Video: Psychotically angry military veterans and the academics who must tolerate them

A special treat from Penn State’s instructional series on how to cope with “Worrisome Student Behaviors.” It seems our heroine’s been saddled with one of those ill-educated military types and, try as she might to reason with him, his bestial rage keeps getting in the way. Whatever is she to do? Watch and learn, my friends, in case you too are confronted by one of these menacing ne’er-do-wells.
Incidentally, this comes from the PSU College Republicans’ YouTube page. Why not just watch it at the PSU link up top? Funny thing: There are four videos in the series but this one, uniquely among them, doesn’t play. It appears to have been disabled for some reason. I wonder why.

The acting is phenomenal. I haven’t seen such moving dialogue since David Mamet’s Glen Glengarry Ross.
The tension that builds crescendos into an explosion of humanity when Matthew confronts SJP about his C+ grade on the paper he was made to write over. Kudos.

I like the little youtube comment about what would have been the outrage if the guy had said, “The black kid,” or, “Oh, the gay guy.” Helps put it into a context of how a typical liberal would get all holier-than-thou almost immediately.

Speaking as a veteran, this video has me so outrageously & furiously full of furious outrage that I can barely control my urge to yawn.

This goes even beyond veteran vs. professor. He makes a mention of how she feels about the war. It seems to be a liberal, er progressive, professor being bullied and scared by one of those evil pro-war types.

Thank God we didn’t have any of those psycho WWII vets go to college where they would have gotten all argumentative and stuff.

I’m a 24-year veteran and earned my Bachelor’s Degree (Summa Cum Laude) just two years ago. Some of the sharpest and smartest individuals I’ve ever met were in the U.S. Navy and U.S Military. Some of the most ignorant and stupidest people I’ve ever encountered didn’t have any military experience.
This is terribly stereotypical. And it pisses me off no end!

I’m sure the frustrated and dangerous veteran returns with an ‘assault rifle’ and “persuades” the professor to change his C+ to a B. Inspired by Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck, of course.

Yeah, that’s about the attitude I expect from academia towards soldiers these days.
Sickening, and contemptuous that they display in this light those who make their positions and freedom to pursue their careers possible.
I was lucky. I actually had a number of very good teachers in my experience at the University of Wisconsin, along with my share of the narcissistic, disinterested, self-absorbed bunch. I had two political science classes. The advanced class I got an A in. The fundamental class, a D. Take a guess why a D was given.

what a dilemma:
whose more of a victim – the teacher or the vet!?!?! the vet – is he a voctimne of the war or the teacher? the teacher – is she a victim if th vet or of liberaliam?
bottom-line: grading should be and can always be objective.
and current events should have no place in most college classes.
then issues like the one depicted in this video wouldn’t ever happen.

I have several friends who are instructors in big colleges like Penn State, and most that have been teaching for awhile have a story like this, and a lot of them unfortunately involve vets (although most involve minority students).
I bet a million bucks the video was based on something that actually happened. And as soon as people complained, the video was pulled- why? Because the point wasn’t to insult vets, it was to illustrate dangerous behavior.
Either that, or Penn State, that bastion of liberalism, hates the military. Yes, that must be it.

Funny I wasn’t going to post this, because it sounded such a foolish post…but you paved the way.
I have friends that also teach, and their problems is with the black students, and the students who belong to the militant liberal groups.
They feel like any negative comment is toward them personally. They can work around the militant libs, but the blacks, if they decide to use the “bigot card”, is by far the most difficult…their answer, just pass them through. Because even with tenure, the one thing that gets you fired is the “race card”.

She was totally robbing him because he’s a vet. So obvious. I hope he get’s her fired.
ronsfi on April 7, 2009 at 9:07 PM
Ha Ha I love it. Veterans as victims terrorizing teachers. This is so low class it can win an award. I wish they had the sequel posted. I want to see what happens when the vet comes to class with a paper written by the administrator and gets the same grade at which time the administrator fires the teacher..
The problem with this is the antiwar teacher is allowed in the classroom in the first place. That hole in her head is obviously a requirement for the job. This veteran didn’t even have long hair and a scraggly beard. His eyes weren’t glazed over from drugs and booze. He didn’t carry a machete. He wasn’t even wearing cammi’s. Where is the realism? I say this is fake. There is no news here, let’s move along.

I don’t think it is particularly good for society as a whole that academia is so far left wing and so doctrinaire.
Have we really reached the point were a significant number of college professor can’t even understand that if they grading people on ideology that their victims are not going to be particularly happy about it?
The leftists that pulled the same sort of crap on me in the long ago knew they were screwing with me and in fact seemed to enjoy it.
Power and leftism are really a bad combination. Powerless leftists are at least amusing.

Entirely apart from the grotesque stereotyping of veterans, it’s a little shocking to think that the female faculty of a university in this day and age would accept such an unflattering caricature of a female academic.
In the final climatic scene, I kept expecting some heroic and appropriately enlightened metrosexual to come to the helpless female professor’s rescue.
Infidoll on April 7, 2009 at 9:12 PM
“My personal beliefs about the war have nothing to do with the way I treat you.”
Yeah, I can remember hearing that 40 years ago at San Diego State. Only there was no evasion. “If you’re not a ‘third worlder’, don’t bother coming to class anymore”.
GarandFan on April 7, 2009 at 9:13 PM
Well, I think a lot of the black students think that the teachers are being racist toward them when the teachers don’t give them an automatic pass. And why not? A lot of them get an automatic pass because the teachers are terrified of the accusation of racism. Happens pretty often.
The vets, unfortunately, tend to assume the teachers are super liberals, so they write super right wing papers, even if it doesn’t have anything to do with the subject. And when their papers aren’t good, they say, “She doesn’t like me because of my views,” and they don’t even try to fix their papers. They also tend to get aggressive, unfortunately.
By and large, most professors like the vets and conservatives because they tend to facilitate arguments. A room full of liberals doesn’t have a lot to talk about. I’ve met my share of liberal jerks that “hate everything military,” but there are a lot fewer of them than you think. This isn’t the 1960s-1970s – there are plenty of conservative professors out there.
Proud Rino on April 7, 2009 at 9:14 PM

Generally, by the time you’ve reached college, your professors aren’t going to teach you basic grammar or how to write a paper. You should have learned that already.
Proud Rino on April 7, 2009 at 9:16 PM
I went through college and few people besides other veterans knew that I was a veteran. If anyone had reason to be afraid, it was me; the campus liberal groups weren’t too fond your average military type.

Unfortunately, that’s not always true. Many colleges have to have remedial English and math clasess. Or they have math tutoring and “Writing Centers’ where students get help with work. A generation ago, this wasn’t needed.
From Penn State website. English 15 is Freshmen Comp.

HA !!!
BowHuntingTexas on April 7, 2009 at 9:33 PM
That really struck me: They teach grammar in COLLEGE?
Now THIS makes a lot more sense.
Did the video actually show any techniques for dealing with a disgruntled veteran trying to strangle the helpless professor? (Assuming you don’t count the sage advice of: “Uh, I guess if he tries to kill you, you should run away.”)
Instead, at the end, the potential professor-murderer storms off to file a complaint about her.
And the video offers a perfect solution to THAT problem: Beat him to the punch, and get on record accusing him of being a homocidal maniac early. That way, you can flunk him without having to defend your wildly ideological grading practices to anyone.
logis on April 7, 2009 at 9:34 PM
Schools have writing centers because you’re expected to be able to write a paper by the time you hit college. Not everyone can. For some people, English isn’t a first language, or they were admitted because of AA (in a toilet like PSU, this is particularly a problem, because you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel there).
Some kids are there because of math or engineering and are very bright in those things, but still need help writing papers.
But the point is, you’re expected to turn in something with solid grammar by the time you’re a freshman in college. If you can’t, you have to go to the writing center.
You know, like the lady in the video said?
Proud Rino on April 7, 2009 at 9:38 PM
Ok, I’ll bite….
Whether the story is based on a real event with a real veteran student is irrelevant.
Judging by the original site, the purpose of the vid is supposed to be to how to address a student who is unhappy about a grade and possibly being agressive about it.
Whether the agressive student is white, black, male, female, vet or not shouldn’t even come into it.
They could have easily portrayed the issue they’re trying to address without ever going there about the student being a vet…. they chose not to…..
dead-duck on April 7, 2009 at 9:39 PM
Sure. See my post above. You don’t think they’re teaching grammar in public schools do you? Or teaching them how to add, subtract, multiply or divide (without a calculator)? Ask anyone under 40 if they can diagram a sentence. Tell you the difference between active and passive voice. How to do long division.
Wethal on April 7, 2009 at 9:40 PM
I imagine the conversation went something like this:
Marine: We fought Islamists over there so we would not have to here.
CLP (crazy leftist professor): You are doing it for money and you don’t care if people die!
Marine: Yeah lady, sure. We just are just killing Iraqis for the heck of it, because the Islamists would be knitting them sweaters if we were cut and ran.
CLP: You admit it!!!!
Marine: In fact this one Islamist was just trying to give an RPG demonstration to a bus of school kids when I was so cruel as to shoot him.
CLP: You Christianists just can’t stand Role Playing Games…can you!!!
18-1 on April 7, 2009 at 9:43 PM
That’s what I thought.
I agree.
OK, so you’d like them to say, “I am mad at you. I cannot tell you why. I have a serious problem. YOU’LL SEE!”
Of course, they might be picking something that has happened and is likely to happen again, to help young graduate students, most of whom are teaching a class for the first time, deal with a very specific scenario.
Proud Rino on April 7, 2009 at 9:43 PM

God, seriously, if it were a black student, and Al Sharpton got all outraged, you would (correctly) call him an ultra PC douche.
Which is exactly what you all are.
If it were an antimilitary video, I’d agree. But it’s pretty obvious that the military thing is to explain why the student is angry. Like I said, it’s a pretty common scenario.

When I went to college, you took entrance tests in that crap. I remember making fun of dumb asses when I found out they had to take “remedial trigonometry.” But I don’t remember anybody who flunked reading and writing.
But if that’s true, then the video makes even less sense. If I ended up teaching a college level class to illiterates, I would WANT one of them to riddle me with machine gun fire.
logis on April 7, 2009 at 9:51 PM
If you’re expected to know it, then there is no need for a writing center. If there is a writing center, then you’re not expected to know it.
Penn State’s main campus is harder to get into than the satellite branches. Penn State Abington lets in students with a 2.5 GPA from Philly public schools. A mammal who walks upright can get that in some Philly public schools.
The truly unprepared students are the athletes. That’s where the money is. They turn in great papers, I’m told by professor friends, because the athletic departments have “tutors” who help them “revise” their papers. But then when there is an in-class, closed-book exam, the writing is barely literate.
Wethal on April 7, 2009 at 9:52 PM
Goodness what a horrible teacher.
At the VERY least she should have offered to have someone else grade a copy of his paper just to check (even confirm to herself) that the grade was in fact fair.

- The Cat
MirCat on April 7, 2009 at 9:53 PM
From Penn State’s “instructional” video:
Student: “You’ve made it very clear in your class how you feel about the war and you’re taking it out on me.”
Professor: “My personal beliefs have nothing to do with the way I treat you. I think you need to relax and we need to discuss this, or I could give you the number of someone to talk with if you feel like you want to get some help.”
In the video, there is no criticism or questioning about a professor using her classroom to push her “personal” (i.e. political) beliefs. There is not even any question as to whether her political beliefs are contributing to her low grading and fear of a student who holds conflicting political beliefs.
This is a liberal indoctrination video that supports the view that conservatives are dangerous, mentally ill, or both.
Your tax dollars at work.
Loxodonta on April 7, 2009 at 9:53 PM
They didn’t need to give a reason for the student to be upset with the teacher — sometimes there isn’t one.
All they need to get across was that it was a subjectively graded course (i.e. it was a paper, not a math problem) and the student was dissatisfied with how he was being graded.
Why he felt the teacher was being unfair to him isn’t really important. By adding that in, they open the door to stereotyping students and singling out one group. For rhat reason, they should have erred on the side of caution and made it as generic as possible.
For what it’s worth, when I was teaching I had one student that was p-o’d about his grade and harassed me a bit, he never gave me a reason (other than that he thought I was stupid and the worst teacher evah!)
