Time to hammer the ports those pirates use with a bit of air power. Also, consider dropping a few SEALS onto the other hijacked ships still in international waters.

You kill them, you just put yourself on very thin ice and you won’t like what is underneath when, not if, you face it.
Or so I hope US policy will evolve.

The owner of the Italian tug taken yesterday wants to know why the U.S. Navy can do what they did for one American but not the ten Italians on his vessel. Oh, and those other six non-Italians on the tub also. He actually delineated the crew of this tug into Italians and those others. Kind of funny.
Cindy Munford on April 12, 2009 at 9:52 PM
The pirates don’t want trouble and they damn sure don’t want to provoke an airstrike on their bases–which are well known. I doubt they try that crap with an American ship anytime soon.
The pirates will go back to the lucrative non-American ships. They pay without a fuss.

I think they will be looking SPECIFICALLY for an American ship. If they want to get revenge, they have to realize killing anyone but an American will not send the desired message to the US. I think they will attempt to go after a US flagged ship and quickly get it to land. You have to remember that these pirates are pawns in a larger organization. Its not like the people running the show are trembling that a few of their lackeys got waxed.
thphilli on April 12, 2009 at 9:57 PM
Gotta give the French some credit (I don’t say that very often) for their handling of their own ship taken by pirates last week.
Although one hostage was killed, they acted quickly, and with force, to regain the ship and the rest of the crew.

The plight and courage of of Capt. Phillips makes the job of the apologetics liberal squad ten times more difficult.
The Pres. must suffering the utmost consternation at the prospect of honoring a true hero while at the same time feeling robbed of the politically correct acquiescence to pirates that relish the abuse of Americans,if for no other reason than to stroke his own ego.

“We will retaliate(for)killings of our men”.
Lets see,Submarines need torpedo practice,ya Obama might
howl a little about the price of torpedos, well with this
pirate action ongoing, maybe torpedo’s can get an ordanence
bailout!
They could float an aircraft carrier near by,and give some
predator’s a perimeter fly’n,scouting out and around time!
Ya,have to work on that one, maybe like an airspace problem,
a couple hundred drones, out and about checking on US flagged ships!
That way, pirates might think there just seagulls, except tho
when a hellfire is cleared hot,now that would make a great anti-pirate video!
Then, theres always the gals stationed back in the States,
monitoring the Satelites,in real time, then coordinating the attacks with predators,or maybe F-18′s!
So many ideas!

If Abdullahi Lami, a Somali pirate, and others want to engage in boastful threats against the United States, we simply must take them at face value, and respond accordingly. If they wish to become martyrs…then let us make sure we facilitate that desire.
What I do not understand, however, is why is it that certain types of people who vocally desire to become martyrs complain so loudly when we help them or their brethren in that pursuit.
Simply put, they asked for it.

And not just young and stupid, also entitled to what they call “tax” payments.
Loxodonta on April 12, 2009 at 10:22 PM
At the risk of being really simple. The solution is rather straight forward. A night attach on the port cities and destroy every boat in the harbor. Pirates without boats do not work very well. Interdict every Somali boat at sea board and disarm. Keep destroying boats and this problem will go away. It is a cottage industry that has to go peacefully or otherwise.
It is time to get ahead of this problem.

Abdullahi Lami, one of the pirates holding the Greek ship anchored in the Somali town of Gaan, said: “Every country will be treated the way it treats us. In the future, America will be the one mourning and crying,” he told The Associated Press. “We will retaliate (for) the killings of our men.”
Jamac Habeb, a 30-year-old self-proclaimed pirate, told the AP from one of Somalia’s piracy hubs, Eyl, that: “From now on, if we capture foreign ships and their respective countries try to attack us, we will kill them (the hostages).”
“Now they became our number one enemy,” Habeb said of U.S. forces.

The end of US leadership? Naw, not at all. Same thing happened back in the Carter years…US leadership is not ended, it is just being sidetracked…but in about 1378 days, it’ll get back on track. I remember reading how the locals went after the Rangers back in 1993. 18 Rangers killed about a thousand people in that debacle. And what did Clinton do? He pulled the men out. First he sent them in on a humanitarian mission and after their dead bodies were dragged through the streets, he said Enough.
Well, did we see any desire on the part of those people to avoid the cameras? Were they afraid of the United States? No, not even when our men were killing them 10 to 1.
They just might take revenge. Get some drug crazed guy to do something.

I do admire a Muslim pirates ability and balls to sneak aboard by pulling himself up X feet from the water with hook and rope. Got to be a rush. My admiration stops at the rail where I think a .45 through a pirates foreheads is an appropriate finish.
BL@KBIRD on April 12, 2009 at 10:35 PM
And as long as these insurance companies, as has been reported lately, won’t allow weapons onboard these merchant ships, but rather pay that ransom, it’s not even close to being over.
These pirates have hitched their star to the fact that they haven’t killed any of their hostages because they knew the money was coming regardless of how long it took. After today, the pirates won’t just try and board these ships to take control for their booty, they’re going to come on board shooting.
I don’t think this is going to be about money anymore. They want blood and they want our blood.

Loxodonta on April 12, 2009 at 10:55 PM
It wouldn’t be overly taxing to launch an air campaign against their infrastructure, the warlords’ palaces, and the like. Keep in mind these pirates are operating from known coastal harbors, and as primitive as they might be, they do have a rudimentary logistical infrastructure which would be fairly easy pickings.
As an added bonus, we could harass the crap out of their leadership with some special ops activity centered around snagging some of the pirates’ leadership. That would probably take intel I doubt we currently have, though.

BLACKWATER
Dr Evil on April 12, 2009 at 10:57 PM
Over 20 nations, to include China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India…even Iran and Russia…and most NATO members have ships at sea in the western Indian Ocean and near the approaches to the Red Sea to counteract piracy from Somalia. Problem being that each has cognizance for its own merchant ships, though some efforts are coordinated.
Now, if these same ships could patrol closer to the Somali coast…and force an exclusion zone of ten to twenty nautical miles offshore, and destroy any ship coming out of a Somali port that has not been inspected and is not escorted by one of the anti-piracy ships under coordinated control from the joint task force commander…maybe most of this piecemeal effort to stop piracy from Somalia can be reduced significantly, and rapidly.
At the same time, presenting the pirates with a simple choice…release all hostages immediately, and return all ships and cargoes seized, and pay on the spot compensation for ships damaged/sunk, and cargoes expropriated also immediately, or the Somali coast will become a free-fire target and gunnery practice zone for the international community…is it reasonable to assume this might have a positive effect on the piracy issue?
coldwarrior on April 12, 2009 at 10:59 PM
Then you need a machine gun.
Just aim and spray.
Wipes the pirates away.
NRA Cruises would be a huge hit in that region!
Consider the bucaneers skeet that floats.
profitsbeard on April 12, 2009 at 11:01 PM
It’s completely reasonable to assume that. It’s just not reasonable to assume the current CinC would have the stomach for it.
flipflop on April 12, 2009 at 11:01 PM
Well, the way I see it, if we stick with airstrikes, we might not get sucked in.
If we start sending in ground forces, we’re going to
a) be sucked into a larger ground war with AQ, Shabaab, their pirates,
which would lead to
b) a longer term commitment. I have a hard time believing if we engaged in a ground operation, that we would not eventually become involved in a national rebuilding operation as well.
blatantblue on April 12, 2009 at 11:02 PM
Why am I getting this wonderful image of the skeet surfing routine from the Val Kilmer movie Top Secret all of a sudden?
coldwarrior on April 12, 2009 at 11:03 PM
That’s probably true of a large conventional ground operation. God knows we don’t want to get sucked into Somalia long term. But limited special ops strikes I think could go a long way dissuading the higher ups who don’t put their own necks on the line.

An interesting take on the events of this week (pirates) and next (tea party)…
Regardless of our coward in chief and his marxist moron administration…
America and Americans are genetically wired for courage. No matter who is at the helm, we as individuals or collectively, always seem to find a way to be the best, the brightest, the smartest and the most exceptional. No matter what is thrown at us we will fight to the bitter end regardless of the odds, the criticism, the nay sayers and the obstacles.
Today has given me hope. Not because of our leadership but inspite of it…
katy on April 12, 2009 at 11:04 PM
The estimates during the Battle of Mogadishu were 5,000 “skinnies” against 100 Delta Force operators and Rangers, according to the book in which the movie Black Hawk Down was based. That only 18 of our guys were killed against such a number of enemies shows how the training and equipment our soldiers have is the best.
The deal is that the Somalis sure remember what happened after the battle. We left!!! That’s maybe part of the reason they’re so cocky. They did see indecision in the part of the US this time. We didn’t go in immediately, but instead stayed waiting for instructions and “negotiations.”
They sure believe we’ll think twice again when they go after one of our ships. Because they will, and they may try to kill one of our guys to show how ‘tough’ they are. They should allow our merchant ships to be armed in some way.

blatantblue on April 12, 2009 at 11:06 PM
I don’t see any rationale for ground operations in Somalia. Maybe a selected raid or two, as necessary, limited to team level, but why place ground forces in the area at all?
This can be taken care of by naval assets. Looking at the terrain, and where the threat is, these small and pretty spare pirate harbors are all within standard naval gunnery range. Stop over to GoogleEarth…pull in a few of the coastal harbors…not a lot there, really, except immediately around the several harbors.
No real call for any sort of ground action. Same as air assets. The tooth to tail ratio for air assets in the area is pretty skewed…and Diego Garcia is on the other side of the Indian Ocean. Not a lot of capable airfields in the region either that we can use at our choosing.
The navies are there…have been for over three years…and they are rotating ships routinely. Keep it simple, keep it uniform and coordinated. Let the Navy do what it was originally formed up to do.
