Biden to Israel: Leave the mullahs alone!

New Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that he will handle the Iranian nuclear weapons program if the US doesn’t stop them.  Apparently, that’s one foreign test that VP Joe Biden simply won’t abide.  He waggled his finger at Israel and warned them not to interfere in, uh, their own national-security crisis:

Vice President Joe Biden issued a high-level admonishment to Israel’s new government Tuesday that it would be “ill advised” to launch a military strike against Iran.

Biden said in a CNN interview that he does not believe newly installed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would take such a step. Even so, his comment underscored a gap between the conservative new Israeli government and the Obama White House on a series of questions, including the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and Iran.

While the Obama administration has made a series of recent overtures to Tehran, the Israelis have grown more confrontational out of concern that the Islamic Republic’s increasing nuclear know-how could one day become an existential threat.

Netanyahu signaled several times during his election campaign that he would not tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran. “I promise that if I am elected, Iran will not acquire nuclear arms,” he said in one appearance, “and this implies everything necessary to carry this out.”

The Americans didn’t want Israel taking out Saddam Hussein’s Osirak reactor in 1981, either, but that turned out to be critical in ending Saddam’s pursuit of nuclear weapons.  It wound up being a low-cost hygienic move that made two invasions of Iraq possible, and kept Saddam from overrunning Saudi Arabia.  In that case, the Reagan administration did the finger wagging, and every successive administration benefited from it — until George W Bush deposed Saddam permanently in 2003.

The Israelis acted in 1981 because they rightly sensed that the US would not intervene to stop Osirak from going on line, which would have given Saddam nuclear fuel for the weapons he desired.  Israel sensed the same thing about the Bush administration, and if they thought Bush was hesitant, imagine what they think of the new internationalists in the West Wing.  Even more so than with Saddam, who dreamed of a pan-Arab state more than destroying Israel, Netanyahu and the Israelis know that Tehran will only have one destination in mind for their nuclear-tipped missiles: Tel Aviv.  They have no desire to get proven correct in a missile attack that will destroy their nation, which is the not-so-secret desire of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the mullahcracy for which he fronts.

If Biden wants to stop Israel from conducting the same kind of hygienic attack on Iran that they conducted on Iraq in 1981, then the US had better get a lot more serious about shutting down Iran’s nuclear program.  We can start by exposing the December 2007 NIE as a piece of political hackery and admit that Iran has never stopped working on the bomb.  Then we can stop sending “reset/overcharge” buttons to Russia and demand reciprocity on Iran as the price for backing away on missile-defense systems in eastern Europe.  Perhaps the latest arrival from the medical TV series House can arrange to get this administration a spine transplant, stat.

Andy Taylor was a sheriff too. I’d submit that Biden rates a rank no higher than Barney Fife–Deputy. So maybe we could go with Deputy Dog Biden or Deputy Bumbles Biden or Deputy Barney Biden.

Whatever the name, let’s make sure that the deputy is given only his one bullet.

I heard this story on the radio when I was in the car earlier. I had just left the house after learning about the Somali pirate stand off and the Iranians holding that female journalist hostage; the story began: President Obama is preparing for a showdown (and here I mentally added ‘with Iran’ instead, they said) with Israel. I couldn’t believe it. The Norks float a missle; Iran takes a hostage, and Somali pirates are giving us the finger…and he is preparing for a showdown with Israel over them defending themselves against annihilation. This is only 2 months in…and we’ve got 4 years of this foreign policy a**clownery to look forward to.

And Bibi strikes me as the kind of person who doesn’t make promises with expiration dates. Like TOTUS does.

Biden is a dolt. The adults putzes are in charge now.

Great. We have an anti-American “president” and a brainless idiot for a vice president.

We are in seriously deep feces, people.

I still say we won’t survive four years of this. God or good men must intervene.

Biden is the “Court Jester”…no one pays any attention to to him, especially people (not folks) who have a higher IQ than he, which I think would be about 90% of the world’s population.

Israel has to take this warning seriously. The simple fact is that they receive billions in aide from the US. And, the cooperation and support they receive from the US military is equally important. Without US support and supply their military capability will go down dramatically.

Of course it would almost turn into a game of chicken. If the President moved to cut aide and cooperation with Israel he’d have to face a strong domestic response. There continues to be strong support of Israel amongst both Jews and non-Jews in the US. And, is that a fight he’d want to take on?

Israel could call his bluf and attack Iran. But, if he was not bluffing and the US reacted strongly by withdrawing significant economic and military support to Israel they may have made their position far worse for the mid to long term.

The Israelis would have to decide whether the threat is an existential one or not. If an Iranian nuclear bomb is an existential one–and I would say that it is–then they might not have a choice but to strike and deal with the consequences. Before that happens though, if I’m Israel, I’m stockpiling and making friends–or at least sellers–wherever I can find them–Taiwan, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, even China if possible–just in case. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Biden and his liberals don’t even want Americans to be able to defend themselves, why would he want Israelis to?

“Demand reciprocity [from Russia] on Iran as the price for backing away on missile-defense systems in Eastern Europe?” One, the European missile defense sites are NOT bargaining chips. Two, we should demand reciprocity from Russia on Iran. Period. In return for nothing more than a non-nuclear Iran and a more stable Middle East.

to work and having 98% nations of the world hate you, Israel needs to have evidence that their existence was threatened to soften the enormous criticism that would come their way.

WashJeff on April 8, 2009 at 4:05 PM

There is no proof that is sufficient for the evil to make them decent. The only thing that Israel could do to get the Left and muslims on their side would be to walk themselves to a concentration camp in preparation for another final solution.

The situation is completely polarized at this point. Israel should not waste any time or lives in a futile search for positive “world opinion”.

The only logical reason I can think of why RR publicly lambasted the Israelis in 1981 over the Osirak raid was because of the geopolitical implications of another theater war with the Russians by proxy.

Even so, IIRC, RR didn’t protest too much, other than to go through the motions of the UNSC “harshly worded statement”. Not long afterwards, the matter was quietly dropped.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

There were many good things about Reagan, in particular his stance on foreign Communist aggression.

However, I think he had some RINO-ish tendencies…maybe his years of California/Hollywood exposure, perhaps to avoid outraging the Left and sparing political capital for facing down the Soviets. I don’t remember him treating Red China as a threat, nor North Korea. Again, perhaps, focus on Moscow.

True, he did order/authorize the strike against Qaddafi, but his non-response to the Beirut Marine Barracks bombing displayed his unwillingness to get involved with the Middle East as he saw it as a no-win quagmire…Qaddafi was on the periphery.

My best guess is that given his probable view of the Geopolitik at that time, Saddam was a valuable, conservative ally against the Iranians, and would also make the Soviets think twice about moving into Iraq especially if they had nuclear capabilities.

Biden is truly a lower form of life, maybe a toad, a lizard or some kind of serpent. All brain stem absolutely no higher functions.

dmann on April 8, 2009 at 8:22 PM

Neither China nor North Korea at that time were really viewed as serious threats. Reagan viewed China as a valuable counterweight against the Soviet Union and the Chinese capitalist engine was really just getting started. North Korea was viewed more as an irritant than anything else. He did see Saddam as a counter to Iran. Also, remember, he did have to deal with a Democratic controlled Congress for much of his time in office and a Democratic controlled House for the entire time led by one of the most capable Speakers the Democratic Party ever produced–Tip O’Neill. Unlike Crazy Nancy, Tip O’Neill was competent.

Dr. ZhivBlago on April 8, 2009 at 7:53 PM

IIRC, RR’s backdown on Beirut was due to a Dem Congress and State forcing his hand. Still, I consider the Beirut retreat to be the lowest point of RR’s presidency. Having deployed, we should have stayed regardless of an attack on the base. Period.

Matt Helm on April 8, 2009 at 8:41 PM

Agreed. Realpolitik makes for some strange choices at first glance, and the most important piece on the chessboard of the day was the one whose thousands of missiles threatened the United States (USSR).

Also agreed your comment on Tip. I think one of the funniest moments of RR’s presidency was when he showed up in Tip’s district, at an Irish pub, to have a mug of beer with the patrons. Tip fumed from DC as RR laughed and joked. Priceless.

Wonder how many Republicans would have the balls to pull off a stunt like that anymore? Cantor is trying, but he pissed away his Conservative street cred with the AIG bonus tax vote recently.

/sigh

Biden does not have any idea what he is talking about. The enemy does not care what Biden thinks or says especially when what he says favors them.

If Biden is going to lecture U.S. on anything it should be that he is telling you what to do because he thinks he can. Not because he has any facts or fully understands the issues nor has he ever been personally involved with the issue (experiencing the issue by living among and talking to the person on the street and simple observation is involvement that creates full understanding).
