Meghan McCain: We need a GOP that supports gay marriage

posted at 9:25 pm on April 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

I thought we already had one. Remember this?

Granted, it was skewed by Politico’s link, but not by that much. Meggie Mac, er, weighs in:

I am a woman who despises labels and boxes and stereotypes. Recently, I seemed to have rocked a few individuals within my party by saying that I am a pro-life, pro-gay-marriage Republican. So if anyone is still confused, let me spell it out for you. I believe life begins at conception and I believe that people who fall in love should have the option to get married. Lest we forget, our founding document, the Declaration of Independence, grants the same rights to everyone in this country—“All men are created equal.” If you think certain rights should not apply to certain people, then you are saying those people are not equal. People may always have a difference of opinion on certain lifestyles, but championing a position that wants to treat people unequally isn’t just un-Republican. At its fundamental core, it’s un-American.

At the end of the day, speaking at the Log Cabin Republicans’ convention isn’t just about reaching out to the gay community—although I believe doing so is vital to the future success of the party. It’s also about reaching a wider base and redefining what it means to be Republican, and leaving labels, stereotypes, and negativity by the wayside.

Whiter “negativity”?

I think it’s cute that by embracing gay marriage the media caricature of republicans as evil or buffoons will end…

The dems control everything, and have scandal after scandal and yet Comedy Central and MSNBC and CNN rail for hours at Eric Cantor for going to a Britney Spears concert.

But yeah, let’s accept gay marraige to “improve our image”.

Next step: arresting ministers for “gay hate speech!”

That’s an idiotic argument at heart. Obviously I’m not comparing them to gay Americans, but sex offenders don’t have the right to hang out on playgrounds or just disappear off the radar. And I wasn’t aware that marriage was a right.

Whenever Meghan McCain talks about doing things to make the GOP successful, the things she mentions always seem to be stuff that conforms with Meghan McCain’s views.

I’m sure that’s just a coincidence.

Simply a false arguement. Marriage is heterosexual. Let the gays make up their own coupling thingy that’s similar if they want but you can’t just change the definition of MARRIAGE on the whim of today’s trendy lifestyles.

Our civilization is dying because too few stand up for what is really right and pretend that civilization is advancing–instead of tailspinning into a blazing crash.

All this proves is that MeghAn McCain is poorly trained in history or religion. Our founding documents don’t say everything everyone wants to do is equally good for our society.

And no…civil unions do not at present do that.

Very, very sad.

JetBoy on April 13, 2009 at 9:39 PM

AP, why don’t you save everyone alot of time and just let McCain take your spot so she could just post her stuff directly to this site. It will be a more efficient way of driving it into the ground. With you here, it is slow and painful because people keep hoping you are going to come out of your stupor. Personally I think you sucked from the start.

As for Meghan’s GOP, it is not even the GOP. She is a liberal Democrat who just wants the GOP to become liberal thereby eliminating the 2 party system. Why you give voice to this moron constantly I have no idea. Michelle needs to take you to the woodshed and leave you there. If I want to read shit from liberal sites I will go to Huffpo and DailyKos directly.

What is with young people their obsession over gay marriage?

terryannonline on April 13, 2009 at 9:37 PM

As a semi-young person, it’s been framed as “civil rights”, and because most young people don’t have a sense of history, and don’t know about the horrors of fire hoses and police dogs and back of the bus and emmitt till and bull connor, they assume “yes, yes, being fabulous, more educated, and wealthier than the average american but only being allowed a state ‘civil union’ is just like ‘colored’ water fountatins!”

It’s ‘uncool’ to be intolerant about anything, and so far there hasn’t been a set of reasons in the media about why to be anti-gay marriage other than ‘religion’. I have 1,000,000 reasons why gay marriage is bad, I’m just saying, the average 19 year old hasn’t heard those.

My honest prediction: this is like the ERA. it will gain steam until the slippery slope fear is publicized. when some roman polanski or jerry lee lewis type demands a high profile cousin marriage or child bride or polygamy, there will be a “whoa! omg! if we legally say gays can marry then there’s no way we can prohibit incest/pedo/polygamy, etc….”

now all we need is a phyllis schafly

battleoflepanto1571 on April 13, 2009 at 9:43 PM

What is with young people their obsession over gay marriage?

terryannonline on April 13, 2009 at 9:37 PM

Young people are often full of passion and short on perspective. It’s hard to blame them, though: most of them are filled with Leftist indoctrination for at least twelve-sixteen of their formative years.

It’s very easy to see this as a civil rights matter and take it no further. That’s a foolish, short-sighted mistake, in my opinion, but I understand the visceral appeal.

I’m just amazed that it’s not 100% yet.

Kensington on April 13, 2009 at 9:43 PM

Percy_Peabody on April 13, 2009 at 9:43 PM

That strapped for conten, AP? I’ve been trying to get you to post the best video of the day, and you’re posting Meghan McCain essentially repeating something she’s already said a number of times?

As for anyone who’s evolved their “tolerance” with the times, quit fooling yourselves. The whole idea of being gay is illogical and stupid. I know you people hate this comparison, but it truly fits. A couple of generations ago, the very idea of being born gay, and “gay rights”, etc. was outrageous and laughable… Why are we so sure we’re not going to see the same with with pedophiles a few generations from now?

(This is where you flip out because gays are “two consenting adults”, etc. and I stop you in your tracks by saying “what defines ‘adult’?” The law? Well the law used to ban sodomy, and still doesn’t allow gay marriage in most places… so perhaps there will be a push for “equal rights” for children who claim attraction to adults and adults who claim attraction to children. Also, another response to the “gays are 2 consulting adults” argument is, “why the number ’2′?” Who are we to deny rights to polygamists. What is so special about the number 2?

Oh, and here’s my favorite new one… The reason incest is not permitted is because of risk to children born to incestuous couples. So, does that mean gay brothers should be allowed to be together, and lesbian sisters? What’s the risk? Which goes back to the obvious point I made earlier, being “gay” is illogical on it’s face. The fact that we have 2 genders with unique reproductive organs that are specifically designed (or “evolved” if you must) to work together, isn’t a coincidence my friends.

I just wish people who stop being so emotional about this, just because they have an uncle or a lifelong friend who now claims to be gay. Let’s have a little common sense, shall we? I know you have it in you.

RightWinged on April 13, 2009 at 9:43 PM

We need a GOP that supports gay marriage.

No, what we need is to reach out to those with conservative principles who want a strong military, fiscal responsibility, less taxes, more freedom and smaller government. We don’t get anywhere by pandering or being liberal with our principles. Stick to our basic tenets and sell ourselves better to those who share our values. Not saying that we don’t need to adapt with the times, but only in very small steps.
I refuse to take advice from a woman who only changed to a republican for her dad’s birthday.
No principles, no conservative.
Know principles, know conservative.

I disagree with Meghan McCain quite a bit, but naturally I agree with her here. Granted, I’m more of a “civil unions” kind of gay (I don’t get the vapors over the “marriage” moniker either way), but I wish the GOP would get over the same-sex union heebeejeebies, just so it wouldn’t become such a “single issue” for both proponents and critics that make or break Party ID when it comes to voting.

The less focus on social wedge issues, the more time Americans — especially their politicians — can focus on economic and policy issues that are far more salient than same-sex unions. Che sera sera.

The GOP is not going to get anywhere positive by being Democrat-lite like Sen McCain.

I voted in the above poll because while I disagree with Vermont on this issue, they did pass it through the legislature. To me, the issue is over which state has more Constitutional backing when it comes time for legally married gay couples in Vermont who wish to move to a state that specifically outlaws gay marriage. Who has more authority, the state authorizing the gay marriage or the sovereignty of the state who rejects the gay marriage cert. of their new residents?
