Spitzer: Hey, sorry about that whole prostitution thing

posted at 3:55 pm on April 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

From this morning’s Today show, America’s most famous john returns with mechanical intonations about his “egregious” betrayal and other boilerplate from the politician’s handbook of public remorse. Given his reputation as the scourge of Wall Street, imagine how high his political stock would have been post-financial meltdown if only he’d been able to keep his pants on. As it is, he’s primed for a comeback of some sort: Not only is his successor’s approval rating eye-poppingly disastrous, but after Blagojevich, Spitz’s scandal seems almost quaint. To what office can he reasonably aspire, though? He blew his chance at governor (no pun intended); Schumer will have his Senate seat for as long as he wants it and Gillibrand is already raising boatloads of cash to hold onto hers. Congress is an option, I guess, but my hunch is he’d be more vulnerable to personal attacks in a smaller election like that where the winner is seen as representing a close community rather than the entire state. His best bet is to rehabilitate his image to the point where it’s safe-ish for The One to appoint him to some financial oversight task force. A few more headlines about TARP money being spent without appropriate Treasury supervision and I suspect the public will become very forgiving indeed about Spitz. We’ve got an ex-Klansman, a guy who left a woman to drown, and, yes, another john already in the Senate. Why not Client Number Nine as bailout czar?

Note what he says about his little habit having been infrequent. Hmmmmm.

I think Spitzer would still be in trouble after the financial meltdown considering he was shaking down companies for campaign contributions.

In fact, it could be argued that him chasing out AIG chairman Hank Greenberg lead to the management decisions that got AIG into this mess to begin with.

teke184 on April 6, 2009 at 3:58 PM

I bet he’s soory…sorry he got caught that is.

kanda on April 6, 2009 at 3:58 PM

To what office can he reasonably aspire, though?

The Board of Gaming of Nevada. Opps wrong State.

It could be argued… It would also be true. But who will argue that? Nobody.

John_Locke on April 6, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Does Barney Frank count as a johnjoan? He did let his house operate as a brothel.

WashJeff on April 6, 2009 at 4:01 PM

Sorry, Elliot. BillyJeff was a charming rascal who managed to rebrand himself. You’re not.

Wethal on April 6, 2009 at 4:02 PM

Scumbag and woman-exploiter. Such people do not change their attitudes toward women just because they got caught and publicly humiliated.

rockmom on April 6, 2009 at 4:02 PM

Why can’t the dead just stay dead?

Man, I hate “politician zombies.”

Not Over.

1GooDDaDDy on April 6, 2009 at 4:02 PM

Really?

Really?

why can’t people just go away?

like the Osbournes. Just when I thought I could breathe a sigh of relief, they come back with ANOTHER stupid TV show. Another one.

People need to learn to go away.

But I guess attention is like crack for them

blatantblue on April 6, 2009 at 4:03 PM

Pay for play politics.

the_nile on April 6, 2009 at 4:03 PM

Exactly what we need, yet another incompetent and corrupt Democrat on the scene.

Because if there is anything we really need right now, it’s more corrupt, incompetent Democrats to help us solve our problems.

NoDonkey on April 6, 2009 at 4:03 PM

Some of the sleaziest politicians in recent times have all been Democrats.

And with the help of a PR firm known as the MSM, they have been able to resuscitate their careers after getting caught.

They even can become President.

Just lovely. What a country.

What is Mel “Jackpot” Reynolds up to lately?

benrand on April 6, 2009 at 4:06 PM

NBC is the new Emperor’s Club. Same difference for Spitzer.

RobCon on April 6, 2009 at 4:06 PM

I think it is appropriate for Spitz to be on the Today show…

Isn’t there more to his problems than the hooker? Didn’t he misuse his power?

roux on April 6, 2009 at 4:09 PM

Truth is if he had finished his investigation of AIG we might have a saved a few 100 billion. As is, he was canned for ‘moral outrage’ in a country which elects it’s leaders like an American Idol contest. Sure he was ruthless on Wall St. but Bush and Paulson (Goldman Sachs) did next to nothing to stop it (remember “It’s contained” Aug. 2007).

SocratesShadow on April 6, 2009 at 4:12 PM

Is he still married? Last time I saw his wife she looked a bit bothered.

a capella on April 6, 2009 at 4:13 PM

He should be used for clinical studies of malignant narcissistic personality disorder.

Ted Torgerson on April 6, 2009 at 4:15 PM

Being a Democrat he’s half way to political redemption…if only he were openly gay…

moxie_neanderthal on April 6, 2009 at 4:17 PM

Well Dear Leader is screwing us over, so why not bring back a john.

rbj on April 6, 2009 at 4:17 PM

Matt Lauer, fair and balanced: “He got caught up in a prostitution scandal,” as if he were an innocent bystander. He disgraced the office of governor with his blatant, arrogant abuse of the law. Unlike a typical Democratic slimeball who clings to office long past the time he should (Charlie Rangel, Ted Kennedy), Spitzer’s offenses were so flagrant and indefensible that he had no choice but to resign.

The only faintly positive thing that can be said about him is that, unlike Blago, he knew when it was time to leave, unlike Governor Psycho who needed to be slapped down by the legislature.

EMD on April 6, 2009 at 4:17 PM

Democrat.

Akzed on April 6, 2009 at 4:18 PM

As is, he was canned for ‘moral outrage’

Seems to me he resigned, he wasn’t “canned”.

And he resigned because he became a national joke and couldn’t perform his job effectively.

Or was he another untouchable like our glorious Sect. of the Treasury?

Spitzer is and was a worthless bonehead who has a hardon for more than just whores, he always has been all about shameless self-promotion.

Don’t need him, don’t want him, get lost Eliot you pathetic excuse for a human being.

capitulus on April 6, 2009 at 4:22 PM

He would be an excellent choice to take over any womens rights legislation. Plus he comes from the private sector where they pay for sex, rather than the current administration that screws taxpayers for free.

workingforpigs on April 6, 2009 at 4:23 PM

This is one scumbag we shouldn’t let near politics.
He’s the genius who drove the guy who built AIG out. Just because he didn’t like him. And look how well that turned out.

Even the libs are already sick of Paterson, so they’re trying to anoint Andrew “HUD” Cuomo to replace him. I’d actually like Paterson to force a primary fight. Republicans (Hey Steele, pay attention) should start smacking Andy for his hand in causing the economic crisis and for his disgusting extortion tactics on the AIG employees, among others.

Rudy would actually have a decent shot (Cuomo allegedly is polling better) but he’d really have to drain Albany’s swamp to get any reforms.

Iblis on April 6, 2009 at 4:24 PM

Unlike most corrupt dems, at least with Spitz we’d know where he’s spending the ill-gotten. Instead of off-shore accounts and estates in Ireland, he’d be buying hookers who then spend it locally on makeup and clothes. Buy American!

innominatus on April 6, 2009 at 4:24 PM

“Welcome, Governor Spitzer. Whore you doing? Er, how are you doing? I didn’t Ashley mean to say that. I mean actually.”

Jim Treacher on April 6, 2009 at 4:25 PM

He would be an excellent addition to the corrupt bunch at the helm. He already knows how to take money and use it for his own purpose all on taxpayer time.

Maybe he will date Barney Frank, they could have a love child and it would be a lawyer.

workingforpigs on April 6, 2009 at 4:27 PM

Let the record show that the Kid called it back when HA blogged Spitz’ written piece (Slate or the Beast?)

Kid from Brooklyn on April 6, 2009 at 4:29 PM

Comparatively speaking (as far as Democrats go) unlike Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and the Obiminable Snowman, Spitzer’s looking pretty good. All he did was f— a hooker, not the entire nation. Of course, in addition to the entire nation, Faggy Frank is getting in a little buggery on the side. Speaking of REMF’s Frank puts the emphasis on “rear” in “rear echelon”. Final advice: Buy Al Qaeda war bonds–hell, Obama’s doing it!Maybe he’s shorting his own country.

MaiDee on April 6, 2009 at 4:31 PM

I can’t believe the balls on this MF. It’s been a year and he thinks we’ve all forgotten? If this douche bag manages to resurrect a political career at this point, we are doomed and people really are as stupid as I think they are.

Smooth Rooster on April 6, 2009 at 4:32 PM

Oh well he is Sorry. Huh all is forgiven come on back Governor, never mind you used to prosecute people for this behavior, or that you betrayed the people of your state, your legal ethics, The court System in New York, your wife your children and the trust of everyone who voted for you…you are sorry, and that is good enough.

NOT!

LincolntheHun on April 6, 2009 at 4:35 PM

That settles it… Obama will now bring him in as the official White House spanker

gatorboy on April 6, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Did Spitzer swallow?

His pride I mean.

Barney Frank wants to know.

NoDonkey on April 6, 2009 at 4:45 PM

I’m sure it was unintentional, but do you really want to use the term “eye-poppingly” in reference to David Paterson?

I really can’t understand how a black, handicapped man could not have higher approval ratings.

Maybe he needs to take up homosexuality in order to improve his performance while in office, that would give him a trifecta of media approved mascots.

NoDonkey on April 6, 2009 at 4:55 PM

Kennedy, Dodd, and Frank still have jobs, too. Vitter didn’t kill anyone, as I recall.

Wethal on April 6, 2009 at 5:04 PM

Kennedy, Dodd, and Frank still have jobs, too.

They are indispensable.

No one can screw up the country like they can, they have unique skills that cannot be replaced.

NoDonkey on April 6, 2009 at 5:06 PM

The problem isn’t just his personal behavior. I could care less if people use prostitutes. Dinner and movie for a blowjob? Sure. A monetary equivalent of a dinner and a movie? Wow, now you’re crossing some lines there! Yeah, right…

He put a lot of people in prison for this very offense. This is beyond hypocrisy. Clearly, he was in a position where following the law should be even higher on his list of priorities.

radiofreevillage on April 6, 2009 at 5:11 PM

He needs to be sorry for forcing Hank Greenberg out of the company he founded, AIG. That little witch hunt cost the nation trillions.

TheBigOldDog on April 6, 2009 at 5:15 PM

Note what he says about his little habit having been infrequent.

Well there ya go. It’s not so bad if you don’t do it, like, alot I guess. Just a thought….the Zodiac killer can most likely get some guilt reduction using that logic…..

Is there such a thing as “half guilty”?

BobMbx on April 6, 2009 at 5:17 PM

Mark Levin is right about Spitzer being a complete schmuck!

pilamaye on April 6, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Those of us who know what Spitzer was up to as AG and Governor, know that visiting prostitutes and money laundering are the mild part. This guy is a tyrant on steroids, and doesn’t deserve to be within 5,000 miles of the government of a free republic. Maybe if they revive the Soviet Union, there will be a place where he’d fit in.

Oh, wait a minute, then he’ll probably do just fine as a replacement for Tim Geithner. Silly me.

If you don’t know the story of Spitzer’s Reign of Terror, see here and here.
