American Legion to Napolitano: Apologize

posted at 12:55 pm on April 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Of all the smears listed in the new DHS warning about “right-wing extremism,” none are more dastardly and despicable than the insinuation that returning military veterans represent a security threat to the nation they willingly served. The Commander of the American Legion has sent the following letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano explaining to her that military veterans are not the enemy:

Secretary Janet Napolitano
Department of Homeland Security
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Washington, DC 20528

April 13, 2009

Dear Secretary Napolitano,

On behalf of the 2.6 million-member American Legion, I am stating my concern about your April 7 report, “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence and Recruitment.”

First, I want to assure you that The American Legion has long shared your concern about white supremacist and anti-government groups. In 1923, when the Ku Klux Klan still yielded unspeakable influence in this country, The American Legion passed Resolution 407. It resolved, in part, “…we consider any individual, group of individuals or organizations, which creates, or fosters racial, religious or class strife among our people, or which takes into their own hands the enforcement of law, determination of guilt, or infliction of punishment, to be un-American, a menace to our liberties, and destructive to our fundamental law…”

The best that I can say about your recent report is that it is incomplete. The report states, without any statistical evidence, “The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.”

The American Legion is well aware and horrified at the pain inflicted during the Oklahoma City bombing, but Timothy McVeigh was only one of more than 42 million veterans who have worn this nation’s uniform during wartime. To continue to use McVeigh as an example of the stereotypical “disgruntled military veteran” is as unfair as using Osama bin Laden as the sole example of Islam.

Your report states that “Rightwing extremists were concerned during the 1990s with the perception that illegal immigrants were taking away American jobs through their willingness to work at significantly lower wages.” Secretary Napolitano, this is more than a perception to those who have lost their job. Would you categorize union members as “Right Wing extremists”?

In spite of this incomplete, and, I fear, politically-biased report, The American Legion and the Department of Homeland Security share many common and crucial interests, such as the Citizen Corps and disaster preparedness. Since you are a graduate of New Mexico Girls State, I trust that you are very familiar with The American Legion. I would be happy to meet with you at a time of mutual convenience to discuss issues such as border security and the war on terrorism. I think it is important for all of us to remember that Americans are not the enemy. The terrorists are.

Sincerely,

David K. Rehbein
National Commander
The American Legion

We can pray that the SCOTUS will eventually do their job, take one of the eligibility cases, and rule that anyone who ever holds citizenship in another country is no longer ‘natural-born’ and ineligible to become President – as was clearly the Founders’ intent (seeing that there were no “dual citizens” back then).

Del Dolemonte on April 14, 2009 at 1:42 PM

Well, if you are going to smear the next generation of veterans (like the left did with the guys and gals from Vietnam) ya gotta start somewhere.

Actually, this fits right into the left’s worldview – veterans are nothing more than victims, who will explode into a violent rage unless they are really controlled by a right-wing former general (played by Donald Sutherland or Ed Asner) with the goal of destroying the constitution and barring anyone from using hybrid cars, installing wind turbines on their garage, or getting abortions.

Or something like that.

Glad my taxes went to help pay for the high-quality piece of intelligence analysis.

First, Mr. Pantywaist wanted veterans to pay for their own health care after

being wounded in battle………..

……. then their absentee ballots were lost in the mail.

Now he wants them “watched” when they return home after serving their country…………….

Is it me, or do I see a pattern here?

Seven Percent Solution on April 14, 2009 at 1:04 PM

It is the pattern of communism. Communists always identify a group or groups for elimination from the body politic.

The communist in chief has already identified veterans and senior citizens for elimination via restrictions on medical care. This accomplishes one crucial thing that over time lowers the social security debt load. It shortens the lives of senior citizens by rationing healthcare; senior citizens take advantage of their health benefits to lead longer, more productive lives, but they collect more SSI benefits than they paid into the system. Rationing health care will shorten their lives and lessen the need for SSI payments. It is the same thing with veterans.

Teenagers in America have also been singled out for elimination from the body politic by turning them into, for lack of a better term, brownshirts.

Now, it is time to marginalize the returning veterans in the body politic with the so-called threat from returning veterans.

I’m 50, and it is the first time I ever feared for the safety of the American way of life! All this time we were told it would be the Russians or Communist Chinese that would attack America, never once did I think it would be the democratic party. I guess the Civil War’s back on and this time the South is attempting to preserve the Union!

The other thing Napolitano has managed to do with this report is eliminate within 48 hours any pro-military good will Obama might have gotten from the Navy SEALs takedown of the three pirates and the hostage rescue (Not that Obama did all that much, but he did allow the takedown to occur and the big media was treating it like FDR allowing the Normandy invasion to take place).

By having the DHS report go so far over towards the “crazy veteran” stereotype the left loved in the wake of Vietnam, she overshot her target of conservative groups, talk radio and Fox News and got the American Legion involved in the fracas. The Adminitration might have told Michelle, Rush, Sean and any other high-profile people on the right to pound sand if they didn’t like the report, but odds are they’re not going to publicly pick a fight with the Legion over it. That doesn’t mean they’re going to change their stance in private, but Napolitano gave the game away that this is what they really think about returning military veterans.

At the time the FBI investigated eyewitness accounts of a “John Doe” seen with McVeigh who had a “dark, Middle Eastern complexion.” McVeigh accomplice Terry Nichols happened to be in Cebu City in the Phillipines at the same time as Ramzi Yousef. And Nichols bomb making suddenly improved after this trip.

Why can’t the Supreme Court initiate a look at the programs and executive orders, etc. and rule on their constitutionality. If they can’t, then is there a way that “we the people” can get one started. The Tea Parties are not only about taxes but the loss of individual freedoms and the spending that will make us less than a third world country. Don’t let anyone D or R define what the Tea Parties mean. Don’t let any politicians use the Parties to spin and get air time. They are the problem and should be shoved to the side lines where they can listen, hopefully, to the people’s complaints. Maybe, soon all the Parties held on the 15th can be combined into one big one in DC to really drive home the point.

Oh Man,
.
I hate to go against the herd here, but Obambi is painting the correct enemy. Ex-military have seen Obambi’s ilk close up, even torn down his statues. If it comes to shooting GS-7 and above, trained snipers are going to be the Gov’s worst nightmare. Those who have taken the oath to “Uphold and Defend” ARE essentially against this Administration. Though the civilians will do their part, if there is to be “Quiet War” between the White and the Red, it may well be the Military that have to lead us to it.
.
With that in mind, gun seizures are coming. I figure Obambi’s administration loses say, 40 of his violent “Youth” and 7 or 8 Senators and Congressmen in maybe a 50 separate attacks and it is goodbye First and Second Amendment. Already I have heard calls for restricting guns just from regular shooting crimes by madmen, people already not eligible to own guns. If Obambi is burying officials (with every death a three day, MSM panting, full State Funeral, with the usual speeches and calls for gun control) it will only take a limited number of these to roll a lot of the public into fear and compliance.

“NAPOLITANO and the LEFT BABYBOOMERS”
At this moment there is a lot of discussion going on about the present credit crisis and how to solve it. World leaders, problem analysists and plans are ruling the daily news. Let’s raise up the retirement age to 67, freeze pensions for future generations and cut tax deductions, tearing down present amenities… Veterans, who defended the free world that are now suddenly bombed to be enemy number one………………………
Bad organization of youth guiding, high unemployment. This all seem to have to do less with each other, but there is one binding factor” The Left Baby Boomers”. The generation that has been in charge for the past 40 years, Not only in the USA, but also other countries in the world.
These Baby Boomers were still able to go to college for free, could buy a house and have the full profit of it. They profited from all that was accomplished by their former generations. (veterans). They are still able to pay for the gas of their fat SUV’s, giving you that dirty look, when you found that open parking spot in the Wal Mart parking lot before they did. They started the sexual revolution, caused future generations to be unfertile, the pill !
These Baby Boomers were too lazy, had “high standards”, didn’t want to do the dirty jobs any longer bringing in illegal immigrants to do these dirty jobs for them.
Left Baby Boomers that “built up” this economy creating the illusion of getting rich with empty stock market promises and predictions. They invented the theory of getting rich by borrowing money and using this money to borrow even more, based on empty values. The dinosaurs, who are now retiring with big bonuses after bringing down and robbing the markets, causing the present generation to be in this situation. They are the ones sitting back and laughing at us!!! Maybe that is the very inconvenient truth?

I am myself a retired Military Member and believe that this is why they disallowed our absentee ballots during certain contested elections. The Liberals have started a war against Conservatives, they want individuals with combat skills contained and marginalized. They believe that they now own the playground because of the last election and can take away our Constitutional rights. max1 on April 14, 2009 at 1:42 PM

Johnny come lately will be out, defending Janet Napolitano tomorrow. Count on it.

C’mon Folks surely you are misunderstanding The Chicago Jesus. He would not do nothing against the Veterans. Seems like I remember something about making veterans pay for their medical benifits a month or so ago!! Anyone who thinks Der Leader is for the military is both blind and delusional.

Yeah, gotta watch out for those psycho, mouth-frothing Rambos.

The left sure does hate veterans. And pretty much anyone who doesn’t worship liberal doctrine like a zombie.

This DHS report is the fruit of liberal insecurity, bigotry and paranoia, and is a greater threat to our constitutional democracy than the groups it targets. This report identifies and labels millions of Americans as potential threats to national security because we differ with the Democratic Party’s platform, we own guns, or we are veterans. It is a disgrace requiring more than an apology.

Congress should hold hearings into who and why DHS labeled millions of Americans, and especially veterans, as potential threats. The administration should rebuke this report and fire those responsible for it. And since neither is going to happen, this DHS report should be one of the many reasons that Americans fire this liberal Congress in 2010 and the Obama administration in 2012.

All I can say is I live in San Antonio and I am going down EARLY to get a good spot for the Tea Party. My sign says “Eat pork, don’t spend it” so when they show pictures of us being arrested for exercising our constitutional right of free speech look for the little mom is is TIRED of her elected officials (both parties, thank you very much) spending her kids future.

And I agree with PappaMac, DHS should be worrying about cijuad juarez, not us peaceful citizens. As daughter of a WWII vet, cousin to several viet nam and gulf war vets, and sis to gulf war vet, this “report” just puts me at a slow burn.

What we need is more gays in the American Legion. That would solve this problem.

I haven’t read this whole thing yet,,, but anybody find the section expressing alarm and caution over associations to radicals who have bombed government buildings,, like say,, oh the Pentagon??? I heard the murderer Timothy McVeigh was mentioned,,, anyone read anything about Bill Ayers???
I’m sure it’s gotta be there some where.
Any mention about college professors who pose with AK-47′s and rant about America deserving 911??
If you find that section,, hey please post it!!

Remember the National Intelligence Estimate where three ratbags had final say on the format. Three ratbags who force a change in US govt. policy.

Just as with the NIE we found out who had final say, we need to know who wrote the report. It looks as if it might have been prepared by consultants.

Dear Secretary Napolitano,

I realize, of course, that you are doing your best to serve and protect The State, so I wish to bring to your attention the fact that Theodore John Kaczynski, the Unabomber, went to Harvard and taught at Berkly, so I feel that prudence requires the immediate preventative incarceration of all Ivy League students, alumni and professors. I also feel that Bill Ayers and Reverend Jeremy Wright both constitute a clear and present danger to themselves as well as to many others and should be, at the least, watched very closely. I am sure that you agree.

Sincerely,

Kiss My Ass

Well this report fits nicely in with the one Missouri police conducted identify Ran Paul, Bob Barr and to a certain extent Gov. Palin as right-wingers.

Ridiculous demagoguery from the Obama administration.

It’s amazing how many on this site were rooting this Draconian legislation on when it was being presented.

What if their whole plan in releasing this report is to make people angry right before the teaparties? People get angry, you got ACORN agents in the crowd that do a little provoking, you get a little fighting going on, and the government has the perfect excuse to marginalize the teaparties and ban personal firearms for the public good.
Sound farfetched?

gordo on April 14, 2009 at 7:29 PM

If I were to be mounting Napolitano’s defense, I would point out that SOME returning veterans are INDEED threats, for it must be noted that McVeigh’s military experience coupled with his biases helped cumulate in Oklahoma City, and that various swine such as the infamous George Blake did indeed become radicalized against their country in combat (granted, Blake was British, but he was not unprecedented, even in the US).

However, this being said, I doubt Napolitano is sincerely concerned in the VERY LEAST about the actual threat. If she were, would she not be trying to get the individuals help?

This is only about politics, and DAMN all else.

Sickening.
