Sweet: Palin hits Obama on missile-defense cuts

posted at 8:31 pm on April 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

In one fell swoop, a well-placed criticism of Obama and a juicy cut of red meat for the base. Nicely played.

“I am deeply concerned with North Korea’s development and testing program which has clear potential of impacting Alaska, a sovereign state of the United States, with a potentially nuclear armed warhead,” Governor Palin said. “I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that we continue to develop and perfect the global missile defense network. Alaska’s strategic location and the system in place here have proven invaluable in defending the nation.”

Governor Palin stressed the importance of Fort Greely and the need for continued funding for the Missile Defense Agency. The governor is firmly against U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates’ proposed $1.4 billion reduction of the Missile Defense Agency. Greely’s isolated location in Alaska as well as its strategic location in the Pacific allows for maximum security and development of the country’s only ground-based missile defense complex.

“Our early opposition to reduced funding for the Missile Defense Agency is proving to be well-founded during this turbulent time,” Governor Palin said. “I continue to support the development and implementation of a defensive missile shield based in Alaska. We are strategically placed to defend the critical assets of the United States and our allies in the Pacific Theater.”

Missile defense isn’t even the worst cut, in my very poorly informed opinion. Scaling back the F-22 — a key to total air superiority — is. See Danger Room for details on that; the Pentagon wanted almost 200 fighters more but Gates decided that our new emphasis on wars of counterinsurgency means that 180+ are enough. He also decided to scale down Future Combat Systems, which is bad news for the warporn addict within but acceptable to bean counters. It sounded like a boondoggle.

Blowback

Sarah Palin 2012

She is hitting back at Obama. Here is the money quote:

“Our early opposition to reduced funding for the Missile Defense Agency is proving to be well-founded during this turbulent time,” Governor Palin said.

She warned about it in the republican convention and throughout the campaign trail. It was a direct attack at Obama.

Gates has to work within the limitations given to him by the President. My guess is that he is doing the best that could be done considering those limitations.

Allah, she’s focusing on missile defense because it’s based in Alaska. If she’d hit Obambi for F-22s, that’d make it national. She won’t be touching national issue at least until after the legislative session is over.

promachus on April 6, 2009 at 8:47 PM

I think I know where Gates is coming from on the F-22. Most of our wars over the last 20 years have been light on air to air and heavy on bombing runs and ground assaults. The F-22 isn’t really good for bombing and useless for ground support.

I’m not happy to see the program shut down but if the money is diverted into systems that support these things, then it’s a good trade-off. But the future is a tricky thing…

As a career military person, I am surprised that Gates would 1-stay with a$$hat, 2-allow our defense system to be compromised. He used to be one of my favorite people, but since he became part of ogabis’ tribe, he is now just a tool, no self-respect……*sigh*

clinker46 on April 6, 2009 at 8:48 PM

Missile defense isn’t even the worst cut, in my very poorly informed opinion. Scaling back the F-22 — a key to total air superiority — is.

Now I am probably the last person you want to ask with regards to military issues, but unless I am mistaken the F-22 is not supposed to be the fighter of the future. It is for sure the best fighter out there, but it costs a rediculous amount, which is why the DoD put on the JSF competition and how we got the F-35.

If we can maintain air superiority with the F-35, and at a lower cost, then I dont see an issue with that particular cut back.

EconomicPirate on April 6, 2009 at 8:48 PM

So Gates is willing to bet our country on his notion that we will always be fighting an insurgency instead of a conventional war? Has he looked out the window lately at Russia or North Korea? These countries are being led by men that we may, in future years, look back and describe as madmen.

This is a calculated move to lessen our strength so that we won’t be the only superpower. Less muss, less fuss, and we won’t be disliked anymore. Right?

Aide: He’s from North Korea Governor.

Governor: I went down to North Carolina and met with Real Americans in North Carolina – what were they thinking when they elected this guy?

Semi-related to weapons spending, bonuses and other incentives for enlistees are getting slashed almost universally right now. That, combined with the new GI Bill that goes into effect on August 1st is going to make it harder to bring new soldiers in while encouraging our best and brightest soldiers to get out after only 3 years.

When you connect the dots, President Obama looks pretty much exactly like what we feared during the election.

I think Charles Krauthammer really hit the nail on the head tonight. (pun intended)

Everybody wants to live in a nuclear-free world, but the only way that that is going to happen is to render nuclear weapons useless with anti-missile defense.

Even if hell froze over and Russia and the US totally disarmed, you have the ever-prevalent rogue regimes with their Cracker-Jack (yet just-as-deadly) nukes, as well as countries like Pakistan and India, who could possibly trust us enough to disarm, but would never trust each other enough to disarm.

Contrary to popular liberal belief, Reagan was believed in a world without nuclear weapons, but believed that America’s safety came first… ergo Star Wars (a term I use with reverence rather than mockery).

Yet in the face of the world we live in, the libtards believe that Reagan was a madman that will get us all killed, that Mahmoud “Tom” Ahmadinejad is benign, and that Obama’s teleprompter doubles as a nuclear shield.

We truly appreciate Gov.Palin and objectively think she’s the best candidate for 2012. We aren’t tearing down other candidates and if somebody else is nominated, we will get behind them real fast because our objective is to defeat the Libs and Obama not start intramural wars in GOP.

promachus on April 6, 2009 at 8:57 PM

Very good move by Palin. If I were her – I’d open negotiations with the Russians since Bambi’s naive defense policies appear they will lead us to domination by either the Russians or China. I would hedge the bet if I were her.

Possible WWIII scenario …

Simultaneously …

1. NK marches into South Korea.
2. Chinese march into Taiwan.
3. Iran nukes Israel.
4. Russia marches into the former Communist bloc republics and tells EUROPE to STFO of the conflict or the pipeline goes dry.

If you saw all that in the newspaper tomorrow morning, What do you think would be Bambi’s response? What do you think would be Europe’s response and finally – what do you think would be the UN’s response?

We’re screwed folks. If these guys start coordinating (and evidence suggests they already are) we are screwed.

EconomicPirate on April 6, 2009 at 8:48 PM

Sure, the F-35 might be pefectly adequate for now, but what about in 10 years? Or 20? Designing a new modern fighter isn’t something that’s done in a year or two.

Whatever Russia comes up with in the next couple of decades will no doubt end up in the inventory of those countries hostile to the US. The F-35 is a very worthy project, but cutting the F-22 is short sighted; we don’t know what the future holds.

I know what he’s doing, Skywise. My first sentence, again, is he’s betting the house that we won’t have a nation-state style war in the near future. And the joint strike fighter is a poor substitute for the F-22. A cell-style tactic will do nothing to shoot down a missle launched at the US or its allies. So let’s get this straight: capitulus can use ‘inbreeding’ ‘kinfolk’ and ‘purdy’ to insinuate something but Towash is to be chided for using ‘basketball’ and ‘rapping’?

carbon_footprint on April 6, 2009 at 9:07 PM

I suggest you stay away from your uncles regardless of how great they are at basketball and rapping.

Towash on April 6, 2009 at 9:03 PM

Having BHO as president is even better knowing that there are idiot racists like you out there. Sorry about #3, btw.

capitulus on April 6, 2009 at 9:07 PM

No, it’s due to constant turning of your head to one side, then to the other, then back again, trying to keep up with Mr. Teleprompter.

I’m sure you’re familiar with it. Your Leader is.

fogw on April 6, 2009 at 9:03 PM

Have Teleprompter Will Travel reads the card of the man.
A cipher without a thought of his own in what he’s turning into a bankrupt land.

His ah, oh, umm, loose mouth heeds the calling of a Soros wind.
A man without a clue of his own is the cipher called Obamadin.

Obamadin, Obamadin, Where do you roam?
Obamadin, Obamadin, Just be sure to never leave your teleprompter at home.

He travels on to campaign whenever he feels he must
His yearning for power is his guiding lust

These are legends that themselves do spin
Of the Ventriloquist’s dummy
Of the cipher called Obamadin

Obamadin, Obamadin, Where do you roam?
Obamadin, Obamadin, Just be sure to never leave your teleprompter at home.

capitulus on April 6, 2009 at 9:07 PM

Wow, that is racist.
You have been warned by AP earlier today. It’s just too hard for you to keep away from racist remarks isn’t it?

carbon_footprint on April 6, 2009 at 9:09 PM

Now I am probably the last person you want to ask with regards to military issues, but unless I am mistaken the F-22 is not supposed to be the fighter of the future. It is for sure the best fighter out there, but it costs a rediculous amount, which is why the DoD put on the JSF competition and how we got the F-35.

If we can maintain air superiority with the F-35, and at a lower cost, then I dont see an issue with that particular cut back.

Well, the F-22 could beat down the F-35 in a dogfight. BUT, the F-35 should be able to kill most bad guys before they ever get close enough to see each other. So… we definitely need some F-22s, but yeah, the F-35 should dominate our fleet.

Palin-_______ will win in 2012 by a landslide.

So Allahpundit, how are you handling the twitter outage? By what percentage has your Jack consumption increased?

jimmy the notable on April 6, 2009 at 9:10 PM

This means of course that the media whores will be deluging every possible information medium with tale after disparaging tale about Bristol Palin, her ex and how Sarah likes to hunt poor, defenseless critters from a helicopter.
