Video: Did McCain really snub Palin on Leno?
posted at 7:15 pm on April 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
That’s the word from CNN, pegging off of a post at TeamSarah. I don’t buy it. Viewed in isolation, it does look like he’s aware that he didn’t mention her and is winking at that fact. The problem is, you shouldn’t view it in isolation. From Meet the Press, March 30:
MR. GREGORY: In terms of future leaders of the Republican Party, would you like to see Sarah Palin become president?
SEN. McCAIN: I’d like to see her compete. I think we’ve got some very good candidates: Jon Huntsman and–the problem when I run down these names, I always leave, leave out a, a name–Bobby Jindal, Tim Pawlenty. There’s, there’s so many. There’s a lot of good, fresh talent out there.
MR. GREGORY: But would you support Palin?
SEN. McCAIN: Oh, I’d have to see who the candidates are and, and what the situation is at the time. But have no doubt of my respect, admiration and love for Sarah and her family.
He’s always taken that very politic “love and admire” line on Palin publicly. Why would he now drop it and deliberately insult her when he was praising her just two weeks ago? I’m thinking that when he tells Leno he’s left out somebody’s name, he means that he assumes he has because he’s always forgetting someone when he runs down this laundry list. This time it was Palin; on MTP, it was Romney. No deliberate snub, just an old man being absent-minded and joking about his absent-mindedness.
Or, maybe U.S. News and Tommy Christopher are right and the GOP establishment is turning on Palin to torpedo her chances in 2012. You make the call!

I man-love you, AP, but sometimes I can’t figure you out. But I agree, it’s doesn’t seem malicious to me.
In fact, the question is the about the head of the GOP – while Sarah might be on the inside pole for the nomination, she’s definitely taken an Alaska-first approach lately. Which is good. So she’s not the face of the party.
I don’t want her being the one always criticizing Obama, I want Jindal to do that (better), I want Sanford to do that, and I want Perry to do that.
Spirit of 1776 on April 14, 2009 at 7:20 PM
Nothing would kill a potential GOP candidacy, for anyone, faster than an endorsement from Juan McShame. Palin should be happy if he never mentions her name again.

I am getting so sick of John McCain. Isn’t it time for him to exit stage left? Send him out to pasture. He lost the election on his own. It was lost long before Sara Palin came on the sceen. If it wasn’t for her he would not have received as many votes as he did.
He was weak and still is. Nothing but a pandering fool who refers to everyone as “my good friend”. It is disgusting and disengenious to say the least. My hope for the future of the republican party is that he gets voted out of office and he takes his stupid daughter with him.

McCain, Specter, Palin.
One of these is not a tw8t.
Stephen M on April 14, 2009 at 7:28 PM
Palin is a real reformer and the Republican aka RINOS don’t want a real reformer they are Corprocans. Now Newt Gingrich warned everyone that a 3rd party split from the Republican Party could be coming 2012 just like before that happened with Ross Perot. Are the RINOS listening? I am an Independent I will follow the Conservative. I voted for Governor Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain’s husband and I would do it again…McCain either has to lead, follow or get out of the way.
Dr Evil on April 14, 2009 at 7:28 PM
Oh, he’s not afraid of her benny. He’s just a backstabbing RINO lowlife that can’t help himself. Put him in front of a camera in front of a liberal audience and he can’t wait to stick it to somebody in the conservative wing. Same church; different pew.

Another “watch as the Republican Party destroys itself, one agonizing little papercut at a time” thread…sheesh.
Proof yet again that the Republican Party is as bad off, or worse, than it was back in the dark days of Gerald Ford after Watergate: resigned to be the p*ssywhipped effeminate “opposition” that just wants to go along so it can smile as an occasional scrap falls from the Liberal plate.
Wanderlust on April 14, 2009 at 7:34 PM
Maybe he knows Gov. Palin is forming her own party…otherwise, it was clearly an intentional snub of her (and governors Jindal and Sanford).

In my opinion – any Palin / McCain feud only results in positives for her. She needs to disassociate from the RINO side and rally around us on the right – we’ll catch her back.

bridgetown on April 14, 2009 at 7:44 PM
OK, since SOMEBODY has to say it…
I do think he forgot to say her name intentionally as opposed to not doing so accidentally.
The problem is determining WHY he didn’t.
As Allah said, it could be because he was poking fun at himself by not saying the one name he ought to NOT have forgotten due to how recent it was.
It could be malicious.
I don’t know.
I just think a few people are going off half-cocked by automatically assuming that intentionality=maliciousness.
Turtler on April 14, 2009 at 7:46 PM
I could see Palin heading up a new reform party movement, and I’d likely vote for it too. She might just have the positions, personality, and achievements to pull it off. After all, she’s already taken on the R’s in Alaska and won handily, and she successfully weathered the MSM slander machine and the Dem attack dogs and came through smiling and none the less for wear and tear. And besides, there aren’t many with a D or an R after their names that I wouldn’t enjoy seeing get thrown outta Washington.
Another spot of Tea anyone?
ornery_independent on April 14, 2009 at 7:47 PM
Wow, if McCain forgot his running mate’s name (no, his running mate wasn’t Joe Lieberman…), then what else would he have forgotten if he was President? Maybe they were right about him being too old…
Whatever, I’m sure we’ll be enlightened by AP as to MegMac’s response… I’m sure it somehow involves Teh Gays…

If the republican party is going to follow McCain, consider me out of the republican party.
I am sick of him and his daughter. They are poison to the republican party.
He hates that Palin attracted larger crowds and positive attention. Nobody gave a damn about this fuddy duddy until he chose Sarah. Since he thinks he is something special, he is blaming Palin for his loss, when he was the idiot that overreacted in this financial mess and supported TARP, as well as complimenting Obama.
He campaigned for Obama and threw Palin and us conservatives under the bus.
jencab on April 14, 2009 at 7:53 PM
Oh, and I agree with those who think that by NOT mentioning her, he IS (or at least MAY BE) endorsing Palin. An endorsement from him could be the kiss of death for a presidential run for her.
It’s also interesting to note that by NOT mentioning her, she remains a main topic of discussion. Would the opposite be true?

The real slam came on election nite when McCain wouldn’t let Gov. Palin address her supporter. For that Mac should be ashamed.

John McCain reminds me of a high-school quarterback who is slated to receive an award for achievement at the high-school prom dance who asks the most attractive and popular cheerleader to accompany him to the dance to gain more attention and acclaim and to perhaps indulge his late-night fantasies by wooing and cooing with her, only to discover at the dance that she will never dream of going to bed with John in order to protect her virtue, that she is extremely ambitious and career-oriented, that she only went out with John in order to get the ‘jock’ vote in the election for student President and that even more alarming that she has upstaged him, become the belle of the ball by displaying unparalleled charisma and sucked all the oxygen out of the room, leaving him feeling as if he was only an attending waiter rather than feted guest of honor.
technopeasant on April 14, 2009 at 8:03 PM
Listen boys and girls….I’m a Republican and the only reason that I voted for John McCain was because of Sarah Palin. Today, if there was a vote, I would vote for her again. I’ll vote for her if she runs as a Republican and I’ll vote for her if she starts her own party. She understands the corruption, the evilness of politics and tries to rise above the fray. She is still attacked and crucified daily by the MSM, the Democrats and yes, even Republicans. The only reason why is because they are all scared to death of her.
shomegirl on April 14, 2009 at 8:04 PM

Nah. McMaverick is just sloooooooowly trying to distance himself from Sarah. He has inside info about she understands the world, the economy, and international affairs about as well as a rather dull high school girl.
So, he wants to put some serious carpet between him and inevitable HOLY CRAP SHE’S DUMB that will occur multiple times between now and the time the Palintologists realize that she aint all that and a bag of chips.

It is a good thing in my mind that the GOP DC crowd doesnt have a great approval of Palin. It means she is doing something right. Also its not like everyone is against her there. Fred Malek one of the BEST GOP fundraisers and a multi-millionaire is squarely in her corner. He could be one of the main bank-rollers when she runs for higher office.

Quite the contrary: if you read my above analogy, McCain got in Palin a lot more than he bargained for and expected but even more important Sarah Palin stole his thunder by becoming more important than her running mate.
Sarah Palin committed the unforgivable sin in politics. She upstaged her boss not only once but consistently. McCain’s ego was bruised. United mavericks, no more.

About the huge intellect-argument that is really tiresome, unjustified and malicious; try to run Alaska for three days up to a week, see if you make it. Oh and you have to take in all the federal laws, state laws, hunting, oil refineries, tourism, court system, now handle inquiries and attacks from the Lower 48. Deal with backstabbers from her Senate, Rep. twisting facts and making up stories, and run a family.
Nothing that any of you claim that you have done brilliantly, with a surplus that Alaskans get +$2K in a nice check.

BigWyo on April 14, 2009 at 9:55 PM
When speaking of potential 2012 presidential candidates there are two names McCain will never mention: mine and Palin’s
He knows he will be asked the question during almost interview and he knows what answer his audience is expecting him to give, yet unless pressed he always seems to happen to have Palin’s name slip his mind. He never forgets Pawlenty’s name. Or Jindals. He seems to mention Huntsman often enough, though few have heard of Huntsman, and Romney, who he supposedly hates, and Crisp, who has no shot. Yet he can’t remember his former running mate and the single most popular member of his party.
I can’t believe for a second that it is deliberate.
