White House: Bow? What bow?
posted at 4:40 pm on April 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I really wasn’t going to write about this again, mostly because I was convinced that the national media had let Barack Obama off the hook completely for his tradition- and protocol-breaking bow to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. However, Ben Smith reports that the White House has now been asked about it, thanks to a Washington Times editorial scolding Obama for the move — and that they’re denying it ever happened:
The White House is denying that the president bowed to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia at a G-20 meeting in London, a scene that drew criticism on the right and praise from some Arab outlets.
“It wasn’t a bow. He grasped his hand with two hands, and he’s taller than King Abdullah,” said an Obama aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The Washington Times called it the alleged bow a “shocking display of fealty to a foreign potentate,” and said it violated centuries of American tradition of not deferring to royalty. The Weekly Standard, meanwhile, noted, that American protocol apparently rules out bowing, or at least it reportedly did on the occasion of a Clinton “near bow” to the Emperor of Japan.
Interestingly, a columnist in the Saudi-backed Arabic paper Asharq Alawsat also took the gesture as a bow, and appreciated the move.
No bow? You tell me. Obama’s a lot taller than Queen Elizabeth, too, so compare the two greetings for yourself:
Originally, the excuse that had gotten floated around the media was that Obama was picking something off the floor. This video pretty much destroys that excuse:
Note also that this shows clearly that Obama did not “grasp [Abdullah's] hand with both hands”; Obama’s left hand is in plain view, on his left leg, as he executes the deep-waisted bow.
Will the media finally report this, as Ben Smith did, now that the White House is trying to deny the obvious and rewrite history? Or will they continue to sit silently while Obama tinkles on their heads and calls it rain? (also thanks to HA reader Geoff A)

It wasn’t a bow, his knees momentarily buckled under the weight of his awesomeness.
I believe that protocol allows for hand holding, but only if the other guy is wearing a dress.

I’ve been around for 12 Presidents now and the ONLY one who was ever pressed for an admission of “mistakes” by the media was GWB. It’s not the President’s job to admit his administrations mistakes. It would give the liberal media and the democRAT party propaganda material for the next election cycle. I don’t want Obumble to admit his mistakes. They are so blatant, only a Kool Aid drinker would not see.

Didn’t they teach him that move in the Indonesian muslim school he attended as a child?

Regarding the “Bush did it too” lie:
In 2008, President GW Bush bowed his to receive an honor from the King Abdullah, the placing of a medal around his neck. This is not a sign of fealty or submission from Bush to Abdullah, but a sign of honor from Abdullah to Bush.
Regarding the “Obama didn’t bow” lie:
President Obama bowed with bended knee before King Abdullah, as this picture more clearly shows than the video. No other head of state at the G-20 bowed in such a manner to any other head of state. Only President Obama bowed down before Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.”
Significance: To the best of my knowledge, no other president of the United States has ever before bowed down a foreign monarch. The MSM never reported this, covering up this unprecedented act. The White House staff are now denying this was a bow, which anyone with eyes can see is a lie.
I am still waiting for the MSM to report and analyze the historic significance of President Obama’s disgraceful act of submission.
Loxodonta on April 8, 2009 at 5:33 PM
Pathetic. It would have made more sense to simply not address it. To outright lie is just stupid. He doesn’t grasp the kings hand with his left hand until he is standing erect so why bother to bend over at all.

I think he didn’t have any idea what to do so he bowed. These gaffes, like everyone has been saying, wouldn’t have happened if he’d had a protocol department that he evidently can’t find enough time to staff. He’s too busy trying to be a superstar to pay attention to details. It’s part of the narcissist’s character. Details? Who needs details, I’m the POTUS. I WON. Sarkozy is a really short guy. Obama’s head is chin level of both the king and Sarkozy. Not even close to merely stooping to greet the king.
When I was a teen I ran a pretty good “you didn’t see what your eyes told you” defense when I was caught red-handed. It’s dependent on straight-faced delivery and must be repeated until the person to whom you’re lying gives up. If they’re motivated to believe you, they convince themselves that they were mistaken.
obladioblada on April 8, 2009 at 5:43 PM
So even if you’re taller than someone else, do you normally bow below them to get closer to their height?
I bend over to talk to my little kids but I don’t get down on the floor and stare up at them.
The excuse is damn near as bad as the act itself, pitiful all the way around.
Bishop on April 8, 2009 at 5:44 PM
Clearly, in one he was bowing and in the other he was scraping. Although he’s left America’s dignity in tatters on the floor, clearly the video shows he wasn’t trying to retrieve it.
The Libs see nothing wrong with any of this. At best they see it as a form of reverse condescension. At worst, it’s an overdue prostration for the sins of the past. The predictability of Liberals is amazing.
How’s he going to greet Ahmadinejad? At what point does he take the knee pads out? Let’s ask Lewinsky.

Yet, even if he HAD staffed a protocol department, does anyone believe he would actually consult with them? I don’t. Does he ever get briefed on situations before he goes out and speaks about them? He’s going to get us into some major trouble if he doesn’t put his ego in check and start listening to experts about world situations. Especially hot spots like Pakistand and Afghanistan.

– Region 1 DVDs to the UK PM.
– iPod to one of the richest people in the world
– Bowing to the Saudi king
Its not of any real import because these are just minor issues compared to the damage he (and Pelosi, Reed, Frank and Dodd) is doing. However, if you compare his rhetoric during his campaign to his actions, he’s coming off as a clown. He promised to re-establish the US’s reputation with the world (as a paper tiger?). All he has done is show his inexperience, lack of a spine, and how utterly unprepared he is for the power of the office he holds.

The fact that the WH is clearly telling a whopper (poor attempt at “king” humor) I think clearly demonstrates that the bow was wrong, wrong, wrong. Nonetheless, they will both continue to deny he did it, and simultaneously say it’s appropriate protocol, so the kool-aid drinkers can pick their excuse.
“I didn’t hit my wife, and besides the b!+ch deserved it!”
Once the denial appears headed for disaster, they’ll switch to “He wasn’t really bowing, he was just bending over to lick the King’s boots”.

That wasn’t a bow. Bush merely moved so Abdullah could put the ribbon around his neck. A bow would have preceded or followed that ceremony. Not occurred during it. The picture clearly bears it out.
And anyway, what does it really matter what Bush did? Does Bush define all behavior of Obama? So when Obama grovels before that grandson of a desert bandit, it is OK because of a supposed error of Bush’s?
Haven’t any of these scumbags on the left enough pride to be angry when they see our President serviley bowing before a Muslim absolute monarch?

At one time, like nearly all Americans, liberals were also overtly patriotic, and had a sense of honor and pride in our country’s symbols, values and history.
For example, look at this video of the 1936 Olympics opening ceremonies, narrated by Jesse Owens, in which he explains why all countries’ flags were dipped in honor of Hitler, all but one, the American Flag. I don’t know why so many seem to have lost this shared sense of spirit. Apparently, not even the the major news media share a sense of patriotism anymore.

(Here is what I posted to one of my other friend’s bulletin on this very subject) Apparently, according to Bill O. on his show last evening, the White Mosque is denying that Mein Fuhrer bowed to the king, instead kneeling down to shake the hand of someone smaller than he. However, this vid speaks differently. The bent knee. The head in a submissive pose. In addition to that, in the same segment, Bill O. showed another clip of Mein Fuhrer shaking the king’s hand. This time, the two were standing side by side. There was no bending over as the White Mosque stated was the case for the vid you have posted. Simple handshake. SUBMISSION. SUBMISSION. SUBMISSION BY A MUSLIM TO A MUSLIM LEADER.
