Sweet: Palin hits Obama on missile-defense cuts
posted at 8:31 pm on April 6, 2009 by Allahpundit
In one fell swoop, a well-placed criticism of Obama and a juicy cut of red meat for the base. Nicely played.
“I am deeply concerned with North Korea’s development and testing program which has clear potential of impacting Alaska, a sovereign state of the United States, with a potentially nuclear armed warhead,” Governor Palin said. “I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that we continue to develop and perfect the global missile defense network. Alaska’s strategic location and the system in place here have proven invaluable in defending the nation.”
Governor Palin stressed the importance of Fort Greely and the need for continued funding for the Missile Defense Agency. The governor is firmly against U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates’ proposed $1.4 billion reduction of the Missile Defense Agency. Greely’s isolated location in Alaska as well as its strategic location in the Pacific allows for maximum security and development of the country’s only ground-based missile defense complex.
“Our early opposition to reduced funding for the Missile Defense Agency is proving to be well-founded during this turbulent time,” Governor Palin said. “I continue to support the development and implementation of a defensive missile shield based in Alaska. We are strategically placed to defend the critical assets of the United States and our allies in the Pacific Theater.”
Missile defense isn’t even the worst cut, in my very poorly informed opinion. Scaling back the F-22 — a key to total air superiority — is. See Danger Room for details on that; the Pentagon wanted almost 200 fighters more but Gates decided that our new emphasis on wars of counterinsurgency means that 180+ are enough. He also decided to scale down Future Combat Systems, which is bad news for the warporn addict within but acceptable to bean counters. It sounded like a boondoggle.

Thank you for your insight, and thank you for your service! I am an Iraq vet myself, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you did. You tolerated the worst hell of war (and I am talking about the homefront) so that future generations wouldn’t have to. You got spit on and I got parades! I sincerely thank you for the sacrifices that you have made for your country!

He referred to her as Governor Palin in the same interview, in the SAME SENTENCE as the one where he referred to Wasilla as Wasilly.
But why would anyone bother to check. Who cares, when what you want to believe is more fun.

WHO CARES! I thought this was about the defense of our country, not who said what about whom? If you want, we will see about getting a thread titled “I know you are but what am I?!” so that you will have a proper place for your stupid argument! Until then, maybe we should be concerned about the defense of this nation. THE GREATEST NATION IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD–Regardless of who insulted who!
Now, pardon me while I step down off my soapbox before I fall off!

Sarah’s right and Barry’s wrong.
No reason to bicker over who’s going to replace Barry in 2012, let’s just try to give her a country worth running. If Americans deserved a conservative/libertarian prez we would have one. When we are a moral, educated, and religious enough people we will get another conservative/libertarian prez. Until then America needs a master.

Deza Veau – Carter years all over again.
Things are getting so bad, it’s weird, cause now I just laugh. Hey, when my husband, who’s never paid much attention to world events/politics, says today, I’m getting really scared about what’s happening, well, that tells me that people who don’t usually pay attention, are starting to pay attention.

I wasn’t born to walk on water
I wasn’t born to sack and slaughter
But on my soul, I wasn’t born
To stoop and knuckle under
A man can learn to steal some thunder
A man can learn to work some wonder
And when the gauntlet’s down,
It’s time to rise and climb the sky
And soon the moon will smolder
And the winds will drive
Yes, a man grows older but his soul remains alive
All those tremulous stars still glitter
And I will survive!
Let my heart grow colder and as bitter as a falcon in the dive
There was a dream, a dying ember
There was a dream, I don’t remember
But I will resurrect that dream
Though rivers stream and hills grow steeper
For here in hell where life gets cheaper
Oh, here in hell the blood runs deeper
And when the final duel is near
I’ll lift my spear and fly
Piercing into the sky and higher
And the strong will thrive
Yes, the weak will cower while the fittest will survive
If we wait for the darkest hour
Till we spring alive
Then with claws of fire, we will devour like a falcon in the dive!

I agree with you about the F-22. I think it’s incredibly short sited for politicians to discount such an advanced aircraft just because we don’t need it this very minute. However, I’m encouraged by the fact that Gates is encouraging the faster production of the F-35 which is capable of everything the F-22 is and more.

sigh… once more… with feeling…
The reason the economy tanked when it did was the Change in Mark to Market rules which went into effect in Nov 2007. The stated that the rules had to be implemented by all companies during the next Fiscal year… which eneded in Oct 2008.
Please think back to when the economy suddenly tanked, with no warning… could it be… Sept / Oct 2008? Right before the election?
The trigger was a change in government regulation. Not the CAUSE, but the trigger…
They relaxed Mark to Market last week, and EVERY DAY since they announced they were going to change it, the Market has been up.
Regulation, ie, Government RULES, CAUSED this whole mess.
But please, continue on your partisan rant… because you are soooooo… independent…. not…

People who whine about Obama spending money are the same people who want every new weapons system, even ones that don’t work or we don’t need. So should we go bankrupt to get all these systems? We could be like the old Russia, big military, people starving in civilian populations. Please run that clown from Alaska.

Poptech on April 6, 2009 at 11:08 PM
This sounds pedantic, I know, but the F-35 isn’t in the F-22′s league in the air dominance arena. Yes, it’s stealthy & maneuverable, but it’s a multirole airplane. The F-22 is a dogfighting thoroughbred.

A. Russia had a communist system that failed to reward capitalism and business innovation, among other failures. Their military was a much larger percentage of the GDP than ours during the U.S.S.R. years as well (larger % than ours is now also).
B. In that context, I well remember when Reagan was ridiculed for S.D.I. that “it’s like hitting a bullet with a bullet” and “it’ll never work.” Let’s see, the mantra now is it’s an “untested” weapon system…. but how many of those “bullets” have been hit so far?

There are some that are unjustifiable. I have a hard time with Obama cutting defense while throwing cash at the U.A.W.

We are occupying TWO countrys… and Iran, NORKS, Russia (remember Georigia?), and China, are all feeling frisky…
Would you rather pay for an AWSOME weapon, that overawes the enemy to the point where you never have to use it? or save a few bucks and get some of our Service people killed.
Romeo13 on April 6, 2009 at 11:20 PM
The average age of our airplanes is 25 years, how many people are driving 25 year old cars. the left better hope they don’t pass an assault weapons ban, they will be needing them.
Sven on April 6, 2009 at 11:22 PM
I for one don’t think the N. Koreans are suicidal. But the weak way of dealing with them is counterproductive.
Look at the DMZ. We don’t want them to be provocative, they don’t want us to either. But, if they can lob a missile over Japan and call it launching a “satellite,” improve their technology, and end up negotiating for more $ assistance… what’s the downside for them again?
By the same token, if they launched the missile but one of the Japanese batteries had taken it out before or after it passed over Japan, I don’t think we would’ve seen war. They would’ve been “offended” and angry, but mostly embarrassed.
Of course, if the anti-missile technology failed, it would have been a black eye for us.
Maybe Obama just doesn’t trust this technology to work in this high-stakes poker.

I will try to state this one more time. The F35 is a multi role fighter/bomber. Anytime you apply the word multi to anything it is a compromise. The F22 is king of the skies now and in any future engagement they will be relied upon to dominate the skies over any US operation. The F35 cannot survive in a hostile air envioroment without the F22. People are prone to say that the F22 is capabale of 30 to 1 kill ratios but that doesn’t count mechanical or other defense commitments. Plus each aircraft carries about six missiles which means that it has to retun to be rearmed before it can be of any use. Divide 187 by all of the issues at hand and you will see that the numbers are not enough. Maybe there should be a national referendum on priorities instead of one party deciding the future defense of our nation. Clinton made the military “Budget Cut Central” and it looks like Obama is doing the same thing.

Norwegian on April 6, 2009 at 11:55 PM
Tell that to the people who die in a first strike.
The reason for Reagan’s SDI was so that there would be no need for a second strike, or a retaliatory strike. It was a way to counter the then prevailing attitude of Mutually Assured Destruction (or MAD). Sure, it’s a way of making sure that if your civilians get nuked theirs do to, but the victory is pyrric at best.
And no, I don’t think Kim Jong Il is suicidal, just irrational, and that might be all it takes to push the button! He doesn’t care for his own people (they’re starving to death in droves right now) and perhaps down the road, he may not care for himself!
And what if he’s not the one who presses the button down the road?
And not to mention Iran and the rest of those Islamofacists. Some of them want to die and wouldn’t mind setting the world on fire while doing so!
While you’re at it, tell that to the people (on both sides might I add) who die in the retaliatory strikes. A single nuke would devastate all of North Korea (and the fallout would certainly harm China, Japan, and South Korea).

What? What does that have to do with 180 vs 200 $138 Million a piece F-22s? The costs are just absurd, how can you justify it costing such an absurd amount more than the $18 Million F-16? Maybe I am the only one who can do math here.
Poptech on April 7, 2009 at 12:20 AM
Where did I get common sense? Try answering this question, was lack of air power and not enough F-22s the problem in Iraq? I mean we have had carriers in the gulf for years now using their aircraft to do nothing but waste fuel because their capabilities are redundant to the air force and this is with 1970s air tech.
Poptech on April 7, 2009 at 12:23 AM

That would be plausible, and would reflect well on Obama to “take the high road.” But as a couple others have already pointed out, that’s not what actually happened. The very next day, he was speaking dismissively of her as “mayor of Wasilly.”
Your simple explanation, that it was a mistake, is matched by the equally simple explanation that it was intentional. Which is more likely?
Granted, Wanderlust went into a lot more detail defending the claim it was intentional, but that adds to its likelihood, compared to … no evidence at all that it was a simple mistake.

Non sequitur. The F-22 exists to square off with another nation’s air assets, not to fight a counterinsurgency.
You seem to be arguing against the F-22 on that basis alone. It is illogical to extrapolate so broadly from Iraq & Afghanistan.
Our strategic acquisitions must prepare for many possible kinds of wars. Nobody (not even you, genius) can guarantee that we’ll almost exclusively fight insurgencies so regularly for the next several decades that we can afford to ignore the likelihood of war with another modern military. The other military powers are fielding 5th generation fighters. If we neglect the Raptor, our F-35s and aging Hornets/Eagles/Falcons will be easy meat.
Are you even superficially acquainted with the Su-35? The EuroFighter? Any 5th (or even late-4th) generation fighters? Please explain how Obama-won Kenobi decisions reassure you that we can hang with those potential enemies without a lot more Raptors.
P.S. — Do you think counterinsurgency warfare is possible without first securing air dominance? Oooo … didn’t see that one coming, did ya, Poptech?

No, Allah called it right. The CNN Ticker Headline read, “Palin slams Obama on missile defense” earlier today.

Good try but sorry, Palin is making more sense regarding this issue than the entire Obama administration.
Palin scores a TKO!!

Mitt can see the Kennedy compound from his house in Mass. He can also see the Mormon Temple from his other house. He can see the mountain from his house in Aspen, he can see the ocean waters from his house in Malibu, he can see the eifel tower from his house in Paris, and the blue ocean waters from his house in Tahiti.

You do realize that “Austrian” is not a language and that fogw was mocking Obama’s recent embarassing gaffe that Austrians speak Austrian?

According to Allahpundit, it was not 180 plus F-22′s v. 200 F-22′s, rather it was 180 plus F-22′s instead of about 400 F-22′s (180 plus + just under 200 more).
However, having 180 plus F-22′s or 400 plus/minus F-22′s seems a lot less important than the missile defense cutbacks. That, as I see it, should be the primary target here.

And it took a little ole’ hockey mom from Wasilla to do it!

Nah, that would require him to come up with some new material.

Poptech,
Perhaps reading comprehension is not your strong suit, but the F22 argument is not 180 Vs. 200, it is 180 Vs. 380 aircraft. So yes, it is important. A 10% cut would mean very little, but a program cut of more than 50% is huge.

Help us Governor Sarah Palin, you’re our only hope.

“I am deeply concerned with North Korea’s development and testing program which has clear potential of impacting Alaska, a sovereign state of the United States, with a potentially nuclear armed warhead,” Governor Palin said.
Up here in Alaska, we have something called the Alaska Territorial Guard, that will protect our soverign state if it is ever needed.
obama is irritating a lot of people; the new PM of Israel, Netanyahu, who has commented that if need be against Iran, it will go it alone, and if obama will not do anything about Alaska and the western US, palin will
ConservativePartyNow on April 7, 2009 at 1:57 AM
Good luck with that one.
Screw the Russian military. We got the Alaskan National Guard with Sarah Palin as Xenu warrior princess to command!!!!

I went into a bit of detail because I wanted to illustrate what I believe to be an important point: people at Obama’s level (that is, people who have a lot to gain and a lot more to lose, in a contest/negotiation) do not generally make “simple mistakes”. A “simple mistake” would be called a “gaffe”. Smokin’ Joe Biden is full of gaffes. But Joe wasn’t running for President at that moment; Obambi was.
Obambi may come off as stupid and uneducated on finance, world affairs, and military strategy, but he is most certainly not uneducated on politics and elections, for the most part.
Elections are, in one sense, a very complex, ongoing negotiation. Contractual negotiations have been part of my work for the past several years, hence my interest.
So yes, everyone makes mistakes at one time or another.
But, consider the factors involved:
The timing of the comment (the next morning following Sarah’s nomination to Veep); downplaying her political position (referring to her as “Mayor”); and the sarcastic, almost juvenile sounding mis-pronounciation of the city name (“Wasilly”) add up to be something that Obama planned to do, as a strategic move against the McCain/Palin ticket, rather than as a mistake.
Credit where credit is due. Obama is a consummate politician.
Nothing more, and nothing less.
Or would you rather blame his “mistake” on the lack of his having a candidate for TOTUS to guide him? :)
