I would love to have been able to hear the conversation aboard the Navy ship when Captain Phillips attempted to escape by jumping out of the lifeboat early Friday, and the Navy had no authority to use force to help him. “We’ve got to help him!” “No, we can’t, we haven’t been given authorization.” “But they are shooting at him!” “There’s nothing we can do.”

Time to start shooting these men on sight. If you get within 10 yards of our ships, we will open fire. No more pattycake.

I’m not going to second guess the president on this. Well, maybe I am. While I am glad for his authorization, shouldn’t this have been the call from the very get go? Why wait until Saturday to authorize a hit “if the Captain was in imminent danger”? That should be policy. I’m hoping the president will come out today and say it straight forward…piracy will not be tolerated and if a ship’s crew is in any kind of danger, real or undetermined, the Navy has my authorization to proceed as necessary. Period. That would make me feel a lot more secure if I were captain of a ship. Geez. Now what do we do to stop this?

All Obama did was give his assent to the use of force if the captain’s life was in “imminent danger.” Obama did not authorize a strike. What happened was that the captain once again jumped overboard. When that happened, the SEAL team lit them up–most likely because the pirates were trying to shoot at him again.

This op was way too contained to give Obama “credit” for anything. The real lesson here, incidentally, is the need for self reliance. The captain got himself into that situation and knew he had to get himself out. He took the appropriate action to do so.

It would appear that the ‘necks are getting angrier. The resident surly rabble can barely contain themselves. Idiot America on Parade will be very entertaining on Wednesday. Remember to sneer for the cameras, asshats!
