Roll Away The Stone – Tom Conry
They have been saying all our plans are empty.
They have been saying “Where is their God now?”
Roll away the stone, see the Glory of God. Roll away the stone…
They have been saying no one will remember.
They have been saying Power rules the world.
Roll away the stone, see the Glory of God. Roll away the stone…
They have been saying no one hears the singing.
They have been saying all our strength is gone.
Roll away the stone, see the Glory of God. Roll away the stone…
They have been saying “All of us are dying.”
They have been saying “All of us are dead.”
Roll away the stone, see the Glory of God. Roll away the stone…
That’s one of my favorite Easter hymns. We went to a more traditional parish for Easter vigil last night, so instead of this hymn, we were blessed by a marvelous choir singing Handel’s Messiah and other more traditional celebratory music. We also had an opportunity to welcome an old friend into the church last night; he had been an atheist his entire life, but last night completed his journey to the Lord with baptism, confirmation, and his first Eucharist. Afterwards, we enjoyed a warm reception at a mutual friend’s house that lasted into the wee hours of the night.
Today, we’ll spend our Easter Sunday with family. I hope yours is a blessed Easter, one that brings you closer to the Lord and the salvation of His resurrection.
Update: My good friend The Anchoress has spent Holy Week focusing on the spiritual. Be sure to read it all.

Being a typical Roman Catholic…I found that Friday [Good Friday] around here was a cold, dreary, wet and blustery day…appropriately. And this morning, Easter Sunday? Clear skies, brilliant sunrise, warming temperatures, no wind, and a perfect morning…also appropriate.
In small ways, God let’s us know things…

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
“No,” they answered.
He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.
Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”
Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

At this time of year, Christians celebrate the ultimate sacrifice. But let us not forget the other tale of celebration. The Last Supper was a Passover Seder.
Passover is celebrated every year as homage to the tale of the Exodus, where a simple man was selected by G-d, and crafted to deliver the Jews from bondage in Egypt. It is a tale of exquisite faith and deliverance, and should not be forgotten by the Christian faithful.
In this political time, we may be re-entering a time of bondage, where we are enslaved by our Government to pay insane taxes with no real control over their expenditure. And it may get worse. Passover puts this battle into a real context, telling how, and to what measure, our forebears sacrificed themselves and an entire generation to be delivered from slavery and into the promised land.
Happy Easter everyone, and a Solemn and Reflective Passover!

Where was the Corpus Christi, the body of Christ?
If the Romans or the Jewish leaders took it, they would have produced it promptly after the disciples started preaching the resurrection.
If the disciples took it, why did they keep preaching that they saw Jesus alive, that they saw him ascend to Heaven, when it would eventually cost most of them their lives? Who would die for what they know is a lie?
Jesus is risen indeed!

Luke Ch 24 Vs 46-53
And said unto them “Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
And ye are witnesses of these things.
And behold, I send the promise of my father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerulalem, until ye be endued with power from on high”.
And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing GOD.
Amen.

I have never understood how Jesus’s birthday is a static date in the church, but the days of death and undeath move from year to year.
That makes just about as much sense as Episodes I-III.

Thanks for the link. But, I knew that Easter and Passover were tied to lunar cycles. What I still don’t know is why take the lunar cycles into account for the death and undeath, but not the birth.
Blarg the Destroyer on April 12, 2009 at 12:24 PM
The Lord of glory suffered on the cross for our sins… he went to the grave for three days and three nights where, unlike any man before or since, he saw no decay… thus undoing the curse of Adam… and rising from the dead, undoing death, making immortality and resurrection possible for all under the curse of Adam!
But if you masturbate or use the f-word, God will send you to eternal, fiery torment forever.

Mark 16: 1-7
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him.
2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”
4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large.
5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed.
6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.
7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’”
Mr. D on April 12, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Theistic Evolution destroys the resurrection… of what use is the undoing of death if death was God’s plan for nature?
Mark me, I have no problem with Atheistic Evolution (philosophically, that is)… at least that makes sense in their model. Theistic evolution, however, destroys the victory over the grave. If the grave was the plan, when did it become “the last enemy”? Death is part of the curse. It is what needed to be conquered and it will eventually be destroyed. Making it the great means of biological advancement is antithetical to the Resurrection.

Jesus was buried because it was approaching Sabbath, at sundown. However, while every Saturday was a Sabbath, not every Sabbath was a Saturday. The first day of Passover was also considered a Sabbath, as was the last. So if the approaching Sabbath was the first day of Passover, as seems clear from the Scripture, then it wasn’t necessarily Friday at sundown.
The better way to calculate is to take the known day of Resurrection, Sunday, and subtract 3 days. Bear in mind, that the Jewish day officially starts at sundown, and that when the disciples reached the tomb the sun had not yet risen, but the tomb was empty.
So:
Wed just before sundown: Burial of Jesus
Wed sunset to Thu sunset: Day 1
Thu sunset to Fri sunset: Day 2
Fri sunset to Sat sunset: Day 3
Sunday morning sunrise: Tomb is empty
Also note that this scenario has Jesus being put to death the day before the Passover, at about the same time sacrificial lambs were being put to death for the Passover.

My favorite Easter season reading is the one of the two on the road to Emmaus, they are so sad and dispirited and then Jesus is there and they have a burning in their chests. When Jesus breaks the bread, they know him.
In our everyday, ordinary lives, if we listen there is Jesus explaining it all to us, especially in the times when we are afraid and sad. Then we go to church and there He is in the Eucharist.
Wow, what a glorious gift.
I know that my Redeemer lives, and I shall rise again.
Have a Beautiful and Holy Day as we celebrate His victory over death.
Jvette on April 12, 2009 at 1:20 PM
The Passion of Christ is very clearly a specific time in the Jewish calendar. We know that it happened in the season of Passover. The time of his birth was not ever defined as a specific time.

Typically, that’s how they do it with adult converts from atheism or non-Christian religions. The Catholic Church recognizes all Christian baptisms as valid, so a convert from a Protestant church does not require a new baptism.

I am an adult convert to Catholicism. Although I was probably baptized, I had no records, nor any relatives who could confirm it. When Father and I agreed a Catholic baptism was the best way to handle my situation, his face beamed and his eyes sparkled. He was very rotund, jolly, Irish-American, and would have made a great Santa, now deceased, bless him. But at the Easter baptism ceremony, he was like a general commanding his troops. No nonsense. It was very a healing experience for me.
