Somali pirates seize American ship, crew; Update: Crew overpowered pirates

posted at 9:28 am on April 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The issue of piracy in the Gulf of Aden hit home for Americans today.  A US-flagged ship and 21 Americans on board got taken by Somalia-based pirates.  The US Navy confirmed the attack this morning (via Mitch Berg):

The Kenya-based diplomat identified the vessel as the 17,000-ton Maersk Alabama and said all the crew members are American. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The U.S. Navy confirmed that a U.S. flagged ship with 21 members of crew was hijacked early Wednesday off the eastern coast of Somalia.

Spokesman Lt. Nathan Christensen said the attacked happened in the early hours of the morning hours, about 280 miles (450 kilometers) northeast of Eyl, a town in the northern Puntland region of Somalia.

Mitch scornfully refers to this as a “new chance for dialogue”.  What would Janet Napolitano call it?  A stowaway problem?  On-demand course correction?

The Somali pirates have operated in this region for a few years.  Thus far, the world has seemed disinclined to put pressure on the pirates of Aden Gulf, despite the headlines they have grabbed lately.  The US Navy now has an entree into the fight, and it will be interesting to see how the Obama administration reacts.  The US has downlook satellites and a treasure trove of assets with which they can track down the Maersk Alabama and its crew.

Will Obama use that to send the pirates a message about attacking American shipping?  Or will this be a “new chance for dialogue”?

Update: Score one for American merchant marines!  The Maersk Alabama is back under the crew’s control, as the Boss notes in her updates:

American crewmen have regained control of a hijacked U.S.-flagged cargo ship off the coast of Africa, according to CBS News. …

Late Wednesday morning, military sources told CBS News that the crew has regained control of the vessel by overpowering the pirates, taking one pirate into custody and throwing three overboard.

Hopefully they dropped some chum into the water to signal the sharks.  Kick ass, Maersk Alabama!

You know, time was that I would say this would be an utterly rediculous prediction, no way would it ever happen, or if some UN or World Court idiot tried, they would quickly be told where to put their indictments in no uncertain terms.

The saddest part, is that if it DOES happen here, I can only shake my head, not in surprise, but disbelief that we have sunk so low so fast.

JamesLee on April 8, 2009 at 5:13 PM

I guess the crew of this ship didn’t have much confidence in the government to take care of them, and decided to deal with the situation the right way. Maybe some of that will begin to rub off on the rest of us.

With the caveat that they only hate Historical America. America as a neutered, worthless UN slave is just peachy for them. America as a place where Christians are fed to the lions? Sure, they’d love that! An America where you are responsible for your own actions? No, Libs hate the very idea.

There are also legal questions about where and how to prosecute pirates, and about how far the U.S. military can or should go to help or protect commercial ships.–By ANNE GEARAN and PAULINE JELINEK, Associated Press Writers

LEGAL questions?!

scalleywag on April 8, 2009 at 5:22 PM

According to MSNBC: (linked here)

“U.S. sources told NBC News that when the 20-man crew overpowered one armed pirate, the three other pirates on board grabbed the captain as hostage and fled the ship in a lifeboat.”

“After negotiating with the pirates, the civilian crew released the one pirate they had, expecting the pirates to release the captain, the sources added, but that did not happen.”

While I’m proud of the crew’s bravery in the face of these armed thugs it just goes to prove you can’t trust terrorists or pirates at their word. I pray the captain is rescued unharmed.

Vice Adm. Bill Gortney, commander of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, told the House Armed Services Committee that the Pentagon is looking at the issue of ordering strikes inside Somalia and said that, “ultimately, the solution to the problem of piracy is ashore — in Somalia.”

Just wait a year, Captain. Mighty Mouse Obama is watching intently, decyphering intelligence from on high. No need for our military to intervene. Obama is at the helm of the world. Hell, Obama’s over there NOW.

Meanwhile, the Somali pirates have over 400 hostages from other countries who are also being told to wait patiently. No telling the horrible conditions and slavery they are suffering.

Navy officials have urged patience, saying the key will be to watch for progress over the next year to see if the increased patrols and agreements for piracy prosecutions begin to work.

We criticize any president we believe is behaving in ways that harm the country, whether it is Bush’s shamnesty or TARP, or Obama’s tyrannical socialism. It is completely perplexing that the Left cannot make such distinctions.

GIRD YOUR LOINS …

Those pirates have been there for years and never once attacked a US flagged ship while George Bush was President.

Took ‘em less than 100 days to get up the nerve to hit one though after Obama took office.

Good to see the crew defended themselves – this is something that Americans need to get used to while Obama occupies the White House. Expect the enemy to come hard and fast. Learn Karate – Obama’s only defense tactic is to offer bedtime chocolates to potential enemies.

This is the first REAL evidence that Americans are now LESS SAFE.

I understand they took a Brit flag’d ship a couple of days ago as well…. something else they had not done before.

I’m really troubled by how long its taking for the US Navy to get there… as we were supposed to already have ships on station for the anti piracy group.

Trust me, I know how big a chunk of water it is out there… but I want to know when the orders finaly went out to move….

Its now been about 18 hours since this started… at 30 knots thats 540 nautical miles… and news is still saying hours away… and this took place within 300 miles of a port in Somalia?…

As I posted a couple of hours ago, the ships are there, with a contingency of “special forces” on one, a counter terrorism or is it “overseas contingency force”.
They are under visual by a number of different devices. They have the ability to “cut” the engines at any time.

No matter how long a “ship” takes, a jet and satellites take a lot less time to get to the location.

right2bright on April 8, 2009 at 7:26 PM

One question for the much more “in the know” people here than I;

This story has got my attention as much as the wing nut who flew the plane into the US from Canada.
Isn’t it rather striking that in one week (hell, 2 days) we have had an obvious attack and then maybe a not so obvious odd situation?

ORconservative on April 8, 2009 at 7:30 PM

As long as they keep that lifeboat isolated, the negotiations can’t last that long.
I would say our captain can physically outlast these pirates..it will be a matter of attrition.
When on land they can take 56 days…they can’t take that long in a lifeboat.
Pray for a storm, and the “negotiations” will be over quick.

And I notice no source…

You can’t take a Pirate vessel without a ship there… you CAN destroy it, but that does not work in a hostage situation, and under Maritime law opens you up to all kinds of Legal problems…

Unless you “friend in the know” has a direct line to a Command Center? kinda like… oh the one I did work for for Third Fleet? Or CINCPAC? or even SUBPAC? who even though not having Command over this area would have the informatin from theatre…. and if he does have that direct line, then he knows quite well he SHOULD NOT BE TALKING ABOUT IT!

LOL… yeah… yer gonna disable a LIFEBOAT???? With a HOSTAGE ON BOARD? From a SUBMARINE???

Sorry, but you said, twice, there were ships on station… Press reports from US Navy spokesmen say otherwise…

This is literaly what I did during the run up, through, and After Desert Storm… trained and ran teams to board, and search, ships.

Destroyer or Cruiser gets on station, this is over…. as its NOT over… they must not be on station. Problem is that they should have been… ( and I know for a fact that two of my X shipmates deployments to that area of the world have been pushed back…).

Heck…. don’t even need the Seals for this… Ships team would be sufficient for this.

Fox, RIGHT NOW, continued with the report that ships, including the Bainbridge, are on the WAY.

So, the question is…. 18 hours into this… why is the Navy not there?

Or, are they waiting over the horizon for dawn, which IS a possibility… (possible, as night ops like this REALLY suck…).

Us Yanks prefer rule .308, but I get it and more than appreciate your point. I’ve heard .308 holes make invisible souls.

By the way, are you a Bren, or an Enfield man?

Either way, we have each others back…

M-14 2go on April 8, 2009 at 9:49 PM

If the Captain of the ship is in a life-raft, with a few Pirates, then the on-coming Destroyers with a few Marine Snipers on board, should cure the problem immediately. No negotiations, just drop them, message sent.

M-14 2go on April 8, 2009 at 9:35 PM

Unless, of course, you’re the Captain sitting in that life raft. I think I’d prefer a calmer approach to resolving my predicament. Then shoot them.

BobMbx on April 8, 2009 at 9:54 PM

If this is an American ship, how come they don’t have machine guns and grenades to fight pirates?

Blake on April 8, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Its a merchant ship, not a warship. There’s this thing called liability, and the Maersk Company most likely is unwilling to accept the liability of a kooky sailor letting loose with a weapon on another ship, or the other crew members.

It’s a good choice, overall. But, if I knew I was sailing through that area, yeah…I’m packing the old 12 gauge deck sweeper.

Navy vets will know the value of the shotgun below decks. Just stick it around the corner and pull the trigger. Works like a champ. With a rifle, you gotta aim it.

Good for home protection too my Model 12 Win. with 21 inch barrell and copper plated 2′s, holds nine, fires as fast as I can pump it and won’t shoot through walls and kill the kids or the neighbors but will make a damn mess of anything in the hall or the room.

No need to check for a pulse.

USS Bainbridge on scene now – the whupass has arrived

PJ Emeritus on April 8, 2009 at 10:10 PM

Checking back in….any new word? U.N. or ACLU preparing charges against the crew from throwing the innocent-until-proven-guilty overboard? Have a crack team of Blue Helmets been dispatched to haul the Americans to the World Court?
We can’t allow self defense to go unpunished.

Limerick on April 8, 2009 at 10:11 PM

How did they get thrown overboard and end up in a life boat should have been fish food.

dhunter on April 8, 2009 at 10:16 PM

Imagine being “badass” Somali pirate in your lifeboat, holding an American merchant captain hostage and this pulls up alongside,

PJ Emeritus on April 8, 2009 at 10:16 PM

The crew managed to catch one pirate offguard and overpower him – he was the one with the gun.

PJ Emeritus on April 8, 2009 at 10:17 PM

How about two seals rat a tat tat. Two to the head four times. Four shots each, all less than two seconds 4 dead Somalis, one astonished captian and the Destroyer just bobbin in the ocean half mile away.

dhunter on April 8, 2009 at 10:26 PM

As soon as the Navy arrived, this was over. I guarantee no military man is gonna allow a civilian – much less an American civilian – be handled in this way. No matter what the administration says.

Gotta admit…. love yer name…

Fought to keep the 14 and 45s for boarding ops…

They wanted to change us out for 16s, but we kept the weps we wanted for awhile by demonstrating how the 14 would punch though most merchent ship interior bulkheads… while the 16 would bounce all over creation…

so we ran pairs of shotguns… and 14s….

Wish I could agree with ya… but never underestimate the blatant stupidity of National Command Authority.

Romeo13 on April 8, 2009 at 10:48 PM

Obama is still hiding under his desk…considering appointing a committee to look into this or conducting a town meeting on piracy ….so that he doesn’t have to actually make a decision or come up with a real plan….

Meanwhile the pirates laugh.

This unfortunate incident illustrates the ever increasing need for more funding for education.

BobMbx on April 8, 2009 at 10:01 PM

My favorite is to shoot a 12 at the deck about 2/3s of the way between you and your target…

Ships have tile on their decks ususaly…. up to 3 to 4 layers… OO buck hits and its like a handgrenade going off… shards everwhere…

Romeo13 on April 8, 2009 at 10:55 PM

My new tea party slogan:

DEFEAT the PIRATES, both FOREIGN and DOMESTIC.

nemo239 on April 8, 2009 at 11:31 PM

Obviously our Navy is the problem and we need to get to Global Zero for Naval Warships. Until we disarm we are going to have to live with piracy from thug nations.

James on April 8, 2009 at 11:37 PM

I forgot to add the little //Obama modifier to my statement above.

James on April 8, 2009 at 11:37 PM

Unlike some on the right, I have never hoped for America’s failure.
orange on April 8, 2009 at 4:44 PM

Obama is not America. If his policies are crap then of course I want him to fail. Your inability to make that distinction is what makes you on the left such disingenuous arrogant narcissistic cowards.

jdkchem on April 9, 2009 at 12:13 AM

When it comes to a story like this, we’re not all that different from you guys.
orange on April 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM

There is a great movie line that is perfect for this occasion.

Don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s raining

Shovel all the crap you want but do not expect me to buy it. If this is your feeble attempt at reconciliation, you clowns blew that opportunity long ago. The fact is had Marines boarded the US merchant vessel and tossed the pirates overboard you turds would be screaming “war crimes” at the top of your lungs. Your fake patriotism is thoroughly unconvincing.

jdkchem on April 9, 2009 at 12:27 AM

Man overboard!

In honor of honor, I once again offer a favorite tale of 24 year old Stephen Decatur and the Barbary Pirates

Alabama’s crew presently zeroing sights on captured AKs. Expect situation to be resolved soon.

darktood on April 9, 2009 at 5:00 AM

Here’s a link to the blog that has been following the pirate situation for quite a while. Lots of data. Plus a handy chart for those confused about time-distance issues and the size of an ocean realitive to the number of ships available.

And thanks for the permission. I don’t know what I would do without your blessing to “carry on”.

BobMbx on April 8, 2009 at 10:01 PM

Spare me your irrationality. Not everyone with a gun is a kooky sociopathetic murderer. The murderers are the pirates who have killed over 200 people. It’s ridiculous for ships not to have armed protection.

Blake on April 9, 2009 at 9:23 AM

did you?

That’s Obama’s kinfolk that pirated that ship, his government solution for any of the white folk on that ship is unconditional surrender.
