The Sting, starring Barack Obama
posted at 10:13 am on April 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Do you remember the classic film The Sting? Two men, one an old hand and the other an energetic young face, set up an elaborate con to strip a sap out of his money. Charles Krauthammer looks at Barack Obama’s latest pronouncement of the New Foundation, and sees a remake — starring Obama and Jimmy Carter:
Franklin Roosevelt gave us the New Deal. John Kennedy gave us the New Frontier. In a major domestic policy address at Georgetown University this week, Barack Obama promised — eight times — a “New Foundation.” For those too thick to have noticed this proclamation of a new era in American history, the White House Web site helpfully titled its speech excerpts “A New Foundation.”
As it happens, Obama is not the first to try this slogan. President Jimmy Carter peppered his 1979 State of the Union address with five “New Foundations” (and eight more just naked “foundations”). Like most of Carter’s endeavors, this one failed, perhaps because (as I recall it being said at the time) it sounded like the introduction of a new kind of undergarment.
In fact, Carter used it the same context. He declared, “we are building a new foundation for a peaceful and a prosperous world,” and repeated it three times (not four) during the course of the speech to describe national “strength”, international cooperation, and economic growth. Carter wound up leaving the US mired in economic stagnation, rocked backwards by Soviet aggression, and impotence in the Iranian hostage situation — all of which happened within a year of this speech.
We often asserted that Barack Obama was a Carter retread. We didn’t expect him to make it so obvious by lifting Carter’s speeches and nomenclature. Who wrote Obama’s speech anyway, Joe Biden?
As Krauthammer emphasizes, though, stealing themes is a short con. The long con takes more time but gives much greater rewards. It seems that Obama and Carter have paired up for a four-stage long con … and we’re the saps:
The Whopper: The boast that he had “identified $2 trillion in deficit reductions over the next decade.” It takes audacity to repeat this after it had been so widely exposed as transparently phony. Most of this $2 trillion is conjured up by refraining from spending $180 billion a year for 10 more years of surges in Iraq. Hell, why not make the “deficit reductions” $10 trillion — the extra $8 trillion coming from refraining from repeating the $787 billion stimulus package annually through 2019.
The Puzzler: He further boasted of his frugality by saying that his budget would reduce domestic discretionary spending as a share of GDP to the lowest level ever recorded. Amazing. Squeezing discretionary domestic spending at a time of hugely expanding budgets is merely the baleful residue of out-of-control entitlements and debt service, which will increase astronomically under Obama. To claim these as achievements in fiscal responsibility is testament not to Obama’s frugality but to his brazenness.
The Non Sequitur: “To make sure such a crisis [as we have today] never happens again,” Obama proposes his radical health-care, energy and education reforms, the central pillars of his social democratic agenda. But Obama’s own words contradict this assertion. Notes The Post: “But as his admirable summation of recent history made clear, these pursuits have little to do with the economic crisis, and they are not the key to economic recovery.” Obama rarely fails to repeat this false connection. A crisis — and the public’s resulting pliability to liberal social engineering — is a terrible thing to waste.
The Swindle: The Obama administration is spending money like none other in peacetime history. Obama is smart. He knows this is fiscally unsustainable. He has let it be known privately and publicly that he intends to cure the imbalance with entitlement reform.
Unfortunately, though, Obama’s idea of entitlement reform is to expand entitlements to include everyone. He already proposes a $634 billion down payment on that plan, on top of the 2010 budget that already runs $3.5 trillion, on top of the $700 billion Porkulus, and on top of any additional TARP monies.
Robert Shaw was lucky to escape Paul Newman and Robert Redford in losing just a half-million dollars. This long con will cost us trillions.

OT, but if we’re going to bring up “The Sting” I feel compelled to remind everyone that the theme music, The Entertainer, was not written by Marvin Hamlisch.
The composer was Scott Joplin, a marvelous composer who for some reason never seems to get recognized in our black history events.

Does Redford actually see the parallels here? I doubt it.

Most will never understand. And even if they do, many will believe that the money Obama is taking will benefit them personally.
They fail to look around the cities and states that Democrats control, and see the evidence of liberal policies at work. The DC school voucher cancellation should be enough to mobilize parents in the District. If parents won’t fight for their child’s education, how do we get them to fight against hazy concepts like future debt accumulation?

Obama claims to want to build his foundation on pillars, which is kids of a strange analogy when you think of it.
And he specifically mentioned ’5 Pillars’. That has to have been a coded shout-out to the, um, multiculturals.
Greg Toombs on April 17, 2009 at 10:38 AM
The argument is that the voucher user gets to redirect his tax dollars to the private school and that this will be a drain on the public school (nevermind that the kid is not attending the public school so they don’t need the money for him).
Also, teachers feel that the more serious students will be lured away by the private schools, leaving them with a bunch of students who don’t care about getting an education.
It’s a weak argument but there it is.

Just a thought, Biden told us to Gird our Loins before the election. That this “man” was going to be tested. We all took that to mean that some country was going to attack. I don’t think that was the true meaning of the comment. I think now that it has to do with the way the govt is spending like a drunken sailor, taking over private companies, and cramming socialisim down our throats with nationalized health care.
I understand that socialisim can happen over night, but IMHO wouldn’t someone pushing a country into socialisim do so in a more slow and controled manner. This administration has hit warp speed with this in order to try to overwhelm and confuse the vast majority of Americans into confused submission.
I do not think that we are going to get attacked by some other country, I think the attack is coming from within.
Just my opinion.

To aggravate his evil. Obooba alluded the Sermon on the Mount for his “foundation” analogy, particularly the end of Matthew 7. If you back up a little bit to v. 15, it’s actually more appropriate to what he’s is and what he’s doing:
“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

I think school vouchers are just a threat to teachers bcs most teachers suck. They are mediocre.
As a public school teacher (HS science), vouchers wouldn’t really affect me here bcs we are so small (K-12 ~215 kids).
There’s not many schools to choose from here.
But maybe this would open up parents to hire a country school teacher to teach their kids.
I would love to see that. I think when parents are able to choose where their ed $$ get spent, the competition for their business results in a better product.
Of course you still need some basic standards to go by.

In Sunni Islam, the Five Pillars of Islam is the term given to the five duties incumbent on every Muslim. Shi’a Muslims subscribe to eight ritual practices which substantially overlap with the five Pillars.
I find it interesting that he would use the term of five pilliars in light of his recent travels at the end of his tour of Europe and his actions while there. His use the anology is a bit curious, perhaps another slip up in his relationship with a religion he denies, but honors with a bow to the Saudi king who is the keeper of the two mosques most sacred to muslims.

There was no where to work in the US at that time and it was hard to find a job,, just like now for most folks. This will get worse as companies found ways of doing things with less people and make a higher profit after the taxes that were levied on the businesses to make up for the failed programs.

I taught in a private school and in public schools and I am a union member…my wife taught in a parochial school-so I guess I can give an informed opinion on this. Sorry, can’t provide a pithy explanation.
1. First of all, the teachers that teach in private and public are the same people. One group isn’t cloned out of a special gene pool and the other isn’t made from leftovers. They’re the same teachers.
2. A lot of it has to do with the administration. They set the climate of the school. ‘Bad teachers’ aren’t the real problem…it’s the ‘bad kids’ and the ‘bad parents’…they’re the nosiest and hold the most power.
3. Some unions are stronger than others and it depends upon the state. Paying teachers not to teach? Ridiculous of course, but that’s an extreme. We can be fired with just cause, and the union can’t interfere with that nor should it.
4. Some private schools are great. The one I taught in was mediocre and it was all about the $ with tons of hidden fees. A lot of private schools take those who have been expelled from other schools. Don’t be taken in…”private school” doesn’t mean automatically better than public school. Also, vouchers won’t cover anywhere near all the expenses, especially at a boarding school.
5. There is no accountability with private schools. They can kick a kid out at the drop of a hat…and keep the tuition. Just like in public schools, teachers are pressured to not fail ‘too many’ kids…doesn’t matter if they learned anything or not.
6. Are taxpayers OK with supporting parochial schools through vouchers? Would they be curious as to how public moneys are actually being spent in private schools? Would private schools gladly accept oversight by the state? Would private schools be OK with having to administer standardized tests and receive school grades?…most would not want that scrutiny and oversight.
Private schools are businesses…they market themselves as would any business. Private schools can accept or reject their applicants as they see fit. High-achieving students make them (the ‘good schools’) look good…low achievers are rejected. It’s all marketing and selective admissions.
7. Public schools get a bad rap because of test scores. If all the high achievers are shunted off to magnet schools, or are put into private schools by their parents, then what does that leave you?
Does the military’s special forces accept just anyone, or the best? We in the public schools have no choice…we work with what we have.
Obnoxious parents and lazy, political administrators are the biggest problems. A student can afford a few incompetent teachers. Figuring out who exactly is incompetent is difficult…probably not who you think it is.
Is it:
A. The teacher who keeps everyone happy by handing out A’s and B’s with abandon and doesn’t enforce discipline?
or is it:
B. The teacher who expects students to actually learn and to earn their grades, has high standards and enforces discipline?
Because of public perception/parents it is the A teachers above who are the least in danger of being attacked. Those are the true ‘bad teachers’ and they have been created and encouraged by the system. Has nothing to do with unions, but rather too many Americans wanting things to come easy…success conferred upon rather than earned by the individual. Are you going to complain if your kid gets a high grade…but learns nothing? Heck no.
The B teachers are a pain to administrators, students and parents, and the laziness of the student and the incompetence of the parent can more easily be justified by attacking the B teachers. Their expectations are just too ridiculous, so they must therefore be incompetent.
It is society at large that has damaged American education. Expect more from the teachers, administrators, students and their parents, and quit buying into facade of grades because they are pretty meaningless.
