Iranians charge Saberi with espionage
posted at 10:11 am on April 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Apparently, all that talk about friendship and Nowruz greetings hasn’t helped. Early last month, I wrote about the suspicious disappearance of American journalist Roxana Saberi in Iran after running afoul of the police for “illegal reporting”. Today, Fox and AP both report that the Iranians have charged Saberi with espionage for her efforts to write a book about the Iranian people:
The lawyer for an Iranian-American journalist detained in Iran says she has been charged with espionage.
The lawyer, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, says Roxana Saberi has been informed of the charges against her.
Saberi has apparently been held since late January on charges of purchasing alcohol, but the real crime is journalism without a license. Iran revoked Saberi’s permission to work as a journalist, but she chose to remain behind anyway to work on her book. Iranians often revoke permits for journalists while ignoring their work, but they obviously came to a different decision about Saberi — at the same time Barack Obama took the oath of office.
Joe Biden warned in October that nations would find ways to test a new, inexperienced President, and this looks like that kind of effort. The Iranians have gone out of their way to reject Obama’s overtures since he took office, including his call for greater dialogue. They have cemented their position on nuclear research, and have done their best to look as intransigent as possible. Thus far, they have not gotten Obama to push back against their rhetoric.
The trial of Roxana Saberi looks like another boundary test. Will Obama demand Saberi’s release publicly? Will Iran use it as a bargaining chip for further concessions? We will soon see how Obama responds to this test. In the meantime, keep Saberi and her family in your prayers.

I’ve been blogging about this as well. I’m anxious to see what BHO does here but I don’t expect it will be much. Kathleen Parker and Gail Collins seem to think that Obama’s “cool” and his smile will win the day but the Iranians don’t think that way.
And what of Robert Levinson who has been missing in Iran? What will Obama do about him?

I feel sorry for her, since she will be used as a pawn by Iran, Obama will have no clue what to do, and she could easily end up being executed.
Of course, not to be too harsh, this is what can easily happen when one hangs out in a country like Iran.

I think it was a bit naive of her to go to Iran in the first place, but it’s a shame that the administration is not doing everything in its power to help this woman. She is an American citizen, and it looks like we’re hanging her out to dry.
Slightly OT, but damn, she’s a beautiful woman.
Anna on April 8, 2009 at 10:29 AM
I think Iran will see this as an opportunity to humiliate the U.S. My suspicion is there will be a show trial, conviction and “conditions” for releasing her, under massive media coverage, to some neutral party to show the compassion of the Iranian government and the impotence and ineptitude of American leadership.

I pray for Roxana Saberi and her family during this time but quite honestly, expecting any help from Obama is absurd! He and his inexperienced minions (Hillary et al.) in a world diplomatic crisis approaches the depth of the forlorn… Americans are now being grabbed all over the world and being held hostage (in Mexico by drug runners, off Somalia by pirates, and now in Iran by Islamic fundamentals) and the inexperienced and moronic crew in the White House has no clue… 444 days of yet another hostage drama likely….

Well this proves it. The Iranian government just doesn’t get it. If they would just make those campaign contributions to democrats and pay some kickback to The Obama gang, billions and billions of dollars would flow into Iran.
Building projects, harbors, roads, schools for the children, shopping malls, schools. Did I mention schools? Of course it would all go to local construction companies, and the mad mullahs would all get their cut. Those Iranians really are a backwards people who just don’t understand how the modern world operates.

You really can’t make up this sort of cognitive dissonance. Our opponents are the stupidest version of smart I can imagine: “They like us so much they have to keep us around by force!”
It only took one hostage crisis to knock the Demcrats out for twelve years from 1981-1993. Now Obama has two, and counting.
Speaking of which I recently saw Bill Maher blaming Reagan for something which happened in 1980. They ALWAYS do that. Civics not a strong suit in the progressive movement.

Back when I was a young pup, out in the World, I learned how to say three phrases in the language of wherever I happened to be:
“Another beer please”
“Where is the bathroom?” and
“You look very beautiful tonight”…
These three phrases came in very useful, and I used them to great effect, all around the world.
However, it looks like President Obama’s three stock phrases are:
“It’s all our fault”
“Please, take my money” and
“Please stop hitting me”…

Omid Reza Mirsayafi an Iranian blogger who was in jail for insulting Iran’s leaders. He died in prison last month and the authorities claim he committed suicide which is most likely a lie. And another blogger was arrested few months ago, Hossein Derakhshan, for allegedly being an Israeli spy. He is still in jail and no one knows what his condition.
Yet the UN invites Ahmadinejad as a guest, Britain gives him the honor of a televised “Christmas Blessing” and that nincompoop Obama wants to start a dialogue with Iran. This is what I mean when I say: “he who mercy the cruel will end up being cruel to the merciful.” Every time the western world gives legitimacy to evil regimes, we are indirectly responsible for the deaths of innocents. Of course that is if you believe we are our brother’s keepers.

Someone may have already said this (sorry, short on time): she is an American born and raised with dual citisenship via her Iranian-born father. She went to Iran for university, her assignments as a reporter and to write a book about Iran. She is an accomplished professional who many of you may have heard reporting at some point or another.
If each person who wrote something here would make a phone call to let it be known what should be done, that could really be a start to something like letting the Iranian government know the common people want their fellow citisen back.
I’m right along with the rest of you, praying for her safe return. When her parents board the plane back to the US, may she be sitting in between them.
