Newt gives Obama an F on the Grand Tour

posted at 2:14 pm on April 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The Barack Obama administration wants to paint the tour of Europe as a rousing public-relations success, but as Newt Gingrich points out, that’s not the reason Presidents travel. Greta van Susteren refers to the trip as Obama’s “semester abroad,” getting a chuckle from Newt, but Gingrich says this could have value as a learning experience. Greg Hengler has the video at Townhall:

Newt’s not alone in this analysis. Jackson Diehl wrote much the same thing for the Washington Post in the middle of the trip. Diehl objected to Obama’s abandonment of the American agenda from the start, and wondered when Obama was going to act on behalf of the US rather than simply acquiesce to everyone else.

Gingrich makes a good point here. Two previous presidents had similarly rocky starts. John Kennedy realized how badly he’d bungled and improved later. Jimmy Carter remained convinced of his own brilliance and continued to bungle foreign policy; in fact, Carter has never changed an iota in almost 30 years since Ronald Reagan replaced him. These experiences can be object lessons for a president, assuming they don’t believe their own press and acknowledge their failings.

Which one describes Obama? I know he’d prefer to think of himself as a new JFK, but somehow, I don’t see him acknowledging failures. I’m betting Carter, especially since they have remarkably similar outlooks on foreign policy. JFK would never have appeared in France — a country thousands of Americans died to liberate — to apologize for American arrogance.

You know, Beck had a letter writing initiative to Gordon Brown after Obama fumbled the ball on his visit.
Maybe we Americans should send letters to Europe, stating that the bumbling ass and totus do not speak for us. We do not apologize. We expect praise for saving their bacon years ago and continuing to protect their yellow asses.

Ogabe will trudge on, convinced at all times that he is right and it’s only the failings others which stand in the way of his perfection.

Like I said on another thread, Bambi got “Versailled” on his World Tour. The Euros, Russians, Chinese, Saudis, and everyone else did to him the same thing Lloyd George and Clemenceau did to Wilson: they sweet talked him, flattered him, made all sorts of promises, and screwed him over. The big difference, Wilson didn’t bow to a Saudi king!

Why oh why did Bambi have to come back? I’d have taken up a collection so that he could stay in the workers’ paradise of his choice–along with Plugs, Dingy Harry, Crazy Nancy, and any trolls here…

Third world status isn’t that far away. Just a little more pressure on the financial system … and we could be right there! It’s a new day.

Lost what little respect I ever had for him when he did a TV spot with Nancy Pelosi on “Global Warming.” Nothing he has to say now or ever again can have any relevance. He has shown time and time again how little character he has. It time to put people like him out to pasture, or better yet in a museum. Wish people would stop giving him a pulpit to spew his nonsense from. He is part of the problem (RINOs reaching across the isle), not part of the solution.

Sometimes this administration is like watching a B movie where the audience sees the monster rising up and wants to scream to warn the character. Amen to that Ed. When I heard Obama make the comments he made, I had a chill thinking about all of the soldiers that fought to liberate France.

It’s sad, because once again, it seems that people don’t know their history (or remember those that died FOR their history).

Apparently, Obama doesn’t seem to remember history as well. I wonder if any of the WW II veterans had the same reaction.

In fact, due to our efforts – it allowed France back into N America, via the colonies – for their own “support”.

i.e. France would never have returned had the Revolution not been successful and considering France was a “super power” who lost first, then spring boarded off the “loose armies of the colonies” – it still resonates today: we do the winning, they do the losing.

A lot of people don’t remember (although Newt Gingrich should) that the JFK/Nixon debates focused primarily on who hated Communism more.

JFK may have been naive and ideolistic, but there is no reason at all to believe that he was unpatriotic.

Barak Hussien Obama spent his entire life being raised by, educated by and mentored by nothing but extremist anti-American radicals.

The Europeans, Russians, Chinese, and Saudis did a number on him. They did to him the same thing Clemenceau and Lloyd George did to Woodrow Wilson–flattered him, patted him on his head, tugged his big ears like you would a kid’s, and then proceeded to screw him over–you can still hear him squealing.

As for the European press and their reaction to him: When you get both the Telegraph and the Guardian saying you’re an incompetent boob–then guess what–you’re an incompetent boob! And let’s not get started on his other faux pas: The bow, Not going to the D-Day cemetery–although I have a feeling that the shades of all those fallen men are just as happy that he didn’t come as I’m sure they would not want his presence on such hallowed ground.

The “apology tour” was a sickening travesty–only a leftie could applaud it. I make no apologies for my country’s actions–I take pride in them. We did and we do what we have to. Again, my favorite bit from “Wind and the Lion”:

The American grizzly is a symbol of the American character: strength, intelligence, ferocity. Maybe a little blind and reckless at times… but courageous beyond all doubt. And one other trait that goes with all previous.

2nd Reporter: And that, Mr. President?

Theodore Roosevelt: Loneliness. The American grizzly lives out his life alone. Indomitable, unconquered – but always alone. He has no real allies, only enemies, but none of them as great as he.

2nd Reporter: And you feel this might be an American trait?

Theodore Roosevelt: Certainly. The world will never love us. They respect us – they might even grow to fear us. But they will never love us, for we have too much audacity! And, we’re a bit blind and reckless at times too.

I don’t care if the rest of the world loves us–so long as it respects us and even fears us a bit.

Amazing, this loser giving someone an F … after his failure in Congress. I hope this guy sticks around, the only one who wants him anywhere near power again are GOP suckers who have no one else besides the female version of a stupid George Bush to vote for.

Monkei on April 8, 2009 at 4:49 PM

Jimmy Carter remained convinced of his own brilliance and continued to bungle foreign policy; in fact, Carter has never changed an iota in almost 30 years since Ronald Reagan replaced him.

I disagree Ed-Carter has actually gotten worse in almost 30 years.

Who better to know!

Now that Urkel is back from his “semester abroad” (I love it) he’ll do absolutely nothing, but describe it as something. My former unit 1/221st in the 11th ACR is deploying to Afghanistan. I hope and pray for those guys with such a feckless CINC in charge of them.

These experiences can be object lessons for a president,

What I was waiting for newt to say was that the important lesson was the one that the other world leaders learned, that barry is an empty suit. He’s not a policy wonk, he’s not brilliant like they keep telling us. He’s an idiot and when he got behind closed doors with these guys, who’ve been playing games of hardball all their lives that would make chicago look like a kindergarten, and they see that there is nothing there, that’s the real lesson that was learned. medvedev went back to putin and said,”We own the world.”

capititulus:

Moron. The French helped the United States for one reason: they hated the British. And in fact we almost got in a war with France not long after the Revolution because the new US government did not let them run the country. Lafayette even ended up in a French prison for awhile. What you know about history is nothing. Absolutely nothing. A lot more Americans have died defending France than the other way around. A lot more.

I think his BDS tour half went well. The gimme gimme half, not so well.
History means nothing to this clown. The second coming of jimmah is going to bring us right back to 1979.

oakpack on April 8, 2009 at 5:42 PM

Well so Obama goes to Europe. And since so many Europeans do not like Americans they are all excited to have an American president who is almost as antiAmerican as they are.

Obama of course is a narcissist. So he believes that all he has to do is flutter his eyelashes and the Russians are going to drool all over themselves and hump his thigh. That might work for capitulus here, but not the Ruskies.

You can call this an echo chamber, but it is not nearly as closed minded as Kos and HuffPo and places like that. Why not just go away if you don’t like it here? No one will stop you.

What a laugh. I have to listen to lefties come on here and yammer about Hiroshima and you are talking about how the GOP blames Carter. I blame him. We are still paying for his incompetence and unearned self regard. If he had dealt with Iran then, we might not be dealing with it today.

Actually, Carter does deserve blame now-his incompetence as “President” almost 30 years ago is solely responsible for today’s Iran problem.

Modern liberals are incredibly ignorant of history because they are so focused on the “here and now”. Their view is that if it’s change it has to be good. They’re not interested in whether similar programs have been tried and either failed or succeeded in the past, nor are they interested in what happens over the middle or long term. It’s only what satisfies me now.

The final outrage from our jacka** president: “America is not a Christian nation.”

HOW DARE HE?

America was founded on Judeo/Christian teachings from Genesis to Apocalypse.

This small man who is our president has neither the right nor the privilege to proclaim our country to be as pagan as he is.

He refuses to acknowledge that he occupies the Office of the President – which supercedes any indivudual.

He travels to Turkey to publicly deny the Judeo/Christian truth of our founding and tradition; he has the gall to proclaim to the world that it is not so.

Emperor Obama brings a curse upon us by repudiating the God and Faith upon which our nation was founded, and to whom our Founders looked for all guidance and blessing.

tigerlily on April 8, 2009 at 7:50 PM

While in Turkey, Obama proclaimed that, “America was not a Christian nation.”

WHAT???? HOW DARE HE? DOES HE THINK HE CAN REWRITE OUR HISTORY; ERADICATE OUR DEEP ROOTS IN THE JUDEO/CHRISTIAN FAITHS?

WILL WE LET HIM CASUALLY AND IMPUDENTLY DENY THE FAITH OF OUR FOUNDERS, OUR FAITH AND THE MILLIONS WHO HAVE DIED DEFENDING OUR LAND AND LIBERTY?

WE NEED TO LET HIM KNOW THAT HE HAS NO RIGHT TO REPRESENT OUR COUNTRY AND HER CITIZENS IN SUCH A SHOCKING AND UNTRUTHFUL MANNER!

obama’s kind of talk goes beyond arrogance. He is a pagan who brings disgrace and a curse upon us all.

tigerlily on April 8, 2009 at 8:01 PM

Vercingetorix. Charlemagne. Joan of Arc. William the Conqueror. Charles the Hammer. Napoleon. Lafayette. The Citoyens fighting with pitchforks against muskets at Valmy. The Foreign Legion. Armies around the world including the U.S. emulated the French including uniforms and military terminology.

France. What the hell happened to you? Where are your collective balls?

Oh, that’s right…Marshal Petain said it all in 1940-The result of twenty years of Marxism.

But, we are becoming like them and due to the same causes.

Dr. ZhivBlago on April 8, 2009 at 8:04 PM

sorry for the double post. I thought I lost the first one and had to rewrite it. Turns out is snuck right past me onto HA. Anyway, gives me the chance to say, God bless America and Jesus is my Lord.

tigerlily on April 8, 2009 at 8:06 PM

Which one describes Obama?

Well, of course he’s all four Presidents on Rushmore with a dash of Superman and a JFK/RFK/MLK sauce with a FDR sprinkles and a Reagan cherry on top.

Greta was trying to tell Newt (paraphrasing) ‘These things you think he should learn about North Korea, Russia, etc. are not profound. Bush, Clinton, everyone knows these things. How can you say he needs to learn something?’

She doesn’t seem to notice: Obama clearly does not know these things that everyone else knows; and his whole policy (from ‘reset’ to slobbering over the mullahs and everything else) is all about deliberately un-knowing what this nation has known and stood for.
