Auto czar under investigation for kickbacks
posted at 9:31 am on April 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Yet another of Barack Obama’s major appointments has legal troubles. Steven Rattner, the auto czar that never worked in the auto industry, did work as a senior executive at an investment firm doing business with New York’s state pension fund. According to the SEC, Rattner may have arranged illegal kickbacks in exchange for investing in the pension fund — and the Obama administration was aware of the allegations when Obama appointed him auto czar (via JWF):
Steven Rattner, the leader of the Obama administration’s auto task force, was one of the executives involved with payments under scrutiny in a probe of an alleged kickback scheme at New York state’s pension fund, according to a person familiar with the matter.
A Securities and Exchange Commission complaint says a “senior executive” of Mr. Rattner’s investment firm met with a politically connected consultant about a finder’s fee. Later, the complaint says, the firm received an investment from the state pension fund, then paid a $1.1 million fee.
The “senior executive,” not named in the complaint, is Mr. Rattner, according to the person familiar with the matter. He is co-founder of the investment firm, Quadrangle Group, which he left to join the Treasury Department to oversee the auto task force earlier this year.
A spokeswoman for the Treasury, which is in charge of the auto task force, said that “during the transition, Mr. Rattner made us aware of the pending investigation.”
Doesn’t this sound a little familiar? Tim Geithner at Treasury blew off paying tens of thousands of dollars in taxes over several years, even though he had received reimbursement to pay them. The Obama administration insisted on appointing him to Treasury Secretary anyway, despite the fact that Geithner would run tax collection, declaring him the only person in America who could do the job. Bill Richardson got appointed to Commerce Secretary despite a publicly-known pay-to-play investigation involving the Governor, which eventually forced Richardson into a humiliating withdrawal. A series of high-level nominees with tax and ethics problems followed, including Cabinet appointees Hilda Solis, Tom Daschle, and Kathleen Sebelius.
And once again, we not only have an appointment with legal and ethical problems, we have another one that the Obama administration appointed knowing about them. In this case, one can hardly claim that Rattner was “uniquely qualified” to run the auto industry; he has no experience in the auto industry at all.
Barack Obama ran on the promise to change the way Washington does business, but clearly he must have meant for the worse. He’s already surpassed the number of ethically tarnished appointments for Bush and Clinton combined, and he hasn’t yet hit 90 days in office. Did Hope and Change mean Kickback Artists and Tax Cheats?

I can’t think of another administration in our history that is so blatant about giving us the finger on an almost hourly basis. It is surreal. They literally do what ever the heck they want and there is no shame.
I keep thinking that their dishonor will be their undoing but in this strange new universe we now live in, it appears that they only get rewarded.

What amuses me is the amount of Czars our there…. suddenly we have Czars for everything…
Now, considering these are appointed positions without Congressional oversite…
And usurp the powers of various cabinet positions…. cabinet positions who DO have to go through Congresional hearings….
Isn’t this a defacto rearangement of Cabinet Powers, that, are ofen codified into law?

If the first gaggle of appointees that got rejected for being tax cheats didn’t pick the interest of the media and the voters, unfortunately i doubt this will. He is Obama, and he has risen. I am convinced he could be taped beating his dog, robbing a liquor store, and then going on a meth binge, and most media and people wouldn’t care.

WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICAN LEADERS??!!
Why doesn’t any republican leaders step up and fight, tooth and nail, against these appointments.
Every appointment should have had an attack dog attached to it…as a strategy, like the dems.
If nothing comes of it, then the “attack” fades into oblivion…if something does, like so many of these appointments, then they are revived, rehashed, and dem leadership is shamed.
Carville practically built the dems on that type of strategy.
Attack…Attack…Attack…the same tactics as the dems.

Vashta.Nerada on April 17, 2009 at 10:04 AM
The vetting process for an Obama appointee consists entirely of one set of questions:
1) How much did they donate to the campaign?
2) How much campaigning did they do?
3) Did they enable bundling of campaign contributions?
4) Do they believe in Barack Obama?
5) Do they believe in more government control over the private sector?
6) Are they sufficiently imbued with the proper criteria of socialist thought, of Obamaesque views of government?
7) Is there something in their background that can be used against them should they stray from the reservation?
These are the Seven Pillars of Wisdom that gets one a White House pass, and the perks of serving the Chosen One.
The result? Well, look at the list of Obama appointees thus far.

Most Republicans who reside long in Washington (Or any New England state for that matter) quickly decide that they would rather be liked, than be effective.
It’s more important to them that they and their families continue to be invited to the A-list parties, than it is to do the job they were sent there to do.

Liberals don’t mind politicians who commint crimes because basically they don’t believe in the concept of crime.
For them, it’s all relative.
And they totally excuse their own behaviour, no matter how odious it is, so they are simply being consistent in a perverted manner by excusing the behaviour of criminal politicians.

With all due respect, that is not a good analogy. Wal*Mart is a very organized, successful and well run company that brings value to people at a fair price.
The Starbucks of White Houses may be more apt; unorganized, overdeveloped, and waning company that sold itself on image and delivers product at a ridiculously high price.

MarktheGreat also stated the same…this is the real crux of the problem.
We have allowed the “Carville Cabal” to run amok. They can attack, and we have no counter attack. Obama has a group that meets daily to determine their attacks…they strategize, we are in hiding.
I feel like the crewman being chased down by the pirates, they keep hitting, we keep running and hiding.
We need a pit bull, an attack dog, we need a “civilian” Mark Levin, and nasty SOB, that rips these guys up…can we clone Carville and make him a conservative?
