Glenn Beck screams at Obama: Why don’t you just set us on fire?
posted at 7:14 pm on April 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
Inside Cable News calls this an Olbermann moment. It isn’t, exactly — Olby takes his Special Comments way too seriously to indulge in the sort of shtick with gasoline that Beck tries here — but it’s close enough. We’re not even three months into Obama’s term and already he’s screaming on air. How’s he going to deal with another three-plus years? What’s especially weird is the instant transition from light-hearted sight gag to seething outrage. Either he’s acting or his mind is … highly nuanced. Watch Bill Schulz try to stay in character as the drama unfolds.
As for amnesty, former McCain ad man Mark McKinnon thinks it’s a master stroke by Obama to pursue it now since the GOP backlash will ensure even more Hispanic support for the Democrats during the midterms. Doesn’t that depend on whether the Democratic Congress kills it or not?

It already feels like 30 years with the Obamination not simply three months.

Jon Stewart is a comedian on a comedy channel who plays at being a pundit. Glenn Beck is a pundit on a news channel who plays at being a comedian. The two biggest differences I can see are their politics and their willingness to hide behind one role while playing the other.
Jim Treacher on April 9, 2009 at 8:52 PM
Dudes – Why are people complaining Allah is anti-Beck? If anything, he’s being generous.
Beck’s just a guy with a TV show. If I had a TV show, I’d pull crazy stunts that involved humiliating Bill Schulz every day. If you’re in on the gag, Beck’s just a “rodeo clown.” I can’t imagine anyone being seriously offended by him, nor can I imagine anyone taking him terribly seriously.
But that’s just me.

Isn’t St Olaf the oaf that loves Huckabee? Where is that little gnome at? Booted?
HornetSting on April 9, 2009 at 8:53 PM
Yeah, I think the problem was that the skit should have been written better to somehow redirect the visual of him as the crazy one who is pouring gas and setting the nation on fire. Too many think it’s he, and not Obama, who’s doing that metaphorically to begin with. Clearly should have been more cautious when playing with fire.
If there were no political correctness issues they could have rocketed the skit over the top by flying in Turkish Blackface Man to do the pouring on Glenn.

I think Mr. Beck may have been reacting to the “story” done by Mr. Sanchez at CNN, who blamed Fox News and conservative talk radio for the death of the policemen in Pittsburgh. If you are going to be accused of being inflammatory (pun intended) then why not run with it?

Wow you all are testy tonight! I vote that AP keep his job… and trolls well they are trolls and I’ve actually seen worse.
About Beck. This is how I feel. And when there are polls that come out and say everyone else thinks he is great, well it is just a comfort to know that at least one guy on TV gets how I feel.
I would personally yell at Obama if I could. And I wasn’t too much of a coward.

LOL, some people are persuadable, but actually that has been a concern of mine as well. Earlier today, there was somebody saying that the Republicans should try to tie the supplemental war funding to missile defense… that was precisely the kind of politicization of the war we always rightfully berated the Dems for. There are people on our side now talking about filibustering judicial appointments, etc.
Incidentally… didn’t Obama move all of that supplemental stuff into the budget so that he could pretend he was cutting the budget? Somethings shady about an $81B supplemental, but I’m not sure what.
If I was a bit more cynical I might think everybody on both sides was just being political all along! :-)
DaveS on April 9, 2009 at 9:11 PM

First of all you on the left have never had the talent in your over the top demagogues that we have in ours, thank you very much!
Fascism is fascism… taking over business, passing laws punishing individual Americans, promising to redistribute wealth… you want us to call that freedom increased? Not hardly.
And if only we could get our Congressmen to actually sabatage Obama’s deplorable agenda to ruin the country! Don’t think you have much to worry about there.
And Parroting your sides sacastic claims of patriotism is only fitting. Your disengeniousness is only more obvious now that you are no longer protesting–everything is great now that Dear Leader Obama is killing innocent children and whatever else you accused Bush of… you are ridiculous.
The left is only about power. Hypocritical control of everyonelse’s lives. That’s all your side wants. And you can’t have it!
petunia on April 9, 2009 at 9:25 PM
I couldn’t agree more. I took a political philosophy class a few years ago which featured Strauss. It was incredible how much some of the die-hard liberals in the class demonized him. Kind of sad.
Only my opinion but if the GOP is to become a strong party again it will be because of people such as AP, Rick Moran, and Patterico — all good writers who aren’t afraid to be objective even if it means a criticism of the right at times. I don’t think the right wants power at this point. I think the right wants the left not to have power, and to let the rest of the citizenry (individuals) take power in equal measure to their own responsibility for their own actions. Which is why you’re starting to see slogans such as “no representation without taxation,” and variations on the theme.

nelsonknows on April 9, 2009 at 10:53 PM
That’s pretty much where I am.
I don’t “worry what the left thinks”, but I do think that we are at a very big potential tipping point in American politics. We have two enormously different ideologies competing for peoples hearts and minds. Sure, we need the light-hearted funnymen, but we also need to be mindful of the totality of the image that we present. Beck is just over the top enough that he’s probably not going to win over many new minds.
We can’t just present showy, entertaining “political porn” that unifies the right wing and expect that to be good for our future. And after 8 years of this obnoxious “republicans are anti-science” bit that the left has done, we don’t Bobby Jindal singling out “something called volcano monitoring” for ridicule in a national speech. And on and on it goes…
You know what I mean, I’m sure.

Jim Treacher on April 9, 2009 at 11:03 PM
Beck is capable of great satire. He’s also capable of
great satirical flops. This was an example of the latter. Ted Williams
only batted 400 in his best season. Most of Beck’s satire
works best on radio rather than on television.
Mixing satire with commentary is a challenge. I think
what went wrong with this example is that it was a less
than stellar satirical idea, and at the end, Beck lost his
satirical direction and reverted to non-satirical
commentary.
I vehemently disagree with John Stewart’s philosophy (at
least what apparently passes for philosophy in his mind),
but I would concede he’s often a great satirist– my
problem is that I wish he had the acuity to perceive what
needs to be satirized about the part of the political
spectrum in which he resides. (Yes, he has occasionally
satirized some on the left and even Obama, but it’s always
a gentle satire and never has the viscious undertones of
his satire at anyone not on the left.)
As everyone knows, all satire is commentary but not vice-
versa. Few people are really good at satire. Especially
those to whom the ideas are very important. It’s hard not
to follow the sirene call to be straight. Most satirists,
unlike Ulysses’ crewmen, don’t have someone to put wax
into their ears.
Some satirists, such as Red Square, have the ability to
resist the sirene call far more than others.
So, what does all this mean? It’s one thing to make a
fool of oneself on a particular occasion by a satirical
flop– it’s quite another to make a fool of oneself by
indulging in self-delusion. The former is Beck; the
latter is Olberman, who is a perpetual, self-made fool.
Beck is simply a good hitter who’s struck out a few times
at bat.
The real problem lies in those of us who delude ourselves
into believing that our insight is so great that we,
unlike other mere mortals, are somehow able to discern a
single event (a home run or a strikeout) as one defining
an entire career.
We know a lot depends on whose ox is gored. Bush made
many embarrassing mistakes, but the media’s contempt for
him was so pervasive that they viewed every mistake he
made as proof of how right they are to judge him a moron.
In contrast, Obama has made just as many (if not more)
embarrassing mistakes, yet the worst the media will do is
satirize them gently in the same way Stewart occasionally
satirizes the left. That’s because their mindset is
already on his side. This is obvious to anyone who’s not
a leftist idealogue.

Ugh, and the Beck bashing returns… Just when I thought you were starting to wake up.
Beck is an entertainer and enjoys using goofy props and just being a goof in general. Schulz plays the character of douchey loser on Red Eye, which is why Beck chose him to make this funny.
But what he’s talking about is important and he’s correct in what he’s saying. How can this be compared to Olby in any way? It would seem that InsideCableNews is oblivious as to who Schulz is, so they’re attacking Beck as if the little act wasn’t all in good fun, and act as if Beck just did something insane… and for some reason you’re treating it the same way.

Vintage Glenn Beck. He’s not for the humor-impaired.
Which pretty much explains why earnest liberals don’t get him.
One thing he used to do on his radio show when he was frustrated about something was to make the sound-effect of duct tape being pulled off a roll. He would say he was duct-taping his head so it wouldn’t explode.
You should really pay attention to the part where he calls himself a rodeo clown. Oh, he always has a point, but his shtick is over-the-top gimmicks to make his point in an entertaining way.
He would make a lousy face-of-conservatism, since he’s more libertarian than conservative, and always doing something that looks or sounds goofy. But I’m quite sure he doesn’t want to be the face of conservatives.
Relax. Let him be himself. Laugh when you think it’s funny. Complain when he crosses a line, because he probably will sooner or later. Just don’t expect him to be sober or diplomatic. Because you’ve got the wrong guy.
