Tax Day and Tea Parties: The writing on the wall

It’s Tax Day, and across America, tens of thousands of Americans plan to attend Tea Party rallies. Our friend Andrew Malcolm notes the apparent irony of a Gallup poll that shows Americans more satisfied than historical norms about the taxes they pay. However, Gallup’s poll relates to what we pay today — and not what we’ll pay in the future:
The new survey purports that a plurality of Americans (48%) think they’re paying just about the right amount in taxes. Traditionally in American society, just the right amount in taxes is zero.
But now taxpayers are like Goldilocks on her third bowl of borrowed bear porridge. It’s just right.
A slightly smaller group that apparently drinks bottled water (46%) thinks taxes are too high.
No, really.
On this annual day of financial reckoning with the Washington crowd of talking suits spending way more money than we’re all paying combined, more Americans apparently think they’re getting their money’s worth.
Perhaps the Gallup poll does reflect the future after all. If 48% believe that their taxes are just right, it might be because that’s the exact same percentage that will pay zero in the near future, according to Barack Obama’s tax policies. With Obama’s emphasis on refundables, 48.7% of Americans will wind up paying no income tax at all. For them, zero is the right amount, and they have no reason to be unhappy … yet.
Unfortunately, in a short period of time, even those people will have to start paying taxes, and not in small amounts:
The Obama administration will be hard-pressed to avoid raising taxes on the middle class, according to economists crunching federal budget numbers in the lead-up to tax return day — today, April 15.
President Obama’s proposed changes to the tax code, combined with exploding entitlement costs, will lead to ever-growing debt, according to independent estimates. The big question for Obama and his economic team will be whether he can meet the rising costs with increased tax revenue only from small slices of the electorate. …
“You just simply can’t tax the rich enough to make this all up,” said Martin A. Sullivan, a former economic aide in the Reagan administration who said he backed Obama last fall.
“Especially just for getting the budget to a sustainable level, there needs to be a broad-based tax increase,” said Sullivan, now a contributing editor at Tax Analysts publications. “If you want to do healthcare on top of that, almost certainly, it just makes [a middle-class tax increase] all the more certain.”
What’s the debt they’re discussing? Time to break out the projected deficit chart again:

At some point, we have to start paying these bills, and when we do, it will hammer the middle class.
That’s what drives the Tea Parties — not taxes today, but all of the spending that will eventually require crushing taxes to resolve. The Obama administration plans a spending spree unlike anything outside of world wars in our history, and wants to sell a fantasy that only the rich have to pay for it. It’s ridiculous on its face. The amounts are staggeringly high, and even 100% confiscation wouldn’t begin to cover it.
We will try to get Tea Party updates during the Ed Morrissey Show today, starting at 3 pm ET. Don’t miss a minute.
Update: Michelle has the history of Tea Parties, and notes that it all began with Porkulus.

I will have my two and four year old kids with me. We may be doing a lot of walking around/coming and going. I may even end up buying a couple of umbrella strollers in case they get tired. I can’t stand to miss it, but am not sure how well it will go. Hopefully there will be other kids there and since it is downtown we may do a little sight-seeing…anything to get to be there at least for a little while. But I completely understand your predicament. If they were just a little older…

oh, I’m angry at all the people in Congress, R, D or I. One of my signs reads “send Congress & ACORN to GITMO”. and i mean it. and if it ends up on the news (i really don’t want to be on TV because it adds 15 lbs), then i’m ok with that.
my cats know enough to vote “no”. and hey, i’m just as angry at Rs.

Better then leaving them in front of the TV and having PBS tell them that everyone is special.

WOW!!!! Check out this Tea Party Anthem!!
Theme song for the Tax Day Tea Party – see video below
http://radiopatriot.blogspot.com/2009/03/orlando-tea-party-has-signature-song-to.html
This song was written and recorded by Florida resident, African American, entertainer Lloyd Marcus, who will perform it at this Saturday’s Tea Party rally in Orlando, Florida.
Titled “American Tea Party”, the tune is catchy and inspiring, nicely capturing the spirit of Americans joining together for Tea Party protests across America.
Lyrics below:
“American Tea Party” by Lloyd Marcus
© 2009 ZEPHYRUS MUSIC, BMI
Mr President!
Your stimulus is sure to bust
Its just a socialistic scheme
The only thing it will do
Is kill the American Dream
You wanna take from achievers
Somehow you think that’s fair.
And redistribute to those folks
Who won’t get out of their easy chair.
We’re havin’ a tea party across this land
If you love this country
Come on and join our band
We’re standin’ up for freedom and liberty
Cause patriots have shown us freedom ain’t free
So when they call you a racist cause you disagree
It just another of their dirty tricks to silence you and me.
I believe in the Constitution and all it stands for.
Anyone who tramples it should be booted out the door.
We’re havin’ a tea party across this land
If you love this country
Come on and join our band
We’re standin’ up for freedom and liberty
Cause patriots have shown us freedom ain’t free
Now we’re not advocating violence
That’s what the so-called peace crowd do
We’re talkin’ peaceful protest to defend the red, white and blue
We gotta vote out these clowns who don’t love the USA
Who stay up late loosing sleep fearing what the French might say
We’re havin’ a tea party across this land
If you love this country
Come on and join our band
We’re standin’ up for freedom and liberty
Cause patriots have shown us freedom ain’t free
We’re havin’ a tea party across this land
If you love this country
Come on and join our band
We’re standin’ up for freedom and liberty
Cause patriots have shown us freedom ain’t free
Freedom ain’t free
(Stand up for America)
Freedom ain’t free
(Gotta take a stand)
Freedom ain’t free
(Mr Obama)
Freedom ain’t free
(we work hard for our money)
Freedom ain’t free
(Don’t give it away)
Freedom ain’t free
(Save the day)
Freedom ain’t free
(Don’t go givin’ it away)
Freedom ain’t free
(It ain’t gonna work)
Freedom ain’t free
(Give back our freedom)
Freedom ain’t free
(Give back our liberty)
Freedom ain’t free
(I love my country)
(fade out)

Congratulations Ed,
I just read this thread and want give you big shout out on a job well done in letting a couple of these trolls, capitulus being one, turn this place into another KOS or Huffpo with their personal and insulting remarks.
I’m all up for debate with those who have differing views, but the name calling and the toilet humor by a few is over the top and hurting this great site. It’s no wonder I don’t see so many familiar faces.

I went to a “Tea Party” here in Greenville SC. I was struck immediately by the difference between a protest from the right vs. a protest from the left. Let me explain. At the Tea Party we proudly displayed the U.S. Flag, we spoke of our PRIDE to be Americans, we spoke of our LOVE OF NATION, we talked with joy about the constitution, we talked about our pride in our nations history.
Now – does that sound like a protest by the LEFT? Does that sound like Code Pick?
We are AMERICANS – and we are so damn proud to be Americans that we will fight for our desire and our rights to remain Americans.
There I said it.
jake-the-goose on April 15, 2009 at 12:38 PM

Reaffirming sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution is not secession. It’s an act of strongly reminding the Federal Government about the things the Constitution forbids it from doing.
It is as PATRIOTIC as could get – something you seem to know nothing about.
But to you, anay act against Obama is an act of treason. “Obama is the State! Obama is the USA!” according to you. We’re just reminding him -and you – that Obama is not Louis XIV.
It was because of the madness of a king and a government that this Nation came to being in the first place.

Do we constantly spend trillions of dollars in causes the people wouldn’t generally agree with or bother spending govt money on? Or do we hold congress and the POTUS to the job that we elected them to? If it were Bush during his third term I’d bet we’d have the same thing happening now!

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people… except for the power to seize control of banks and auto companies, violate contracts with private citizens, snd spend trillions of dollars the government doesn’t have on ridiculous crap that appeals to carefully targeted constituencies, as long as the ruling party thinks there’s a crisis.
If the government under all political parties followed the actual text and meaning of the real Tenth Amendment, elections wouldn’t be desperate matters of life and death for the voters. You shouldn’t have to worry about the industry you work for being nationalized if the wrong guy wins. And the alternatives for an American citizen should include a few options besides submission and secession. The whole point of the Constitution was to ensure the people would not be presented with a slate of tyrants to choose from when they cast their votes.
All this “we won, so get on your knees” nonsense illustrates the shallow understanding liberals have for the country they live in… as if the sole important feature of American governance is the way we select the leader through a popular vote every four years. What the leader is allowed to do is at least as important as how he gets there… and if he arrives with power limited only by how angry the opposition becomes, and an endless supply of free money he can siphon from future voters to pay for today’s plans, it’s no surprise his plans are sloppy. You’re better off being ruled by a constitutionally-bound hereditary monarch than a democratically elected socialist, especially since the socialist will invariably steal money from his opponents to pay off the people he thinks will keep him in power. Once the socialist gets that wealth transfer calibrated to 49% victims and 51% dependents, the dead grey stasis of collectivist politics settles in. What was the percentage of people who don’t pay any taxes again?
Yeah, but he’s perfectly qualified to run the financial, automotive, and health care industries, right? He’s omniscient when it comes to billions of daily transactions in a trillion dollar economy, and he might even get around to protecting his citizens from pirate attacks, as long as he gets to blow a couple billion on his housing programs first.

The fun is beginning in Phoenix even before the party starts:
Just got back from the gym, where I usually go after work. Since I took the day off to attend the Phoenix Tea Party and had to go get some blood drawn for labwork, I thought I’d just go to the gym early.
Ran into my trainer, who typically sees me after work. She asked me what I was doing there and I said “Well, I had to have some labs done plus I’m going to the Tea Party this afternoon downtown.” She said “Oh, you’re going to a tea party?” and I said “No, I’m going to THE Tea Party.”
She made that little wave people make when something disgusts them and curled her upper lip. Said to me “So, are you a teabagger?” I said “Do you know what that term means as it’s being used today? It’s actually a very crude slang term with sexual connotations.”
She said “Well, I know, but are you a teabagger?” Light went off in my cavernous cranium — she knows exactly what she is saying.
I said to her “You know, I’ve been called a lot of things, and the term you use is quite offensive, but I’d much rather be the one labeled than the one doing the labeling. That says something about you I’d rather not know, and it’s too bad you and the mainstream media seem to think it’s okay. Have a nice day.”
Wow, talk about a polarized nation. However, there were others in the gym who wanted to know more. So I told them. Who knows, might have a few additional folks show up tonight!
koz on April 15, 2009 at 1:51 PM

I live in a little podunk town in the middle of nowhere, NM. Last night, I visited the website of our local newspaper and read the short blurb about our local “Tea Party” gathering.
Of the 40 comments about the article (prior to mine), only one local person had commented. There were a few from neighboring communities, but by far, most of the comments, ranting about ’silly, evil rethuglicans and their foolish little tea parties’, posted (according to their IP addresses) from places a thousand miles away (in various directions).
I can only conclude that ACORN or Moveon or something similar assigned people to search across the nation for articles and disparage any news about the gatherings.
They are really afraid of this grass roots movement for some reason. Perhaps they think that it is going to be even more effective than do many of the people who are organizing and attending the ‘tea parties’

In a minute and a half, she:
insinuated the tea parties were full of “Obama bashers” and whack jobs;
got in a protester’s face and raised her voice at him;
dismissed him as a fascist with a wave of her arm at the end;
argued with another protester;
blamed Fox for her presence there and whined about the tea parties being “anti-CNN.”
SHE HAD NO PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY AT ALL!
Guess that’s par for the course though . . . I’m submitting something via CNN’s contact form about this freak. I hope other people who watched it will do the same.

We just got back from the one in Virginia Beach. It was cold, windy, and drizzling (oh, and my screams-at-the-drop-of-a-hat son was, well, screaming)… but there were at least a couple hundred people there. Lots of flags, and an incredible amount of children/teens. I had several people thank me for bringing my children – made me feel it was worth the effort to drag them out there.
I just wish my representatives cared – I think it says a lot that a mother of three dragged her children out on a crappy day to protest government spending. It’s not a walk in the park, and not something I’d do if I weren’t passionate about it.

i usually watch FNC, but i have to take issue with a comment i heard within the last hour describing the teaparties as protests against Obama’s tax policies. yes, I am protesting obama’s tax policies, but it is the idjits in Congress that voted for them. fire all of them. congress is at fault. R, D & I.
going to Richmond now to protest at 6 pm.

My family in Longview, Tx just got back from the 1 hour meet-up at the court house and apparently about a thousand showed up – more than has ever shown up there before and far more than I expected from just an averaged size city.

Wrong.
Shut your mouth if all you’re going to do is stand behind such deplorable behavior.

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve told someone that we don’t have a Democracy, we have a Constitutional Republic. Schools can’t seem to tell the difference between them.
And as you point out here, it seems the indoctrination now has people living like it’s a democracy, where winning an election justifies whatever the winners choose to do. So it’s okay to violate laws, ignore the Constitution, break contracts, and use taxes to appropriate privately owned money.

What I saw at the Boston Tea Party:
I’d guess when I showed up, there were around 2 to 3 thousand folks there, with more flowing in throughout. I saw zero counter-protesters or troublemakers. A lot of Gadsden and American flags, a lot of signs mostly anti-spending, a bunch bashing Barney Frank, a lot of young folks with signs unhappy that they’re going to get stuck paying Obama’s bill. The mood was relaxed and festive, the weather was very good. Only a couple newsvans that I could see. The only downer was that the PA system for the speakers was terrible, unless you were within 10 feet you couldn’t hardly make out what they were saying.
Here’s my video:

The speaker is Carla Howell, a libertarian activist. I couldn’t stay for the whole thing, but that’s what I saw.

waaaat open bar? im so there. you’d better be as well, seeing as i’ll be lamenting the fact that Cindy Munford wont be there.

Deplorable? Maybe.
Factual? Definitely.
I for one do not object to the goings on of Atlanta’s media conglomerates. They’re both attacked frequently by Murdoch’s US arms, but those arms can’t take any criticism.
