Newest source of left’s pretend fear/outrage: Tea parties

posted at 5:03 pm on April 10, 2009 by Allahpundit

Link via Ace, who seems willing to believe the fear is genuine. Maybe that’s true for the dimmer bulbs among them but for most I’m sure this is standard calculated faux-horror designed to frame the event as suspect, illegitimate, and otherwise unsuitable for mainstream political consumption. Kind of like how Olbermann is forever referring to the “far right” or the “fringe right.” For people who claim to object so profoundly to the politics of fear, they sure are good at it.

Anyway, Legal Insurrection previews the tedious, inevitable nutroots reaction to next week’s rallies:

The Huffington Post is organizing “citizen journalists” to attend the protests, allegedly to “report.” Which means that they will try to find someone in a crowd who says something stupid, will post it on the internet, and build an argument around it trying to demonize the movement. And left-wing bloggers will react in unison like dogs responding to a whistle, about the “dangerous” and “violent” and “racist” tea parties. This tactic is as old as time; or at least as old as the internet.

Follow the link to Ace up top for the latest on the scourge of insidious “anti-Obama activities” that are destroying our country from within. Meanwhile, here’s a video — swiped from a different post of Ace’s — by Andrew Klavan, the guy responsible for the Limbaugh challenge. I don’t know what made me think of adding it to a post about fake liberal outrage.

Update: The boss was all over this days ago:

It’s already happened once before — at the Denver anti-porkulus rally last month, when the Media Matters/Daily Kos crowd shifted media attention away from the policy message by manufacturing fake outrage about some stunt-puller who showed up with a sign comparing Obama to Hitler that I didn’t see and asked for a picture. The local newspaper, the Rocky Mountain News, took the bait…

As Beckel signaled, leftists are going to use fear-mongering to paint mainstream taxpayers who believe in the Second Amendment, the Constitution, limited government, low taxes, and fiscal responsibility as fringe wackos. They have already exploited the Binghamton and Pittsburgh shooting sprees for political gain. They have no shame. Be prepared. Confront them with their own rank hypocrisy and unhingedness. Don’t get distracted. And don’t let your local media get away with lazily recycling their smears.

Well, Boortz had an argument – one that he later seemed to withdraw – that the movement is inchoate and without real direction. That is, what is the specific agenda of the movement? It’s not enough to say, “We’re spending too much” or “The bailouts aren’t right.”

There has to be a systematic agenda along with the protests.

As I said, he sort of stepped back from that initial point but it’s not entirely invalid.

SteveMG on April 10, 2009 at 5:15 PM

How long has Boortz been pushing the whole FairTax business? He can’t see the forest for the trees!

Many people have pushed several alternatives to the taxation system we have in place now, and the whole “tea party” phenomenon dovetails nicely with Boortz’s agenda.

He’s no liberal, but I think Boortz is simply a little skittish about being lumped in with a movement that is seen as “angry,” and ergo directionless.

Grow a pair, Neal! In the American people want the same things you do!

Principles first…then personalities second. Trying to force focus prematurely can sideline everything in short order.

Not much has changed through the years coldwarrior. You’d probably recognize just about everything with the exception of Bozeman and Missoula, which have modernized. Wide open country in every direction; fabulous hunting and fishing; great family oriented folks.

In fact, the people here have pretty darn good survival instincts. Which would explain the sudden removal of anything OBAMA…

I agree completely.

Terrye on April 10, 2009 at 9:08 PM

Well yes, of course.

I keep searching the CBO’s site for numbers on the program and from what I can tell – as you noted – the costs so far are coming in under the projected costs.

Now, maybe they’ll explode in the next decade(s), but I have a hard time believing that the program by itself will have a $32 trillion shortage. Over what period?

We know that Medicare and SS – minus the prescription program – are tens of trillions short of full funding over the next half century. I’ve seen numbers from $40 to $80 trillion.

We’ve got huge debt problems and everyone – right left and center – have contributed to it.

Except you and me.

My wife and son just came up from the river (Yellowstone) with some fresh rainbow’s for supper. My job is to clean those babies up and get em on the grill.

Gotta love the opportunities America has provided for us my friend. Following 37 years of dedicated hard work, my wife and I have settled in on a nice piece of land with the river 100′ from our front door. I dreamed of this day most of my life. I’ll be damned if my sons don’t have the same opportunities brave heroes like yourself have fought so hard to maintain for the generations that follow.

April 15th folks, let your voices be heard!

If these protests upset the Left, then there must be something about them the Left fears, at a visceral level in intensity.
Thus, if the Left fears it, then it must be a good thing.

There will be a good number in Ohio on the 15th…a few within a short drive. I will be attending, if for no other reason than to piss off the Left.

dhunter on April 10, 2009 at 9:45 PM

Hasn’t the Court already ruled on term limits? I seem to remember they have but regardless it has always been within our power to term limit Congress. Obviously it would be easier if there was a law but the voters can do it anytime. Getting them to agree on the proper length of a term would probably be interesting.

Meanwhile look at the critique of all the Tea Party people, from the so called Democratic Patriots, remember Dissent is Patriotic…well no not in this case, average regular Americans are just misguided…it is an intellectual exercise above our understanding:)

Here we go, I warned my wife a few days ago that the Move on storm troopers were going to show up at the rallies hoisting racist signs and trying to act like they are part of the crowd. Their willing accomplices in the liberal media will be clued in and snap their pictures for the evening news proclaiming that the tea partyers are a bunch of racist rednecks in order to kill the movement.

Mark my words folks, this will happen.

But I will still be at the tea party in Conroe.

conservnut on April 10, 2009 at 10:11 PM

Cindy Munford on April 10, 2009 at 9:56 PM

Its not within our power to term limit the career pols, both parties have jerrymandered districts and set up the rules and fund raising, not to mention earmarking to make it extraordinary that a Senator or Congressman be removed. There are simply put too many voters who do not pay attention and keep voting the same maggots back in.
A cleansing is in order then Term Limits, if 8 years is enough for a President then its enough for a Congress Critter or Senate Scum.

I don’t see how a court can reconcile Term Limits for POTUS but not for the above mentioned weasels.

Hey, I am proudly far right wing. I don’t understand people who are moderate or in the middle. I see things in black or white. We have spent a $1000 on plane tickets, hotel rooms and other to go to the DC tea party. I feel that we have to stand up and have our voices heard. My husband and dad can think we are insane and say we are going to get arrested, but I don’t care. You have to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything, to quote Aaron Tippen.

I think it’s great. Finally a little fly in the lefty ointment. And they will do everything they can to taint it, marginalize it and then demonize it. Welcome to America 2009.
Is it big money? Is it ideology that drives the left? I don’t know. What I do know is Government is positioned to grow even larger (is that possible) and us in FlyOver Country (and forgive me the SOUTH) could give a rats a%% what anyone in NY, CA or DC think is good for the Country.

My opinion is, the Tea Party’s mission is telling our Government to get back to the basics and get back to representing the people that voted for them. It’s not about Obama. It’s not about Hitler. It’s not about Beck or the MSM. It’s about us lowly little taxpayers that are NOT happy about what our Government is doing and letting them know it, in peaceful assembly without the theatrical bullsh*t. It’s called honest dissent. From the heart. For our Children’s Sake.

This is America right? Organizing and assembling in still legal right?

Face it. Where the Country is being led makes a bunch of people like me want to scream. Let us be heard. And let the left do what they do, as they are expert at it. Don’t let it scare you into not showing up. It’s called Courage. We are decent, law abiding people who care.

I think it’s fabulous and will be attending in Trussville, AL. My sign will read “STOP THE MADNESS”.

They are spending us into oblivion. That is a non-partisan statement.

Huh? How the heck do you come up with this?

The “dimmer bulbs”? They are all dim on the left. Don’t you listen to them? They are legitimately scared, because the left is always scared of the truth leaking out.

There’s no doubt that they are trying to discredit this movement, but that has nothing to do with the real fear that the traitorous left has with people speaking their minds and filling in the truth for the public.

I guess you think that Fairness Doctrine isn’t motivated by the left’s fear of the truth, either?

What craptaculus et al are too ignorant to grasp is that in addition to the mid-term elections there is this wonderful tool built into the Constitution give us lowly fly-over peasants the right to recall our representatives if we feel they suck. Imagine a recall of every senator and representative who voted for porkulus and president pantywaist’s budget.

What crapulus et al fail to grasp is there is this form called a w-4 and all I have to do is note on the form that I owed no taxes and do not expect to owe taxes and no federal taxes are deducted from my paycheck. What are president pantywaist and congress going to do when the revenue stops coming in?

That’s true, but individualists have had the US as the one and only nation that supports them and stands for them. If the US goes (and I’m hoping that the US will wake from this mass hysteria soon) individualists will have nowhere left and no one supporting them, unless some other nation figures out what had made the US so successful and decides to copy it. But the structure of most cultures seems to preclude this.

I have an M1A that I built up over the years and it shoots about 3/4 to 1/2 MOA. I use a Springfield Armory scope and a Mcmillian stock. The secret of the M1A is a Krieger barrel and getting a good bed on the rifle. I would clean, shoot for sight, wipe the bore then shoot one fouling shot. The egg shot was a stunt, but fun. Having trained to shoot humans (Communists even!), I never got into hunting, just paper. Teach Combat handgun and raise my (4) boys, with only two left at home. Make money in Commercial Real Estate.

Any one hear that woman on Cavuto the other day? She feels these parties dont mean anything, they shouldnt be reported. She kept saying it was a Republican thing and we were all complaining about Obama. She was the dumbest woman I have heard on awhile.

Im in Blair co, in Pa and our tea party site got hacked. heh

She was horrible. First, she said we shouldn’t be protesting something after-the-fact – because, you know, what good does that do? Then, she complained that we were protesting something that hasn’t even happened yet.

All with that smug, lefty smile. She was an idiot.

Terrye…….three words.
Prescription Drug Benefit.
That is a Bush program projected to cost 32 trillion.
You ppl really are morons.

strangelet on April 10, 2009 at 8:36 PM

The overall projected cost of the drug benefit is $117 billion lower over the next ten years than was estimated last summer due to the slowing of drug cost trends, lower estimates of plan spending and higher rebates from drug manufacturers. Compared to original Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) projections, the net Medicare cost of the new drug benefit is $243.7 billion (or 38.5 percent) lower over the ten- year period (2004-2013) used to score the MMA.

http://www.cms.hhs.gov/apps/media/press/release.asp?Counter=2868&intNumPerPage=10&checkDate=&checkKey=2&srchType=2&numDays=0&srchOpt=0&srchData=part+d&keywordType=All&chkNewsType=1%2C+2%2C+3%2C+4%2C+5&intPage=&showAll=1&pYear=&year=0&desc=&cboOrder=date

The new Medicare prescription drug benefit will cost more than $720 billion over its first 10 years, with costs reaching $100 billion annually by 2015, according to new estimates released Tuesday by…

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/19864.php

The recently enacted Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) contains many provisions that affect the Medicare program specifically and the U.S. health sector more generally. CBO estimated that, on net, the Medicare drug benefit would increase mandatory outlays by $407 billion for fiscal years 2004 to 2013 and would raise federal revenues by $7 billion over that period. IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICY, DELIVERY OR PRACTICE: The overall effect of the assumptions on drug spending as well as the major sources of uncertainty surrounding CBOs cost estimate will also be discussed.

http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/MeetingAbstracts/ma?f=103623321.html

During five months of legislative debate, the Bush administration concealed its own projections that the legislation would actually cost between $500 billion and $600 billion.

http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=3700

Anyway, there were plenty more to choose from, but I was trying to stick to those that had higher numbers. None even approached a trillion dollars though. Can’t imagine where 32 trillion came from. That is some embellishment on the most collosal scale I’ve ever seen.

However, this is still part of the overall problem. Enough is enough. It was unacceptable then, and you better believe the dwarfing of those numbers (across the board) are unacceptable now. Times have been rough financially for most. Our collective belts have been tightened. We all have our breaking points.

Our government? It is increasing exponentially during this rough patch. I’m sure even you would recognize that you can never spend your way out of debt. This is insane and our government is out of control.

This is what these tea parties are all about.

These protests have a lot more people and are all over the country.

Message to all trolls… April 15th we will engage in civil protest across this great nation. Yes, we protest big brother socialists such as Obama & Pelosi. Yes, we will stand up for the Democracy called America.

This day we protest the socialist policies of this President and his band of radicals in Congress. On another day we will demand his removal from office, as this President will certainly fail to uphold the constitution. This President is a Narcissist, and will not be capable of living within the boundaries of our laws. This President see’s himself as something far greater than simply the potus. We have see these men before, as historians have written many books & film makers have created many films about these men. This man is his own religion, a legend in his own mind, a gift to the world.

The day will come when this man will meet with reality. The American Constitution & Bill of Rights are greater than any one man; any one group of people. The deck has been stacked, this we realize. As can be seen with the fall of the print media, Americans stumble & fall, but we get it right in the end.

Amnesty and the illegal invasion of America just might be the straw that breaks the donkeys back…

From The Telegraph, via Free Republic:

President Barack Obama has recently completed the most successful foreign policy tour since Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow.

You name it, he blew it. What was his big deal economic programme that he was determined to drive through the G20 summit? Another massive stimulus package, globally funded and co-ordinated. Did he achieve it? Not so as you’d notice.

Barack is not the first New World ingenue to discover that European leaders will load him with praise, struggle sycophantically to be photographed with him and outdo him in Utopian rhetoric. But when it comes to the critical moment of opening their wallets – suddenly it is flag-day in Aberdeen. Okay, put the G20 down to inexperience, beginner’s nerves, what you will.

On to Nato and the next big objective: to persuade the same European evasion experts that America, Britain and Canada should no longer bear the brunt of the Afghan struggle virtually unassisted. The Old World sucked through its teeth, said that was asking a lot – but, seeing it was Barack, to whom they could refuse nothing, they would graciously accede to his wishes.

So The One retired triumphant, having secured a massive contribution of 5,000 extra troops – all of them non-combatant, of course – which must really have put the wind up the Taliban, at the prospect of 5,000 more infidel cooks and bottle-washers swarming into the less hazardous regions of Afghanistan.

Keemo on April 11, 2009 at 9:10 AM

While the American press corps tell us how Obama took Europe by storm; how Europe fell in love with Michelle; how Obama’s first world tour was a huge success…. The rest of the world is laughing their asses off. The guys a rookie who’s in way over his head; at our peril…

progressives’ attitude to non-progressive dissent has always been to kill it with lies.

a progressive blog, which i will neither name nor link*, responded to the gathering of eagles effort to protect the vietnam memorial from further defacement during the semi-annual, march 2007 “antiwar” protest by comparing pro-mission, pro-troop veterans to the proto-nazi freikorps, and their message to the rhetoric of “doltcshtoss” (stabbed in the back) associated with interwar discontent amongst germans.

the blog further sought to dispute the fact that the gathering of eagles attracted upwards of thirty thousand participants, according to an unofficial estimate cited to the organizers by the dc park district based on these two flimsy counter-claims:

1) the park district doesn’t issue official crowd estimates. which, indeed they don’t – by order of democrat congressmembers aiming to protect the self-esteem of the organizers of the million man march. which is why the figure was cited as an “unofficial” estimate.

2) the attempt to “prove” that thirty thousand could not have attended consisted of going to one of the organizers’ blogs and counting the entries into the cgi-powered guestbook feature there. seriously. they came up with 1500 as a counter-claim. without having been there.

no dispute was offered against the “antiwar” protesters’ claim of having attracted over 100,000, though their presence was clearly outmatched by the goe by a third.

of course these lies and calumny were hardly nessesary, as the mainstream press coverage dedicated its coverage to portraying the veterans of goe as demented with misplaced anger and ignorance.

* the blog in question is easily influential enough within the left to be considered representative, but are so gluttonous for negative attention that it’s best to deny them the satisfaction.

a substantial part of the message brought to these events should be designed to preempt the anti-speech smears of the left.

don’t skimp on it. if you’re making signs and banners, don’t be afraid to use a whole bedsheet to say something like “PROGRESSIVES HATE DISSENT” or something like that.

make materials which get to the meat of the primary issue too, of course. but don’t be afraid to provide extras.

you’ll find that a lot of people show up with no sign to hold, and i think this issue, more than others the right has taken to the streets for, will gather a lot of passers-by.
