Is Levi fair game?

posted at 2:55 pm on April 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We’ve noted the Levi Johnston saga, especially his post-breakup appearance on Tyra Banks, here at Hot Air.  Normally, the kind of celebrity-dish interviews Banks offers would not create much of a stir with political writers, but Levi Johnston isn’t your average celebrity, and his tell-all about the Palins has some of her supporters mightily annoyed.  Erick Erickson got some flack for writing this as a criticism of Levi:

Below is the actual Levi — no preppy clothes. No polish. Just good old boy who knocked up the Governor’s daughter. Not exactly the image Tyra Banks and he would like you to think about.

What’s even more creepy is that the other person in the picture is his sister. And, as if lifted from the pages of Deliverance, she has his name tattooed on her back finger. Think about that one for a minute.

That prompted return fire from Tommy Christopher, who most recently took on the Daily Kos for smearing conservatives, for leaving a strong implication of an incestuous relationship:

This is not some anonymous, black helicopter freeper accusing Levi Johnston.  It’s the managing editor of Redstate, as identifiable on the right as Daily Kos is on the left.  The irresponsibility here is extreme.

I really don’t get it, there’s plenty of legit garbage to throw at Levi and company.  Why risk this kind of loose talk?  Are there any Redstate readers who are unsure whether to hate Levi?  And why demonize guns?  That seems highly counter-intuitive.

I e-mailed Erick this morning, and he said he was aiming for an Angelina Jolie vibe.  I’ll take Erick’s word for that, but even so, he miscalculated.  All of us whiff from time to time, and I know Erick wants to help defend the Palins from the media’s attacks, but this was the wrong execution of the idea.

In fact, I think a lot of people miss the point with Levi.  Both sides seem to have forgotten that these are very young people who obviously have little experience in interpersonal relationships.  The Left forgot that during the election when they pilloried Bristol (and her mother) for not getting an abortion and demanding to know whether Bristol used birth control — which was really none of anyone else’s business.  Some of us are missing it now when we attack Levi personally, rather than just criticize his caddish “kiss and tell” appearances for what they are.

Maybe we should just let the Palins and the Johnstons work out this family feud, and both sides should refrain from calling Levi a redneck and Bristol a slut.  They’re neither; they’re just two young adults who are obviously in over their heads.  Maybe the families should stop feeding the media and let the two work this out quietly, and maybe we can help by tuning out Tyra and the rest of the gossip-mongers.

Ignore it…with luck, it will go away.

coldwarrior on April 9, 2009 at 2:59 PM

Yes, Ed, work this out quietly, from the Tyra Banks show.

Now, Tommy is upset about the Redneck references, but did he excoriate the press for the Sarah is the mother reference?

originalpechanga on April 9, 2009 at 3:00 PM

The moment Levi appeared on the Tyra Banks Show, he became fair game. You don’t want your private life discussed, don’t go on a television show to talk about it.

HornetSting on April 9, 2009 at 3:01 PM

The sad thing for Levi is the liberal media is just using him like they used Megan McCain. As soon as they are done with him, they will toss him aside, maybe to bring back for another day, when say, Palin runs for something?

Someday, he will grow up and have to be an adult so he can be a father to his child. Hopefully he will come to his senses soon.

So far, the 15 minutes of fame people get for doing these types of things don’t end up too well.

Proud Rino on April 9, 2009 at 3:02 PM

Some of us are missing it now when we attack Levi personally, rather than just criticize his caddish “kiss and tell” appearances for what they are.

I somewhat agree. However, airing out the personal stuff on a gossip show (Tyra Banks), opens hims to personal attack for such a terrible decision.

In a later CBS interview, he said he was open to modeling and acting jobs that might be created by his appearance on these tell all shows. He makes himself a REALLY big target.

I am not big on going after kids but he stuck himself out there and there is bound to be backlash. It would have been nice if he had given his son some thought but I am pretty sure right now it is all about Levi.

Cindy Munford on April 9, 2009 at 3:06 PM

If Levi had stayed off the talk show circuit I would have said to leave him alone. But as soon as he went public, he became a legit target. So now Levi needs to put on his big boy pants and take what is coming to him. He will have his fifteen minutes until the press is bored of him. Then all he will have left is the wreckage of his reputation from it.

Hawthorne on April 9, 2009 at 3:06 PM

Yeah. He’s 19, he’s, let’s face it, not that bright, and he’s believing a lot of nonsense getting thrown his way (modeling jobs?)

Believe me, he’ll be punished enough by having to live with this scrutiny, the embarrassment he will almost certainly feel, and the “hey aren’t you that guy…” kinda stuff he’ll get for the rest of his life.

I have stated many times that Bristol and Levi are poor, dumb, children who had the misfortune of not being brought up properly by responsible parents that actually put family first.

Bristol and Levi should not be targets…not even that pyschotic sister of Levi.

And I dont care about Levi’s meth-peddling trashy mom.

But sarah palin has her own religious following. She preaches abstinence and her followers delude themselves that she is POTUS material. She is a public person. And now we find out that Abstinence Woman and her husband let her kids run wild and after their daughter got knocked up, allowed the unmarried kids to shack up in her own home with her OK. That is hypocrisy of the first order. And all the Not2brights and “ReligiousZealouts” with their flailing away at the Bible can help them.

I’m torn here.

On the one hand he’s just a kid being used and manipulated by a fearful MSM who are grasping at anything to hurt Gov. Palin.

On the other hand, he’s old enough to know what he was getting into by going public with all of this.

If elections have consequences, so does going on a media tour bad mouthing the mother of your baby.

BTW and just MHO, but it wasn’t Erick Ericson who created “a strong implication of an incestuous relationship” – that would the sister who has her brother’s name tattooed on her hand/finger and comes along on the media tour to defend her brother and attack Bristol and Gov. Palin.

Religious_Zealot on April 9, 2009 at 3:09 PM

Levi made himself a target when he decided to go so very public.
Had he merely walked off into the sunset, never to be heard from again, he would still be a cad, but he wouldn’t be fair game.

Whaddaya mean “used Megan McCain” [or as I call her, "Meh-gan"]? She’s still in full “use” mode. She taped Tyra Banks earlier this week, appeared on Campbell Brown’s Bias/Bullfest yesterday, and is going to be on Alan Colmes’ radio show tonight. She’s still blissfully unaware she’s eventually going to hit the same brick wall among her new MSM friends her father did.

petunia on April 9, 2009 at 3:14 PM

Levi came out and blasted his child’s mother and grandmother. He is 18. Bristol went in front of the cameras, told her piece, but never resulted in insulting the father of her child. She in fact, was complimentary towards him.
Her comments with Greta had nothing insulting to say towards anyone.
Levi is the one that needs growing up. He is absolutely fair game.

The Wall on April 9, 2009 at 3:08 PM

First of all, raising your kids to practice abstinence isn’t an assurance that they will. All any parent can do is raise their children to be responsible, moral, hard working and productive members of society, but raising and training them up in that way isn’t an assurance that they will follow the teachings of their parents.

Secondly, you assume that fame hungry Levi is being honest when he says that he was allowed to shack up with Bristol. For all we know Levi was having problems at home and the Palins allowed him to stay in their home but not in Bristol’s room, and he’s lying about it because it makes a better story and he obviously has an axe to grind.

Kid or not, he’s bitter about something, or he wouldn’t be on Tyra’s talk show. If he’d broken up with Bristol and truly wanted to move on, he wouldn’t be slamming her, the mother of his son, to the press. It’s more likely that she realized he was a loser, broke it off, and he’s pissed and wants to make her pay — thus, trashing her and her family. Anyone who would lower themselves to the point where they are airing their dirty laundry on national television automatically loses credibility, IMHO.

Also, Ed, I admire you a lot, but encouraging conservatives to not fight back in the face of trash talk and personal smears is one reason the Republican party is in shambles. We want to be nice and do the right thing, and in doing so we don’t stand up for ourselves. Fighting back doesn’t have to be a nasty, mudslinging affair; there are ways to nobly fight a smear machine, but sitting down and shutting up and knowing our place isn’t going to get the job done. We’ve done that long enough and, IMHO, is one reason Obama won the last election. We were too afraid to speak the truth about him.

Can’t make it through one thread without derailing onto an anti-Palin rant? You are a sad, sad little man.

BadgerHawk on April 9, 2009 at 3:32 PM

I posted this on a different thread maybe it needs to be on this one.

HotAir contributors, please ignore the trolls and vow not to respond to the childish rantings, subhuman intellect and other rantings of the insane, from this day forward!

Please vow by replying I Vow, in the thread!

I thank those whom are actually trying. Notice it isn’t as bad this time around!

1. Sure, Levi’s being exploited.

2. Levi’s exploitation by others does not make him immune to criticism for allowing himself to be exploited.

3. I’m convinced one phone call from Bristol could have prevented Levi’s little media tour. Bristol needs to make that phone call.

4. Gov. Palin needs to deliver a kick-ass speech in Indiana next Thursday and do a “Sunday show” soon so that people can remember she’s a working elected official and a former candidate for VPOTUS and not “the lady with the teen daughter who got pregnant who now won’t let her partner see the child.”

5. The MSM needs to burn in hell for a very long time for the way they continue to treat the Palins (and the Johnstons).

Where is this punks dad at??

We know where he isn’t: kicking his son’s behind for dishonoring the mother of his child.

Show men ONE example of “the left” criticizing Bristol Palin for not getting an abortion.

Tom_Shipley on April 9, 2009 at 3:30 PM

For one, there was that website that pretended to be written by Bristol’s in utero baby that asked to be aborted rather than raised by two trailer trash teen who were forced by grandma and McCain to get married.

Never too early to be exposed as a jerk when that is the correct call based on behavior demonstrated. Case closed this jerk deserves no more exposure if he had any class he would tell the media to beat it.

Tyra wanted to help distract from Obama’s screwups. What better way than to launch an attack on the popular Sarah Palin.

jediwebdude on April 9, 2009 at 3:36 PM

I guess we just need to accept the fact that the left is never going to give up their favorite sport, which is bashing Sarah Palin, her husband, her kids, her hunting skills, her tan, her interviews, her political views, or her would-be in-laws. It’s really quite sad. But it won’t stop, and if the poor dear does decide to run for president, she can only expect it to get worse. What did she do to deserve all this? Nothing. As for Levi, he acted like a cad. Bristol’s mother did what comes naturally…she defended her daughter. I hope it doesn’t keep getting attention because it does a lot of damage to people, and this guy may end up wanting to be a part of the child’s life and at some point will have to have a civil relationship with the mother.. so it would be really sad if the Tyra Bank’s of the world had a part in screwing that up.

scalleywag on April 9, 2009 at 3:36 PM

Levi and Megham should do a tour together. It could be called the Spotlight Seeking Idiots being used by the Liberal Media Tour.

kingsjester on April 9, 2009 at 3:22 PM

To long , it should be “The new majority”.

the_nile on April 9, 2009 at 3:37 PM

Ed, thanks for posting a balanced piece.

I’d like for Levi to be left alone, but he makes it hard when he allows himself to be pushed into saying Palin “lied.” The Palin family have a right to defend themselves against smears and lies, and if the Johnstons either lie directly or allow a misleading article to be published I think Palin has to address it.

We don’t know the truth of exactly what happened, and frankly it’s none of our business. However, if CBS & co. want to use this to hurt Palin’s political career, some of the mud will have to get churned around for a while.

Bravo, who said chivalry was dead. I bet Tyra Banks doesn’t know the meaning of the word. I see her as the biggest opportunist in this situation.

Tom_Shipley on April 9, 2009 at 3:30 PM

Took me five seconds on Google to find this site suggesting that Sarah Palin herself was a candidate for a “postnatal abortion.”

Is that close enough, or should I spend another minute or so finding the exact quote you asked for?

cs89 on April 9, 2009 at 3:43 PM

The never ending tale of Bristol and Levi narrated by Erick Erickson and Tyra Banks
How could any serious person not say to all this drivel a resounding no thanks?
How these two pairs would be of any import to anyone I havent a clue
To an old woman locked alone in a room with nothing else to do?

God, when did man lose his reason?
Save us, my God, if you’re there

PercyB on April 9, 2009 at 3:44 PM

I Vow Upinak. But just because you asked. =)

How do you know that he’s lying and she’s not? It’s his word against Gov. Palin.

As to the topic, is Levi fair game for blog fodder? Certainly. Have at it.
