Video: CNN mildly scolds Obama for bow, media for ignoring it
posted at 11:38 am on April 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The White House miscalculated on its “no-bow” response. CNN spends a couple of minutes calling them on it — and giving profuse credit to Hot Air while doing so. Take a close look at the video shots in this Jeanne Moos segment, which aired this morning, and you’ll recognize my handiwork, especially in the part where CNN compares the bow to Saudi King Abdullah and the correct protocol of a head nod to the shorter Queen Elizabeth (hat tip: HA reader Geoff A):
Here are the YouTube videos displayed in part during the segment:
Moos plays it down the middle in the inevitable man-on-the-street interviews, but winds up mildly chiding both the White House and the media for ignoring this. She plays a portion of Jay Leno’s focus on George Bush’s handholding with Abdullah, which got reams of press when it happened, strongly suggesting the double standard of the media in ignoring the bow altogether, at least until now. Moos also shows that the bow preceded the two-handed handshake, and concludes that the White House is not being terribly honest.
Kudos to CNN for covering the story at all — and kudos for giving us credit for the source material. They even covered the Obamateurism of the Day feature, and I’ll bet Chris Muir gets a kick out of that.
Instead of just acknowledging an error, Robert Gibbs lied about it, and all but dared the media to report it. CNN isn’t the only media outlet taking the challenge, either. The Chicago Sun-Times scolds Obama for his display, now that the White House tried to spin it:
Did he or didn’t he? Did President Obama bow to Saudi King Abdullah at the G-20 meeting in London? That question is creating a bit of a dust-up in the blogosphere. The brouhaha reminds me of the tsk-tsking a few years back when President George W. Bush was photographed holding hands with then-Crown Prince Abdullah. …
That said, the president of the United States does not bow to kings. He is not only the chief of government, he’s our head of state — the equal of any monarch. The White House says Obama didn’t bow, that he “grasped (Abdullah’s) hand with two hands and he’s taller than King Abdullah.”
Sorry, but a videotape on YouTube doesn’t quite back that up. Obama clearly bends his body toward the Arabian monarch, and Obama doesn’t grasp both the king’s hands until he’s standing straight up. As for the he’s-taller argument, the 6-foot-1-inch Obama towers over a lot of people, so we’d have seen him bowing during handshakes many times if that were the explanation. Furthermore, the king had his hand extended, so Obama didn’t have to reach down an inordinate amount to grab it.
Heads of state do not bow to other heads of state. Abdullah didn’t reciprocate with a bow to Obama, for instance, and none of the other heads of state in the original video did so much as a shoulder incline. It’s the act of a rank amateur, a man unprepared to represent a nation as head of state. Thankfully, a few people have begun to notice it.
Update: Deceiver experiences Wonkette’s “humor”, which relies heavily on fellatio.

his bow was stupid, his denial stupider as for the double standard from the left, the same people who gave us such worthy pieces of fiction as Fahrenheit 9/11 pr “House of Bush, House of Saud”, it to be expected.

Obama was taller than Queen Elizabeth and didn’t bow OR show any sign of respect.
Protocol has it’s place.
originalpechanga on April 10, 2009 at 11:46 AM
He screwed up the protocol in his meeting with Queen Elizabeth (which was a family screw-up, since Michelle botched her protocol as well), and was probably given a refresher course overnight, and then got confused between proper protocol for meeting the Queen of England and the King of the Saudis (Obama probably would have bowed that morning if the G-20 reception had included a meeting with the Burger King, given his lack of both knowledge of proper greetings to dignitaries and he and his staff’s apparent belief that this was all about them anyway, and how the foreign leaders would react to President Obama, not the other way around).

And I don’t have an issue of bowing if he was only Barack Obama, the man, but he was there as PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES, leader of the Free WORLD, commander in chief of our armed forces (ones he needs a cue card to remember) and the POTUS should bow down to NO foreign leader.
Especially one that doesn’t give basic human rights to its women

Oh no doubt. I just can’t take it.
They don’t care about America.
I go to a rally every Saturday, where some old timers and others sit on our side of this one street with our set up, and the liberals with their stupid signs across the street. Instead of American flags, they walk around with “Peace sign flags” and flags that just have a picture of the globe.
They couldn’t give two shi’ites about the US.
blatantblue on April 10, 2009 at 11:49 AM
It is hard to tell from the picture, but in addition to doing his deep bow to the POS King, it also looks like Obama is wearing some kind of dhimmi garb.

Of course, he’s in denial over the bowing incident and buys into the White House spin. He actually referred to The One’s recent trip abroad as “triumphant.”

I urged that kings were dangerous. He said, then have cats. He was sure that a royal family of cats would answer every purpose. They would be as useful as any other royal family, they would know as much, they would have the same virtues and the same treacheries, the same disposition to get up shindies with other royal cats, they would be laughably vain and absurd and never know it, they would be wholly inexpensive, finally, they would have as sound a divine right as any other royal house…The worship of royalty being founded in unreason, these graceful and harmless cats would easily become as sacred as any other royalties, and indeed more so, because it would presently be noticed that they hanged nobody, beheaded nobody, imprisoned nobody, inflicted no cruelties or injustices of any sort, and so must be worthy of a deeper love and reverence than the customary human king, and would certainly get it.

Not that I make it a habit, but I sometimes see CNN on TV while at work; they’ve actually become a little more tolerable. Do you suppose that they know MSNBC is taking the rabidly left viewers, so they’re trying to appeal more to the middle? Would be nice to see more like this.

Congratulations and thanks for working this issue so well, Ed.
When liberals saw President Bush holding hands with King Abdullah, they laughed and ridiculed the President, almost instinctively.
Yet, so many liberals can’t even see that President Obama bowed down with bended knee before Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.” They simply deny it. Or, if they do admit, they treat this action as a sign of Obama’s intelligence and respect for the various cultures of world.
Liberal’s automatic and opposite reactions really boggles my mind.

The story here is the blatant lie, not the stupid bow.
The fact that it reached CNN is significant.

EMD on April 10, 2009 at 12:02 PM
Congrats on the CNN notice, Ed. Maybe Hot Air will someday get a Pulitzer. Or even a worthwhile award.
One quibble though:
Americans do not bow to heads of state. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. . . that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, derived their just power from the consent of the governed.”
It’s wrong for any of us to bow to King Abdullah or Queen Elizabeth. Not to be jerks, but just because we are their equal. And heads of state/government are merely public servants.

Yeah, give credit for CNN even covering it… but not much credit. That idiot Jeanie Most plays the video for people on the street on a small laptop, intentionally making it difficult to see what happened. If you want people to give an honest response, you show them what happened from the clearest view possible.
Good grief, this administration will even lie about something that anyone with their eyes open can see. How much are you gonna trust what they report when things happen behind closed doors?

Gibbs got the job after confronting Sean Hannity on Hannity & Colmes, he called Hannity out on being a racist, and had “proof”. Right after he did that, I turned to my wife and said “well it looks like Obama has his next Press secretary figured out”. We laughed. When it was announced that is WAS Gibb’s later we had to laugh again.

Since Obama knows that Hillary is a miserable failure, is he expecting the Saudi King to run American interference with the Somali pirates?
Don’t hold your breath, Obiboy. Like Cosby’s joke, when Noah balked accepting directions, God asked, “Noah, how long can you tread water?” It applies to CNN as well as Obama attached media.
Get the impeachments underway; Obama refuses to protect Americans. He has no allegiance to America. Obama’s sworn oath consists of “words, just words” without meaning to him.

The lie coming out of the White House is 10 times worse.
They’ve even managed to insult the intelligence of their own base.
Knucklehead on April 10, 2009 at 12:20 PM
Congratulations, Ed! You made at least one MSMer stand upright and take notice!
Another thing about Jeanne Moos’ report: She exposes the unwillingness of late night comedians — who are increasingly the source of news for lazy people — to lampoon this President. I was born under Kennedy and have been a news junkie since Nixon, and I have never seen comedians treat the POTUS as untouchable for biting, even cruel, satire until now. I clearly remember early in the W years how Leno posted one of those photos with one of Bush’s infamous “smirk,” and with a graphic referring to his expression as a “s— eating grin (sic)”. Think Jay would dare try that with Obama?
If someone had told me growing up that someday the people who were socking it to Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan would turn on a dime and say, “We can’t make jokes about the President” the same way Soviets feared reprisals for joking about Brezhnev, I wouldn’t have believed it.
For you kiddies out there: Fearing reprisals for joking about the President is NOT a positive trend in a “free” society. Think about it, if you still can.
L.N. Smithee on April 10, 2009 at 12:23 PM
Yes, yes and yes. But I suspect their base doesn’t mind having its intelligence insulted. We see ample evidence of that.
Mr. D on April 10, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Heads of state don’t bow down to other heads of state, except possibly a muslim head of state bowing down to the Saudi King in his role as keeper of the holiest places of Islam, then a bow may be understandable. Why a Christian would give such an honorific bow to the keeper of such holy places, is indeed a mystery and why his Spokesperson lied about it lamely adds intrigue to the mystery.
eaglewingz08 on April 10, 2009 at 12:26 PM
I also commend CNN for once, for being honest and dispassionate and nonpartisan in this report. Maybe it’s the combination of Easter and Passover that brought such a report to balance? Whatever, if this keeps up with CNN, the end times may be nearer than we think.

Correct. And Geraldo Rivera actually agrees with you.
This morning, he wrote it off as a remnant of Hussein’s Indonesian upbringing. Geraldo said that since he’s from Brooklyn he might be tempted to high five a head of state if they ever met.
This of course totally ignores the fact that we have written protocols on how the POTUS should greet other heads of state.

AZfederalist on April 10, 2009 at 1:37 PM
I was surprised when Geraldo said this. It’s one of the only sensible things to come out of his mouth in a long time, but he still didn’t seem to really understand what it meant – that The Precedent is basically an Indonesian in how he thinks (though it isn’t hard to see this in the idiot messiah’s ideas and his lack knowledge about America and American culture).
Of course, no one was allowed to mention this during the campaign, and Geraldo would have gone nuclear on anyone who even attempted to imply that BHO was an Indonesian at heart. I hear people talk about how the idiot messiah “spent some time in Indonesia” .. it was from ages 5-10!!! That’s the great bulk of ones formative years, and pretty much all one remembers from childhood. Unreal.
I still hope that the SCOTUS will find some backbone and throw this usurper out of office. That is one of the only chances the US has.
progressoverpeace on April 10, 2009 at 1:50 PM
I do not think the bow was stupid. I do not think the bow was accidental. I think the bow was thought out in advance and was done intentionally with a specific purpose.
What that purpose was, I can only hazard a guess.
Presidents do not go to things like this and “wing it”. Such things are planned out to the smallest detail. This bow was made with much forthought.
gridlock2 on April 10, 2009 at 1:52 PM
CNN doesn’t care that he bowed – fine.
But why don’t they care that the White House is lying about it?

Exactly. And it’s such an indefensible, transparent lie, as can be seen by Gibbs’ own smirking at the idea that anyone would believe his drivel that he even acknowledges to be moronic, that the press ought to be triply offended. To take something so obvious, right on video in front of our eyes and just lie about it is akin to saying that the sky is green. It’s insane, really.

About that remark Obama makes in the CNN video that we should give Islam more respect:
“According to a recent opinion poll, many muslims say that the way for the West to have better relations with Islam, is to show it more respect. And who said, ‘Muslim’s don’t have a sense of humour’?
Given that Islam is above criticism in the west, it’s hard to imagine how we could give it any more respect . . .short of closing down all of the pubs, growing beards and beating up women who don’t want to dress like nuns. Ah, yes, of course. Silly me. I think many people in the West, are now realizing that Islam has already been given far too much ‘respect’. Especially here in Europe where according to another poll, people now see it as a threat to their culture. They carry on accomodating it’s every demand of course, but this is not because Islam is welcome in Europe. Far from it. It’s because people have been conditioned by the lie of multiculturalism to believe that what they SHOULD think is more important than what they DO think.” – Pat Condell
Michelle Dubois on April 10, 2009 at 2:02 PM
Right. CNN clearly doesn’t think the bow is a big deal, but they also clearly think that Obama bowed. So their question should be, “Why is the White House denying something that isn’t a big deal?”

It is worse than the sign of a rank amateur. Far, far worse. He came nowhere near such obsequiousness in greeting any other head of state, including the Queen of Great Britain. Why show such deference, servility even, only to the king of Saudi Arabia? Is his approach to showing greater respect to the ‘Muslim world’ going to mean fawning servility to Muslim heads of state while he denigrates his own country and gives gifts to European heads of states that are best interpreted as signs of disrespect? What else can this mean?
