Fox News question of the day: Can Palin save her political career?

posted at 8:00 pm on April 10, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

At first I was surprised the Foxies would dare to ask, but then I remembered which network it was that went gaga over the anonymous sniping at her by Team Maverick.

Are we sure her career’s in trouble? Judging by the response to her appearance at that pro-life event in Indiana, the market for her has yet to soften:

Right to Life officials announced Thursday that, in addition to speaking to a sold-out crowd of 2,180 during the 6 p.m. banquet in The Centre’s Bill Brooks Exhibition Hall, Palin will appear before people paying $16 per ticket to watch a live broadcast feed in the building’s auditorium.

Right to Life officials had been working for weeks to confirm Palin’s appearance in the auditorium with theater seating, where 564 of an available 2,500 tickets have been sold.

Palin, the Republican Party’s 2008 nominee for vice president and a possible 2012 presidential candidate, will be accompanied by her husband, Todd Palin, and the couple’s baby son, Trig…

The organization announced the extra gathering when they learned Palin would join keynote speaker Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, at the sold-out banquet.

The peg for the FNC item is the ongoing freakification of her that I wrote about in the context of that Eminem video. The more tabloid nonsense washes in with the news tide, the more it erodes her credibility. (Latest chapter in the Levi/Palin feud: Sarahcuda insists that “over my dead body” would Johnston have been allowed to live with Bristol in their home.) Let’s try a patented Hot Air poll on this slow news night to see where you’re at on the question of career-saving. Option three is there mainly for our three lefty trolls. I’m more curious to see the split between options one and two. If you choose the latter, feel free to explain in the comments what you have in mind.

BTW, neither Biden nor his performance at the debate had a thing to do with Barack winning the election.

Jenfidel on April 12, 2009 at 5:37 AM

From the KC Star article:

In the CBS poll, of the uncommitted voters, 18% now say they will vote Obama/Biden, 10% now say McCain/Palin.

Once again, your assertions are at odds with the facts in evidence.

Campaigns are entirely about majority opinion.
JohnGalt23 on April 12, 2009 at 5:35 AM

Campaigns are glorified soap commercials:
“Buy Candidate X because he’ll get your laundry cleaner than Candidate Y.”
They are about as useful, truthful and reality-based, too.

Only problem is that Republicans run clean, honest campaigns and DemocRAts don’t and haven’t since JFK.

Jenfidel on April 12, 2009 at 5:43 AM

No. Biden won because he moved the electorate in his direction, something you have made clear that you don’t think is important.

You’ve made it clear that thinking for yourself is not important. Ayn Rand would be proud.

Actually, even amateurs usually care about electoral victory. I guess I should say it’s the mark of the politically ignorant.

Whereas you’re politically savvy, due to your job mopping up the bathroom at Pottery Barn. I can see where you’d pick these things up.

The first bit of wisdom I’ve heard from the Cult Of Sarah yet.

JohnGalt23 on April 12, 2009 at 5:46 AM

Going by the logic of “JohnGalt23,” nothing that John McCain or Sarah Palin said or did during the election has any significance whatsoever, because they got about 7% less of the popular vote. In the words of the 20th Century’s greatest thinker, “I won. I will trump you on that.” And yet he’s not an authoritarian.

Let me ask you, do you really think that the McCain campaign internal polls showed anything different?

JohnGalt23 on April 12, 2009 at 5:48 AM

Don’t worry, JohnGaltAxelrod!
I have a feeling that after 4 years of suffering under Ogabe, the American electorate is going to expect a lot more from the 2012 presidential campaign than a glorified soap commercial.

More Info on Palin’s reasons for taking the Stimulus Money, and a little tidbit about her willingness to compromise on another important issue:

From Sean Cockerham in Juneau –

Gov. Sarah Palin told news media here this morning she’s willing to accept the federal economic stimulus money — if legislators agree to use some of it to replace state spending.

“We can back out state (general fund) dollars and replace them with stimulus dollars…I’ll feel better about it because then those dollars won’t just be additional dollars they’ll be replacement dollars,” Palin said.

Palin made her comments in a wide ranging “availability” with reporters this morning, in which she also talked about subjects including abortion, the rejection of her state Senate appointee, and Levi Johnston, the father of her grandchild.

Palin said she still has problems with the stimulus money but it’s clear to her that legislators want to take it all. Palin could still veto or refuse to spend the money if she wanted, but she doesn’t seem inclined to do so at this point.

Palin said her administration has identified $250 million in state spending that could be replaced with stimulus money. She said she plans to meet with legislators this afternoon to argue that doing so would be legal and technically feasible.

On abortion, Palin said she’s now willing to compromise on a bill that would require parents to give their permission before girls under age 17 could get an abortion.

Palin said she’s willing to drop the requirement for consent and just accept a bill that would require parents to be notified about their teenager’s plan to have an abortion.

Palin said late last month she was not interested in the compromise.

But she said this morning it’s clear to her now that’s the only way to possibly get the bill passed, with just nine days left in the 2009 session of the Legislature.

Palin also talked about the rejection of her state Senate pick, Joe Nelson, and the media furor around statements made by Levi Johnston, who has been going on national TV talk shows.

She’s trying to run a state here, and resisted the stimulus initially. The legislature wants it. She seems pragmatic to me.

Because you asked, it still doesn’t matter, but…
while Sarah kicked Biden’s butt, McCain did pretty badly in his debates with Ogabe and let multiple opportunities slip by to attack the empty suit’s position on the issues, past (non)voting record in the Senate and IL legislature and his personal history of associating with terrorists, criminals and preachers who spew Marxist Black Liberation “Theology” poison about hating America, white people and being in the middle class.

Just curious what your experiences were.

Daemonocracy on April 12, 2009 at 7:16 AM

Did you miss the part where I said she instituted a hiring freeze? That is a control of spending and government growth right there. She also cut $238 million from the budget.

WOW! “Hiring freeze” Try FIRING people. WOW! NJ Democratic Governor Corzine cut spending $500 Million. Yawn.

But she needs Legilative approval before she starts restructuring the government. I listened to her April 10th news conference and it was all about what agreements her and the legislature can come to.

So the governors job is not to bring in revenue? Really? Then why do good governors cut property and business taxes? Could it be to attract business which in return…gives the state revenue?

ROFLMAO! She needs legislative approval to cut spending but not taxes? WTF are you talking about?

How can a governor manage a government if the state has no revenue because the governor doesn’t think it is his/her job to help bring in revenue?

Who has no revenue? Alaska? WRONG they have LESS revenue, that means you ADAPT, cut spending, fire government workers ect.. Government should be getting smaller, more efficient more privatized and less of a tax burden ALL THE TIME, not just when it is politically “convenient”.

She stood against her party when it came to the issue of ethics. That is an accomplishment in my book and shows character. It is a real issue, so real in fact that nearly every single attack the left unleashed on her was at her character. They still to this day are trying to bring down her character and credibility.

This is a bullshit populist myth…

Mean Girl (Salon)

WTF are “ethics”? What you believe? What Palin believes? What the people she is accussing believe? Either something is legal or illegal by the law. Social Conservatives love subjective debates about “ethics” not realizing they all have completely different meanings for this word because it cannot be defined objectively. Ethics are about “morals” a RELIGIOUS term that has NOTHING to do with government. It is unblievable the obsession with ridiculousness.

but Alaska is a different kind of state than most. They are still a frontier state, under development and rely heavily on federal money to exist. I don’t like pork going there, but inevitably a lot of it will have to go there.

Are you kidding me? Alaska gets over 80% of its funding from energy taxes. Yet they are 49 out of 50 in welfare spending that is a problem of GOVERNMENT. No TRUE fiscal conservative is going to make excuses for Federal assistance.

and you didn’t answer my question, who is your candidate of choice?

Daemonocracy on April 12, 2009 at 5:14 AM

79% of uncommitted voters did not believe Palin won the VP Debate (CBS News / Knowledge Networks)

These are the voters that mattered most, therefore she lost BIG TIME. The fact that Palintologists continue on with their delusional fantasies while ignoring ALL reality and just keep repeating their fantasies to each other is typical cult like behavior. Clyde5445 on April 12, 2009 at 10:07 AM

What’s interesting to me about Sarah is just how she is STILL drawing keen attention. There is absolutely no doubt that she caught fire. Love her or hate her, people do love to talk about her.

The other thing that fascinates me is that she could emerge as a new type of conservative. I suppose I’m naive, but I found her pro-life position palatable and didn’t think she’d go out of her way to make that a focus of anything had she won the VP slot. So her position on that issue didn’t prevent me from voting Republican for the first time in my entire life.

From the minute she stepped on stage, she was compared to Obama. I found that to be hilarious, since she was the VP candidate. Obviously, people really did know full well that Obama had zip experience.

Anyway, the entire Palin story is fascinating to me. I just plain like her. I watched the debate and got a kick out of her. She handled Biden quite well. I think there was maybe one question she wasn’t clear on, but she parlayed it into something else. Biden was muddy on several issues, too. When she was muddy, people called her stupid. When he was muddy, people gave him a pass. That’s pure sexism, in my opinion.

So I’ll be watching her. I can’t wait to see what she decides to do.

Palin stiffs the House Republicans
January 31, 2009 7:34 PM

“When House Republicans planned their annual winter retreat, they extended an invitation to Alaska Gov. Sara Palin, hoping the party’s 2008 vice presidential nominee would give a morale-building speech to the more than 130 Republican members of Congress gathered this weekend in Hot Springs, Va.

Retreat organizers tell ABC News that Palin politely declined, giving a perfectly understandable reason.

According to the Congressional Institute, which hosted the conference, Palin said she simply could not make it to the retreat because pressing state business made it impossible for her to leave Alaska this weekend.

So where is Palin this weekend? She’s in Washington, D.C., attending the super-elite Alfalfa Dinner.

“She lied to us,” said a Republican at the retreat.”

Hey Palintologists…two things for you to know:

1) Contrary to what you think, today is NOT the day set aside to celebrate the coming of the wonderous, glorious, beautiful, intelligent, and just durn purdy Sarah Palin.

2) If a fellow Palintologist cultist comes to you and says “Hey, Sarah says we should all drink this kool-aid. She says it will take us to the promised land”, just run like hell.

Informative, which is a nice contrast to what this thread has degenerated to.

I’ve argued with Poptech in the past, but I’m done with him. He can’t be honest about anything, as the patented phony resumes make clear, but just posts the same old crap over and over again. It’s a waste of time to engage him.

Wall seems to just enjoy taunting people.

My issue with these is not that they disagree with me. I’m used to disagreement, and for much more intelligent reasons. My issue is that they destroy any useful commentary on issues. Who wants to read a discussion about Palin’s actual strengths and weaknesses when all you’re going to get is the oft-repeated hearsay that someone didn’t think Palin knew that Africa was a continent, or that she never reads any newspapers, or that she didn’t graduate from an accredited college.

I think Sarah Palin has huge potential. Unlike Obama, who has been groomed for everything he’s ever done in politics, to the extent of opponents being disqualified and/or smeared, we have Sarah Palin, who got no help from her own party when she ran for governor.

There may yet be a better candidate than Palin, but so far it doesn’t look like it.

On the other hand, it’s less than 3 months into Obama’s administration. Who knows what the next few years will bring?

And no, neither Palin or Obama are the Messiah. Just curious about the poorly-constructed analogy you dropped on this thread.

cs89 on April 12, 2009 at 1:24 PM

I was scrolling through twitter when I saw LiveDesk ask this stupid question. The pretense was that extraneous statements made by Levi Johnston. Why would something that silly kid said harm Palin’s political career?

The woman has a track record of achievements as governor. The rest of this BS is just BS.

Shouldn’t a more appropriate question have been directed toward Biden’s political career? You know, that liar that did get the VP slot? Maybe they should examine his coke snortin’ daughter’s activities instead of worrying about Levi and Bristol.

Are we to assume that you share Dr. Paul’s beliefs and values or was it just a job?

It was more than a job… it was b**w job!! :)

(Sorry, I could resist.)

Did I share his beliefs and values?

I’ll put it this way…

It was the first time in my campaign career that I can say I liked most of what my candidate said and stood for. Usually, you work professionally for a campaign, and your opinions and beliefs get put in a “lockbox” until Election Day. I never felt that way with Ron Paul or his campaign.

Ron is a strict Christian, though, and I’m a practicing Catholic. I keep practicing, but still I don’t get any better at it.

I dislike Ron Paul intensely

Odd. Your preferred candidate has a different opinion of Dr. Paul. Or at least she used to.

and the Paultards are a cult,

I thought so too, until I ran into the Palintologists.

JohnGalt23 on April 12, 2009 at 1:56 PM

It really doesn’t matter who wins the nomination in 2012; any of the mainstream candidates will lose to Obama except for Ron Paul, the only man who can take back the White House and save America.

You worked for Paul? Was it really like a cult? i’m interested in hearing about your experience. I saw an interview with Ron Paul where he was kind of hiding from his own supporters and even admitted that sometimes they weirded him out. lol. Not my words, his. Just curious what your experiences were.

Yeah, I had the honor of working on his Presidential campaign for a number of months.

It was the time of my life, but I’m not sure I’d do it again. (Presidential campaigns, that is. I’d work for RP in a heartbeat, but Presidential campaigns are really stressful. I’ll stick to statewide and below probably.)

And yes, there was a cult-like aspect to it. You really have to divide the campaign into two groups., and each of those groups in two.

First, there was the grassroots. These folks were, by and large, crazy, either in a good or bad way. Most of them were just really fervent. Lots of people carrying guns and gold 24 hours a day. Lot of heavy pro-lifers. Lot of anti-immigration people. For the most part, the activists were cool, and really productive. But still crazy.

But there were some who were off the deep end. People with definite white supremacist tendencies. The black helicopter crowd. Toss in some ZOG types, and 9/11 truthers, and they could be downright dangerous, politically. They were a small minority of the grassroots, but they had a knack of popping up at really embarrassing times.

But there was a real cult-like feeling among most of both types of them. Far too many people had trouble separating the man’s ideas, which were brilliant, IMHO, from the man, who even he would admit lacks a lot of skills the candidate needs. Any mention of his shortcomings would enrage a lot of these people, to the point where you couldn’t reason with them. (Gee, sounds familiar.)

Then there was the paid campaign staff. They also fell into two groups. First, you had a lot of people who got hired because of their status within the meetup groups. Some of them were top notch, usually people who had experience with politics prior to the Paul campaign. For example, the guys I worked with ran the local meetup group, and they were great. One guy had worked on Paul’s 1988 campaign, and the other had done gun politics in another state. As such, they could look at things objectively, as pros have to do, and not get caught up in the rah-rah cult culture.

Unfortunately, a lot of the people picked from the meetup groups had never done politics, and it showed. They were the types who thought waving signs won people over to your cause, or thought it was a great idea to mention to volunteers as they walked in the door how the primaries were really fixed. They had no idea about organizing, GOTV efforts, or the importance of the public’s opinions of your candidate. They, much like the Palintologists, thought that his ideas would simply carry us through to victory. And boy, were they p**sed at the public when they didn’t respond the way they should have.

And then there were the professionals, either Paul’s full-time people from his Congressional office staff and his campaign people, and the hired guns, like me. For the most part, these people were killer. They understood about the long hours of a campaign, how to properly do events, the importance of a field program and GOTV(my specialty), and how to keep your candidate from looking like an idiot. Truth be told, for all the weirdness even among the pros (and there was some), those people as a whole were better campaign folk then a lot of the Giuliani and McCain people I met along the way. And I say that with a professional eye, not as a Paulbearer. Although, to be fair, the Romney people were the best I saw. I guess money really does make a difference.

Unfortunately, as I stated upthread, pros really don’t like hooking up with a cultish campaign. I tried to bring in colleagues who could have used the work, and would have helped the campaign immeasurably, but they wanted to stay away from the weird grassroots people, because working on a campaign like that can give you a reputation as a loose cannon. I didn’t care… he was my guy, and I was out in front for him publicly anyways. But good people were chased away, and that hurt.

And the Palin campaign, with the Cult Of Sarah as demonstrated here, will probably suffer the fate.
