President Pantywaist

posted at 12:55 pm on April 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Charles Krauthammer and Gerald Warner take up where Jackson Diehl left off in analyzing Barack Obama’s Grand Tour this month.  Both men sound warning alarms over Obama’s tendency to surrender large swaths of the American agenda in return for getting nothing at all.  And while Krauthammer wonders whether Obama has a sense of his own American identity, Warner wonders whether Obama has any sense at all.

First, Krauthammer:

Our president came bearing a basketful of mea culpas. With varying degrees of directness or obliqueness, Obama indicted his own people for arrogance, for dismissiveness and derisiveness, for genocide, for torture, for Hiroshima, for Guantanamo and for insufficient respect for the Muslim world.

And what did he get for this obsessive denigration of his own country? He wanted more NATO combat troops in Afghanistan to match the surge of 17,000 Americans. He was rudely rebuffed.

He wanted more stimulus spending from Europe. He got nothing.

From Russia, he got no help on Iran. From China, he got the blocking of any action on North Korea.

And what did he get for Guantanamo? France, pop. 64 million, will take one prisoner. One! (Sadly, he’ll have to leave his swim buddy behind.) The Austrians said they would take none. As Interior Minister Maria Fekter explained with impeccable Germanic logic, if they’re not dangerous, why not just keep them in America?

When Austria is mocking you, you’re having a bad week. Yet who can blame Frau Fekter, considering the disdain Obama showed his own country while on foreign soil, acting the philosopher-king who hovers above the fray mediating between his renegade homeland and an otherwise warm and welcoming world?

I thought that would win the Scorn Award for the week, but that’s just a warm-up for Warner.  The British columnist for the Telegraph has a new name for Obama — well, two, actually:

So The One retired triumphant, having secured a massive contribution of 5,000 extra troops – all of them non-combatant, of course – which must really have put the wind up the Taliban, at the prospect of 5,000 more infidel cooks and bottle-washers swarming into the less hazardous regions of Afghanistan.

Then came the dramatic bit, the authentic West Wing script, with the President wakened in the middle of the night in Prague to be told that Kim Jong-il had just launched a Taepodong-2 missile. America had Aegis destroyers tracking the missile and could have shot it down. But Uncle Sam had a sterner reprisal in store for l’il ole Kim (as Dame Edna might call him): a multi-megaton strike of Obama hot air. …

President Pantywaist is hopping mad and he has a strategy to cut Kim down to size: he is going to slice $1.4bn off America’s missile defence programme, presumably on the calculation that Kim would feel it unsporting to hit a sitting duck, so that will spoil his fun.

Watch out, France and Co, there is a new surrender monkey on the block and, over the next four years, he will spectacularly sell out the interests of the West with every kind of liberal-delusionist initiative on nuclear disarmament and sitting down to negotiate with any power freak who wants to buy time to get a good ICBM fix on San Francisco, or wherever. If you thought the world was a tad unsafe with Dubya around, just wait until President Pantywaist gets into his stride.

The White House says it will take more than a few days for Obama’s impact to be felt, but I think they’re underestimating their President.  Obama’s impact was plain to see.  He drew great crowds for his American Humility Tour, and it played well — as bowing and scraping always does to those whom one bows and scrapes.  Europe might like the whiff of surrender coming from Obama, but they made it plain that it would result in no movement on the American agenda.  Actually, that’s not entirely true; as Diehl points out, Obama mostly neglected to even mention the American agenda.

John Kennedy had the insight to realize that he blew his performance with Nikita Khrushchev in 1961.  Newt Gingrich allowed for the possibility that Obama might come to the same realization after this disaster of a foreign tour.  Will President Pantywaist recover, a la Kennedy, or wallow in the self-delusional spin his White House provided this week, a la Jimmy Carter?  Let’s hope it’s the former, because the world is far too dangerous a place for America to have a President Pantywaist.

Tommy_G on April 10, 2009 at 1:04 PM

Both men sound warning alarms over Obama’s tendency to surrender large swaths of the American agenda in return for getting nothing at all.

I’m glad that Krauthammer and others are finally coming around, but they still have a long way to go. The Precedent didn’t really care if he got anything. All he wanted to do was weaken and discredit the US. That was his intent, nad he did pretty well with that.

People have to come to grips with what lies behind the idiot messiah’s obssession with “economic and social justice”, which, as his moron goon at Justice was explaining, it’s about exacting revenge on whites and the West, in general. The Precedent isn’t looking to do anything more than hurt the US as much as he possibly can until he is finally tossed out of an office that he’s not even eligible to hold (with any reasonable look at the Founders’ intent with ‘natural-born’).

That said, I welcome the slow recognition, and think that Warner’s article was hysterically funny. The Precedent has earned nothing but contempt from anyone with a brain, and that is still being generous to the America-hating idiot.

Will President Pantywaist recover, a la Kennedy, or wallow in the self-delusional spin his White House provided this week, a la Jimmy Carter?

Obama hearts Carter. The idea that Carter endorsed Obama in order to relieve himself of being the worst POTUS ever has logic. Obama is no JFK who attempted to follow Truman’s image. Besides, JFK was no King Arthur, nor Sir Lancelot. His only connection to such Romantic Heroism was that he screwed America royal, hardly the connection to boast.

If you align Obama to JFK, the only similarity would be in Kennedy’s Obama-style indecisive Cuban Bay of Pigs inability to maintain a strong course of action. JFK tried to cover his ass via diversion by dragging us into IndoChina/VietNam, just like Clinton’s ‘wag the tail’ Bosnian bombings of Christians to distract from his own f8ckups. JFK blinked first and the USSR trounced us as Kennedy withdrew all of our international missile launch installations in Turkey in order to get the Russians to “retreat” from Cuba.

The only Camelot that existed during the Kennedy presidency was fabricated by the media and swallowed whole by Americans who’d rather believe a fairy tale than accept reality.

Given the persistent though false legend of the JFK Camelot “legacy” the only resemblance that the Obama’s reflect to either JFK or “Camelot” is in the designer clothes that they imitate and wear. Hell, anyone can put on Jackie’s wardrobe and say, “Look at me! I’m Jackie now!” That only proves the Obamas’ own lack of creativity, fashion designers’ lack of creativity, and applies to the regurgitating media as well.

I am NOT buying any of it.

Pantywaist Obama as seen abroad is Pirate Obama at home as he steals powers that the Constitution prohibits him, and negates the Constitution in the process.

I am not buying anything that Obama endorses.

No good is coming from Obama, only persecution.

Loxodonta on April 10, 2009 at 1:24 PM

Even if you don’t believe that Obama means to surrender wherever challenged, the chance that this perception becomes reality increase the odds that he’ll need to demonstrate his “spine of steel” as assorted adversaries up their bids. Pissing off the far left by letting the Iraqi SOFA slide in deference to Odierno, or escalating Predator and other strikes in Waziristan, won’t be enough. Even if the Prez just wants to finish his waffle and look good, and isn’t determined to turn a step back into a full-fledged global retreat, the internal dynamic points to some spasmodic, counterproductive “demonstration” of his machismo somewhere.

Hawthorne on April 10, 2009 at 1:28 PM

I think the “no idea what it’s like to be an American” pretty much hits it. I feel he probably doesn’t have a deep-rooted love of our country the way most of us do, as a result of his upbringing.

Although all of us have different experiences, there are probably many points in our youth where we saw what America really is; watching the Space Shuttle take off, saluting the VFW in the Independence Day parade, Thanksgiving with the family, seeing our soldiers returning victorious. Whatever it is, it forms most people’s love of country very early and very deep. In fact, didn’t Obam’ter try to show that with the story of his grandfather taking him to an Apollo splashdown?

I don’t know all the day-to-day details of Obam’ter’s youth, but being shuffled from Kansas, to Hawaii, to Kenya, to Indonesia, wherever, seems to me would dilute those events. Since then, he’s lost himself in the world of Acadamia, politics, etc, as someone above said, and buried his brain the socio-political theories.

I don’t think he actually hates the country, he’s just got his head so full of theoretical crap that he has no common reference to the American experience.

JamesLee on April 10, 2009 at 1:29 PM

Apologies, I failed to note that JFK’s legacy of blunders included the Iron Curtain that promoted the Cold War Arms Race that though existed by requirement, was augmented exponentially because Kennedy the Weak was recognized as such by our former ally opponents who most decisively became our arch enemies during Kennedy’s “Camelot” presidency.

I make a gentleman’s bet (no dough) that Jackie HATED the Camelot image that would have implied HER sexual infidelity rather than her husband’s, when it was HIS indiscreet escapades, particularly with Marilyn Monroe, that Jackie endured.

Your Governor should announce she is taking all of the “stimulus” funds to maintain the missile defense positions.

Here’s a kit to help you learn how to speak Austrian.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 10, 2009 at 1:35 PM

Well, this is obviously a conservative hit piece, but I do think that Obama team has gone overboard on the message of “resetting” the button.

My perspective is that the message is too campaign-style for governing, and he’s running into a real transition issue and, that is, his closest advisors are still in campaign mode. Simplicity is OK, but it’s backfiring as president.

Obama is learning on the job.

That’s debatable. What has he learned? Nothing that I can detect.

mr.blacksheep on April 10, 2009 at 1:38 PM

Mea culpa = My fault.

Has Obama ever admitted that he is at fault for anything? I thought he spent his world apology tour blaming everybody in our country, except himself.

Loxodonta on April 10, 2009 at 1:24 PM

We noted during the potus campaign Obama’s complete refusal to apologize for his errors and refusal to accept apologies over misunderstandings from others. He promised lies, claiming to be above the racist fray, and fools believed him. His anti-American chip on his boney antipathy shoulder monopolizes his every thought and effort.

Piracy: Obama culpa

Potus Obama is pirating Constitutional rights and revising the NEW global rule of law as set forth by his Socialist Constitution of the Untied States.

BillaryMcBush on April 10, 2009 at 1:39 PM

I don’t know all the day-to-day details of Obam’ter’s youth, but being shuffled from Kansas, to Hawaii, to Kenya, to Indonesia, wherever, seems to me would dilute those events. Since then, he’s lost himself in the world of Acadamia, politics, etc, as someone above said, and buried his brain the socio-political theories.

I don’t think he actually hates the country, he’s just got his head so full of theoretical crap that he has no common reference to the American experience.

JamesLee on April 10, 2009 at 1:29 PM

He never lived in Kansas. His mother was born there but moved away when she was 13. He has milked that Kansas connection to death. He was born in Hawaii, moved to Indonesia, then back to Hawaii, then went to college in L.A. and New York City before moving to Chicago. The area we call “flyover country” is completely foreign territory to him, as is the entire South and Northwest.

I was hoping no one else was going to notice….

CarolynM on April 10, 2009 at 1:42 PM

I’m inclined to agree with you, pop.

Thing is, though, Obama is not alone. He has plenty of accomplices.

UNfortunately, that’s very true.

What I don’t get is what’s in it for them? Is their agenda the same as Obama’s?

misslizzi on April 10, 2009 at 1:17 PM

For most of the whites, it is their illusory guilt that drives them. They feel guilty about everything and are embarrassed to belong to the most powerful and most successful group on the planet. These people are driven by the desire to atone for imaginary sins that swamp their minds. For them, voting for the idiot messiah was the ultimate penitence. They want to be hurt. They want the US to fail and be thrown from the peak of civilization. These people can’t stand winners of any type, since they are obsessed with the feelings of the losers (as they generally identify with them), and they want the winners to hurt .. and hurt badly.

This is all a mass psychotic break that was allowed to spread because we stopped pointing out how insane these people are and how they have no place in polite society. As a result, there is no polite society left.

This all results from the fact that we are a Judeo-Christian culture that uses guilt as the main control mechanism (as guilt is the mechanism that individualistic societies use, as opposed to shame for the tribalistic cultures). Guilt is a very private affair (I can feel guilty about something even if no one else knows about it … and I then must atone for it, somehow). SHame is a very public affair (I cannot feel shame about something unless someone else knows that I did it … and I then must exact revenge for it, somehow).

Individualistic cultures are the most powerful and most creative, but they carry with them the risk that a certain percentage of people will be unable to handle normal guilt (sort of like kids who can’t watch horror movies without having nightmares for weeks and weeks) and those people will tend to turn into self-haters, as the illusory, uncontrollable guilt drives them to hate themselves and, most importantly, those who trained them in feeling guilt (the father, usually). They then set out to destroy all of those folks (including themselves). Guilt-based cultures tend to generate suicidal maniacs, while shame-based cultures tend to generate homicidal maniacs. We see exactly this dynamic between the West and the islamic world.

I believe that this is just the price of running an individualistic culture, and it is usually worth the risk … though, every so often, we will be overrun with guilt-filled idiots who will put us all at risk because of their emotional handicaps. You tie this together with people who hate our culture, like The Precedent and other black militants and marxists, and you have a witch’s brew of danger.

That’s how I see the situation, which is why I term the major delineation between the West and the rest of the world as:

Individualism/Guilt/Atonement versus Tribalism/Shame/Revenge

Using guilt is dangerous and not for the faint of heart, but I think it’s well worth it. I only hope that we can make it through this period of American hysteria and lunacy.

progressoverpeace on April 10, 2009 at 1:42 PM

Our POTUS seems to have no idea what it’s like to be an American.
