Geraldo: Impeach Rick Perry for his secessionist chatter!
posted at 4:05 pm on April 17, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via RCP, a communique from the newest addition to NBC’s reality series, “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!” (Yes, really.) Why, he’s so mad he could spit.
I share his contempt for this whining nonsense, premised as it is on Perry’s spite at his side having lost a fair election, but why the urge to purge with impeachment? If this is as grievous a sin as Geraldo says, Texans can simply vote the guy out. He’s surely right about Perry cynically gaming this to fend off a challenge from Kay Bailey Hutchison, but while secession bravado might help in the primary with the 18 percent who support it, he’ll pay in the general when the Democrats start launching attack ads aimed at the other 82.
Anyway, no need to get exercised about it. After all, according to Hillary, Texas is already its own country.

Since when is Geraldo worried about upholding the law? He supports ILLEGAL immigrants. You know, the folks who are kidnapping Arizonans, and threatening to blow up stuff if a local sheriff doesn’t release all of the illegal immigrants he’s holding.
Let’s see. I can support that side, or I can support the side that wants help keeping the foreign drug runners and killers out.
hawksruleva on April 17, 2009 at 4:50 PM
Geraldo is only worried about those illegals coming over the border. He probably thinks if Texas will secede, the border will finally be closed.
Hannity tried telling him last night that he did not call for secession…but geraldo wouldnt shut his mouth.
becki51758 on April 17, 2009 at 4:51 PM
My sentiments exactly. He is starting to redeem himself.
XWing5 on April 17, 2009 at 4:51 PM
Allah, don’t worry about the Dems using this in the general. The Dems aren’t wasting their money backing a viable candidate.
The only way the Dems factor into this race is the extent to which they vote in the Republican primary. It may be enough of a factor that Perry or Hutchison may try to do some things to appeal to Dems.

Ya’ll need to be careful with this state-splitting talk. Texas isn’t the only state that could get more votes out of that. And some of the other states would use that power to shovel money into their bankrupt state treasuries.

Geraldo, Keith Olbermann, Chrissie “Tingles” Matthews, and Susan Roesgen, need to go.
Their fifteen minutes in the spotlight are long over.
And Geraldo? Your comments have probably just raised Rick Perry’s favorable ratings among Texans.
ToddonCapeCod on April 17, 2009 at 4:59 PM
@AP – you still don’t get it. Perry is simply playing the part of Paul Revere in these sound bites, he’s the voice of millions of Texans who are fed up of the expansive Federal Government trying to strip every last vestige of power away from our states. His call isn’t for Texans to rise up and move our state back towards a sovereign nation, he’s warning politicians in Washington (and I’m afraid this goes double for our state senators Hutchinson and Cornyn) that if they continue down this path the people of this nation and especially Texas will not stand for it.
As for that ridiculous poll, and how this “might” hurt Perry in the upcoming election… I wouldn’t worry about it. Perry has the support of more Texans now than before and Hutchinson is only getting support in the polls from Democrats crossing over. Wait until the election and if Perry can start following through with his rhetoric (no more all hat no cattle) you’ll see how much this resonates with the Lone Star State.
smfoushee on April 17, 2009 at 5:00 PM
I’ll put this plainly, Geraldo you’re a douchebag. The End.
SoxNation on April 17, 2009 at 5:01 PM
Governor Perry did not use the word(s) ‘secession’ or ‘secede’: nor did he use these words in his affirmation of the 10th amendment of the U.S. constitution.
The use of the words ‘secession, and ‘secede’ is done by inserting these incendiary words into the discussion by media hacks such as Whore-aldo to set up their straw man argument of treason. And they use this tactic to drive the discussion on their terms, by inserting words not used by the governor of the State of Texas in the first place. This constitutes libel.
Do not let the agitprops in the media drive the discussion with words they invent, to use by inference: Invoking the 10th amendment of the constitution of the United States speaks of authorities manifest in the state(s), so there is NO premise on which to base a discussion on these invented attributions “secession” or “secede”, as though originating from Perry’s statement. No.
Be mindful: lest you wind up carrying the media hacks water for them.
Jenfidel on April 17, 2009 at 5:01 PM
Something no one seems to be hitting on in the MSM is why the talk in the first place?
When a Governor of a fairly substantial state even insinuates this (backed up by his public affirmation of the 10th amend.) seems to me that the question needs to be asked.
People are pissed. Looking at that Texas poll, there is more there to worry about than the outright 18%. Frame some of those questions a bit differently, you’ll probably get bigger numbers.
Another thing to consider: Wanna know how to piss a bunch of Texans off really fast? Stick your “carpetbagging” (I had to throw that word in there) nose into our business and start telling us how to take care of our own. Geraldo needs to read a Texas history book.
Geraldo need to STFU anyway. He has demonstrated his a-hattery time and time again for over 20 years. How does the guy keep getting attention?

What is hilarious is that the Texans which Perry spoke to are the ones who highly regard Concord and Lexington, folks who look kindly on Daniel Boone and Charles Fremont. These people hold Paul Revere and Patrick Henry higher then FDR and JFK. It is the Borg who think we commit treason. Folks who hold the collective higher then the individual.

Gerald Rivers (his REAL name) has been a hack since forever. What I think he is really scared of is people forgetting his name, his ratings tank (again) and having to sell two or three of is million dollar properties.
If Texas were to secede, it won’t be just Texas, but the other Gulf Coast States (except Florida), New Mexico and Arizona. That takes out the Gulf Coast and Mexican Border. All that oil, independent minded citizens and trading ports.

i’m from texas… lived here my whole life, now 34 years.
i wish i could talk to heraldo myself because i would love to tell him that he needs to relax. he’s just overreacting… and quite frankly, so are you – allahpundit… while i’m a fan, this is probably the first time i disagree with you.
if you’re not from here, you don’t know what it’s like. perry was only expressing the pride and the “go-it-your-own” individualism of texas. it’s not treason, it’s the right to free speech. it’s the right to vent frustration and disagreement with your federal government. it’s not treason when the state was an free republic before willingly agreeing to join the union with the legal right to pull the plug, or divide into 6 states for that matter.
the founding fathers also said there should be a revolution every 25 years to scrap the government and create it anew. limiting its ability to attain run-away power. is that treason to? i think that’s all that anybody wants to do here… just to tell washington to leave us be, as emphatically as possible.
but.. secession isn’t going to happen. relax, it’s just lone star pride.
fact is, people have lost faith that other people can take care of themselves. there’s this prevailing idea that someone needs to impose their brand of justice upon whoever they see fit. people have the right to be left alone and like their lives their own way. the government is now taking matters into their own hands and telling us we have to live their way, and like it. oh, and that they can also take and spend as much of our money in any way they see fit.
if a partnership’s not working out, you tend to want to fire the other guy… i understand where he’s coming from.
there’s nothing incendiary here, move along…

Rick’s remarks at the Tea Party, I think, just served as a reminder that we retain the right to secede. He spoke of it “in the moment.” It’s not a secret, we retain this right. I also think it handed him the election that day.

Most of you know that several states have 10th amendment resolutions winding their way through the legislatures. Some have passed both house and senate(including my state of Idaho). If the federal gov. continues to mandate outside of the constitution, then leaving the union is a possibility, but at the moment we are a long way from succession. We have become a nation of two people who only share a common language. How do we solve this? I do not want my grandkids stuck with a debt so great that the only way out would be government ownership of all property. I am no longer in denial, unlike Geraldo and a few others.

If I never have to listen to or see Geraldo again, it’ll be too soon. Such a pathetic individual.
But he does have a point regarding Perry. Perry is now leading, boldly. But once he wins the primary against Kay Bailey will he then moderate again? That is what he’s always done and it angered his Texas constituents and caused them not to trust him. We really need the sort of bold leadership that he displayed. And we see now why no one wants to be a leader! The MSM trys to destroy them. Its going to take someone who’ll have the courage to stand up to that intensity. The way they’re going to accomplish that is by simply ignoring and avoiding it. DD
Darvin Dowdy on April 17, 2009 at 6:03 PM
Nah, I can’t hit the start button on a Geraldo clip, that’s just asking too much. All I can say is this is much ado about nothing, the guy made the point that if Washington didn’t start listening to people and trimming back big government that it was an option. He’s been backpedaling ever since. Blown out of proportion. I’m a displaced Texan though, and if ever there were a state that would revolt to that extreme, that would be the one to do it. And they’d probably survive quite handily, ya’ll. Go away, Geraldo, you’re irrelevant.

Perry’s “spite” is aimed at Obama’s blatant disregard for federalism, his explicit rejection of free markets in favor of federal government manipulations, and his flippancy towards anything vaguely resembling fiscal restraint. scalleywag on April 17, 2009 at 6:39 PM
well, Texas should secede if Obama does any one of these 3 things, which he has promised to do
1. Carbon tax – aka cap&trade – this will cripple Texas, since they export Livestock (mainly cattle) and Oil/gas.
2. Huge taxes – such as stealing money from states like Louisiana and Texas, whom are having surpluses and giving to states like California who spend too much…. so Texas is paying for California state workers sex changes.
3. Amnesty to illegals…. – this would turn Texas from a Red state to a BLUE state over night. As it would to all border states. You’d have Mexican mayors, gov, congress. All democrats –
Hopefully texas has the balls to leave, cause if they don’t the USA wont be around very long anyways… obama will run this country into the ground in a short ammount of time.
Exit question- why are a MAJORITY of MINORITIES so easily led like children to vote for democrats?
