One lets you protect your family, the other lets Zero pose.

It will take a much more aggressive response to change their thinking from “adjust our tactics” to “piracy is suicide, so let’s try something else.” This is especially true if they watch the global news networks, or have any understanding of American politics. For the moment, I think the pirates still like their odds.

Obama doesn’t have the guts to ban piracy and make it stick.

But he does feel that he has the wisdom and compassion to resolve the situation. And he will. With American dollars.

Obama will do a pirate bailout, addressing the root causes of piracy and poverty and offering them hope and change, and give them lots of our money.

This is Jizya, the Islamic tribute money paid by dhimmis to retain their right to live in humiliation under their betters.

The Barbary Pirates demanded tribute, and got so swacked by Jefferson that we haven’t seen them for over 200 years. We didn’t pay tribute then, but we will now. I predicted this yesterday and that very evening saw glimmers of this in statements from the Administration.

Obama was already involved in a global poverty tax on the American people before he was elected. He will try to do it, and he will start with the poor people of Somalia and their pirates.

Therefore, we shall see more barbarism committed against Americans as those would be aggressor nations discover it pays to poke the giant in the eye.

It is just politics. I actually saw some idiot from WaPo comparing this to Katrina…and making a point of how involved Obama was vs. Bush.

The truth is it took longer to get that Captain free than it did to get stranded people out of New Orleans. In this incident 5 days is but a blink of an eye, but after a Category 5 hurricane demolishes the Gulf Coast…five days is plenty of time to get things in shape.

So yeah, I think Obama is getting way more credit than he deserves on this. He did not take any risk here, the Commander and the Seals took the risk. Obama just took the credit.

Not sure if the program was ended by Obama, the DD-1000 surely was. There is a less sexy version of a littoral patrol craft under development that is similar in mission to the USS Independence but a lot fewer bells and whistles.

What made the Independence so right for th task was its speed and maneuverability, its stealth capability and the modular armament packaging written into the design. The aft second deck had space for conex-like containers holding supplies, equipment, electronics, weapons and even personnel that could be exchanged out at sea to meet different scenarios.

Still think it is one hell of an evil looking ship though…something that would strike fear into a wehole lot of folks out there. Imagine being a small pirate craft and have this thing heave to right off your beam and you never heard it coming?

The Wrath of the Space Sailors…yeah.

Actually, there was a bit of a problem with General Dynamics and Lockheed ( if memory serves) and only one of these was accepted by the Navy, for testing, and three others are in limbo right now…but the technology is being shopped around…and a builder to finish the other three is being sought.

What is the Chief Engineer referencing–hiding the crew in ovens, or stashing dead bodies in the ovens during the pirate attack? When all the dust settles, what a story! We’d rather wait to hear it from those involved rather than from a media member.

That’s the interview I saw yesterday on Fox live after the crew got settled in port. I think his reference to dead bodies stashed in ovens was about dead tired and hiding in the ovens. Does anybody remember the report that the fighting was ongoing right after the report that the ship was captured? That’s what the Chief is referring to. They fought them off evidently in waves with some of the crew trying to get rest. Kind of like Indians attacks in the old west!

Yep, it’s going to be interesting to hear the details. Maybe Hollywood will finally make a positive movie about our military now that their guy is in the WH.

Yeah there was a lot of stupidity involved in the LCS and DD-1000. And now, we’ve sunk a butt-ton of money into programs that will never go to sea. The story with the F-22 is similar. I’m not sure who is more to blame, Congress or the contractors, but my gut tells me they both made a lot of money out of the deal at our expense – with nothing to show for it, at the end of the day.

Long-term military procurement strategies almost seem senseless to me at this point. In the near-term, I expect we’ll be ok, but at some point this type of buffoonery will catch us with our pants down.

The U.S.S. Independence is the first of a projected fleet of between 50 and 100 littoral combat ships (LCSs) the US Navy will be adding to their fleet over the coming years. Built on a well-proven Australian-designed trimaran platform from Austal, the LCS is fast, stealthy and well suited to a range of offshore combat support missions.

The rear deck is suitable for two Seahawk helicopters, and can also support Harrier jump-jets if necessary. Onboard weaponry includes a 57mm Bofors gun, four .50 caliber guns, chaff, missile and torpedo decoy launchers, an 11-missile SeaRAM launcher, 8 Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles, mine detection and towed array sonar units, and a vertical launching system for ASROC-style surface missiles or Evolved Sea Sparrow type missile defenses.

The U.S.S. Independence was built and delivered by General Dynamics, as part of a four-ship evaluation plan. Two were to be built by General Dynamics, two by Lockheed Martin, and the designs were to be evaluated to determine the superior design. Sadly, cost blowouts by both General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin have seen the remaining three evaluation ships canceled and the Navy is putting together a new bidding program to have the remaining three evaluation ships contracted and built.

So my fear is that Obama will do something halfway or nothing at all. And frankly, I prefer the nothing at all to any action that has no firm resolution.

Status quo, swatting flies with hammers in lifeboats is a lot better than saying we are going to swat them on land, and then not carrying through with it.

While Obama refrained from public assessment, I was glad that he at least was not saying the wrong thing. I agree with your assessment. It may well be better to leave well enough along for the moment than to go off half-cocked. Whatever else, NOT ANOTHER BLACK HAWK DOWN. Clinton did a blast job on their shore before departure, leaving the pirates laughing as our ships departed. So, if Obama wants anyone to respect him, as no one does now, he would do well to strongly consider those “contingency plans” he re-named on file at the Pentagon, and get over his stupid attempt to mask his ineptitude through horrible micromanagement of those who serve our Constitution, The Office of The President and our beloved nation.
