Video: The surprisingly obligatory “beta female not so beta” post

Multiple requests coming in for this one, and no wonder: It was all over YouTube this morning. Take a frumpy middle-aged woman with caterpillar eyebrows and a golden voice, toss her into the mix in Britain’s version of “American Idol,” shake well, and voila. A viral jackpot.

You just know she’s going to get bounced in the next round for some English version of Sanjaya.

Blowback

She is good. I imagine the nay-sayers will well announce their concert soon, so we can be AMAZED by how talented they are.

Of course their idea of a “good” singer would be? I might agree, or I might just think of them as one more noise maker that plugs up the airways.

Noelie on April 13, 2009 at 10:17 PM

Please do not compare her to Paul Potts . . . I mean that is really just not a good comparison.

Ingenue on April 13, 2009 at 10:18 PM

That was the finest example of obliterating expectations that I’ve seen in a long long time.

It’s the old adage: Don’t judge a book by the cover.

You owe me a new keyboard.

Stunning voice! And kudos to her for never giving up on her dream to sing in front of a large audience! Miracles do happen, every day, if we but learn to recognize them all around us.

KendraWilder on April 13, 2009 at 10:34 PM

Wonderful. absolutely wonderful.

Britain’s version of “American Idol,”

AllahP, you really don’t know your reality TV, do you? LOL, this show is “Britain’s Got Talent” of which the American spin-off is not “American Idol”, but rather “America’s Got Talent” (the judges were Sharon Osbourne and David Hasselhoff). “American Idol” is the spin-off of the original British show called “Pop Idol”. Sheesh, Allah, get with the times! ;)

She has a lovely voice and she deserves to to get a makeover. I hope Britain’s Got Talent does style consultants like American Idol does for its contestants. It always amazes me how great AI makes the singers look.

Well done CP, a lot of us wanted to write that. It’s sickening how we’re all supposed to conform to some insipid standard set by 20-year-olds, even when we’re not.

Fortunata on April 13, 2009 at 9:35 PM

What you said!

Thank you for saying it, too.

kakypat on April 13, 2009 at 9:37 PM

Thanks, you guys.

She’s not super duper awesome but she’s pretty good. She’s probably never had training and she definitely has the voice for it. Plus the song might not have been the best for her.

Curse you bloody cynical pessimists, must you ruin everything?

Kronos on April 13, 2009 at 9:55 PM

Don’t let it bother you. Everybody thinks they’re an expert when it comes to a thing like this.

She is actually very good, and the song was an excellent selection for her stylistically – and she’s good enough to pursue a career, and I hope she does. You are absolutely correct about her nerves, but she did a fine job of covering that, as well.

This is a great story. God bless her. I hope the panel of judges and the people in the audience learned something. There was obviously a great deal of room for growth there.

Wax her brows, cut and color her hair, give her an hour with a professional makeup artist, and she would look like a different person.

Hope he gives her a sweet deal, she deserves it.

Makes my night. :)

This was awesome!!! She was good. I can imagine the shock!!!!!!!!!!! A standing O was definitely in order for her.

Thanks for posting this AP.
That was terrific.
What a magnificent performance.

Awesome lady! Hotter than a million spray tanned blonde bimbos with fake tits. That’s a real woman.

Dr. Manhattan on April 14, 2009 at 12:07 AM

Skipped over this thread several times tonight. I can’t believe I almost passed it up.

I never thought the old adage, “You can’t judge a book by it’s cover”, could make me misty-eyed. This did.

How can someone have all that talent and no one find out until they were 47?

Thanks for a remarkable video Allah.

hawkdriver on April 14, 2009 at 12:07 AM

OMG. I can not believe what I just heard

* recalibrates ears *

Yup. I’m blown away. Utterly demolished.

WOW!!!! I had to watch 3 times. This made my night. Thank you for posting this.

jlemieu1 on April 14, 2009 at 12:14 AM

I have watched this 15 times now. This was a complete breath of fresh air for me. As soon as she starts singing, a big happy smile comes onto my face, and this old curmudeon’s heart melts. Beautiful voice….. Words are failing me to describe how this makes me feel.

It takes a hell of a lot to get Simon looking that enchanted with someone. Gorgeous voice.

Then again, I remember being blown away by Sanjaya’s audition (as was Simon) before he turned into a weird joke.

Proof that beautiful is not monopolized by the eyes.
Inspirational.

Some dream forever, but never move beyond the mind’s images.

Some follow their dreams, but fail. But they tried.

Then there are those whose dream becomes a tangible, palpable reality.

That inspiring video shows a person whose personal achievement of a long held dream will burn within her forever. If she advances no further probably matters less to her than the fact that she reached out and touched her dream. No one can take that from her.

I hope this is legitimate and not some stunt.

She seems quite sweet and is very special.

SilverStar830 on April 14, 2009 at 1:48 AM

In what way might it be a stunt? You’re the second person who’s suggested that, and I don’t know why it’s so unbelievable that she’s just a person who can sing, but doesn’t happen to look like Beyonce Knowles or something.

Not trying to bust your chops. I just don’t get it.

capitalist piglet on April 14, 2009 at 2:01 AM

Remember in vaudeville days of yore, many of the greats were not physically attractive. Fanny Bryce, Sophie Tucker, Ethel Merman to name a few had faces that to many were clock stoppers. But when they sang, they could hold an audience spellbound and be heard in the back of theaters without using mikes.

Same with many opera stars during the golden years of opera. Stout, stocky, graceful as oxen — but could they sing? You bet.

It is good to see that even today, talent can conquer.

In a nutshell, and I’m just guessing at why people are suggesting that, but because it’s British television. That being said the idea had not popped into my mind until someone else suggested it; besides, it seems like a pretty impossible stunt to… if not pull off, but to keep going

Reaps on April 14, 2009 at 4:30 AM

I think she’s absolutely real, and absolutely wonderful.

capitalist piglet on April 14, 2009 at 4:50 AM

It is sad but true that we judge too much on appearance. It was enjoyable to watch those judgments melt away as soon as she began to sing. The cheers did make it hard to hear the song in it’s entirety. I want to hear more.

SKYFOX on April 14, 2009 at 8:03 AM

She’s definitely good enough for a stage career. Make a great player for a feature role of that woman of a certain age. Not everyone has to play the ingenue.

btw, Ethel Merman wasn’t always old.

Strick on April 14, 2009 at 8:38 AM

Pop music is going down the toilet because only good looking people can make it. It was not that way 30+ years ago and that is a big reason why pop music was so much better back then. It makes me sad.

Bravo!

Joe Caps on April 14, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Yeah, she’s really not. She’s much better than she looks, but that’s all.

Allahpundit on April 13, 2009 at 8:14 PM

Good try on trying to bring her down…better listen again, better speakers, or a better platform to listen.
She was right on pitch…I don’t know what her formal training, if any, but a couple of weeks in a studio and she is a star.
Beautiful voice.

right2bright on April 14, 2009 at 9:50 AM

Loved it! I hope someone in the music industry sees her talent and recruits her, whether she wins this one or not.

Allah, just go suck a lemon… or something…

Allahpundit on April 13, 2009 at 8:14 PM

Okay Slick, what have you got going for you besides a small mind and NO talent what so ever?

Post some of your great musical work here so I can take a listen to your greatness. You want to talk the talk, now walk the walk. You remind me of all the music critics I have ever read, ignorant and no talent what so ever but you can trash others for what you can not do. Takes a pretty small person to do that but I’m calling you out, post something and impress me! I won’t be holding my breath on that ever happening in my life time.

This post is also for ALL you other bottom feeders here that made fun of this lady.

Old Hippie Vet on April 14, 2009 at 4:43 PM

I admire her pluck. Whatever the hell that means. Cheerio!

jimboslice on April 14, 2009 at 7:16 PM

Listened for the upteenth time! Her voice is celestrial to me and I smile and tears fall at the same time. I hope her future is filled with music to sing to us. Gifts are sent in many packages!

Coastal Paradise on April 14, 2009 at 7:56 PM

I love this sort of thing. Nothing like seeing the judges and crowd come to their conclusion before the singing starts, only to watch their stunned reactions.

It was the same way on the American version with Terry Fator, who ultimately won.

eaglescout1998 on April 16, 2009 at 11:09 AM

Pop music is going down the toilet because only good looking people can make it.

It’s not just that. Pop music is going down the toilet because emphasis has been placed more on rhythm and beat and less on music and lyric. If you strip away all the grooves from that “If You Seek Amy” song, all that remains is a vapid piece of lyric and a virtually non-existent melody.

These days, of course, no one writes their own music; they just sample from someone else.
