Does anyone want to bet that the only reason Obama finally authorized the use of force was because of Captain Phillips’ escape attempt? When the Captain jumped off the lifeboat, tried to swim away, and was recaptured, the whole country was saying, why the heck didn’t the Navy do something to help him? Think of the outrage if it had happened a second time. In the end, I believe it was Captain Phillips’ own actions which resulted in his safe return. If he had not attempted to escape, I don’t believe the use of force would have been authorized.

The NYT is reporting the following: "The Defense Department twice asked Mr. Obama for permission to use military force to rescue Captain Phillips, most recently late on Friday night, senior defense officials said."

I would love to have been able to hear the conversation aboard the Navy ship when Captain Phillips attempted to escape by jumping out of the lifeboat early Friday, and the Navy had no authority to use force to help him. “We’ve got to help him!” “No, we can’t, we haven’t been given authorization.” “But they are shooting at him!” “There’s nothing we can do.”

Time to start shooting these men on sight. If you get within 10 yards of our ships, we will open fire. No more pattycake.

Like someone said yesterday, way to go Easter Seals!

I'm not going to second guess the president on this. Well, maybe I am. While I am glad for his authorization, shouldn't this have been the call from the very get go? Why wait until Saturday to authorize a hit "if the Captain was in imminent danger"? That should be policy. I'm hoping the president will come out today and say it straight forward...piracy will not be tolerated and if a ship's crew is in any kind of danger, real or undetermined, the Navy has my authorization to proceed as necessary. Period. That would make me feel a lot more secure if I were captain of a ship. Geez. Now what do we do to stop this?

Just let our on-scene assets loiter just outside the 20-mile limit of each of their pirate haven harbors for a week or two, put a dent in their ability to carry on "business" and see just how serious they are about taking on US flagged ships - after all, the Bainbridge is a US-flagged ship.

<blockquote>“Every country will be treated the way it treats us. In the future, America will be the one mourning and crying.”</blockquote>

In the immortal words of George W. Bush, <strong>"BRING IT ON!"</strong>

The government needs to stop bullshitting around with "international law" (what ever the hell that shit means) and start putting arm personal on certain ships that travel into regions like this, just like we do with the Airlines.

Enough with this nonsense.

If I understand this correctly, Obama did not authorize the use of force to save the Captain's life until early Saturday. So when the Captain first managed to jump out of the lifeboat, which was late Thursday, early Friday, the Navy did not have the authority to use force. So if the Navy had had that authority, they could have saved the Captain much earlier. Why did Obama wait so long to give them that authority? And why did they need to wait until the Captain's life was in "imminent" danger? Why wasn't the order, if you get the shot, and can take out the pirates without risking the Captain, take it? The fact that they are holding him hostage and threatening to kill him seems to me to be enough to justify the use of force. The whole thing is confusing to me.

<blockquote>Again congrats to Obama for realizing the limits of soft diplomacy and giving approval for snipers to take out the terrorists. I wonder how he’s gonna handle the esclation by the pirates.
eaglewingz08 on April 13, 2009 at 6:37 AM</blockquote>
All Obama did was give his assent to the use of force if the captain's life was in "imminent danger." Obama did not authorize a strike. What happened was that the captain once again jumped overboard. When that happened, the SEAL team lit them up--most likely because the pirates were trying to shoot at him again.

This op was way too contained to give Obama "credit" for anything. The real lesson here, incidentally, is the need for self reliance. The captain got himself into that situation and knew he had to get himself out. He took the appropriate action to do so.

What he will do and what he should do probably exist in two different worlds.

I wonder if a small carrier could be stationed off of Somalia with a group of helicopter gunships and heavily armed slow-movers. Might prove to be a target-rich environment.

I'm guessing A-10 Wart Hogs can't be carrier based. They sure could light up a pirate boat.

It's a failure of Obamas sof<strike>t</strike>a diplomacy , he was forced into a bush doctrine success , now it's harder for him to lecture about negotiations. The pirates says they will escalate , good then there will be an end to appeasement.

<blockquote>Yet you were silent. Not a peep the entire time dear leader was ordering pizza and puppy shopping.

Only an ignorant libturd would act like an a$$ then complain when they get treated like an a$$.

jdkchem on April 13, 2009 at 1:34 AM</blockquote>

Dude, he can't even go puppy shopping. He had to be given a 6 month old "mutt" "puppy" from the Kennedys... Now we see why they are pushing so hard for Caroline to become an "ambassador" after even NY threw her worthless a$$ out...

OK, back to the topic. The libs are celebrating "calm and cool" and quickly moving on to the banking crisis... They don't want to dwell on this because they know that Iran or NK should be testing us again yet any day... Further, I think they wouldn't want the country to know exactly how O was involved... If he was, he sure waited till there was no room for negotiations. If he wasn't he can't take any credit...

Dude, he can’t even go puppy shopping. He had to be given a 6 month old “mutt” “puppy” from the Kennedys… Now we see why they are pushing so hard for Caroline to become an “ambassador” after even NY threw her worthless a$$ out…

OK, back to the topic. The libs are celebrating “calm and cool” and quickly moving on to the banking crisis… They don’t want to dwell on this because they know that Iran or NK should be testing us again yet any day… Further, I think they wouldn’t want the country to know exactly how O was involved… If he was, he sure waited till there was no room for negotiations. If he wasn’t he can’t take any credit…

Yet you were silent. Not a peep the entire time dear leader was ordering pizza and puppy shopping.

Congratulations to PeBO for not wasting time "talking" and letting the military do their job. Let's hope he learns something for this.

Something tells me Bawney hasn't been such a butt pirate... But his booty has definitely been looted...

Ah, to think of Bawney and Timmy G in charge of the finances of Somalia...

<blockquote>I bet the negotiations would drag on for years and years. Decades, maybe.

Loxodonta on April 13, 2009 at 1:19 AM</blockquote>

It could end up like this:
US: You know we're not really missing them.
Somalis: We didn't mean to be stuck with them.
US: Oh well you took them.
Somalis: We'll give you a trillion to take them back.
US: We'll think about it and get back to you.

Other than Jessica Lynch, I doubt that many people have ever had more prayer go up for them than this Captain. Praise God and the Navy for his rescue.
