Audio: Humane Society’s newest spokesman? Rush Limbaugh

posted at 6:35 pm on April 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

Ben Smith hints darkly that this is a ploy by Rush to turn up the heat on Obama for not adopting a shelter dog, as he promised he would. I’m skeptical. Listen to the clips and judge for yourself. There’s nothing political about them; all I hear is a guy who loves animals — cats, specifically, to his eternal credit — performing a service for a good cause. (Hard to believe though it may be for some, he actually is a human being.) Besides, there’s no political mileage to be had from picking a fight as petty as the one Smith imagines, or at least not enough to make it worth Limbaugh’s while to become a full-fledged spokesman for some group. Or am I out of the loop and the shelter thing is something he’s been hammering Obama for on his show?

Exit question: Does this mean we’re the party of cat-lovers now? Awesome.

By your logic, if a toddler kicks you, you would punt the kid nice and hard.

I’ve scraped things with more worth than you off the bottom of my shoe.

As one end note. You ridiculed me, insinuating I was uneducated. I am clearly not. I am not the smartest one here on HA, but I am not down at your caliber of stupidity.

And yea, I enjoy the perverted and juvenile side of commenting on the site, but you are really just so immature, it puts me to shame.

Enjoy your life, whatever train wreck of it is left.

MB4 on April 14, 2009 at 8:24 PM

Do you keep any?

MadisonConservative on April 14, 2009 at 8:19 PM

No, I stopped breeding them years ago, and the three parrots I kept passed on due to a disease they got from a Vet. I did it when I was a teenager taking care of my Dad who had mass heart problems. I didn’t go out much then, so I took up birds for pets and had so many thought I would try my hand at breeding. I had quite a large brood for a while and actually made quite a bit of money off my hand tamed babies as I would get up and feed them like a human child, but with a syringe.

Seriously though… look into Meyers Parrots. They are great little parrots. The same size as a conure and they are 1000 time sweetier then conures. And the same price. You won’t be disappointed. :)

Around here, it’s the gazillion of snails at low tide that get stuck in between the toes. Clamming is fun, you see that squirt of water, and dig. Those suckers are quick tho.

Funny, I went to college in Maryland, and we used to drive out to the Chesapeake. My first time swimming at Ocean City beach, my toes kept getting pinched.

Of course, then I’m warned to keep my feet off the bottom, ’cause of the crabs.

Aww, they are so cute. That’s funny he’s afraid of the laser.

Peaches would try to kill us if we tried to keep her indoors. When we lived in LA, our cats were indoors because of coyotes, but out here we don’t seem to have that problem. I think there’s so many places they can go to that the dogs are enough to keep them away.

I live opposite Montauk on the North one, and I remember when I was young I’d go to my buddies’ house. They have one of the most beautiful properties on the water. The view is just breath taking. I was there for Easter, and they had a relative playing Irish songs on the bagpipes, and it was amazing. ANYWAY.

When we were kids, we’d go down to the water, and thousands of fiddler crabs would try to get back to their holes when they’d see us coming.

We’d scoop a few up, go back to the house, and put them in my friend’s fish tank, and watch the battles ensue. SO FUN for 10 year olds.

blatantblue on April 14, 2009 at 8:55 PM

Oldnuke on April 14, 2009 at 7:34 PM

Just got back, we had a corgi also, she died at a young age with a brain tumor, cried for days.
We had the corgi and sheltie…there wasn’t a mouse safe in the area.
That corgi, there is not another dog like them, absolutely fearless, and always “working”, no time to relax, gotta have a job.

I am a little more worried about dogs.

A survey by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta (“CDC”) concluded that dogs bite nearly 2% of the U.S. population — more than 4.7 million people annually. (Sacks JJ, Kresnow M, Houston B. Dog bites: how big a problem? Injury Prev 1996;2:52-4.)

Almost 800,000 bites per year — one out of every 6 — are serious enough to require medical attention. (Weiss HB, Friedman D, Coben JH. Incidence of dog bite injuries treated in emergency departments. JAMA 1998;279:51-53.)

Dog bites send nearly 368,000 victims to hospital emergency departments per year (1,008 per day). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nonfatal Dog Bite–Related Injuries Treated in Hospital Emergency Departments — United States, 2001, MMWR 2003;52:605-610. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report is published by the CDC.

Then we got princess (a silver and black cat) from my father after my Mom passed away and he couldn’t take her to my brothers house because of his Pit Bull. Buddy and her get along well. The most recent addition is Jack. A lab mix puppy my son called me at work asking if we would take him from a friend. He was a mess when we got him, under weight with hereditary mange. Wow, what a beautiful dog! I’ve never seen one of those.

JetBoy on April 14, 2009 at 9:59 PM

I like both dogs and cats, but I’ve always had cats and my sister was always allergic to dogs :(.

Ah well. My last cat we didn’t get out of a humane shelter. Mostly because of the fact that it never got the chance to get to one before we adopted it. My sister literally caught the cat as it was tossed out of the window of a speeding car. We’ve kept the kitten (now cat) ever since.

I’m not certain what her breed is, but she’s a beautiful All white hair/pink skinned, green eyed cat. She’s apparently not deaf either. We thought about breeding, but due to the uncertainty of her breed, and the fact that she’s already spayed, that’s been ruled out.

Actually, dear, sociopaths tend to make the greatest animal lovers. See Hitler: Animal Lover for a full explanation.

How about taking a look at Pope John Paul II instead of select information about Adolf Hiller? See my post above on Pope John Paul II. It is rather lengthy but I feel that if you really put you mind to it you could manage to read it and maybe even learn something, well maybe, not impossible.

You would then be able to compare and contrast it with some of the material written about Jeffrey Damler, such as “Serial killer Jeffrey Damler began by killing and torturing small animals before he moved on to young boys”.

Ouch!! You wound me, dear.

The Wall on April 14, 2009 at 9:25 PM

Don’t be silly. She didn’t wound you, she dispatched you. I also must say that I find your calling her “dear” to be rather more childishly condescending than at all “cutesy”. If you don’t watch out she may kick your ass again.

MB4 on April 14, 2009 at 10:09 PM

My parents first kitten was a 10 day old black DMH in ’90-all successive cats have been rescues.
As for me-Ziggy(gray/white tuxy age 17-lives with ex-husband),faux Russian Blue -Shady of blessed memory(sobs), and Sasha- an extremely over weight dilute tortie chubbese-I mean Siamese mix all were adopted from the South Suburban Humane Society.
Sheldon-our silver tipped tabby-was given to us three weeks after we lost Shady last year.
Whom ever started out with my girly girl(Sasha) had her declawed on all four paws.
I’d like to meet them some day…and “declaw” them.

annoyinglittletwerp on April 14, 2009 at 10:14 PM

Frankly, don’t trust guys who just have cats. It’s creepy, and it strikes me as being just one step closer to the sex change operation. That or killing a bunch of people.

I don’t hate cats, I’m allergic so I avoid them like the plague, but non-dog pets confuse me. Why would someone want a non-dog when you can have a dog?

galenrox on April 14, 2009 at 10:31 PM

galenrox on April 14, 2009 at 10:31 PM

Cats don’t bark and they don’t have to be boarded when you go away.

Y-not on April 14, 2009 at 10:54 PM

Unfortunately the Humane Society is also trying to stop all hunting in this country. There is no one who loves dogs more than I, but hunting dogs are for hunting and I don’t need someone trying to keep me from hunting deer or fishing. It’s the hunters and fishers who pay for the habitat improvement that makes it possible for these wild animals to live. They are the ones who brought back the turkey, the deer, the elk, the moose, ruffed grouse and improve trout habitat. Not one animal rights group cares enough to do anything about it. Hunters and fishers willing pay license fees, triple taxes on ammo and sporting goods and do it without complaining.

I will definitely look into those Meyer’s Parrots. Never heard of them before. How common are they in the states?

MadisonConservative on April 14, 2009 at 8:47 PM

hey Mad sorry about that, had archery practice.

Meyers Parrots are true parrots. They live up to 50+ years. They are very much like Senegal Parrots, but a tad smaller and are actually a sub species, much like African Greys and Timneh’s. All “baby” Meyers do not have the yellow cap on their head until they are 5 yrs old. They have a great disposition and are usually one of the happier parrots as they love human attention from everyone, not just their”owner” eve if they pair bond with you or your wife. They also like “company” so if you want to get them a buddy, a cockatiel works.

Meyers are pretty common around the States. I would suggest you look around and ask about notable breeders. If you go to an house whom breds, make sure the cages are CLEAN. No poop on bars and the paper is clean-ish. You have budgies, and they are messy… so devide that in half and that is a normal day for a really messy Meyers. Meyers do not like to be messy… they are actually pretty clean birds in comparison to most parrots. Male and Femals look the same and you will have to get them sexed. I do not recommend breeding unless you have the time to get up every 2 hours at night to syringe feed.

You don’t have to go back to school… all you have to do is read about birds, pay attention and ask LOTS of questions. I worked for a Veterinarian who’s specialty was Birds, I learned a lot from her. As I was 14 and it was my first “job”.

Dogs & cats teach us about unconditional love & compassion. We become better human beings because of them.

I didn’t think I could love Rush anymore than I already do.

redridinghood on April 15, 2009 at 12:16 AM

One of my cats, Irina, is a silver/white shelter cat I got when she was 3 years old…she’s completely frightened of strangers, which surprised me since she was nice enough to me when I visited the shelter to convince me to take her…and then once she figured out that she was with me to stay she became the most affectionate living being in the world. She’s still sometimes timid around me if she gets startled, and she never likes to be picked up…so I think she was mistreated somehow before she got to the shelter, but they probably never knew anything about it.

My other one, Sabine, is a black cat with a perfectly shaped white ‘bikini’ on just the right places on her belly. She was a stray kitten my cat-allergic coworker took in and asked me to keep. She is a total prankster, which would be fine if she didn’t always pick fights with Irina.

Dogs? Dogs are sluts, giving unconditional love to anyone who spouts baby-talk at them. If you can get a cat to love you, though, that’s a lot more rewarding.

I almost adopted a scarlet macaw last fall. In the late fall we had an ice storm that knocked our power out for 5 days and it was awful cold. I wondered how the bird would have fared in those conditions. We decided that a tropical bird would be something for when we have a generator or we move from this high tax state to a more sane southern one.

Ann NY on April 15, 2009 at 7:39 AM

I wonder if Ben Smith bothered to check and see when Rush actually recorded these PSA’s. I would imagine that they were developed and recorded long before anybody knew where Obama’s dog was coming from.

Also, if you bother to read the comments on the Politico sight you would probably agree that the DHS should be putting those people on a watch list rather than returning military vets.

When I had a power outage for 3 days due to a massive snow storm, I covered their cages with a heave blanket and if they were tame enough (breeder birds usually become wild when bred) I would actually bring the birds to bed with me. They would ALL snuggle together under the blanket and keep warm with me. I think only one had a accident, as they don’t poop when sleeping.

I had a Double Yellow Headed Amazon who actually slept with me at times. She was an oddity.

Exit question: Does this mean we’re the party of cat-lovers now? Awesome.

Oh God. NOT IN MY NAME!

=)

Dash on April 15, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Local human societies are worth giving your $ to.
The National one is not.
Rush made a valid point-Obama used his offhanded promise to entice emotion in voters-which he now did not keep-like so many of his other promises.
This is the real issue-the guy LIES to voters & then does whatever the hell he wants to later bcs he knows the media won’t take him to task for it.
I am also extremely alarmed at how Americans put animals on an equal pedestal with humans.
Don’t get me wrong-I love ALL of my animals:
3 dogs
20+ barn cats
1 house cat (he’s my baby that I saved before his eyes were open-mommy barn kitty died, but love the dogs more)
15 horses
lots of cows (& calves now that we are calving)
I cry when we have to kill something to ease it’s suffering.
I cry when we can’t save a baby calf because it’s born in a freaking snow storm.
I cry when they die of pneumonia.
I cry when their stupid mothers have them near the riverbank & they fall off & drown while trying to get up for the 1st time.
I cry when a horse dies.
I cry when we have to shoot a horse bcs it got in a bad accident.
But these animals, as much as I love them, do not replace a human.
I have eaten my ‘pets’ (bottle-fed beef steers etc.) & they had names & everything.
I would eat my dogs if I had to, but that’s a last resort.
This horse slaughter ban is stupid.
Many animal activists have no idea how their activities actually harm the animals they’re trying to save.
People need to wake up & get real.

Badger40 on April 15, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Thank you Badger. The National group of the Humane Society does not even run an animal shelter. All they do is raise money to harass purebred breeders (see the article on Biden’s breeder) by going to legislatures throughout the country trying to give animals “rights” so that the owners have their rights taken away. They do this in the name of getting rid of puppy mills but their end game is to destroy all pure breed breeders.

Ricki on April 15, 2009 at 12:37 PM

Yes, I have always found cats to be the “conservative” pet.
They are extremely individualistic, self-reliant and anti-authority.

Dogs are like welfare recipicents or Democrats. They wouldn’t know what do to do without guidance from their owner (or Big Government), obey commands like a slave.

Saw an interesting documentary on the History Channel called “Population 0 – Life after People”. One tidbit I found telling was this : If people were gone, 90%+ of all dogs would die within months. Cats, on the other hand, would thrive and be self-reliant.

Norwegian on April 15, 2009 at 1:06 PM

Ricki on April 15, 2009 at 12:37 PM

They are succeeding in doing this to the horse industry.
But MT & ND are fighting back by passing legislation (MT did already) to build a horse slaughter facility.
Shutting down the horse slaughter plants in TX & IL have done nothing to help horses.
There are some horses that must be put down. They are NOT pets. They are large animals & as much as I love my horses, there are some that should go to slaughter. There is nothing wrong with people eating horse meat & we have no right to tell people they can’t.
Most breeders do not breed indiscriminately. Crap happens & they have to have a place to go with their unwanted, crippled (not by disease) etc horses.
The critters can live over 30yrs.
Just research how many ‘wild’ horses your govt has to take care of.
You’ll change your mind if you really knew the situation.

Badger40 on April 15, 2009 at 1:16 PM

Norwegian on April 15, 2009 at 1:06 PM

Guess that doesn’t include my blue heelers.
They live like wild animals. They roam all over the ranch, but get fed dog food & get lots of love & attention.
They do NOT come in the house (except for the old blind one at night-he barks at everything bcs he can’t see & no one gets any sleep if he doesn’t come inside!).
Sometimes they hunt for tasty treats bcs it’s a damned sight better than dog food!

The Humane Society of the United States is not affilated with your local Humane Society.

The HSUS is just like PETA, HSUS devoted less than 4 percent of its massive $91.5 million budget to hands-on dog and cat shelters in 2007.
