CNN poll: How about Michelle Obama for president in 2020?

posted at 9:30 pm on April 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

As inspired by one of their iReporters. I told you in December that a Senate run was inevitable. CNN takes it one step further:

The news website also launched a poll on its homepage, asking, “Should Michelle Obama run for president in 2020?”

At press time for this article, with 200,000 votes tallied in the unscientific poll, 83 percent of respondents answered no, with a ratio of over 165,000 against the idea to only 35,000 in favor…

Despite an overwhelming number of poll respondents voting against a Michelle Obama candidacy, online comments in reaction to O’Reilly’s video are fairly mixed.

“Michelle Obama is an exceptional woman with great charisma and overwhelming intelligence,” writes a poster identified as adbabler. “She would make an excellent candidate for the top office of the land. If she decides to run for President, I would love to support her.”

No doubt comments opposing a Hillary run would have been overwhelming circa 1993, too. Here’s how you’ll know if she’s serious about running for office herself: The One will shock the world by endorsing Roland Burris for Senate next year, implicitly signaling some sort of agreement by which Burris will retire come 2016 so that Michelle can run for the seat. Barring that, the Obamas will have no options except appointing Durbin to a cabinet post in his second term, freeing his seat for a special election.

Don’t act so shocked. Hillary blazed the trail in this area and the media loves Michelle even more than they loved her. Why wouldn’t she run?

Blowback

She might not run if her husband ends up finishing Jimmy Carters 2nd term. I think he has a good running start.

I have yet to be overwhelmed by her intelligence. Must have missed something.

She’ll have the feminist vote–they love women who run on their husbands’ accomplishments.

jgapinoy on April 6, 2009 at 9:37 PM

It would be the second time she could be proud of her country.

Mark1971 on April 6, 2009 at 9:37 PM

Why bother with an election? I just assumed he`d appoint her for 8 yrs. come back for his second 8 yr run and so on and so on.

She’s not going to run. She’s never shown any interest in being involved in public life, and she barely spoke at all during the campaign. She has no influence on policy, she’s just being a Mom.

Think about that: She’s a Princeton and Harvard Law grad, and she’s not doing anything.

Hillary Clinton in 1992 was being touted as “two for one” deal, and she was involved in the health care fiasco. There was never any doubt that Hillary Clinton was going to run.

None of this is true with Michelle Obama. I think she could run for something and probably win; I don’t think she wants it.

Proud Rino on April 6, 2009 at 9:45 PM

I’d rather have Michele Bachmann.

Sign of the Dollar on April 6, 2009 at 9:45 PM

I was thinking the other day…hmmm…I wonder what the First Lady thinks of her husband’s administration thus far. What approval rating would shegive him? After all, no spouse agrees with everything their significant other proposes. I also wonder what his daughter thinks, the one who said “First African American President, huh…better be good.” Not that anyone should ask, the kids should be left alone. Just sayin…

Spiritk9 on April 6, 2009 at 9:48 PM

She won’t run for office because she would have to campaign, and that means going out and speaking to people.

And as we learned during the campaign, she’s a bigger gaffe-machine than Obama & Biden combined.

If she IS interested in politics, she’ll go the route blazed by her hubby and have her opponents disqualified and have herself appointed instead of actually having to run.

She’s too much into black liberation theology to actually win a nationwide election.

Religious_Zealot on April 6, 2009 at 9:49 PM

radiofreevillage on April 6, 2009 at 9:43 PM

In practice, this country has tons of ruling families. Lots of candidates get their start in politics under some form of “my father did a good job, so I will to” – and people vote for them solely upon a name.

Or worse, solely upon a party affiliation.

lorien1973 on April 6, 2009 at 9:49 PM

Luckily we will never see this happen.
Take my word for it when I ask:

We all know she would lose, right?
Only liberal optimists would hope for this.
Remember how Hillary ended up losing.
Forget a political future for Mrs. Obama.

??????

Twenty or so of Michelle’s ‘best’ speeches from 18 months of campaigning

She gave almost as many public speeches through 2007-08 as her husband did, and probably 50 times as many as either Cindy McCain or Laura Bush.

And, of course, we all remember some of her most famous quotes….

Plus the wonderful interviews where we learned that she thinks her husband smells bad, and never picks up his dirty socks.

Tzetzes on April 6, 2009 at 9:43 PM

Because the 0ne runs in 2012, with Hillary. That’s the deal under which she began to ‘love’ him. That moves the butterfly to 2024, at the earliest. America might be stupid, but maybe not for so long.

Entelechy on April 6, 2009 at 9:59 PM

Hey, it almost worked for Hillary. Riding the coattails. Wonder where she would have been had it not been for Willie becoming the Prez. This is the problem, though, having the same old select few even being considered way before the fact.

scalleywag on April 6, 2009 at 10:00 PM

Actually, I think the damage obama causes to America will be so massive that he may ruin the chances of any other African American winning the presidency any time soon. This would be a real shame, because there are so many gifted African American leaders out there that could really be inspirational and effective as Commander in Chief.

ErinF on April 6, 2009 at 10:01 PM

I know that you ‘conservatives’ have a hard time looking to the future, unless that future is 1953, but what if the Obama Stimulus works?? The Party of No – already diminished and marginalized could become even more of a fringe group. You’d have the far right break off from the ones who just want low taxes making a bad situation even worse. I can see why you want failure for BHO, his success is your downfall.
