Thank you for condemning Pres. Obama’s and congress’ plans to impose higher and higher cost of living increases in the future beyond even the plainly obvious future tax hikes to offset these massive deficits they are running. If normal everday expenses proportionately hurt lower income people more, then his (and our recent government’s) inflationary policies will no doubt hit these people worst. Who do you think companies will be passing their cap & trade cost increases on to? When Obama said his policies would necessitate that energy costs “skyrocket”, who do you think will feel it the most? Wake up, Capt. Kirk….this guy is decidedly NOT on our (middle class) side.

Adam Smith in his classic text The Wealth of Nations wrote the following about progressive taxation:

The necessaries of life occasion the great expense of the poor. They find it difficult to get food, and the greater part of their little revenue is spent in getting it. The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. A tax upon house-rents, therefore, would in general fall heaviest upon the rich; and in this sort of inequality there would not, perhaps, be anything very unreasonable. It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

If you don’t include FICA taxes on wages (as Fleischer fails to do), it isn’t a fair depiction of what people really pay in federal taxes. The federal income tax is progressive and does fall lightly on the lowest income earners, for good reason as other taxes, especially sales taxes, are disproportionately born by those earning lower incomes.

NBC just said republicans are having trouble organizing tea parties to offset Obama’s Speech yesterday.

They don’t care when these things started…most Americans think it is a republican fight against Obama…it is only in that he is president.

They don’t report the news until FOX does and then they frame the narrative. Just like The Onion article on Obama’s double Homicide…except this isn’t funny.

Exactly! It’s always all about Obama. They just can’t see that even democrats are fed up with this outlandish spending, and acknowledging that doesn’t help them make the republicans look bad, so they ignore it. The best thing that can happen today is for media outlets to find democrats are attending tea parties right along side the republicans. That would be worth its weight in gold.

Hello. Tea parties are not partisan. Americans in general are fed up with the pork and the bailouts and the massive spending and not being listened to by their elected officials. The news is making this a divisive issue (surprise). Unfortunately, I’m working two jobs today and that is 8am to 10pm. But I’ll be with them in spirit.

As for the income tax, these figures must be for families. Us single people in the lower brackets pay a whole lot more.

Great...and maddening....video. What the anti-tea party crowd can't or won't acknowledge is that these protest are non-partisan protests against government waste, or taxation with piss-poor representation. They are nor specifically against Obama, though as a profligate spender currently in office, he gets the lion's share of the blame. The impetus for these movements started with Bush's pre-socialism bailouts - very unhopeychangey policies built on by the current president and congress. At heart, the real dispute is that the tax code has become a social engineering tool to punish certain behaviors (e.g capital gains, accumulation of wealth, etc), reward others (e.g. hybrid car credit, indian hiring credit), and redistribute wealth ("cutting taxes" on the 40ish% of people that pay no income tax - a plan that the CBO has rightly categorized as direct spending, not tax cutting) - a CLEAR reversal of the founding pronciples of this country. To argue anything else is sheer folly and plainly and partisanly dishonest. Have to go file my MA state taxes so that they can double tax my RI income, now. Cheers.
