Obama assassination plot foiled in Turkey? Update: Hoax?

posted at 5:25 pm on April 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Turkish security forces claim to have foiled a plot to assassinate our President, at least according to the Saudi daily Al-Watan.  The assassin posed as an Al-Jazeera reporter, and confessed to having three other accomplices (via Tommy Christopher and the College Politico):

Turkish security services have arrested a man of Syrian descent who was planning to assassinate US President Barack Obama during his current trip to Turkey, the Saudi daily Al Watan reported Monday.

According to the report, the man, who was arrested on Friday, was carrying a press card identifying him as an employee of Al Jazeera. He reportedly confessed to his intention to stab Obama with a knife and said that he was aided by three accomplices.

The report stated that Turkish authorities were still unsure as to whether the press card was a fake or whether it had actually been issued the man by the Qatari news network.

For their part, Al-Jazeera says they have no idea who the man is, or how he got the ID.

I’m not seeing anything in the wire services or in the American newspapers about this attempt. I’m unsure as to whether this is for real, or just a Saudi or Turkish fantasy.  If so, it’s a strange one; why would they want to concoct a story where a Muslim plotted to kill Barack Obama?  He didn’t the kind of adulation in Turkey that some may have expected, but he certainly got a warm reception. If they were going to make something up, they probably could have thought of something better than a knife attack.  It takes four people to conspire to a stabbing?

If it’s on the level, we owe the Turks a big thank you.  We may oppose Barack Obama’s policies, but he’s still our President.  I’m betting that this is something less than advertised, however.

Update: The AP reports that this is a hoax, but the details sound less convincing:

Turkish police detained a man after receiving a hoax tip that he was plotting to kill President Barack Obama but quickly released him without charge, a government official said Tuesday.

The official, who is close to police operations in Turkey, said police detained the suspect — a Turkish national — on Friday after receiving an anonymous e-mail which even gave the suspect’s address in Istanbul. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of rules that bar civil servants from speaking to the media without prior authorization.

“There was nothing serious. Police released the man and said he was mentally disturbed,” the official said. “The tip turned out to be a hoax. The IP address from which the e-mail was sent was traced to the United States.”

So police arrested — and then released — a mentally-disturbed individual?   Um, okay.  The tip came from an e-mail from the US, or at least someone using an e-mail system based in the US, but they had the suspect’s address and apparently knew his mental state.  I’m not sure the word “hoax” is correct here; maybe “overreaction” might be better.

The Secret Service will follow up on the report, but as I suspected, it was less than advertised.

I don’t think Ogabe and the Turks put together a plan to fake an assassination attempt just to get Ogabe’s numbers up. If it were ever found out, Ogabe and the dems would be lucky to survive the reaction back in America.

It’s funny. For a blog where half of the members claim Obama is a secret marxist out to destroy the United States, by hook or by crook, emphasis on crook, and I’m one of them, there seems to be a consensus that, heaven forbid anything should happen to him.

Yet, and this is the kicker, while the blog management allows anyone to say he is the mortal enemy of the US and of freedom and liberty, basically just shy of the anti-Christ if not in intent, at least the end result, it won’t allow anyone to wish any ill on such a mortal enemy.

Funny you bring that up-I happened to stumble across a special issue of Newsweak the other day that came out soon after 9/11.

First, I had to pick myself up off the floor after falling out of my chair while reading this issue. The wingnuts like Jonayhan Alter and Evan Thomas were actually making sense. Obviously they had all been rendered temporarily insane by the worst loss of civilian life on US soil in the country’s history.

Anyway, one of the major articles about the post-9/11 world was entitled “Next Up: Saddam”. It was about the inevitability of the US taking out Hussein. The authors, Christopher Dickey and John Barry, were actually objective in their reporting, and even reported the fact that many of Iraq’s neighbors had concluded after 9/11 that the guy definitely had to go.

However, part of their opening paragraph for the story is what caught my eye. I doubt they would be allowed to write these words now.

In 1993, after the gulf war and before the first President Bush retired as commander in chief, Saddam tried to murder him with a car bomb in Kuwait, but the Clinton Administration didn’t want to hear about it. The new President’s staff encouraged diplomats in the region to play down the aborted attack, especially the incriminating evidence that pointed directly to Baghdad.

The reasons: the White House didn’t want to have to react; it didn’t have a policy for eliminating Saddam; it wasn’t even sure how best to contain him. Eventually, reluctantly, Bill Clinton fired off a few cruise missiles and relie don exile groups, covert comspiracies and overt sanctions to defang the vengeful dictator. That policy fell apart in 1998, and four days of intense bombing called Operation Desert Fox coudln’t put it back together again.

The only problem is that we are already the socialist state of America, and without a shot fired too. Nope, I think I’d be OK with a new national holiday, and if it caused some folks to grasp the reality of the evil that is Islam, that would be a two-fer.

Obama flinches at 2:27.

milwife88 on April 6, 2009 at 8:37 PM

“There are two reasons I do not want Obama assassinated:”

1) It’s just not ethically, morally right to do so.

2) President Biden.

3) Puts Pelosi one step closer to the White House

GFW on April 6, 2009 at 6:35 PM

Did you know that according to Biden, jobs is a 3 letter word?

Guardian on April 6, 2009 at 8:37 PM

How is this a disconnect? Just because I think someone might be a crook doesn’t mean I wish bodily harm on them. Do you?

It’s a huge disconnect. If we are to believe, as many here do, that obama’s agenda is to usurp the constitution and destroy the republic as it has existed for over 200 years, and that he is in fact trying to turn the US into some pseudo-fascist state, then why would it be unAmerican to wish harm on such an enemy of the US?

My point is the blog management can’t have it both ways. They can’t sanction the sentiment that there is a man in power who is there as a Manchurian candidate, a man of duplicitous intent, surreptitiously working to undermine the principles upon which the US was founded, yet have a policy that forbids any wishing of an early departure of the bringer of treachery and ruin.

And yes, by allowing a comment to stand, they de facto sanction it. This is evidenced by their deleting comments they feel put the blog in a bad light. Ergo, this narrative of the leader as a treasonous marxist Manchurian candidate, a very common theme here, is perceived by management as being acceptable. So it is completely inconsistent and intellectually disingenuous to accept this narrative of the commentariat and yet maintain an editorial position that the commentariat must not wish any harm should come to said leader.

Either someone is a bad guy, or he is not. Many believe obama is just an idiot with no evil intent. Many believe he is not so innocent. But we always root for the demise of the bad guys with evil intent, not just in the movies, but in life. We rarely root for the death of the mere idiot. The blog management, therefore, has to decide whether the narrative of obama as the insidious Manchurian candidate can be allowed as they allow the narrative of obama as the Chancey Gardner idiot. If they allow the former, it is therefore only logical, and indeed ethical, that such sentiments be expressed, regardless of what hay the left may make with such comments.

If it’s on the level, we owe the Turks a big thank you.

Well, I never heard it before, but it sounds uncommon nonsense.

K, nothing on Drudge about this right now, so I, too, am skeptical of this report.

I want Pres-uhhhhh-dent O’Bumbler and Plugs removed from office, but by legal means.

On a certain level your analysis does indeed make sense, however it ignores the factors of nuance, degree, good form and prudence.

Have you read thru the replies to see how many here have repudiated the BS posts that have been made? Have you ever seen that happen on KozKidz or DummieUnderpants when, say, a Republican has had something terrible happen to them? I lurk at such places sometimes (full HAZMAT suit on) and I’ve never seen it.

You truly need to change your name to Getaclue. It fits you much better.

I’m willing to bet it wasn’t a knife. With three other accomplices, it’s got to be the standard exploding camera. The three others are there to record the “martyrdom”.

MikeA-
What I really like about this is that these boneheads calling you names are being intimidated into politically correct speech on this website by what some moron at the DailyKos thinks….
They don’t seem to understand (even yet)is that Kos will say whatever they want to to regardless of what we think…or more importantly, the truth…..
and it is my freedom of speech that is being assaulted.

Good for Ed. Maybe he’ll take you out too. You deserve to be nuked off this site.

I want the guy defeated in an election — I don’t want him blown up, stabbed, or shot down, or any other violent end. It’s not how we do things in America, and, secondly, Barack Obama represents the United States of America.

You are on the same side as AQ when you side with MikeA.

It’s not your freedom of speech. You can go paste whatever you want on your own blog, but this isn’t your own blog. The printing press here is owned by someone else.

unclesmrgol on April 6, 2009 at 9:14 PM

All things being equal, I’d rather have a President Biden than a President Obama.

Biden is relatively dumb and has mixed intentions. Obama is smart and has evil intentions. Obama is far more dangerous.

At least most people are smart enough to not take Biden seriously.

What would really scare me, however, is a President Pelosi.

Yes. I’m not a fan of the criminal element of national politics but I pray he and his family remain safe.

Zorro on April 6, 2009 at 10:23 PM

If it’s on the level, we owe the Turks a big thank you. We may oppose Barack Obama’s policies, but he’s still our President. I’m betting that this is something less than advertised, however.

This is true We have Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi waiting in the wings….however that doesn’t mean people have to abdicate their principles, and behave as though they agree with Barack Obama- if they don’t. How many Americans didn’t agree with George W Bush? It’s time to take back the Senate and the House in 2010. It’s called Divide Government and it works.

Dr Evil on April 6, 2009 at 10:24 PM

Nobody’s taking this seriously. If Obama gets nailed, I wonder if anyone will take it seriously.
