Geraldo: Impeach Rick Perry for his secessionist chatter!
posted at 4:05 pm on April 17, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via RCP, a communique from the newest addition to NBC’s reality series, “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!” (Yes, really.) Why, he’s so mad he could spit.
I share his contempt for this whining nonsense, premised as it is on Perry’s spite at his side having lost a fair election, but why the urge to purge with impeachment? If this is as grievous a sin as Geraldo says, Texans can simply vote the guy out. He’s surely right about Perry cynically gaming this to fend off a challenge from Kay Bailey Hutchison, but while secession bravado might help in the primary with the 18 percent who support it, he’ll pay in the general when the Democrats start launching attack ads aimed at the other 82.
Anyway, no need to get exercised about it. After all, according to Hillary, Texas is already its own country.

AP, please. No Geraldo. I’m just going to have to sign off HA for today because my blood pressure can’t take it.
Geraldo – it’s not treason. It’s their RIGHT.

doesn’t impeachment require some type of crime to be committed?
Surely Geraldo isn’t suggesting rowdy speech is a crime.
If it is a crime to start shooting off your mouth, time for obama and biden to go as well!

Allah are you anticipating another thread of your commenters agreeing with Perry, that Texas can and should secede?
Instead of inspiring you to post on the topic again, why not take the rest of the day off early? It’s Friday!

A man who thinks that people from other countries don’t have to obey our immigration laws is attacking Perry? The presidents who have refused to close our borders are the ones who should be impeached.

Daddy-O on April 17, 2009 at 4:10 PM
Impeach Perry?
First of all, he was not talking about secession.
Secondly, if Perry were going to be impeached it would have happened during the height of his Texas-Trans Corridor and HPV inoculation nonsense.
Impeach Perry? This has made him more endeared by Texans then had he actually built a wall on the Rio Grande by himself.

Note to Geraldo. Here’s the correct list of priorities for the Texans:
1. Learn not to murder mentally retarded people.
2. Learn that wearing costumes is reserved for theater actors.
3. Finally, stop saying stupid sh*t in public.
We’re not even through with 1. yet.

Why does Geraldo care if Texas secedes? I mean, national borders are just there to be ignored. No need for him to his-panic. (His crummy wordplay, not mine.)

Exactly. Based on comments around here, he just gained about 7 points since he said it.

Whorealdo obviousle doesn’t realized that Texas, when it was negotiating to give up its status as a Republic to become a State, insisted on an “out” and was granted this by agreement with the United States of America. Further, Texas could choose not to secede but to remake itself as five States each with their own representatives. No treason. Just shrewd bargaining. The lefties might not like having ten “Texas” Senators in the U.S. Senate. I think that it would be great.

Remember, kids: Secession is only treasonous when Texans talk about it…
“In preparation for Vermont’s bicentennial in 1991, public debates — moderated by then-Lt. Gov. Howard Dean — were held in seven towns before crowds that averaged 230 citizens. At the end of each, Dean asked all those in favor of Vermont’s seceding from the Union to stand and be counted. In town after town, solid majorities stood. The final count: 999 (62 percent) for secession and 608 opposed.
In early 2003, transplanted Southerner and retired Duke University economics professor Thomas Naylor gave a speech at Johnson State College opposing the Iraq war. When he pitched the idea of secession to the crowd, he saw many eyes ‘light up,’ he said. Later that year, he and several others started a loosely organized movement (now a think tank) called the Second Vermont Republic, which has an independent quarterly journal, Vermont Commons, and a Web site.”

Cindy Munford on April 17, 2009 at 4:20 PM
Geraldo is a tool.
Just the threat of Texas dividing into 5 states would almost guarantee 10 new Republican Senators in D.C. That is more power to leverage this administration than anything.
What may be interesting is that even the perception threat of secession may be the one thing that saves our country from President Alinsky.

Geraldo seems to like the laws, once they apply to sticking it to conservatives. However, illegals are above the law to him.
Give me someone with credibility.
Perry was just expressing the frustration the governors are having with the nitwits in the federal government oppressing the states’ rights.

Speedwagon82 on April 17, 2009 at 4:24 PM
Isn’t this the objective of the liberal open border policy to balkenze the country? so open borders that intentionally destroy the country is patriotic but wanting to leave the idiots in washington is treason? Ok got it
unseen on April 17, 2009 at 4:25 PM
Yes, and judging on those comments in the so-called “awful” thread two days ago, the vast majority of HA posters see no problem with Texas seceding. I take the position that we need to win in the upcoming elections and that Perry was not implying secession in that speech anyway.
But people who say that ANY state does not have the right to secede are ludicrous.
carbon_footprint on April 17, 2009 at 4:25 PM
Doesnt Geraldo have something better to do? Like standing in the middle of a Hurricane next to a sea wall, waiting for a wave to knock him over?
If he isnt getting punched in the nose, doing his best Jim Cantore impersonation, or giving us alot of drama in describing the scene, is he really of any use to anybody?
TheHat on April 17, 2009 at 4:26 PM
Perry’s chatter is not premised on his spite at his side having lost a fair election. It’s based on the 10th Amendment and the federal government’s constant intrusion over states’ rights.
Sure – I don’t want Texas to secede, either. However, if enough Texans think the federal government is being too oppressive they can secede. The numbers aren’t there, but I think Perry’s right for reminding people that there are options out there for fighting the federal gov’t.

KBird on April 17, 2009 at 4:27 PM
Geraldo is stuck on his own racist misunderstandings the same as Obama is.
READ MY LIPS: Though by our own rights, Texas COULD choose to survive on its own, Perry and Texans choose to uphold the US Constitution within the union of the member states.
Geraldo, on the other hand, chooses what portions of the Constitution he supports, and dismisses the rest as irrelevant.
By his own standards, Geraldo is the traitor.

carbon_footprint on April 17, 2009 at 4:30 PM
Texas is big but it isn’t big enough to hold all the incoming bodies, if this actually happened. Talk about a real estate boom, influx of brains and money! Hell, subdivided into 5 states they could even have their own athletic conference.
a capella on April 17, 2009 at 4:30 PM
Don’t like Perry, wife actually hates him, he has done several un-conservative things (trans siberian highway, inactivity on the border) but this issue won’t hurt him. It’s a states rights issue when push comes to shove and that will help him greatly with the base and independents. I’ll probably vote for him though I wish there were a better choice out there.
b4itsover on April 17, 2009 at 4:31 PM
CNN might be a better fit for Geraldo with murderer & drunk driver Rick Sanchez.
sweetcake on April 17, 2009 at 4:32 PM
Again…when did he specifically say that Texas should split from the United States? I’ve looked at his exact quote and he you can make the case that there is a clear line between the succession comment and the part about Texans being independent.
Being familiar with this guy and Texas politics in general, this was for local consumption…mostly because the crowd that day and Texans in general actually understand the context.
The point still stands. The federal government is overreaching and it’s time for states to pushback or roll over and die as independent entities.
I keep thinking you must have heard something else, or his comments are getting filtered through a New York sensibility….having ‘contempt’ for this ‘whining nonsense’ seems like complete overreaction.
And I can’t believe I’m having to defend Rick Perry…I don’t know how I feel about that. He’s not horrible, but hardly anyone special.
