Poll: What was the Obamateurism of the week?

posted at 10:40 am on April 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

I’ve been having my fun all week long, and now it’s your turn. On Sundays, rather than publish a new Obamateurism of the Day, we’ll take polls to discover which Obamateurism Hot Air readers liked best, or in this case, maybe found most embarrassing:

Enjoy! I’ll announce the winner on tomorrow’s Ed Morrissey Show with Kevin McCullough at 3 pm ET! Although, this week, I think one answer will probably be a prohibitive favorite …

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

What’s wrong with bowing to the King?

Ed, you really biased that bowing thing as evinced by the vote tally…lol…without buying into popular sentiment I chose: saying “England” rather than UK when addressing the UK. Mega-freakin’ boneheaded…

So Barry bowed. Obunghole simply reverted to the Islamic training he received in his youth. While we were playing little league and going to Sunday school young Barry Sotero was living in Singapore and was registered in his Catholic school as a Muslim . That means he received daily lessons in the Koran.

Isn’t that common for most US presidents ?

Totally agree. That had nothing to do with being an amateur, and it wasn’t a gaffe.

I voted for the fumble of the British reporter’s question. Obama hasn’t learned yet that there are a few people who still actually think (as opposed to so many who simply bask in his leg-tingling aura); he’s clearly unprepared when the encounters them.

He already did it with the Queen of Great Britain, who got barely a nod.

The bow to the king of Saudi Arabia, combined with his continuing denigration of America, calling her ‘arrogant’ among other things, is to me frankly mindboggling. He has, in his first trip abroad, painted America not as a leader but as a follower, and as one who owes a debt for her wrongdoing to what I might crudely describe as the non-white (and perhaps especially the Muslim?) world in particular.

In just a couple of days he seriously weakened America and I have no doubt that you’ll pay, perhaps in blood, for that before he leaves office.

It was embarrassing on several levels. Number one; Obama bowed to no one else. This clearly showed his preference and favoritism for this Muslim leader.

A comment left for another post online is very good, IMO:

“Regarding the post about Obama bowing down to the King of Saudi Arabia, with this act it becomes totally evident that in spite of what he has said, Obama really is a Muslim.

If I remember correctly, the King of Saudi Arabia is Protector of the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina, therefore all Muslims bow down to him.

To my mind, that would be the only reason that Obama would bow down to him in spite of him being simply just another foreign dignitary. “

The online Travel Etiquette website for Saudi Arabia said handshakes are common greetings between members of the same sex.

The website for the British queen advises men who are from the United Kingdom to provide a neck bow (from the head only) “whilst women do a small curtsy. Other people prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way.”

The traditional Miss Manners book of etiquette advises: “One does not bow or curtsy to a foreign monarch because the gesture symbolizes recognition of his/her power over his/her subjects.”

Yeah, I realize by that standard he’d already snubbed the queen, except the thing with the queen was before Abdullah. The most recent action becomes the precedent. It wouldn’t be half as bad if he’d met Abdullah first…then it could be explained away that he’d been coached in between.

What I think happened was that he revealed a disdain for boring, old Western culture and a bias favoring an “exotic” one.

All – the entire paltry sum – in noncombatant roles.

1 trillion for the economy.

How much of that is American anteing up?

Nuke deals.

You exaggerate. An agreement to start talking, and bilateral nuclear arms reductions are exactly what Russia wants because their nuclear arms are old and falling apart. In other words, this is in Russia’s interests, not necessarily America’s. Furthermore, Obama got nothing from Russia for this agreement. He could have – and some might argue should have – insisted on Russia getting on side on sanctions against Iran in exchange. But no, he just gave Putin exactly what Putin wanted, for a big zippo in return. Is that ’smart diplomacy’? Sounds pretty dumb to me.

And you left out the big one – he dealed away America’s right to regulate its own financial industry. And what a deal – looks like America gets a big zippo for that one, too. Bye bye sovereignty.

Explains why neo-Nazis attended en mass Obama’s Berlin world wide campaign pit stop featuring a band concert, a free weenie roast and all-you-can-drink free beer. Nazi or Socialist, AS IF they’d ever support a black politician in Germany FOR Germany, wake up. If Europe weren’t so racist against Africans and Muslims, those populations living in Europe would enjoy representation in legislative national bodies. As it is outside of Africa or the MidEast, those populations are only represented in the UN by politicians with crippling, huge chips on their shoulders and tunnel vision bent on revenge.

Oddly enough, only the US government fairly represents ALL population segments and protects all equally under rule of law (so far as THAT remains in existence). Anti-Americanism is founded on mental derangement. That includes the Obama’s lack of allegiance to our nation.

Thanks for the link. I had completely forgotten about that Clinton incident.

What amazes me is that in the early 90’s, the NY Times still had enough journalistic integrity to report the semi-bow, even if to dismiss it as not really a bow. As of today, not a single article has even acknowledged that President Obama bowed down on bended knee before Saudi Arabian King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.”

Loxodonta on April 5, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Bowing to the Saudi king was the most offensive, but the fumbling of the economics question was the most amateurish. It also serves well to undercut what has been undeservedly pumped up by the MSM as one of Obama’s “strengths:” his speaking ability. The fact of the matter is that he’s a lousy speaker without TOTUS and even the libs are beginning to take notice.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: It’s an interesting question. I had already formed relationships with many of them. … There’s a lot of — I don’t know what the term is in Austrian — wheeling and dealing — and, you know, people are pursuing their interests, and everybody has their own particular issues and their own particular politics.

Joke all you want but it’s the bowing for sure. The bowing is the only one which will directly lead towards pain.

Even if we put aside what an insult it is to Americans to see the President bow to King, what about the rest of the world the left crows about?

Obama is adored in Africa. What will the site of the First “Black” President, nominally a Christian, BOWING to an Arab Muslim king do for them? What hope does a child in Darfur take from that? Will the Arabs slaughtering by the millions in Africa be emboldened by such a sight? Bet on it.
Whatever hope Africans got from Obama just went out the window.

And where is the outrage of the Black Press and Professors in the US? What does Cornell West think of the site of the Black President bowing to a Caucasian?

The balls of donkey shit that roll out of your mouth make it impossible to understand a word you say. Although they do sound suspiciously like the same balls of shit the DTMH spews. You must be following behind him and gobbling up his left overs and regurgitating them.

Ipod for the Queen gets my vote

vcferlita on April 5, 2009 at 7:02 PM

Bowing was idiotic, not a muff. So the vote has to go to the answer that never happened. I fell asleep waiting for the answer to that one.

jdsmith0021 on April 5, 2009 at 7:24 PM

The subservient bow got my vote, but what also grinds my teeth is his assessment of his own country as “arrogant, divisive, and derisive.” Those descriptor belong more as definers of Barack Obama. What, pray tell, was he intending to accomplish with those words?

C’mon you guys! Getalife has to be just goofing on the Left. You know, illustrating absurdity by being absurd, like Rush does? Right? Right? Anyone? Bueller?

Bush 43 may have ended up being a squish – but he was the most anti-Saudi president we’ve had in my lifetime.

He put pressure on them to allow elections and went to war against the Saudi’s expressed objections.

Arguably, this latter point is what caused the revolt of the state department against him.

So Obama is back to the norm I guess. He’s got more important countries to pick fights with. Like Britain.

I bet he means Byzantine…but he’s made his historical ignorance a point of pride…so I guess all in all it makes sense.

Well, as far as amateurisms, the response to the question about the Evils of Amerikkka was a complete, off-the-TOTUS sputterfest. If anything proves his amateurism, it’s that.

Too bad rounding up 300 military trainers from THE WHOLE OF EUROPE didn’t make the list.

Paul Mirengoff offers several theories why Obama repeatedly demonstrates disrespect for our nation in his forays abroad:

We could also look to the negative influences during Obama’s formative years, his unresolved “daddy” issues, and hhis malignant narcissism.

onlineanalyst, you forgot his unanswered racism and his sneering attitude to the “C” religion.

The king take our finely inked cotton paper for his btu’s of portable energy. Get used to bowing. And learn a little yessir and yesma’am in Chinese while you’re at it.

pc on April 6, 2009 at 12:41 AM

I wouldn’t call bowing to the Saudi King amatuerish.
Despicable, treasonous, yes, amatuerish, no.
To declare it amatuerish is to give the the impratuer of a mistake. This was no mistake.

Completely blowing a tough but easily anticipated question at a presser, now that’s amatuer hour stuff.
