Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on April 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
“Compared to Turkey and how old this civilization is, America is still very new.”
Well, compared to the civilization, perhaps — but not compared to Turkey. The nation of Turkey was created in the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, which had ruled southwest Asia and the present territory of Turkey for more than 600 years. Turkey was founded in 1923 in the chaotic flux of the Middle Eastern settlements after the end of World War I, as the Ottoman Empire’s lands got carved into the nation-states that exist today in the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding territories.
Compared to the US, Turkey and the rest of the nations in that region are actually quite young, not the opposite. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why Turkey rejects any responsibility for the Armenian genocide of 1915; besides denying that it took place at all, Turkey actually didn’t exist as a nation at that time. One might think that President Obama would take a moment to understand all of these issues before getting involved in them — and might also confirm the actual dates when nations got created before making those assumptions.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.
Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

History of any kind, unless it involves an American frick up, is of no concern or consequence to The One or the press.
All of history is a moot point unless it involved the U.S. doing something that may have had a negative impact on any civilization.

The Ottaman Empire may date back 600 years, but there were people living in the present United States 600 years ago, as well. If on is to credit Turkey with all of the experience and maturity of a 600-year-old civilization, then the United States should be credited with the experience and maturity of the Native American civilizations that were absorbed into our nation.

Why are we getting so upset about minor little things? Probably the vast right wing conspiracy is just making this stuff up anyway – don’t we all see how much he is adored by the whole world? Now that WE finally had the wisdom to elect such a brilliant orator???? – you can obviously see that I am sarcastic! That’s just about all we have left now, folks!
As a former German, and known for that fact in my small town here, I am often asked if I feel shame for what the Nazi regime did in Germany BEFORE I WAS EVER BORN!!!!! That is mighty big of some folks! My parents were teenagers during the war – talk about what their teenage years looked like and then think teens have it rough here! My dad was taken out of school at 16 – in 1938 (yes, that is the year the WAR started for Germany) and stuck in a uniform. He did not come home (thank God, he did!!!) until 1949! So his whole youth was WAR! My mom was sent out of town (Frankfurt, which has heavily bombed because of the airport, rail and roads there) and still had to hide in forests and bunkers during attacks! They NEVER talked about it when we were growing up, but gave us a feeling of having to stand up and talk about things as they happen, not AFTERWARDS! Now I see history being re-written over and over and over!
We need to take our country back as long as we still have a country!!!!! But I also know we cannot start in Washington, we have to start at HOME! Our town had a Tea Party last Saturday! VERY GOOD EVENT!!! I encourage EVERYONE to join these – peaceful protests, not about any specific taxes, but just in general to say “Enough is Enough!” Then we have to vote the bums we have locally OUT and start there…. People, get involved in your community, stay in close touch with your elected officials! I do! It does take a lot of time, but as long as it just takes me time, isn’t this country worth it????????

What is often forgotten is that, as far as cohesive continuous governments is concerned, the United States is actually one of the oldest continuous governments going. France has had the Bourbons, the 1st Republic, the 1st Empire, the Bourbon Restoration, the Orleanist Monarchy, the 2nd Republic, the 2nd Empire, the 3rd Republic, the Vichy puppet regime, the 4th Republic and the 5th Republic since 1776. Germany did not become a unified state until 1871 and since then has undergone several government changes. Italy–1861 and also several government changes. Switzerland took its present form in 1848. The Ottoman Empire began in 1289 or so, but the Republic of Turkey came into being in 1923. China underwent a change from the Qing Dynasty to a republic to a communist regime. Japan–from the Tokugawas to the Meiji Restoration to its present post-occupation government. One of the few states that can claim to possess continuous government older than the United States is Great Britain–assuming the Glorious Revolution of 1683 as the start point.
So, ironically, while culturally younger than many other lands, as far as continuous governments is concerned, the United States is one of the oldest.

What Obama and his ilk have succeeded in doing over the years [thank you, NEA] is to show us lowly pedestrian Americans that learning the details of history, and such, is not the stuff of the Ivy League. They are interested in “ideas.”
Often hairbrained ideas at that.
But the facts…they are meaningless to Obama and the Obamatrons.
The Turkey of Attaturk is under seige…and Obama calls to mind the Ottomans? The 600 years of Ottoman Islamist control over Turkey was not all the wonderful for the average Turk on the street. Attaturk knew this. He and the young lions tried to make sure that such would never happen in Turkey ever again. For this, Attaturk is and has been revered…but not for long, it seems.
Turkey is the one of the few successful sectarian Islamic nations having to deal directly with Islam and its fundamentalism. The past 80-plus years of modern Turkey are about to go down the tube…thanks to too many in the West seeing nothing wrong about Islamism…after all, according to the Obamatrons [and the NEA] who are we to judge any other nation?
The dream of Attaturk is about to be pushed aside, so we can allow Islamism to spread over the globe.

Good point about France. The French Revolution started in 1789, when George Washington was already President, then there was the Napoleonic Empire, and the current form of government in France is called the Fifth Republic, founded in 1958 by Charles de Gaulle. I have in-laws in France, and I keep reminding them that the United States still has its First Republic (well, maybe the second after Obama).
As for Obama, he’s not qualified to talk Turkey, because he is one.

Why is it that Obama critics capitulate in conclusion? PC is a platform on quicksand.
“I believe” is an article of faith. Why apologize FOR the President who does NOT care about me or you or our nation? Obama proves no allegiance to America. It is foolish to place faith in someone so prone to deconstruct our only salvation, our Constitution, remaking our government by negating our Constitutional Government.
By studying what Obama is doing and noting his negative impact, one observes what Obama wants to do by listening and following through with what is heard by his audiences and marking the effect of Obama’s change.
Evidently, by observing public examples, the price of an Ivy League education is a bankrupt mind, blinded to equate with ignorance. Irony.
What Obama is doing is wrong, and his motivations are not founded upon our Constitution or our American heritage that has CONSISTENTLY sacrificed for the likes of everyone, including Mr. Obama. Those with eyes to see, pay attention and quit apologizing for recognizing Obama’s adverse affect as he depletes our Constitutional Rights, our Constitutional Government, the sanctity of our homes, and our global security.

Agreed, but this is the tactic of the left, assume the opposition is stupid and they will believe anything you tell em. The best way to accomplish this is by the current education system where you intentionally “dumb down” the population.
Unfortunately, President Obama is a product of that system from K-12 (Punahoe is an expensive private school and because the tuition is so high there is an assumption that the eduction received is equally high – not true). His expensive Ivy League eduction was a breeze for those behind the scenes who where grooming him.
Therefore, do not believe everything you hear from President Obama or his teleprompter which keeps him on message and sounding smart.

As far as governments go, the US is pretty old. There are not that many countries that have older governments (though it depends on how you define it). Britain can be said to have an older government, though it has evolved significantly in that time, and there are a few other monarchies here or there that are still around.
However, as a Nation (which is a self described people) and as a territory, the US can be said to be relatively young.

America’s “civilization” dates back to ancient Greece and the Biblical patriarchs.
See, the problem with educated ignoramuses like sesqui (we’re supposed to be impressed with his multisyllabic screenname) is that they went to impressive colleges and indeed have some brainpower. Unfortunately for them and for us their brains have been filled with years and years of Gramscian indoctrination that presents a “nuanced” view of history that minimizes the contributions of what was formally known as western civilization.
Sesqui and his hero Obama are smart but ignorant. They are so confident of their superiority that they can’t be bothered to check actual facts before the open their mouths.
It doesn’t matter if you can trace American polity to the Magna Carta, the Roman senate, Plato’s Republic or, Abraham, Isaac & Jacob, as long as the Turks have more melanin in their skin and look browner or yellower than Americans with pale skin, folks like sesqui will find a way to think of them as superior to their own culture.
Folks like sesqui cheered when Brazilian president Lula blamed the world’s economic mess on people with blue eyes and white skin at the same time they ignored the fact that in a country that is about 50% of African descent none of Lula’s cabinet ministers are black.

I’m a leftie, and I do not despise American culture. And pointing out the basic fact that the civilization and culture in Turkey is much older than the civilization and culture in the US is not such a horrible thing. It’s just the truth. It’s not even a truth that puts the US in a bad light.
If you think Obama hates America so much, why would he say (from the same link in the original post):
