CNN poll: How about Michelle Obama for president in 2020?

posted at 9:30 pm on April 6, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

As inspired by one of their iReporters. I told you in December that a Senate run was inevitable. CNN takes it one step further:

The news website also launched a poll on its homepage, asking, “Should Michelle Obama run for president in 2020?”

At press time for this article, with 200,000 votes tallied in the unscientific poll, 83 percent of respondents answered no, with a ratio of over 165,000 against the idea to only 35,000 in favor…

Despite an overwhelming number of poll respondents voting against a Michelle Obama candidacy, online comments in reaction to O’Reilly’s video are fairly mixed.

“Michelle Obama is an exceptional woman with great charisma and overwhelming intelligence,” writes a poster identified as adbabler. “She would make an excellent candidate for the top office of the land. If she decides to run for President, I would love to support her.”

No doubt comments opposing a Hillary run would have been overwhelming circa 1993, too. Here’s how you’ll know if she’s serious about running for office herself: The One will shock the world by endorsing Roland Burris for Senate next year, implicitly signaling some sort of agreement by which Burris will retire come 2016 so that Michelle can run for the seat. Barring that, the Obamas will have no options except appointing Durbin to a cabinet post in his second term, freeing his seat for a special election.

Don’t act so shocked. Hillary blazed the trail in this area and the media loves Michelle even more than they loved her. Why wouldn’t she run?

Why shouldn’t Michelle run. She’s as qualified as her husband is.

I’m looking forward to 2012. Either one of two things will happen. Either the Dems lose the Whitehouse, or the world comes to an end. Either way, we’ll be done with obama.

I’d rather have this Michelle.

Sekhmet on April 6, 2009 at 10:51 PM

Oprah I thought was giving up her show in 2010. She isn’t going to sit home, and can use Messiah’s logo. Unfortunately for the country (and her most likely les-be-friend) I think that is much more plausible than Michelle.

Again: What views?

As for the dumbing down of America comment: Yes. We’ve elected Al Franken (most likely), Jesse Ventura, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and I can’t even tell you how many ex football players, singers, actors and people with zero qualifications but a famous name (e.g. Kennedy) to office, but Michelle Obama, the Princeton and Harvard Law grad – THAT would be the dumbing down of America. Whatever.

Proud Rino on April 6, 2009 at 10:45 PM

A lawyer is no more qualified than an actor to run an executive position. Unless she has a business degree she’s just as worthless as arnie or ventura.

Her husband has certainly proven that one doesn’t have to be qualfied for the job to become president, so it seems she has a lot going for her in that sense.

If we are going to use Hillary as an example, why limit our thinking to Illinois? Why not spread out to New York or Rhode Island or Massachusetts? A better indication of which state is in play would be where they start vacationing.

It is a terrible thing that you don’t even know what your views are. Talk about reading comprehension failure….

I never suggested that President Bush is stupid. Why would you infer that? Do you think so? I was suggesting that celeberty, name recognition, familiarity are what wins elections if you have the media adulation to go along with it and that is the only thing Mrs. Obama has going for her.

Finally, almost every political view you express is left of center. Just because you can’t remember any does not mean that I am going to play your stupid game of recall that comment. I think that most regulars on here know what you’ve said in the past and what you stand for.

Are you saying they are under some kind of discipline? Maybe they just don’t want to pay bar dues and are in a dormant status. If there is something to be found, by all means find it! But since he basically has been running for President for the last 3 years and they made a killing on book deals maybe they have just chosen not to pay their bar dues and practice law.

Don’t get me wrong I’d love it if there was some scandal!

Those dates are interesting however, because… Michelle passed the bar presumably in May 1989. But Barack didn’t pass until December 1991? Weren’t they in the same class? Maybe not that was just my impression. Barack wasn’t admitted to the bar until ‘91? So that story about not wanting to join a law firm right out of school and doing community organizing instead… maybe that wasn’t a choice. Maybe that is the only job he could find.

I don’t know I’m really just making things up. Maybe Michelle was almost 3 years ahead of him. Maybe there is another explanation. I didn’t read the books.

This fascination with Michelle Obama has the feel of the fascination with Martha Stewart in prison. That is, almost completely PR-firm generated.
There was such a frenzy around Martha’s release it was carried live on cable news. People ran out to buy little crochet ponchos. It seemed like everybody looooved Martha.

And what if the moon is made of green cheese? “What if’s” need some sort of basis in reality. The so-called “stimulus” can’t work (neither could Bush’s bailout, as we’ve seen) because it violates all sound economic principles. The problem with the Left is they live in the hypotheticals, and refuse to see the reality of their policies. This is demonstrated time and again in their efforts at Utopian engineering, and is the only way Keynesian economics still exist as anything other than the punchline to a very bad joke.

capitulus on April 6, 2009 at 10:11 PM

It won’t. It can’t. You don’t have to be “conservative” to realize this. Hell, I’m not conservative and I consider massive spending during a recession (which, originally, wasn’t that bad, but thanks to the media and the politicians it got hyped and now everyone is scared) is pretty much the most stupid thing you can do.

Here’s a comparison. Let’s say you have a deficit of 5,000 Dollar on your bank account. You know you will lose your job next week. What will you do?

Option A) Spend money like crazy, so that you end up with 20,000 Dollar deficit on your bank account?

Option B) Cut down spending in order to save money because you don’t know how fast you’ll find a new job?

Everyone with a working common sense will chose option B.
Every leftist will chose option A.

DeathToMediaHacks on April 6, 2009 at 11:30 PM

Both of their degrees are meaningless because they were unearned; using the racist affirmative action policies, they were handed out to them like a welfare check.

More qualified students who worked harder, sacrificed more, and had better entrance scores had THEIR dreams and THEIR parents dreams crushed (even though they worked hard and played by the rules) so these two system using, ungateful mooches could be propped up and make the grey ponytailed, self loathing, liberal professors feel all warm and tingly while they sip cognac and chit chat about this social engineering experiment at university cocktail parties.

Pathetic. Pinning an eagle globe and anchor on a pencil necked civilian pant wetter will not make him a Marine. Handing an underachiever a diploma will not make him or her smart. Sorry, some things in life need to be earned.

I’d love for leftists to point to one place where their policies work long-term. They continually cite Europe without recognizing that Europe will be broke and overrun by Muslims within two generations. That isn’t “working”, that’s slow-motion civilizational suicide. Socialism of the European type is like putting a seat cushion in the handbasket you’re riding to hell. Yeah, it’s a tad more comfortable, but you’re going to the same place the old Soviet Union went, which is the ash heap of history. Economics has come a long way since Keynes. Unfortunately, none of that way supports Keynesianism. Here’s my favorite short layman’s piece on why the stimulus won’t work.

Pardon me, Proud Rino, but have you read her dissertation from Princeton?

gridlock2 on April 7, 2009 at 6:36 AM

I’m not a Princeton grad, but one of my best friends is. Suffice it to say, he was pretty embarrassed when the excerpts came out. There is some evidence that affirmative action has the effect of gaining its beneficiaries admittance to schools one tier above their actual abilities. In Michelle’s case, I think it was two, since she was AA and a legacy due to her brother’s attending Princeton, and in Barack’s it was at least one also. In fact, here’s a real scholar on the quality of Obama’s intellect:

http://easyopinions.blogspot.com/2009/04/richard-epstein-discusses-barack-obama.html

“I like Obama but I reject the suggestion that he is an intellectual. He is an activist merely mimicking the mannerisms of an intellectual.”

The fundamental mistake of his entire world view is that he treats contracts as devices for exploitation and not as devices for mutual gain, and he assumes that redistribution can take place without any negative impact upon production.

If you live in that kind of a fairy land, which I think he does, every one of his major social and economic initiatives are going to misfire. And, if they succeed, God forbid, in getting through, they are going to intensify the downturn that we have already experienced. He is the wrong guy for the job based on his intellectual format. The question is whether you can force him back.

My favorite little detail to come out of the entire marathon Presidential campaign was that when she left her job, they didn’t hire a replacement. Anyone who’s ever held a position of importance in an organization (which will automatically exclude our resident trolls from this knowledge) knows that only means your role in the organization’s success was non-existent or symbolic. The 35,000 people who answered this CNN poll “Yes” should be tracked down and barred from every voting again without undergoing some serious education.

I have one of those tiny little SHARPIE pens that fits on a key ring, and in every mom and pop 7-Eleven with no real security camera, I draw big nasty “X”s on magazine covers that feature her hideous horse face.

Maybe I’ll send THAT to POST SECRET.

I am so sick of spouses (thus far, I think they have all been female) basically saying to the American public “Well, I was/am married to a President/Senator/Whatever, so I am qualified to ride his coattails into the position because I can do just as good a job as he did”.

Mostly it’s been on the left, but there have been a couple of cases on the right (Senator Elizabeth Dole).

Look, if you’re female and you want to be Senator, President, Governor or whatever, do what men have to do, build one yourself. You don’t get to ride somebody’s coattails just because you were married to them. That’s the ultimate in assumption and privilege. (It’s funny how many on the left applaud this style of politics and yet claim to stand for women’s rights. It is the debasement of the woman (and all women) to allow her to do this since along with it is the underlying statement that she could not have done it on her own.)

Also, there is the underlying double-standard that women can get away with this but that men cannot. I do not think that the media would allow a husband to get away with this, but they allow women to do it all of the time. Once again, belittling women’s abilities and equality (by setting a different standard for them than for men- a lower standard).

This is one of the reasons that I like Governor Palin. She made her own way with her own career and on her own merits. She did not ride her husbands coattails.
