American Legion to Napolitano: Apologize

posted at 12:55 pm on April 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Of all the smears listed in the new DHS warning about “right-wing extremism,” none are more dastardly and despicable than the insinuation that returning military veterans represent a security threat to the nation they willingly served. The Commander of the American Legion has sent the following letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano explaining to her that military veterans are not the enemy:

Secretary Janet Napolitano
Department of Homeland Security
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Washington, DC 20528

April 13, 2009

Dear Secretary Napolitano,

On behalf of the 2.6 million-member American Legion, I am stating my concern about your April 7 report, “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence and Recruitment.”

First, I want to assure you that The American Legion has long shared your concern about white supremacist and anti-government groups. In 1923, when the Ku Klux Klan still yielded unspeakable influence in this country, The American Legion passed Resolution 407. It resolved, in part, “…we consider any individual, group of individuals or organizations, which creates, or fosters racial, religious or class strife among our people, or which takes into their own hands the enforcement of law, determination of guilt, or infliction of punishment, to be un-American, a menace to our liberties, and destructive to our fundamental law…”

The best that I can say about your recent report is that it is incomplete. The report states, without any statistical evidence, “The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.”

The American Legion is well aware and horrified at the pain inflicted during the Oklahoma City bombing, but Timothy McVeigh was only one of more than 42 million veterans who have worn this nation’s uniform during wartime. To continue to use McVeigh as an example of the stereotypical “disgruntled military veteran” is as unfair as using Osama bin Laden as the sole example of Islam.

Your report states that “Rightwing extremists were concerned during the 1990s with the perception that illegal immigrants were taking away American jobs through their willingness to work at significantly lower wages.” Secretary Napolitano, this is more than a perception to those who have lost their job. Would you categorize union members as “Right Wing extremists”?

In spite of this incomplete, and, I fear, politically-biased report, The American Legion and the Department of Homeland Security share many common and crucial interests, such as the Citizen Corps and disaster preparedness. Since you are a graduate of New Mexico Girls State, I trust that you are very familiar with The American Legion. I would be happy to meet with you at a time of mutual convenience to discuss issues such as border security and the war on terrorism. I think it is important for all of us to remember that Americans are not the enemy. The terrorists are.

Sincerely,

David K. Rehbein
National Commander
The American Legion

The Left has controlled the media for so long they must have thought since people never said anything before they could go right on with their liberal fantasies of reality when they actually had power. You have to actually prove stuff now liberals, quoting a single case and some stats might cut it for a news report but it’s takes a bit more than that when you actually expect people to agree with you.

They want a society of informers. A society where Americans question each other, but not the State.

The enemy of Socialism – is Americans.

First, Mr. Pantywaist wanted veterans to pay for their own health care after being wounded in battle………..

……. then their absentee ballots were lost in the mail.

Now he wants them “watched” when they return home after serving their country…………….

Is it me, or do I see a pattern here?

Since you are a graduate of New Mexico Girls State, I trust that you are very familiar with The American Legion.

Ouch. This guy did some research. This is a great program that the state American Legion chapters operate in many states for a week each summer for high school boys and girls. My dad was selected to represent his high school in California in the late 1940s. And I was selected to represent my high school in Ohio in the late 1970s. It was a great experience.

Anyway, it’s a great dig at this moron. And shame on her for dissing veterans. They do little, if any, wrong in my book.

I hope there is tremendous fallout for her and the Obama administration over this.

It was in the news this week that Penn State had, as part of some HR or faculty exercise, a fictionalized scenario dealing with a “veteran” who apparently couldn’t deal with the fact that he was underperforming academically and the faculty member was worried about said veteran becoming violent.

What is going on here? First Missouri’s state government releases a report labeling people who affiliate with 3rd party groups like the Libertarian Party, and Rep Ron Paul, could be militia members and dangerous to the country. Now we have the federal government saying the same thing, but in much broader terms.

This is all very strange to me. Need more information.

Weebork on April 14, 2009 at 1:13 PM

Umbama’s Ministry of Distancing is on overdrive.

They have no problems calling US veterans ‘terrorists’. It’s the poor misunderstood jihadis who are ‘purveyors of man-made disasters.’

What happened to our country?

Urban Infidel on April 14, 2009 at 1:13 PM

WTG, American Legion!

I hate to think that this is how our security is being handled these days. I suppose it’s possible that there are specific examples that go uncited in this document, but it seems more likely that it’s build upon assumptions and speculation. Take this example:

The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks

Monkeys COULD fly out of my butt, too. But probably won’t. Further, are they saying new firarms restrictions result in more guns in the hands of “extremists”? That’s almost an NRA point of view. DHS is getting closed to being labelled as a right wing extremist if they continue along that line of thinking.

hawksruleva on April 14, 2009 at 1:13 PM

(To be honest if the GOP held 46 or 47 senate seats The 46 might never have been created) But now I find out that a baseless stereotype of veterans is being peddled by the DHS and that political opposition is equated with domestic terrorism. Napolitano is incapable of understanding this. She is the one who wants to forego the use of the words terrorism and terrorist for the kinder, gentler euphemisms ‘man-caused disaster’ and, I guess ‘man-cause of disaster’. See, in the vision of those who come up with such newspeak absurdities, there is no difference between a crazy lone gunman who shoots up a Macdonalds, a train that derails because of negligence on the part of the engineer, or Mohammed Atta.
