own safe word.
Kini on April 18, 2009 at 10:38 PM
I don’t “hate” her, but I found her comments insulting. She seemed to be saying that Republicans cannot handle dealing with people who dress a certain way, listen to certain music, or associate with certain people. It’s such a ridiculous assertion — one that I might expect of a pre-teen, not of an adult woman. If she really thinks that she’s somehow special because she wears black and likes punk rock, it means she really has not taken the time to meet many Republicans. Perhaps she should do so before dispensing advice to us.
Y-not on April 18, 2009 at 10:38 PM
I think if the GOP wants to reach the early 20ish voters, they need to promote more of a libertarian leaning platform. There are some youths that are socially conservative on issues such as abortion, but they are also much more hands off when it comes to personal issues such as the so called “gay rights.”

From the article: Simply embracing technology isn’t going to fix our problem either. Republicans using Twitter and Facebook isn’t going to miraculously make people think we’re cool again. Breaking free from obsolete positions and providing real solutions that don’t divide our nation further will.
The real problem is that those obsolete positions are based on principles. Give up principles and Republicans become Democrats.

She has guts though but I wish she would realize what a fool she looks to a lot of People. Yes, she is a RINO Republican. She is very pretty and carries herself on the outside very well. The inside is more important and she is far from having that. A very confused young lady that feels she has to dictate what a Conservative is, when in fact she is far from that label.

Rocks on April 18, 2009 at 10:45 PM
But, for better or for worse, she’s not attacking Republicans — but attacking the Republican Stereotype that is both promulgated by the media and — unfortunately — widely accepted as Gospel.
The point of us “younger conservatives” is to fight fire with fire. Would I love for the MSM to all go under? Yes. Will they? No. So what do you do?
Toss the social war PR out the window (tattoos, punk rock, and gays, as Meghan defines it, apparently *eyeroll*), and focus on the economic realities that bind us. If you even knew the amount of so called “Democrats” and “Independents” that are fed up with taxes and spending, but just don’t want to throw “choice” and their “gay friends” under the bus. So they pull the Dem lever.
Neutralize the Democrats at their own game. Use the media. Stop fighting the social wars. That’s all I read from Meghan McCain. I’m a tithing, active, Catholic. I’m also gay. I’ll never leave the Catholic church, nor will I ever attempt to be “married” in one. But my Catholic life and my communion with God does not affect my credit, does not affect my interest rates, does not affect my salary, and does not affect the parking tickets that constantly appear on my car here in Chicago.
My Catholic life and my civic life are separate. It’s not about hating “Republicans” or selling out your personal values. It’s about changing the public relations to focus on things that — yes — Americans will overwhelmingly be Conservative about, if only the party plank weren’t tied to these social battles that the parties, in actuality, are almost identical on.
So I can’t fault Meghan. Nor do I take offense at what she says. She’s attacking the media perception of “Republicans” which — like it or lump it — is accepted in toto by a sizeable portion of the population.

Boggles my mind too. Some things aren’t so simple to see.
Trolls need to eat. Trolls ask for food. Commenters feed the trolls. Trolls live a healthy annoying existence. Trolls survive on this axiom: to eat is to incite. I am now more and more amused at how trolls have profiled specific commenters – it is becoming predictable.
For AP’s selections of controversial nature: WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU HAVE HIM DO? Ed sloshes out plenty of Rah-Rah for one perspective – do we need clones? (BTW: do you really think that certain trolls are single individuals?)
Anyway, if the web traffic goes down to a level that the Boss tells AP and Ed the site needs a tip jar then the site loses all credibility. Credibility is the message we all have this site has room for all walks of life that can hack out a message on their keyboard. (Except for TOU vilators.)

I agree with you on the youth vote, they are also notoriously unreliable when it comes to actually voting. The minority vote, namely hispanics went with Obama and then became concerned he wouldn’t follow through. I know McCain went ballistic when they came back asking for support on immigration. I personally think Obama is going to string them along promising lots and delivering little to keep the vote in the Dem category. Socially I think they trend more towards conservatives, so clearly the immigration piece is the key there.

I’m trying to articulate how I feel, and I tried to write a post on it but I’m having difficulty.
I think Meghan is creating this idea that conservatism is so out of touch with America.
That a “new, progressive” Republican is needed to save the day.
Its so hard to say how I feel, but here’s a try.
Meghan says she is for strong defense, and an efficient and accountable government. We stand for these things. But what else makes her a “progressive” Republican? She doesn’t say anything specific.
She likes the environment. So do we! We are all for less pollution and more efficiency. We just don’t want it done at the barrel of a government gun.
But what else makes her a progressive? Is she for border security? anti gun? pro choice? anti voucher?
I mean the fact is, most conservative issues are things people can agree with us on! IDK f*ck it i cant explain it.
she thinks shes so different than we are, but I dont think she is.

lansing quaker, I would say that the number of those maligned “social conservatives” who vote on only one or two of their pet social issues is small indeed. Meghan McCain and David Frum and others wish to have us think that whenevr the Republicans lose, it is because the party is catering to those socons. That just isn’t the case.
