Pushing immigration reform in a recession?
posted at 10:14 am on April 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The New York Times reports that Barack Obama will push for immigration reform, including legalizing illegal immigrants, as a top priority this year. He expects plenty of pushback, and he’ll get it. With America bleeding jobs at the moment and unemployment at 8.5% and rising, the sympathy for blessing those who drive wages downward will not flow easily. But is Obama serious, or just pandering?
While acknowledging that the recession makes the political battle more difficult, President Obama plans to begin addressing the country’s immigration system this year, including looking for a path for illegal immigrants to become legal, a senior administration official said on Wednesday.
Mr. Obama will frame the new effort — likely to rouse passions on all sides of the highly divisive issue — as “policy reform that controls immigration and makes it an orderly system,” said the official, Cecilia Muñoz, deputy assistant to the president and director of intergovernmental affairs in the White House.
Mr. Obama plans to speak publicly about the issue in May, administration officials said, and over the summer he will convene working groups, including lawmakers from both parties and a range of immigration groups, to begin discussing possible legislation for as early as this fall.
Some White House officials said that immigration would not take precedence over the health care and energy proposals that Mr. Obama has identified as priorities. But the timetable is consistent with pledges Mr. Obama made to Hispanic groups in last year’s campaign.
That priority list gives a clue about where immigration reform will wind up in 2009. Congress has already told Obama that he can’t have both health-care reform and cap-and-trade in the same year. If immigration reform gets prioritized below cap-and-trade, it won’t come up at all.
In fact, the kind of legalization process envisioned by Obama will be even less popular now than when it got derailed in 2007. Two years ago, unemployment was low and the economy was humming along. Some people bought into the “jobs Americans won’t do” argument. Now, Americans want those jobs, and as a recent study shows, they can get better wages when the government does its job and enforces immigration law. They’re not going to cheer while the people who crossed the border illegally and took jobs while driving wages down get rewarded for those efforts.
Obama may want to push this in 2009 in order to avoid doing it in an election year. No matter what happens on immigration reform, it’s unlikely to increase anyone’s popularity. We saw that in good economic times, and that will be doubly true in a recession. While Obama may have that kind of political capital, Congress does not, especially the House. Democrats elected in traditionally conservative districts will lose those seats in 2010 if they push Obama’s view of immigration reform, while Obama doesn’t have to face voters for another two years. It could provide a game-changer for the mid-terms, and even Nancy Pelosi has to be smart enough to know that.
Addendum: The Times notes one House member who clearly doesn’t understand the concept of civil rights:
Anticipating opposition, Mr. Obama has sought to shift some of the political burden to advocates for immigrants, by encouraging them to build support among voters for when his proposal goes to Congress.
That is why Representative Luis V. Gutierrez, a Democrat from Mr. Obama’s hometown, Chicago, has been on the road most weekends since last December, traveling far outside his district to meetings in Hispanic churches, hoping to generate something like a civil rights movement in favor of broad immigration legislation.
Illegal immigrants do not have a “civil right” to normalization. The Civil Rights Movement worked to protect the rights of American citizens that had been denied through state and federal government action and inaction. No foreigner is entitled to American citizenship, but we offer it when people meet certain conditions — like respecting our laws and emigrating properly to the US. How embarrassing is it that a member of Congress can’t figure out the difference?

Obama is pushing for so much so fast because he knows his time is limited. He has only a certain window to make his name as a “transformational” president, which is what he so desperately needs.
He’ll fail precisely because he’s pushing so fast.

Embarrassing and common. Bobo is like that cartoon character who went around (and around) pulling both pistols from his holster and randomly shooting at nothing at all. He flies in, shoots off (his mouth), and then high-tails it his next disaster-in-the-making. Someone really needs to take that holster away from him.

Perhaps one of Obam…uhhh…’s famously competent advisors told him that all immigrants are rich so he can tax them to pay for universal(ly bad) healthcare.

Ed, don’t quibble on the semantics. The real nugget is that they are traveling round the country radicalizing and organizing, so one day in May there’ll be huge protests, followed by editorials in NYT about the deplorable conditions of the illegals, and voila, the Dear Leader will pull the permanent majority rabbit out of his hat.

This is a non-start, but it still needs to get push back, or it may coast through.

While all of these policies being tossed out on the table all at once is dizzying, it’s kind of nice to know where Obama and the Democrats stand on these issues.
It frustrated me to no end when the Democrats took control of Congress with “conservative” candidates. Then the “conservative” Democrats voted pretty much in lock step with Pelosi. That wolf in the sheep’s clothing sort of thing.
It might be refreshing in 2010 to be able to say “This is what the Democrats want. If you,the voters, want it too, keep voting for them. If not, cast a ballot for a Republican.”
Of course, that will only work if we run conservative Republicans.

Think about it like they do. It’s actually a brilliant plan. However many millions of votes they do lose with this amnesty, they get Twenty Million from the illegals they want to bring in. Especially if they can get them all registered to vote by 2010, doesn’t matter what real Americans say.
Of course, this will lead to blood. I don’t think real Americans would ever accept this usurpation of America by far leftists and Mexico.

Some one in the Republican party that is either retireing or has a seat that is not in jeopardy should push for legislation that not only registers illegals into the system, but the first priority is to get them a union job. Push to place them into the auto factories, steel mills, and dock workers that are the heart of the labor unions.
If democrats want a free voting block that puts nothing more than a further fiscal burden on this nations welfare policies, I say elevate them to a “union-status” so they will contribute immeadiatly to the tax base instead of being a burden to it—-and watch the “worker-base” implode.

Brat4life on April 9, 2009 at 10:41 AM
I cannot believe that Obama is pushing this. After all, he is supposed to be the most brilliant politician we ever had! If he does push for immigration “reform,” his approval rating will quickly fall below 50 percent as no amount of teflon will be able to protect him from the fury of those having the quint idea that our country actually belongs to those legally here.
If anyone was under the illusion that Obama respects the U.S. for what it is today, this should destroy that. Obama, in common with the rest of the far left, wishes to so transform the U.S. that in ten years it would be unrecognizable except for its name.

I know exactly what you speak of. I am a “Manassholian”. I have been such (and in the same house) since 1991. My neighborhood is a joke nowadays. For some reason though, nobody messes with the last white guy on the block. Maybe it’s the targets and firearms they see me carrying back and forth from the car to the house.
I live about a half mile from this 7-11.
The sign behind this woman was (maybe still is) in Old Town Manassas for a LONG time in violation of zoning ordinances. The city let it stand because they were afraid to be labeled as bigots.
How can Obama pass amnesty AND universal un-healthful care in the same time frame. No one even knows how many illegals we have. Is it 10M, 15M, 30M???? You can’t put a price tag on it.

That said, I don’t know if anything will be able to stop the freight train this time. Dems are desperate to create a permanent electoral majority and this is one of their trump cards. 2010 may be the last chance for the GOP for a long long time. 12 million new Dem voters would seriously blunt whatever edge the GOP might have in voter angst.

Buddahpundit on April 9, 2009 at 11:03 AM
My guess for why he’s pushing so fast is that he learned the wrong lessons from the Clinton administration’s first two years, where they had a Democratic Congress.
Clinton repeatedly went very far left during that timeframe despite getting elected as a centrist. (Raising taxes despite running on a middle-class tax cut, bringing up gays in the military *after* he got elected when it was never a major issue before, HillaryCare, etc.)
The result of that was the Republican Revolution, which lost them the House for 10 years and the Senate for most of that time period (They held the Senate narrowly between 2001 and 2003 due to “Jumping” Jim Jeffords).
Instead of thinking “The Clintons went too far too fast, I should be subtle about what I’m doing”, Obama’s taken the “shock and awe” approach. If it doesn’t work, the Dems will be completely dead in the water for 2010 and, if he doesn’t change, *he’ll* be dead in the water for 2012 no matter what ACORN pulls.

About 10 days ago an article appeared in the San Diego Tribune talking about how unions are promoting the idea of amnesty..
This is at the same time union employees are getting layed off in every state in the union..
Wonder how those workers would feel about someone being given amnesty, thus free to compete in the workplace, while they struggle?

My neighborhood has been ruined by the influx of illegals. The strip malls are dirty with trash and graffiti, dogs run around unleashed and people pushing carts selling all manner of food and drinks are all over the place. Houses have two or three families in them and five or six cars parked. They don’t seem to like trees very much as they remove them and put in concrete for all their cars.
But, it is not just the illegals they will get to vote for them. All of a sudden, people of hispanic descent are more concerned with their people than with their fellow American citizens. Those people will vote for whoever gives them amnesty.
We are standing at a precipice, placed here by the idiots who pay no attention to the real world and voted in this travesty, the TP-Prez. Amnesty may be what sends us over the edge into a freefall.

It has nothing to do with law, or civil rights. Those are all subjective, in the Left’s opinion.

The 1986 amnesty also promised to close the border and the Democratic congress wouldn’t, so now we have 12 million plus illegals. Why should I trust the government again? Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Get ready for the defeat-proof socialist congress, because its coming.
Obama aims to have a sizable chunk of our illegal invader friends voting in the 2010 mid-terms, citizens or not. Why do you think he has made ACORN literally a part of his administration?
When you combine that with the overall demographic shift away from conservatism over the last 30 years, we’re screwed.

It wouldn’t do any good. They wouldn’t care enough to read it.

Great! Let’s push through free healthcare then push through all these illegal aliens so they can bankrupt us into oblivion. The Obama/Reid/Pelosi axis of fiscal evil’s brilliance is blinding. (sarc)

For whatever reason, both my posts were lost, but the Japanese call their border patrol “G-Men” and sometimes send a camera crew along on their busts to show on national tv.
You can watch one here. There’s a graph at 1:50ish. That’s how much the illegals in Japan have decreased since 1992.

Bad Move indeed. Obama is out of his mind flagrantly attempting to stuff the ballot boxes with dems from now on. Texas will be like Kosovo.
That is the one issue that could cause the kooks to go in the streets heavily armed. Rewarding cheaters is an awful bad plan in so many ways.

BO’s policies and programs continue to march this country to the point of socialism and beyond. Don’t think that we have the time to wait for elections. Besides, this is not a Dem or Rep issue, it is an issue for all who still believe in the values that made this country great. It is time to put the Fed Government back in its place and reduce its size. Those who prefer a government to tell them how to live their lives, well, Cuba is only a short trip away. Enjoy.

This is likely true, but all his opposition lacks to become a real force is a rallying cry that resonates with the American people. I think Obama is making the classic mistake of giving his opposition a lifeline here.

Nah… they would just vote yes and blame everything on Bush later….

This will blow up in his face, badly. Remember, the guy is a complete idiot. And so are his supporters.
What part of “No” and “HELL NO” do they not get?

UNBELIEVABLEFoolishness
CHANGE WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN
The Audacity of Brazen Disregard for Rule of Law
Obama and the Destruction of OUR Constitutional Government
May Obama choke on his own vanity.
Damn if we WON’T fight Obama on this to win again ourselves! He’ll be out FULL FORCE corrupting our means and measures, so prepare to pull out ALL the plugs and steer clear of Obama’s ILLEGAL bomb fields set against US Citizens.
Impeach! Begin a series of impeachments. Obama has set his course against our national interests. Drag Obama into open defense of his illegal measures against the US Constitution and against US citizens. Force Obama to spread out his efforts so as to dillute his affect in each instance.

Ah, they (Congress and the Executive branch) have nothing better to do, so they should tidy up the immigration mess.
