Fiasco: Amnesty thugs break glass, shut down Tancredo at UNC

posted at 2:20 pm on April 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

Two clips from the latest Orwellian free-speech kabuki on campus featuring “right-wing extremist” Tom Tancredo versus the forces of Dialogue and Enlightenment. The Daily Tar Heel reports:

“I’m here because I represent UNC-Chapel Hill and I don’t support racism or fascism in the institution in which I am an educator,” graduate student Jason Bowers said…

After Tancredo entered the room, protesters kept him from speaking by shouting insults and holding a sign declaring “no dialogue with hate” in front of his face. Tancredo waited calmly while protestors held the sign and chanted…

After protestors exited the hallway, Tancredo spoke for about two minutes before a protestor outside the building banged on a window, shattering the glass.

Tancredo was escorted out of the room by police after he deemed the situation too volatile, Young said.

The protesters naturally rejoiced after Tanc was silenced, chanting, “We shut him down; no racists in our town” and, more ominously, “Yes, racists, we will fight, we know where you sleep at night!” ALIPAC caught it all on tape: The first clip is of security pepper-spraying people in the hall and the second captures the interruption and broken window that ended the lecture. I’ve been writing posts like this about immigration events on college campuses since HA started; no doubt people will still be writing them decades from now. Content warning.

Sigh. Don’t you just love tolerance? It’s a good thing no one is making illegal alien cartoons for these people to protest.

No combine this with the DHS’s epistle on the rise in “right wing” violence and hate groups.

And you have the groundwork for any and all violence against people who oppose the liberals.

The violence inherent in the Left.

Meanwhile, I attended a Tea Party here in Toledo. There was some anger in the air, as to the growing size of the government. Yet there was no hint of violence.

Anyone who opposes illegal immigration is a racist and a hate monger.
Anyone who opposes affirmative action is a racist and a hate monger.
Anyone who opposes welfare is full of hate and wants poor people to starve to death.

Combine this with the left’s penchant for outlawing anything they declare “hate speech”, and you have the ground work for jailing anyone who speaks out against any govt program.

MarkTheGreat on April 15, 2009 at 2:25 PM

Somebody better call DHS…can’t let these extremists get away with this sort of stuff, right?

[If they can exercise their freedom of expression in tearing up the place and pushing and shoving, and preventing the freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of speech of others, can I exercise MY freedom of expression by beating these bastards into the ground? After all, I am just a mere victim of their hate.]

belad on April 15, 2009 at 2:38 PM

We at the University of Chicago hosted Tancredo 2 months ago and were able to have a constructive dialogue. There were no protests, no sabotage, no violence, nothing. It was an excellent event. It’s unfortunate other schools can’t do the same…

This is the kind of loonyness that runs rampant not just at the college, but the entire town of Chapel Hill.

It is so bad that, when the state was putting out millions to build the state zoo in Asheboro, none other that Jesse Helms felt compelled to say, “Why spend all that money to build a zoo in Ashboro? Just put a chain link fence around Chapel Hill.”

If you notice in the video, the studenst were allowed to even hold their banner to the side in the room, there was civil discourse taking place and they couldn’t stand the fact they were getting no attention, hence the attempt to cover Tancredo with the banner.

The campus cops reacted even more stupidly than the students, IMO. “This is my building.” No it’s not, Dippy McDumbwad.

The administration of the university was FULLY aware this might happen, they deliberately “undermanned” themselves as an excuse to shut it down in the face of the protests.

There were fliers all over the town and campus for almost a week asking people to show. Fully half of them weren’t even UNC-CH students at all.

“I’m here because I represent UNC-Chapel Hill and I don’t support racism or fascism in the institution in which I am an educator,” graduate student Jason Bowers said

Illegal aliens in this country are Mexicans, Irish, Chinese, Pakistani, etc. “Right-wing extremists” like Tancredo (and the rest of us) want all of them to be required to obey the law — just like everyone else in this country, and like other foreigners waiting their turn to legally enter the country — are required to do. Exactly how is that “racist” or “facist” Bowers? I feel sorry for whatever students are being “educated” by a clueless moron like you.

MadisonConservative on April 15, 2009 at 3:29 PM

It’s fascinating in an appalling way. The one speaker tries to point out to the protesters that no one was interfering with their speech, so they should give the same courtesy to Tancredo, but it doesn’t register to them. They think that they should be allowed to protest because they’re right, not because there’s any social obligation for civil discourse. Consequently, they are not obligated to provide any such courtesy to Tancredo because he’s wrong.

It’s so, so poisonous.
